Warcraft (patch 3.2 mainly) was also enjoyable because of the various landscape, dungeons, and phasing Tech. Ulduar is one of the best raids I've ever been in, introducing hard mode, lore, and different kinds of bosses (Fighting Mimiron is like sitting in a chair in the middle of a warfield with a big red button next to your right hand. If you stay still you'll be fine but twitch and your head asplode. Press the button and then fire will slowly creep around you as you start having delusions.)
As for future MMOs, I'm slowly waiting for Blade & Soul to come out, and for Vindictus (Mabinogi Heroes) to release the mage/Eva class.
UO pretty much started it all, there were others prior, but it pretty much got it started main stream. It had amazing PVP, great skill system, and great sandbox gameplay.
AC1 had a very interesting take on leveling, awesome customization, and combat that was exciting and fun. I still miss the days of being surrounded by tuskers and olthoi.
Finally DAOC. Some of the best PvP to be had. One of the few games out there were a small coordinated group could masacre idiots who didnt know how to play the game very well.
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
Daoc SWG (the original idea of it which was lost soon after release) Final Fantasy XIV (very soon and probably an alltime number one)
"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"
LotRO or EQ2 These tie for me hard to say which i liked more, but think maybe LotRO just a bit.
Even though UO is 2nd spot, i never have liked PVP in games much, which is why my first pick is what it is:) But it was one of the first and one of the first that drew me in.
All personal choices of course, nothing to do with the most played or all that stuff:)
Funny thing is, I don't enjoy PvP all that much, even so. I would say these are some of the best MMOs of there time, I was tempted to add FFXI to the list. King of its time, but shadowbane I feel out did it, late game was almost pure siege battles. If you found allies they tended to be some of the best people i've known in MMOs.
Instead of picking my 3 favs I am going to go with the Top 3 IMO (including games I quit or didn't like). I am giving an emphasis on age, staying power and avoidance of having to go F2P over the years. In no particular order:
WoW - long since quit but can't deny it's success
CoH - started a few months before WoW and still going strong (little bias here it's my current fav)
EVE - I didn't like this game but I will again honor its obvious success
All 3 have an all time score higher than 8.0 here on the site.
nothing on the market has really touched the greatness of those games, though darkfall is trying.
Those games had so much massive influence and innovation (vanguard less so) its really sad seeing some other MMOs in comparison. You have DAoC which expanded on EQ, perfected some of its mechanics, and then invented a massive amount of its own gameplay features. Compare that to WoW which just... well it dumbed down things as far as they could go and invented nothing.
Anarchy Online - great storyline and setting, great character progression system, all kinds of other awesomeness. Plus, it was my first and that's always special.
SWG - not because it was flawless, but because it gave a glimpse - however brief - at what is possible in this genre. something that will one day be returned to and done properly.
EQ2 - because it showed me that you don't need to give up your life in order to do challenging group or raid content. You just need skill, reliable people and 1-2 hours.
honorable mention - EVE. I very much admire EVE for all it's accomplished and the world it has created. but i'm just not a PvP fan and was never able to get into the game, so it would be hypocritical for me to rank it in the top 3.

There really is no top MMO, just most popular/most players on an MMO that leads to people saying its the top.
So if someone goes by that logic, nearly everyone would say Warcraft, EVE, even Runescape after its Guiness record.
Though, if I were to just pick out some of my rather favorate MMOS:
S4 League (TPS) is fun for me, especially when I'm playing chaser mode. The music combined with the action is a perfect 10 in my opinion.
Original Chaser Theme
Music that plays when you are the chaser.
Warcraft (patch 3.2 mainly) was also enjoyable because of the various landscape, dungeons, and phasing Tech. * Every SWG vote has been for pre-nge/cu.
Edit: Updated to include everything less than or equal to post 52.
Best MMORPG ever has got to be DAoC followed by UO, and SWG pre-cu.
When DAOC came out I got it and played for like 2 weeks.. then went back to UO.. kinda wish I checked it out more now.

Anarchy Online - great storyline and setting, great character progression system, all kinds of other awesomeness. Plus, it was my first and that's always special.

Same but I place UO first DAoC 2nd and SWG pre-cu 3rd.
Dark Age of Camelot
World of Warcraft
and.... thats it. I've tried many other MMO's, but nothing kept my attention like those two.
