I really don't know where you got this idea... it's like saying everyone that likes fruit is probably gay. Two things that have nothing to do with eachother.
Personally, I don't like the cute anime style, but I can stand the more realistic looking anime(ffxiv). My favorite style is something along the lines of Age of Conan.
For the record I'm heterosexual. I also have a problem with flamboyantly gay men. I've met straight acting gay men and feel completely comfortable around them. Limp-wrist, lisp talking, purse and paisley gay men however.... They effect me in a way that's similar to rusty nails dragging across a chalk board. Thus I'm going to avoid the term “homophobia” in this post. I'm not afraid of squealing femqueens. I'm deeply, deeply irritated by them. There is a difference.
….Where was I? Oh, right!! Art style!
So there seems to be a large number of people that are so allergic to anime/manga style art that they won't even try a game that has that same art style. Some of these people won't even play a game that is too “cartoony” in its art style. If it isn't brownish-gray with big tuff manly men drawn like refrigerators with cantaloupes nailed on for heads, they won't play it.
What I find odd about this attitude is that it only goes one way. I've never heard anyone say that they would refuse to play a game because the only colors it features are dogshit brown and muzzle flash. I've never heard anyone say “I'm not going to play a game where the protagonists breasts are that small!!!” We all want to talk about how games have broken out of the “teenage boys in their basement” demographic, but the forums seem to be jam packed with people who are too macho insecure to be anything other than.
So just how much of this hatred toward charm and color in artwork is really just insecurity about how others will perceive your sexuality? You know what I'm talking about? How many of these comments are really about the need to be seen as straight and manly? Seriously.
Most of the games I grew up with had horrible graphics. I still played them, because they were good games. I can put up with sub-par artwork or art styles that I don't like if the game underneath is solid. So what gives with the cartoon haters? Why rob yourself if you aren't worried about how others look at you?
I don't think the OP is correct in assuming its a sexuality issue for the reason of taste. Its more a sociological issue of western games featuring manlier male characters and hyper sexualized females, where realism is left aside for these types of designs to sell on the idea of sex or being macho.
Taste plays a part, but isn't really the issue as taste is modified not by your personal likes and dislikes but by influences of a society as a whole, its why you see more games that are western produced in that sort of style, and where men aren't made to be super macho or women to have huge breasts and revealing clothing are games that are rarely seen. So its more of what we experience and what we are use to also helps to frame the argument.
As far as it being a sexual thing no, its more of a socilogical taboo as men are defined as macho for most and anything less isn't manly.
Media in any form is also a part of the society's culture and helps to define standards as well as taboos, hence the character archtypes we have as well as the way models are done.
As an aside, games haven't broken out of the teenage boy demographic at least not from a developers standpoint, as many games are still made to appeal more towards men then women and such.
I have quite a few friends who play wow, and well only wow. They refuse to try anything else because it doesn't have the cartoon wow graphic. For example AoC has too good graphics according to them. When the graphics gets more realistic its a turn off, I find the whole graphic thing weird.

There is a long standing theory that homophobia can be caused by secret sexual arousal towards the same sex that is then rationalised in the mind by another extreme emotion hate...

Ok lets make an anology.
The Prius is a car. I'm not gonna get a Prius even though its gas mileage is awesome, because I want to drive my Wrangler even though its gas mileage is shit.
They are different cars. Different people like different things. Your post is legit useless. I play Age of Conan, one reason I do is that I love the grittiness of the game, it's very immersive. I don't play World of Warcraft because I am not as immersed into the environment, partly because of the color of the game (mainly because Mr. T is in the game ((what happened Blizzard))).
Am I saying that I want people to think that I want a more manly looking game? Or car? No. I just prefer one over the other. (Because I am a man and World of Warcraft and Prius cars are for little kids and stupid tree huggers (irony).

But you wouldn't drive a Prius? I assume that you at least spent some time in WoW. What I'm talking about are the people that won't even touch a game because of the art style. I'm talking about people who completely dismiss a game based on the artwork and only on the artwork.
I also liked the comment about cartoon artstyle hiding lower polygon counts. I believe that the person actually used "bad graphics" to describe lower poly counts. And that leads to another question: If the game is good, why do you need cutting edge graphics technology? Seriously, if it plays exactly the same then graphics are just icing on the cake.
Which do you care about more? The eye candy? Or the Gameplay?
So just how much of this hatred toward charm and color in artwork is really just insecurity about how others will perceive your sexuality? You know what I'm talking about? How many of these comments are really about the need to be seen as straight and manly? Seriously.
Just because you don't relate to a preference, doesn't mean you need to start making odd accusations. I just prefer realism. Cartoonish graphics just don't appeal to me as much, and make me think about how much cooler a game would be, if it were more realistic. That is, more to my own preferences. But I'm not going to question someone's sexuality for having a different opinion about such things.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
This is a prime example of " I'm going to cry eyes". This irritates me. No I do not consider that feminine, I consider that emo art. I dislike the eyes, the face shape, and the ears, but mostly the eyes and head shape. LOL to me it does not look femine, it just looks stupid.
Anime is a pretty broad term. Some look more realistic than others. And some anime might be Emo but a lot of it isn't. Here is a lady from "Black lagoon"
I still feel that is lacking detail. Yes, it is more tolerable than most, but the head still seems weird. A different head and I might be able to stand it. LOL It is the facial details that annoy me.
Where is her flippin nose? People HAVE noses! LOL
I think I'll just insert myself into the conversation at this point.
Personally I love this style but part of that is because it is taking a few lines and creating an image out of it. One of the things one learns in drawing is how to create images with the fewest amount of lines. With some asian art styles there is a beauty in simplicity. Asian of course is a pretty big term but in some asian cultures simple lines are better.
They are going for something different even though they are both woodblock prints.
in any case, in the end we are talking about taste. To bring it back to the op's statement, I don't think it has to do with having issues with sexuality but having issues with that particular art style.
For instance, "realism" is just that. I don't think people have issues with it becuase it's trying to be "real". We know "real", we live wit "real" and in a certain respect, creating something fantastical that looks like it could be "real" can be very cool.
But with other games that have more color, different art design, that essentially create characters and a world that plug into an art style; that art style is what is being evaluated.
Chronicles of Spellborn and Ryzom are different from each other and different from WoW. Same with SWToR.
I don't think it has anything to do with "colors" and introducing lines that might be construed as feminine but how that art style is perceived and accepted by the viewer. Well, I can't wholely say that as I do think there are people who won't play asian games because they deem the characters as being too feminine but if one was to make butch characters with color and over exaggerated lines they might also have issues with the style on top of perceived feminine characteristics.
Look at Torchlight. Very cartoony and over the top.
The fighter is a big burly cartoony guy. I would think that people who have problem with WoW would also have problems with torchlight. Though, the color pallette is different so that might lend to more acceptance. If wow had the same color pallette it might be more acceptable.
But stylized does speak to other parts of our mind and it's how we accept how these images inform our minds that determine whether we like it or not.
Sexuality? That's a whole other ball of wax. heck, if I made a game that was completely realistic but the men wore bondage gear and "assless" chaps and the women dressed like realistic hookers or dominatrixes I think there would be people who would start having problems with the art design. Or at least the themes.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Thus my ability to play every race in L2 except Dark Elf.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre

This is the most eloquent way of saying this that I have ever seen on these forums. Holy Crap is it totally true.
I don't mind any art style in a game as long as it looks cool and plays smooth. What I do mind is all the dudes that make avatars as chics. It's an old debate but to me you play an MMO so that you can immerse yourself as that character into that world. Seems a little freaky to create a toon of the opposite sex. Ewwww. Lots of dudes do it though, I usually think of them as the above quote though if I cross paths with one xD

Okay now....I would DEF play this game. I really don't think I'm alone with that opinion.

LMAO! I was thinking the same thing.. But I would also like to add that all male characters had to wear a loin cloth and crawl around on all fours on command.
As long as the female toons have boob sliders makng them bigger, I do not care about the art stayle.
I'm not sure I understand the seeming male fascination in this thread with "boob sliders." I mean...I'm a lesbian and still...boob sliders for fake boobs on cartoons do nothin' for me. O.o Must just be a downright "dude thing."

It is not just a male thing. I am a woman, and I think I was the one promoting boob sliders on this thread due to looking at that very odd female avatar above. It looks odd to me to play a female toon that is breastless. I have breasts, I would expect my female avatar to have breasts. Lack of breasts would be masculine. I think the rift picture posted in this thread looks masculine. I am a woman and proud to be a woman and enjoy my breasts very much, the removal of them appears as if they are trying to strip away our feminine details and form us in the shape of a man. I feel that breasts are part of being a woman, unlike the idea that many have that feminine = weak. Instead, I see that women should be proud to be women. A woman can be strong, sexy, fierce, curvaceous, intelligent, and be a survivor and THAT is all part of being feminine. Women for too long have thought that we should hide our bodies, but I disagree. I think we should be proud of our bodies, that we can wear a dress or a bikini and it does not degrade us in any way, it is the idea that we need " hide ourselves" from others that is degrading. I mean we are the lucky ones, women are blessed with the superior form.. That is why there are so many males these days that feel they have to be a woman in game because they think the male form is ugly.
I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to look like a guy.. I will keep my boobs thank you.
I also find it degrading that people assume if you have large breasts that means they have to be fake. SOME OF US WERE BORN THAT WAY! I hear it all the time, because I have a small frame and large breasts that they must be fake.. No I have had people harassing me about these things my whole life.. I even had to tape them down in school, and I am tired of being told how I am supposed to look. This was the way I was made, I am not changing myself because others are offended by it.

You sound like a typical insecure woman. Just take a seat, relax and enjoy your game. Most things in a game (if not all?) are obviously a part of imagination and creation, that's why people play games, to escape from the real world. Not liking the art is one thing but don't catter to such things as saying "I have boobs I want my avatar to have boobs!". Not all races in the games look like human, if you want your character to look like a proper human being thank god we got games like The Sims and Second Life. This is what people call the "fantasy" genre which most probably has little to do with the real world. I think you take games a bit too seriously.

LOL! you can choose to play non human races, but for those of us who think it strange to have furries talking, we also have the option to obstain. It has nothing to do with insecurity, and your idea that women are " insecure" to begin with, or that being a sterotype is nonsense. I am far from" insecure" I could really give a rats ass about what anyone thinks about me, it is what I think about me. I oppose those that wish to hide the female form in shame. We have nothing to be ashamed of, if anything those trying to cover up the female body should be ashamed of trying to make women feel bad for being natural.
You should have read my rants on furries.. LOL I oppose those as well, and find it quite creepy. I do not even like elves as a playable class.. In fact I hate class based games all together. But that is just me. You are entitled to your tastes. as I am entitled to mine. I do not play crap like sims or secondlife ( which secondlife has the most offensive furries), and there are MANY GAMES that do not have weird mutant playabale races. Guild wars1 for example. I actually have let my opinion be known how I was disappointed they were adding all those freaky races to Guild wars2, for me that takes away from emersion, because that is so twisted that I could not possible emerse myself in a world where my stuffed animals are talking to me.

Haha seemed interesting to me too
I am a middle age heterosexual male happily married with children.
There are many Variations of Anime that I like and some not so much but what style of art used is less important to me than the quality of art used.
and as stated somewhere else in this long thread, "hand drawn" art styles are a great way to increase performance by using low polly models with high quality textures

Wow. Seriously?
I wasn't saying I didn't like having boobs. 38DD definitely qualifies as having boobs....and mine have been that size for a long time. I'm 47 years old, so...I'm rather accustomed to them.
HOWEVER....I don't consider boob sliders of PRIMARY design importance. Apparently...you do, which is fine. When they are available in a game, I do USE them to make myself have natural looking breasts (non-watermelon sized, in MY opinion). I don't like my avatar to appear masculine either. But neither do I consider boob size to be a MAJOR concern when I'm playing a game.
I have seen men who play female characters make their boobs look absolutely MASSIVE. They look like weebles that are about to fall over on their face. That look doesn't appeal to me on my characters, and since it's generally men (or teenage boys) I have known in games that DO that....that's the only experience I have to draw from.
Sorry for upsetting you so. Guess I kind of hit a nerve. I apologize.

I actually have let my opinion be known how I was disappointed they were adding all those freaky races to Guild wars2, for me that takes away from emersion, because that is so twisted that I could not possible emerse myself in a world where my stuffed animals are talking to me.
Again, don't you think you are taking this a bit too seriously? A game is a game nothing more, you are just over-exaggerating about your feminine issues. Just because someone is making a female of another race (no, not human, an entirely different race) look........not like human doesn't mean he thinks bad of female body. If you ever saw a female alien would you tell her to grow breasts because she doesn't look female enough? As you said, you have nothing to be ashamed of as a female and hear me this has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with a random game found on the internet. I mean...c'mon it's just pixels you know?

How did you come to the conclusion that all females must have boobs? Only 10-20% of most MMORPGs consist of humans the rest 80% is other races which most probably have nothing to do with humans and obviously nothing to do with human looks.

Anime / Cel-shaded or nothing, IMO.
As an aside, games haven't broken out of the teenage boy demographic at least not from a developers standpoint, as many games are still made to appeal more towards men then women and such.
tldr: reading is fun.
Just because you don't relate to a preference, doesn't mean you need to start making odd accusations. I just prefer realism. Cartoonish graphics just don't appeal to me as much, and make me think about how much cooler a game would be, if it were more realistic. That is, more to my own preferences. But I'm not going to question someone's sexuality for having a different opinion about such things.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I think I'll just insert myself into the conversation at this point.
Personally I love this style but part of that is because it is taking a few lines and creating an image out of it. One of the things one learns in drawing is how to create images with the fewest amount of lines. With some asian art styles there is a beauty in simplicity. Asian of course is a pretty big term but in some asian cultures simple lines are better.
simply put here is a wood block print:
http://www.apocalipsis.org/artwork/durer-07.jpg
and here is a woodblock print:
http://communitas.princeton.edu/blogs/writingart1/images/utamarocourtesan.jpg
