Runescape: now here me out here for a second runescape has some massive content for its cost (5 bucks at most a month!) Theres lots of skills, not class locked etc... And techinically its a sandbox mmo option for some hardcore pvp (on the pvp servers of course) Now even dungeons... It was also my first mmo so it gets points for that XD
EQ2 just quite simply a fun game
WoW no matter who you are you cannot say that WoW is not incrediably polished and, just a good game. It's no secret as to why WoW did so well. I'm personally on the fence about this game but still it deserves its rightful place in MMO history.
*honorable mention* Quite guiltly I love Dungeon FIghter online.... It's a great F2P
Playing: Ever quest 2 Played: MS,GW,EVE,LOTRO,WoW,Allods,Aion, CO,CoH,CoV,TQ Digital games, Darkfall,AoC,RS2. Liked: Dungeon fight online, GW, Darkfall and, Runescape. Waiting for: Link Realms(can't get my damn beta invite) KOTOR and, GW2
Atlantica because it is unique. It is the only turn-based MMORPG that I know. As such, strategy is important since you will have to choose 9 characters from several classes to build what you think is a balanced party. Strategy is also involved when coming up with good formations, and method to defeat the enemy. It is not only a hack-and-slash game but it involves more thinking.
Aika Global because its PVP is very good. The relic wars among the nations make the game very exciting. The community is also very good with a lot of players willing to help you whether in doing dungeons or defeating a boss. I once shouted out to help me defeat a boss and two people came running to help me. One of which was from a faraway town but he came all the way to help me. The Pran system is also cool and soooo cute! She's like a very cute child.
Runescape because there are a lot of players and it is browser-based. As such, I don't need to download and just play the game whenever I want to.
Played: Runescape, Adventure Quest Currently playing: Aika Global, Atlantica Online Waiting for: Cardmon Hero, Dynasty Warriors Online
Amazing how many people have UO as one of their Top 3.
Not really, was one of the first for a lot of folks:) Stii amazes me really, how much they got right way back then that it seems a lot of the newer games struggle to find.
Housing, fishing, mining, crafting, treasure hunting, dungeons, skill gain on use of skills, Taming..for its time it was heck of a game:P If they could of come up with a way to tame the ganking of da care bears and newbs , without the world split, would not of taken such a hit i think too.
Oh well back on topic:P
E&B
UO
Not sure lot of em kinda tie for third to me.
I agree with you on that. I really look forward to seeing some new ideas in MMO world. To me the new MMORPGs are mostly repetitive and grind just with different graphics and different monsters. The same thing happened in Game world in general. In the first generation of games there were many different new ideas but then everything changed to better graphics and development of next versions of popular games with minor changes. To me the same thing is happening now for social gaming like Facebook games. Maybe it is inevitable to some extent because of the business aspect of it.
AC was my first, started playing when I was about 8 and quit around 12, but I still have fond memories of it. My dad still plays to this day, so who know I might get back to it sometime.
LOTRO... I've only been playing it for about a month, but I am still pretty awed at how into it I'm getting. Unfortunately, I am a SLOW LEVELER. Good god I can't seem to rush myself in this game.
COH? Well, it was a blast, but I only played it for three months. Ended up just really bored of the repetition. And once I discovered the AE, I couldn't stop myself from grinding out some quick levels, and completely ignoring the missions. Oh well, I'll get my superhero fix some other way

OMG I cannot believe I am going to say this, but WoW has become my all time fave for overall game play...I have PvE, crafting and PvP all in one game...and think it offers me what I like in a game right now...(it could be so much better though!).
My list(may change in the future as it has in the past).
1) World of Warcraft - this game is by far the best game currently on the market.
2) Tie Vanguard - OMG why did they sell out to SOE and let this great game waste away as it has been since? So much potential - gone. SWG -preNGE - another SOE title that got mucked up by SOE. SWG was a great game it SOE hadn't of screwed it up!
3) DAoC
Honorable mention goes to Asheron's Call(Darktide server). Back in the day Asheron's Call was the cat's meow in my eyes. I really wish Turbine would release a true Asheron's Call successor that takes all that is good from the first game and the second(Tumeroks!) and make a Asheron's Call 2.
Shout out to Planetside for some of my funnest and most intense PvP memories.
EVE just frustrates the bejeezes out of me, not so much the game but CCP. CCP's game is so not polished and it should be. It also lacks one key thing - human avatars! OMG! We're not gettingthem until 2011?! Are you serious CCP?! Just keep dangling that proverbial carrot...this is my last month to subscribe until you put Incarna in complately and if it isn't any good and all we can do is walk around stations and look out windows - forget it! Tired of waiting on vaporware. 6 years this has been promised and we're still waiting!

Man and I thought you'd be really happy that they have finally commited to an actual specific launch date rather than "soon" and "when it's ready" like we've been getting since 2006

You do realize Turbine owns that IP and made the other two games correct?
The first game is still running and it is still a fantastic game, it is just a fact that many people choose shiny graphics over solid gameplay in modern times. So if you need to have cutting edge graphics then don't play AC. If you want to have a blast and play an amazing game with a lot of content, then jump back in.

"Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars combat, exploration and character progression. In Alganon, in addition to these we've added the fourth pillar to the equation: Copy & Paste."
Everquest 1 - Popped my mmo cherry. No other game has ever come close to making me feel the way I did when I first started playing this game back in 1999. It's like your first real girlfriend; you never forget her.
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - The true successor to Everquest 1, imho. This game had so much potential to be one of the greatest MMO's in the fantasy genre. To date, I have never played a game where healer classes were so unique as they are in Vanguard. I have two level 50's and would guess I have only explored about 60-70% of the world/dungeons/quests. Lets not forget player crafted boats. Nothing like sailing out to sea to drink beer and fish the open waters with a few friends.
Dark Age of Camelot - Not many games even compare to how epic DAoC's pvp/rvr was. I never really enjoyed pvp/rvr until I played DAoC. Not to mention the first time I ever experienced player housing. Nothing more gratifying than taking down a raid boss and placing its head taxidermy style in the guild hall.
Im sorry i dont care who is making a list. If anyone who ever played mmo's is honest u cant have a list of top 3 without wow.
Not if u look at it logicly and from a purely commercial success standpoint. I know wow haters will say commercial success doesnt make wow a top 3 game i disagree
The reason wow is a commercial success and has 11.5 mil subs way more then the closest game out there is because wait for it wait for it. Its the best mmo going. No game hits 11.5 mil subs if its not a good game
U can put up daoc and all these others above them and throw wow into your well they may make the top 10 list crap. but the truth is wow is easily by far the best game on market.
I have played warhammer, ive played ddo and ive tried lotro. ive treid guild wars 1 and a few others none of them came close to being anywhere near as fun or entertaining as wow. they didnt even belong on the same page as wow.
I can understand for nostalgia sake people putting up daoc and if u love pvp eve. The problem is if u look at success wow is easily number 1 and maybe u dont personally like it but a list of top 3 mmos without wow on it just shows u as a wow hater.
To keep the top mmo in the world off a list of top 3 is just wrong. wow to me is easily number 1 and since i havent found another game i like wow is the only game on my list
when some of these games othes listed in top 3 hit 1 mil subs come talk to me. I understand some of them may be free 2 playtitles. but teven the best estimates of the top free 2 play titles users dont come close to wows sub base.
Asherons Call (Darktide PvP server) - No contest the best MMORPG combined with real territorial control PvP and a superior skillbased system. No other MMORPG has come close to the immersion and PvP that this game had to offer.
Ultima Online - My first MMORPG and as such is second on my list. The magic system and fighting system was a bit limited and it was not in 3D so could not holds it own once Asherons Call was released (atleast not for me). And the fact that it was completely skillbased and no exp what so ever made it pointless to fight uber mobs like dragons (except for the loot).
Warhammer Online - Had zero immersion and tiny world with instanced battlegrounds but was the first game to offer easily accessible PvP which was fun to partake in. Also liked the idea of Public Quests.
1. Rubies of Eventide - Not my first MMO, but the most fun I have ever had playing a game. Too bad it is gone now.
2. WoW - Played off and on since beta. Always come back.
3. LOTRO - Very fun game.
Other games that could have been #3 - DAoC, DDO, EQ2, RoM, and Silkroad. Silkroad could have been one of the best games ever if it wasn't for the bots that keep you from logging in for 30 minutes at a time.

2-Eve (No explanation needed)
3-Anarchy Online (Back in the day this game was magic)

(followed by WOW, WAR, STO (for a month or two) and SWG (NGE sucked but i love the space expansion; JTL)
PS;
Unfortunately i am not fimiliar with the older MMO ilk such as EQ and UO....
1. World of Warcraft: I don't play the game anymore, but only because i got burned out after 5 solid years of playing

3. There is no number 3. I've played more than 20 other mmo's, but none are even worth mentioning.
