Another strange thing is that it's actually doing far worse in Japan when it comes to their ratings. I thought at least the numbers would be similar. Compare these:

Strangely, some 5 star reviews have disappeared from Amazon Japan. I'm guessing that when people don't find the review helpful enough times, you get nixed. But I can't be sure.

Here is the US one. It seems like there are a lot more people that give this game 5 stars in the English version of Amazon as a percentage.

I had originally thought that this game would do a bit better in Japan. Now it's looking to actually do a bit better in the US. I am confused.

Man, are people seriously saying it's an engaging story line?  Are we playing the same game?  Because all that's there for story so far are some cut nice cut scenes and running around from A to B to talk to NPCs.  Nothing real engaging yet, after reaching player level 20 and 10-14 multiple class levels.

I mean, after you finish one main quest line, you have to grind for another 5 skill levels.  That completely kills the mood and flow of the story.  And I assume the chunks of time in between each story bit will become longer as you reach the higher levels.  Maybe an hour of story then 10-15hours of generic asian MMO grinding...yeah, that's real immersive.

Geldonyetich, I think you should get a medal for most arduous FFXIV fanboy and crusader on these forums. Your responses always follow a wall of text which usually make me roll my eyes and skip your posts. But after reading this snippet of bullshit, I couldn't sit still without saying how full of shit you actually are.

Intense engaging storyline - you say you're fine with criticism but you hate lies and exxageration? Then why are you blatantly lying and exaggerating regarding this "engaging" storyline? Are you sure we played the same game? All I remember doing is fighting 3 crummy ghosts on a ship, seeing a giant Leviathan destroy my ship (not even that cool) and then arrive at a city with subpar graphics. How is this different and more engaging than any other MMO? My hand is being held all the way and it's quite simple to get to point A and then to point B. The characters in the game are so cliché and nonchalant (and the typos.. dear god, did they even QA this game?) that I was skipping most of the dialogue since the setting and context of the story are technically non-existent. I still have no idea what my role is within this "gigantic," bland world and what I'm supposed to be doing? Engaging storyline? Are you sure we're playing the same game? Maybe you actually enjoy talking to every single NPC in the game, but I certainly don't give the clunky ass interface and laggy menus. You should be ashamed of yourself for lying to others just to make yourself feel better.

Promise of a more involved social experience - again, are we playing the same game? The assertions that the game is like a ghost town are 100% true. Nobody uses the /sh command. Or if people are trying to respond back to me then they don't know about the /sh and /tell command (even when I spam in the channel that's how you answer back to me). So far, I haven't had the need to find a Linkshell, make friends or do anything that requires human interaction. At least, other players seem to think so as well.

Most quiet MMO I've ever played - now this is the icing on the cake. Someone complains that the game is too quiet, and you tell them to get on mIRC if they're looking to chat AFTER YOU JUST BRAGGED ABOUT THE GAME DELIVERING A MORE INVOLVED SOCIAL EXPERIENCE?! Are you fucking insane?! Or is your fanboyism zeal so ardent that it's blinding you from the truth?

If you're gonna rag on other people for making shit up, don't make shit up yourself. It makes you look like an even bigger moron.

    LOLMAO  2 thumbs UP!!!

"Niche" is the new  "it's BETA" and "22 gigs on release, SEE!  TONS of new content."  Just an echo chamber of nonsense.

It is like I said before.  People seem to tie their likes into their own personal self worth.  Therefore, they are unable to criticize anything they like or see validity in such.  I find this sad.

Love the irony on this one, so telling about the individual isn't it. Like how he rags on another poster about there being a crappy story line, yet all he knows of it is the first story quest line, and not even the entire thing. Wonder if he even made it to the Lighthouse huh? He is probably already close to level 20 and not even bothered to find the level 10 story chain quests yet. Most likely spent close to 40+ hours grinding and couldn't spend even one of those looking for the story quests, but still has enough time to come here and bitch about them not being there at all - when they are, he just didnt look.

Same with the linkshells, wont' take the effort to find and join a linkshell, but plenty of time to come here and bitch about nobody wants to talk to him. No, really, everyone is talking, just not to you - they are talking in thier linkshells - A LOT. This game is crawling with social networking, more chatter than any game I have ever played, and that includes the Barrens chat. And no this is not fanboyism as you like to call it, its reality. Your anti-social, you are intraverted and refuse to take the effort to join the community, thats all this is.

Buck up, be a man, and ask to join a linkshell. If not, be all by yourself and pout in the corner cause noone likes you. As for the qeusting, its the same deal man, YOU have to go look for it - its not going to be spoon fed to you. It is there, if you havent' found it then its all your own fault for not trying. If you dont like that too freaking bad, thats the way this game is, either get on board with how the game plays or stop playing it. It really is that simple.

So... you just made up what you assume this guy may have done, and then pretended your assumption was fact in an attempt to discredit him?

    Makes sense.

So... you just made up what you assume this guy may have done, and then pretended your assumption was fact in an attempt to discredit him?

    Makes sense.

Oh look, someone else who doesn't read but likes to assume in thier insulting. Here let me show you what he said above (incase you didnt read it the first time). Help clear up what you missed my friend.

"All I remember doing is fighting 3 crummy ghosts on a ship, seeing a giant Leviathan destroy my ship (not even that cool) and then arrive at a city with subpar graphics."

"I was skipping most of the dialogue since the setting and context of the story are technically non-existent. I still have no idea what my role is within this "gigantic," bland world and what I'm supposed to be doing?"

This is his idea of the ENTIRE story line as he puts it in his own words, not mine. I didnt' assume anythign there when I said...

"all he knows of it is the first story quest line, and not even the entire thing. Wonder if he even made it to the Lighthouse huh?"

Still with me there? Or are you still thinking I am assuming what he did?  And pretended my assumptions were fact...yeah, there is more to that lvl 1 story line quest than what he calls ALL of it. You do have to go to three different guild, do an escort quest, learn how to do emotes, and learn about the rest of the story. If he had done that he would have said that, but he in fact didnt, all he mentioned was the very first part that is required to get into Limsa and thats it. Personally I doubt he was even given his first linkpearl from the sounds of it.

As for his rant on socialization in this game, lets look at that too shall we. (in case you missed this too in your reading).

"The assertions that the game is like a ghost town are 100% true. Nobody uses the /sh command."

"So far, I haven't had the need to find a Linkshell, make friends or do anything that requires human interaction. At least, other players seem to think so as well."

This looks pretty cut and dry to me, he thinks nobody talks to anyone in this game. He thinks /tell and /shout are the only means of communication. And since he isn't hearing Barren's style chatter on them he thinks there is no socialization going on in this game. He is wrong, not an assumption, this is a fact. /tell is person to person private message, if nobody wants to talk to you this way then you wont get any. The /shout is NOT a global to the entire zone, not even the entire city. Its a much smaller area than what most are accustom to in MMOs. Shout is more realistic here, it caries about as far as you would expect a real person shouting would be heard. So i he is expecting that everyone SHOULD be using /shout to talk to everyone, he is sorely mistaken.

The real chatter in this game is takign place in the linkshells. Linkshells function more like guild chat does in other games. You are only able to communicate over long distances in this game by use of a linkpearl. You get a linkpearl when you join a linkshell. Currently each character can join from 1 to 10 linkshells, and monitor the chatter in them all at once if they lilke, or use the chat filters to monitor only the ones they want. The outside world may seem quiet to some if they are not in linkshells, because the chatter is happening in them. Its liek being in the real world, you can hear the local chatter around you like the /say in game. You can even hear the chatter of the people yelling from the other room like the /shout in game. But you can't hear the conference call chatter from the 15 people in the next city over unless your on that conference call, the /linkshell in game.

Then that brings us to his final two comments (again in case you didnt read it)

"Are you fucking insane?! Or is your fanboyism zeal so ardent that it's blinding you from the truth?"

"If you're gonna rag on other people for making shit up, don't make shit up yourself. It makes you look like an even bigger moron."

To which I replied back with my last paragraph pointing out that he should in fact stop spending time on here being what he is callign others and actually try and play this game the way it is meant to eb played. That appearantly pissed you off, because you think I was out of line for being 100% honest and truthful, and responding to his rant with reality. And again, I'm sorry if you dont like that, but these are the real facts, not the crap that is being made up on these forums to further agendas. If you want to be part of the communication in FFXIV you do need to join a linkshell, its just that simple. If yuo want to see the content in FFXIV then you do need to go look for it, it will not come to you, that is just the reality of it. And if you refuse to do those, your lack of enjoyment of FFXIV will be entirely caused by you, and you alone.

Now, if you would like to comment back on how I made up my facts in an attempt to discredit this poster, please feel free. However, it would be advisable to back up your bullshit with something more than your mouth. Unlike some of the people here, I am actually playing this game, and seeing what is really there. If someone comes back like this guy saying there is no content, and there really is, I'm going to make a point of calling them out on there lack of knowledge. Its fine to post your dislikes, but at least make an attempt to be informed prior to posting your opinions.

Kaocan, seriously you are just making yourself look like a fool, and honestly that isn't meant to be taken in a bad way.  These people have played, even if just as far as open beta.  Its not like its changed.  Amongst many other issues the game is content light to the extreme, something even fans (ie. not fanbois) of the game acknowledge.  Linkshells are well and good, but do isolate communication, taking away from world immersion.

You are welcome to like it, but you're creating pure fiction as to the standard and quaility of the game.  I'd suggest having some dignity and accept (like others) the game will improve with time.  It may even eventually be one of the best MMOs around.  Although it has to make that journey, as its currently got a long way to go.

You are welcome to like it, but you're creating pure fiction as to the standard and quaility of the game.

The game is content light in the way people are trying to play it and not in the way it was intended to be played by the devs. They have stated during Beta on many occasions that they exepcted people to work together and 'share' thier levequests, and that by doing so there would be plenty of them to last the time between. I assert this is fact because I have seen and done so with one of my linkshells. We had one girl the other night mention how she always shows up to help everyone on thiers (she is a healer) but we never get around to doing her levelquests before the team breaks up each day (hours and hours of playing). We always have teams running every night, always plenty to do, as a matter of fact we never have enough time in a week to get everything done we really want to. So does this mean we are playing a different game than you guys? Nope, just means we are playing it more towards what the devs desired it would be played like.

I can honestly see how you guys would feel if you didnt take advantage of being in multiple linkshells, you would feel quietly ignored and with little to do. It must be lonely out there for you all that have no desire to socialize and have fun together. But again, as I have stated before this is not the games fault or anyone else fault, but your own. The game has the design already, the functionality is there and very well built for doing this. Your lack of utalizing these tools, and being able to join in on the games play style is not the fault of the game. If you really wish to say the game is grind, and it has no content, yet never take the time or effort to even look for the 2nd part of the main story line quests, well then again, not the games fault is it. There is a difference between loggin into FFXIV and looking around and actually playing FFXIV. If you are dead set on being a loner then you will miss out on a ton of what this game gives. It is there, that is the fact of it all.

It is not something I am creating as pure fiction, it is something you and so mnay others fail to see. The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend. Open you mind, maybe you will see it too one day. Until you do, it doesn't mean it isnt there, just that you dont see it. Dont make it to be anything more than that, because it isn't anything more than that.

I have fun playing this game because I have literally hundreds of other people I play with every day, there is never less than 50 online at every point in time accross my linkshells. There is always someone in one of them that is lookign for people to help with a levequest someplace, always someone looking to have some gear made, looking to sell somethign they built, looking for someone to gather some mat for them, always an off the wall topic being discussed that makes you laugh in real life. This is what I see when I look at FFXIV, not if my UI gave me a 1 second delay, or if my FPS aren't always above 60. No, I look at FFXIV and see what is there, the game, not the interface to a game. Hopefully more people will start loking past the interface and see whats really there and have fun like I am. But that is all up to you now isn't it, nobody can force you to open your eyes. If all you want to see is the bleak and shadowy than that is all you will see. Oh and if all this makes me the fool, for seeing the good, having fun in a game, enjoying the company of hundreds more having fun every day with me, well then so be.

(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)

Looking past all the pathetic bugs SE let through is easy enough.  But it breaks the immersion, breaks the fun factor when you have to deal with frustrations that should've been resolved before launch.

Launch is here now.  We can criticize the game however we want.  All of you told us to wait until launch, because SE would have an ace up their sleeve and deliver a completely new game!  Well, it's here.  And now all of those people are going "You can't judge a MMO in it's first week!  Wait at least 3 months before reviewing it!"....lol, pathetic.

The gem is there.  But it's so littered with dirt poor decisions and execution that it's no different then how a lot of other mediocre started off.  You don't need to play the MMO from start to max level to see where the game is going, and how it plays.  Turning a blind eye on things that matter, like UI functionality, isn't helping anyone.  You're encouraging SE to be half assed about their programming and are encouraging other MMO developers that, hey you know what, we can release a game that would definitely get a D in MMO school cause people are still going to play it.

    You fanboys are pathetic.

Like I said in other discussions, This game is boring as hell as it stands now. The only real part of the game I enjoyed was the crafting, but even that gets frustrating at times. Even more so since last patch.

That's every asian MMO ever. If this game isn't even fun enough for the grindcentric asian audience, that should tell you something haha.

It is like I said before.  People seem to tie their likes into their own personal self worth.  Therefore, they are unable to criticize anything they like or see validity in such.  I find this sad.

Vangaurd was 20 gigs on release too. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

It only took them 3 years or so to patch in the game, maybe square will deliver too. Eventually. Maybe. I guess. Though, there's no mechanics anywhere near as enthralling as vanguard had. "U gIT 2 LVl dffrnt clsss on 1 T00n!" Oh yay, that's what I wanted. The ability to roll alts on the same guy. That'll come in handy when there's maybe eventually some content in the future I guess. Then I get to navigate a menu(for the record, it's 2010. Just saying.), during the "slower than a bad early 70s american 'kung-fu' flick" combat, and use punch instead of the normal stab. Riveting.

And for the record, and yes this is a fact, people who bitch and whine post more on internet forums than people who don't bitch and whine. To say that constitutes the majority of everyone is bullshit, plain and simple. All it means is the majority of the people who like to bitch and whine are currently bitching and whining. And if you really think the people that like this game are in the minority, well then why not just leave us the hell alone already? You dont liek the game, we get it. Do we care, nope. Are we ever going to care, nope. Do we think the game needs to be redone completely, nope. Do we think there are things that would be nice to be changed/tweaked, sure - so does everyone that plays every game out there.

Seriously, how many pages of hatred do we have to put up with until all you people that are NOT PLAYING THIS GAME will go away? Just curious here?? And if that question offends or pisses you off, just reply back with what game you play so I can go to your games section and bash on it for the next 4 months, while I'm not playing it.

When the people go away Square will be in financial trouble.  Throw the word "niche" around all you want.  It will not change reality.

Hmmm, show me once in my entire post you quoted there that I even have the word 'niche' that your claiming I'm throwing all around. Seriously - READ BEFORE YOU TROLL!!

"Troll" is also the new way to simply ad hominem someone else while skirting the rules of forums.

I never said you used the word niche, but others of your ilk have and it is of the same theme to your post.  The second sentence was merely an added comment after the first sentence, which was a response to you.

Now now, Kaocan is right about this...

This is true, I've found that if you, for instance, play using only your left hand(if you are right handed that is) you essentially double how long it takes you to go through the "content" of the game and it makes combat a little less boring.

Other suggestions for how to play the game right:

-Take a shot of bourbon every time you catch a translation error

-Try to finish a randomly generated intermediate difficulty game of mindsweeper before you finish off the mob you are fighting

-Let your 5 year old kid play in your place, operating only by your vocal commands.

-Do 3 pushups everytime you see a goldfarmer, get texted by a gold farmer or see a goldfarmer shout.  FFXIV will pump you up!

-Take a bountiful amount of lsd before every game session

There are countless options for playing this game the right way.

LMAO off at this hehe. I will add a couple...

    • Punch yourself in one of your eyes as hard as you can everytime you finish a guildleve--err sorry-- a QUEST and alternate each eye with every guildleve finished. Granted you will have punched yourself in each eye four times and will long for the 36 hour cooldown on quests, but you will toughn up that face or at least look like you get in a lot of fights.

    • Conduct play sessions while sitting on a three legged stool with one broken leg.

    • Perform a lobotomy on yourself while playing (this actually makes the game more challenging after you finish the lobotomy but it might also make the game

    • Dual box

Update on the original link.  Several more reviews have been posted since the 9/30 release.  Much of the same feeling by the users as I read through them all.

Amazon Japan now has a substantial amount of user reviews on the CE and reg. version. both of which are at 1.5 / 5 stars.

Terrific. The fanbois shall go into hiding, or create false realities of their perfect game. Either way, it's quite hilarious.
