This is a funny conversation!  If my 20 year old son walks in here before leaving for class this morning and sees me discussing "Boobs or No Boobs" with my morning coffee....I'm afraid he will consider it the finally straw in determining his mother has totally gone bat shit crazy.  ;)

Anywhoozle....I understand the way you feel aabout this, I really do.  I probably don't have as strong a reaction to it, but....I can understand why you do.

Well, the way I look at it is that whether or not "it's only a game" players have very particular aesthetic preferences.

some want a "manly character" and others want something that looks "cool" and others want something they can identify with.

Breasts are very important to women. Even outside of game. They are sexualized by men and thus women have to contend with that type of attention, positive or negative, they are functional and whether to breast feed or not is a huge decision for some women. They can have their issues, such as sagging as one gets older or something more sinisiter, a woman having to deal with breast cancer.

Women are often teased if they develop too young but are then teased if they haven't developed by a certain age.

In the end, humanity is wired to be sexual and to have aesthetic concerns to greater or lesser extent. So I can easily understand why the inclusion of a breast slider might be as important as changing a face or hair style.

The sort of fantasy art i've grown up with is like:

    http://www.arthistoryarchive.com/arthistory/fantasy/images/FrankFrazetta-The-Silver-Warrior-1972.jpg

    or

    http://www.tednasmith.com/lotr1/TN-Leaving_the_Shire.html#lts

so that's the sort of art style i prefer to see in games. I suppose i'd describe it as gritty-cartoony.

I don't mind anime. I don't mind at all if there are female characters in a game who look like emo girls. I don't mind if there are men who want a male avatar in a game that looks like an emo girl if they want. However i can't get into a game long term if there isn't an option for craggier male faces for me to play as.

If it isn't brownish-gray with big tuff manly men drawn like refrigerators with cantaloupes nailed on for heads, they won't play it.

What I find odd about this attitude is that it only goes one way. I've never heard anyone say that they would refuse to play a game because the only colors it features are dogshit brown and muzzle flash. I've never heard anyone say “I'm not going to play a game where the protagonists breasts are that small!!!” We all want to talk about how games have broken out of the “teenage boys in their basement” demographic, but the forums seem to be jam packed with people who are too macho insecure to be anything other than.

So just how much of this hatred toward charm and color in artwork is really just insecurity about how others will perceive your sexuality? You know what I'm talking about? How many of these comments are really about the need to be seen as straight and manly? Seriously.

Most of the games I grew up with had horrible graphics. I still played them, because they were good games. I can put up with sub-par artwork or art styles that I don't like if the game underneath is solid. So what gives with the cartoon haters? Why rob yourself if you aren't worried about how others look at you?

    LOL

When I play a MMO nobody knows who I am in real life so I could not care less what kind of sexuality I project to others by playing a certain game.

I actually find your theory quite funny.

I usually go for the brown/grey palette games which to me gives a little bit of realism to RPGs (debateble of course)

But I don't mind to play games with vivid colors or cartoonish style, since I am playing WoW at the moment.

Generally though, I do not like Asian art style in particular the fluffy/cute races or the extremely good looking ones (effemminate), and this has to do nothing with my insecurity, but more to the fact that I imagine my fantasy worlds nasty and unforgiving.

I cannot imagine a little fluffy thing defeating the evil who want to take over the world.

Can you imagine Justin Bieber leading an Army against the Talibans in real life? Me neither, so I cannot imagine a a little ball of fur killing a 6 foot demon..........

I know that a game is fantasy and everything can happen, but my mind cannot accept that kind of event ever happening.

(Oh and I like female toons with big boobs and few cloths on, ala Xena)

I didnt' read all 8 pages,, but wanted to pipe in my opinion and graphics..  I wish games offered more variety on body size and shape instead of the "perfect" frame.. I did like how CoX and SWG allows you to customize to a degree if you want ot be lean and mean, or short and puggy..  Variety for the win..  Sometimes sliders makes things unproportioned, but why not atleast given people an option of lets say 10 body frames, instead of 1 default model..

I like the KOTOR artsyle, and the new SWTOR. I also liked the EQ2 artstyle.

Not a big fan of anime, manga. I don't mind to much when they tone it down, and sort of mix a manga influence with Western art, but the extreme big eyes, spikey hair thing isn't appealing to me.

Also, this I do not want to see anywhere in my MMORPG please:

I pretty much dismiss something, if the toons look like something geared for a 8 year old.  Thats just me though.

I didn't like WoW (only played beta), but the graphic style is ok to me, its not my favorite, but I can do that, but anytime I see the anime in overdrive toons, I dismiss something and move on.

Can I miss something because of it?  Sure, but I will live with it...

I have enough realism in my daily life, so I like my games not to be realistic. Unless they have awesome plotgameplay, then art style doesn't matter. They can look even like Halo, or some other generic shooter, although in this case I'll have doubts before playing.

Honestly I am just not a fan of Japanese animation. I like colors(one of my all time favorite games is Earthworm Jim 2 it is very colorful). It really has nothing to do with my sexuality, but I do find that Anime tends to be more sexually charged than western animation.

Also I find it a bit presumptuous to say that because we don't like Anime we somehow have "...this hatred toward charm and color...". Honestly I am not even sure what your point is. Please make it clearer so I can come up with a better sarcastic reply.

"but I do find that Anime tends to be more sexually charged than western animation."

I'd say western fantasy art is more sexual but western game companies seem more restrained from going down that route for whatever reason. Only AoC has attempted to go down that path and even they couldn't bring themselves to make the player models as *meaty* and physical as they are western fantasy art.

Fantasy Art can be fairly sexual, but even then it pales in comparison to the overt sexuality presented in many popular Anime cartoons. In fact one of the more popular Anime genres is known as Fan-Service(Fanservice explicitly refers to material that is designed to amuse or excite the audience with sexually-derived content; many times it involves prepubescent girls.). So, I would heavily debate whether Western Fantasy art is more sexual than Anime in general.

I guess that I can see why you may think that someone who is homophobic would hate Anime . .. I guess?? It is simply not true though and I think that the reason is more likely that people just do not like the style of art as already mentioned.

I enjoy anime such as Akira, Cowboy Bebop, etc. etc. but I must admit that if they were made without the anime style faces/shapes than I would have probably enjoyed them more unless I was watching it because it is cute. When did they decide that all of their cartoons had to have huge eyes and no nose? One of my all time favorite anime movies was 'the Lord of the Rings' because the art looked very real compared to most cartoons (not the same artists as the Hobbit that was sort of a musical but the other guys).

I have always preferred games to look more realistic so that I can get immersed and pretend that it is real or that I am observing a real story of something that really happened but I have a hard time doing that if the characters have huge eyes and heads too big for their bodies or carrying some sword or gun that would normally be way to heavy to life in real life. These things only bother me because they remind me of the fact that it is just a make believe story and none of it is real.

When growing up I preferred the Sega Genesis over NES or even SNES by far simply because of the art. In nintendo games, most characters are stupid looking colorful baby things while Sega had a much more realistic feel and they had more games that seemed to be obviously for adults or mature-thinkers. Genesis had blood while nintendo kept everything to lasers and kid-friendly stuff. Genesis games would sometimes have things like a code to unlock a picture of a naked lady or some adult humor . ... things that I do not recall nintendo ever doing or allowing at all.

I would never even consider playing WoW because it is too cartoony for my taste. When it came out I assumed that it was just a dumbed-down version of EQ for kids. I was very surprised that it became so popular. If a game is going to attract me to play it for a long period of time it is not going to have any anime-style art so that I can get immersed. It was very hard for me to get into Guildwars because it was almost too cartoony but I felt a little better just making all of my characters girls . ... lol I hate the men in Guildwars cuz they all look like little boys.

Also I am playing MMOs to play with other people (other adults). Cartoony games attract kids and that is a fact, I don't care what the game is or how the gameplay is. The games that I tend to play are games where I rarely come across someone young enough to pass as a teenager. Most adults are turned off by cartoony art . .. not because we are homophobic or something silly like that, but because it just doesn't feel right. It is like a barbie doll . .. to kids it may look fine but to an adult she looks like a wierd alien chick with long funny legs and no waist. When I play games it makes me uncomfortable to come across a 12 yr old . .. makes me feel like I am too old to be gaming and that I am doing something wrong by playing with a kid who should be doing homework or something instead.

I also do not generally like anything that is too bright or colorful. I want MMOs to use the same colors that I would generally see in nature and in real life. Flourescent green grass is ugly to me just like those flourescent green pants were in the 80s. I work for a women's clothing company and items that have unnatural colors generally do not sell as well as items with natural colors so it has nothing to do with feminine . ..

If you are trying to make a game look realistic than nobody has to agree with any type of art.

Well, I think those are sort of fine. I like that there are "cute" races because they are different but I would, for the most part, hate to play one. Still, there is a certain humor in a juxtaposition of something like that and a Warrior. so that's sort of amusing to me.

Cute is fine but those things do not look real at all. They look like something that you would see only in a childrens cartoon. They just do not look natural. You can make many things have bigger eyes to make them look cuter but something about it just does not look right. Imagine seeing someone in real life with anime-style proportions . ... lol They would look hideous! Scary! Good idea for a horror movie though lol

Designing a character and the whole feel that I would get from the game would be different. If the game is colorful than I will usually go with a female and try and make her look hot or the ugliest boy possible and if a game is cartoony than I will try and make myself look as funny as possible like some ugly stupid cartoon so that I could at least get a laugh and feel like I created a cool character. If the game looks like it is trying to look realistic than I will try and make it look like me or someone I wouldn't mind looking like and get into the storyline more with a different approach toward the game (like actually reading quests . ..).

I usually make at least one funny looking character with every game just to see how ugly I can make it lol that is funnier in more realistic looking games too.

Oh and the more colorful and cartoony a game is = harder for me to find an adult-only clan (if one even exists).

Gaah, cute.. Anime isn't about cute, some anime (mostly for kids or girls) is but others are rather nasty. To illustrate my point, here is a picture of Alucard (yes, he is really Dracula):

Thats why I will never play that game. Maybe if I had more time . ..

I all of a sudden feel that this thread was made for people like me? lol

I promise I am not a homophobe and not worried about being manly . .. but I don't want to look at those a couple times a day while I game . .. I'll get plenty of time for that stuff when I have kids someday. Anime is as fun to watch as a regular movie if it is done right. I love a lot of anime shows that have a real story and more meaning besides just being cute. Cute characters are always good to have but I think the picture of the baby is cuter than those final fantasy creatures any day but does that mean I want to play with babies? I usually log in to kill people and take their stuff if the game will allow it so babies pictures do not help.

That's true, there are some very cool anime characters that are not cute. Vampire hunter D?
