Also, I think it's quite telling that so many people are putting SWG pre-CU as one of their top three. Back in the day I tried it and thought it was crap. It was a laggy, buggy mess (though it was cool when some Wookie taught me how to speak his growly Wookie language.)
No wonder SWTOR gets to much flack at this site, you all want SWG back and you're pissed off Bioware isn't accommodating you.
If you want to choose only 3 of your TOP favorite MMOs of all time what would they be?
Kalinis, first off I'm wondering if you are the Kalinis I think you are?? If so, whats up, if not, whats up. But anyway, the OP's statement is as seen above, take note of the possesive noun "your" as it is used in this question.
So I think this is a question of individual's favorite, MMO'S. Not neccessarily the best in terms of subs, and revenue. But I do agree many people hate on WoW, and honestly for no good reason. Personally the only reason I don't list WoW in my list, is I don't like what WoW did to the MMO Community. But as far as a good game? Yes it's a good game, plenty to do, plenty to get into.
So I thought I'd clear up the whole you have to put WOW as one of the top three. Just so ya don't get harshly harrassed.
Vack FF XIV - the single worse game to cross my hard drive, ever.
Im sorry i dont care who is making a list. If anyone who ever played mmo's is honest u cant have a list of top 3 without wow.
Not if u look at it logicly and from a purely commercial success standpoint. I know wow haters will say commercial success doesnt make wow a top 3 game i disagree
The reason wow is a commercial success and has 11.5 mil subs way more then the closest game out there is because wait for it wait for it. Its the best mmo going. No game hits 11.5 mil subs if its not a good game
U can put up daoc and all these others above them and throw wow into your well they may make the top 10 list crap. but the truth is wow is easily by far the best game on market.
I have played warhammer, ive played ddo and ive tried lotro. ive treid guild wars 1 and a few others none of them came close to being anywhere near as fun or entertaining as wow. they didnt even belong on the same page as wow.
I can understand for nostalgia sake people putting up daoc and if u love pvp eve. The problem is if u look at success wow is easily number 1 and maybe u dont personally like it but a list of top 3 mmos without wow on it just shows u as a wow hater.
To keep the top mmo in the world off a list of top 3 is just wrong. wow to me is easily number 1 and since i havent found another game i like wow is the only game on my list
when some of these games othes listed in top 3 hit 1 mil subs come talk to me. I understand some of them may be free 2 playtitles. but teven the best estimates of the top free 2 play titles users dont come close to wows sub base.
So basically you can't seperate your opinions from fact and therefore from other people's opinions. If we were making a list of the top 3 most profitable MMOs, then there wouldn't be any discussion and it would be a factual list. This list is the top 3 MMORPGs of all time, which means different things to different people.
Profit to me has absolutely nothing to do with what I consider the top mmos to be. All I care about is enjoyable gameplay, and WoW had zero of that. I made my list off of enjoyable gameplay and I would stand by the list no matter what. I don't care if some WoW megafanboi decides that WoW has to be on every list because he loves it so much, in fact I would just laugh at that person.
If you look at lists of the greatest movies of all time, they typically don't have the most profitable movies on them. Anytime something is highly profitable is because it plays to THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR. That means the largest amount of people can find some part of the game/movie worth playing/watching. Very few of those people would ever rate it as the best game/movie they've every watched/played. Games and movies which offer far more depth and far more creativity become challenging to play/follow for the unintelligent or those with short attention spans. This immediately cuts out a huge portion of the market and means that the product will not break sales records. But to the people who have the brain power and the attention span to enjoy a product like that, it stands far above all the mass produced, paint by numbers entertainment that gets thrown out there each year.
So no WoW doesn't have to be on any list, and in fact it shouldn't be on most of the lists.
EVE just frustrates the bejeezes out of me, not so much the game but CCP. CCP's game is so not polished and it should be. It also lacks one key thing - human avatars! OMG! We're not gettingthem until 2011?! Are you serious CCP?! Just keep dangling that proverbial carrot...this is my last month to subscribe until you put Incarna in complately and if it isn't any good and all we can do is walk around stations and look out windows - forget it! Tired of waiting on vaporware. 6 years this has been promised and we're still waiting!
I know what you mean. I actually own a copy of EVE (that I got on Steam for super cheap) that I refuse to activate and play until the galldarned Incrana comes out.
Ive tried em all but only 1 made me last for more then 3 month and that was SWG (Star Wars Galaxies). I stuck to that game for 5 years. I tried around 20 or so other games but non lasted longer then 3 month top.
Merdian 59, The first serious MMO (LoK was my preference from that generation though.) Everquest, the classic that predated wow and what wow was largely based on. World of Warcraft, The new standard, polished, supreme ui customization, and refined to perfection it's style of game play (linear accessible hybrid raid/pvp end game.
# 3 was tough. Age of Conan, EVE, SWG, and GW all fought it out in my head for 3.
#1 and #2 stand out a lot because there was deep role playing and story writing by the players, reminded me of tabletop gaming I did as a kid.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
OMG I cannot believe I am going to say this, but WoW has become my all time fave for overall game play...I have PvE, crafting and PvP all in one game...and think it offers me what I like in a game right now...(it could be so much better though!).
My list(may change in the future as it has in the past).
1) World of Warcraft - this game is by far the best game currently on the market.
2) Tie Vanguard - OMG why did they sell out to SOE and let this great game waste away as it has been since? So much potential - gone. SWG -preNGE - another SOE title that got mucked up by SOE. SWG was a great game it SOE hadn't of screwed it up!
3) DAoC
Honorable mention goes to Asheron's Call(Darktide server). Back in the day Asheron's Call was the cat's meow in my eyes. I really wish Mythuc would release a true Asheron's Call successor that takes all that is good from the first game and the second(Tumeroks!) and make a Asheron's Call 2.
Shout out to Planetside for some of my funnest and most intense PvP memories.
EVE just frustrates the bejeezes out of me, not so much the game but CCP. CCP's game is so not polished and it should be. It also lacks one key thing - human avatars! OMG! Man and I thought you'd be really happy that they have finally commited to an actual specific launch date rather than "soon" and "when it's ready" like we've been getting since 2006
Im sorry i dont care who is making a list. If anyone who ever played mmo's is honest u cant have a list of top 3 without wow.

I would flame you for your post here, but from what I have read I can only assume you would lack the comprehension to understand the point I would be trying to make.
Well i'am pretty green to MMORPG's and seem to have a problem with sticking to them.. I started with AION (sorta played Diablo 2 on and off for 8+ years but no one considers it a MMORPG) and that is actually the one i stuck with the longest until i found out about its end game, or lack of.. And failed miragents/fenrils leggings a few times.. But i'd say my best memories are with AION, maybe because it was my first real MMO or maybe because i actually really liked the 1-40 content.. Other then that i had a really good time with EvE which would prolly be my second favorite MMO..
So i'd say
AION (1-40lvl content lol)
EvE Online
Heroes of Three Kingdoms (current f2p MMO i'am playing and have been sticking with it for a while i'am enjoying it alot)
I'am really banking on SWTOR to be my favorite MMO of all time haha.. I guess we'll see.
Currently Playing: Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta

Sheesh, this thread really got beaten with the nostalgia stick.
My blog:

In no particular order

When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
I would flame you for your post here, but from what I have read I can only assume you would lack the comprehension to understand the point I would be trying to make.
You sir, are the typical WoW player. 'Nuff said.

I should add I have hopes for SWTOR and World of Darkness, but neither is what I like most - classic fantasy.
Still SWTOR looks like it would be a good quest focused MMO without any boring grinds.
And World of Darkness has the bonus of being super stylish and we know nothing about it yet.
Shadowbane
UO
WoW
I am more into pvp, playing sc2 and having a hope on GW2.
1. UO
2. SWG (pre-cu)
3. EVE
