Yeah its F2P for existing customers do i have to spell it out? Anyone who wants to buy it for them its B2P. I know the difference between F2P and B2P..CHAP!! doesn't change the fact that right now you don't have to pay a monthly fee for this mess.
Existing customers didn't have to buy the game? Awesome.
They already did that and their free 30 day time (which came alongwith the box) is long gone. yeah it is awesome.

Regarding the news. Not surprised at all. B2P or F2P main point is that you don't have to pay any monthly fee but this will mostly help the existing loyal customers. Anyone who will buy this game will still quit withing couple of weeks due to lack of content.
About f*cking time. Maybe the game will actually start moving in the right direction now... I just got the email, and find it absolutely hilarious. Delayed payments indefinitely and a delayed PS3 version, yikes.
It was already, hopefully it will happen faster now.
Your opinion. It needs to happen MUCH faster.
The reason the game launched in its current state is because they didn't spend enough time fine-tuning game systems, fixing issues and adding in core/basic content that should have been there in the first place.
The reason the game has been so horribly received and is getting the negative press and feedback it is, is because they got it out too quickly.
Some... many, actually... are already arguing it was rushed to market.
Are you now suggesting that they need to rush it further?
Seems to me that would only be adding fuel to the fire, would it not?
That said...
This is pretty huge. Tanaka stepping down needed to happen, in my opinion. If not for "public face", then for the fact that he just didn't seem to be "getting" it. There were decisions made for FFXIV's development that made no sense in any way. Some were brought up in Beta and the response was basically "no no... we have great things planned for this system and it'll pan out fine. You'll see".
Only it didn't, and now they're left apologizing for it.
Huge news to be sure and, to me, heartening as it shows they're quite serious about turning this game around.
The only thing I hope that doesn't include, is the game going F2P. I'll stick with SE through anything they need to do to get this game where it should be... But the moment they say it's going F2P with a Cash Shop... Personally, I'm gone.

Ayep.
Had a great discusion with some ls-mates on Ventrilo about this last night.
After 7+ years, they got various systems in XI to work great. Yes, there were imperfections and yes they could have used improvement at the concept level to make them work even better... Enter FFXIV, where they could have done just that.
Of course, they did what SE always seems to do, and went off in completely different tangents.
I don't blame them for wanting to do something different (I mean, isn't that what many people argue they want to see more of in the MMO space anyway?). But they went off in the wrong directions, in areas they didn't need to and, I'd argue, shouldn't have.
But... All water under the bridge now isn't it?
Now it's all about what they can do to turn it around.
Shall be interesting.

Bold and interesting move. I commend the open statement of their failure. Hopefully my $50 purchase of the game helps them keep things going to improve but making this game have no sub in no way is enticing me to play ever again. The game is poorly designed at the very heart of the game. Vanguard is a great game at it's core and ideas, but it failed terribly in polish. This game failed in all categories and I am very skeptical this game will ever turn around. It's not 2004, no speculation that this game can turn around like FFXI is valid. There are WAY too many games on the market now and even WoW's new expansion is stellar, there is a very small chance this game will make it.

Rushing will only lead to disaster and shittiness, theres no monthly fee until its in a state of awesomeness, ao they should take their sweet time and make sure to get it just right.
If they take their sweet time, GW2, SWTOR, RIFT and TERA will also be options. They need a quality speed type thing, which I meant but you didn't catch.
Nor did I. I suspect others who read that remark didn't get that from it either.

They just need to make it better than XI, which is no hard task at this point. That game is great, but not new player friendly, nor has the appeal of a new game.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
It's too late, this game is dead and buried as far as MMORPGs go. It will never achieve the success of its predecessor and will never catch up to the next-gen titles that will dwarf this game. I'm not sure how bad it's doing in Japan, but if it's as bad as it's doing in America, it seems dead already.

Anyways, i agree if game turns around which is not going to happen anytime sooner, it is going to be tough to move from B2P to monthly fee. people are going to get used to no monthly fee thing. And if they started charging monthly fee now, they will lose whatever players are left in game. Its like a double edge sword.

At least they have honor in defeat... Not charging a dime for this mess was the only thing to do for it to have any chance of coming back one day. Great news!
Now, I didn't see anywhere that they were going to scrap the leves system... thats where they need to start imo.
Unless thats what they mean by " addressing these issues will call for a reworking of game elements."
Tbh though, they will have to pull a miracle out of thin air to bring this game back to compete with the 2011 heavy hitters.
GL Naoki Yoshida... you'll need it.
Not even getting rid of them, in my opinion.
I think the concept is great, and carries several other aspects of the game.
I think they just need to make them more interesting. They have this great Assault system in FFXI that has a variety of different tasks that are - in large part - quite interesting, fun, challenging and very few of which entail "killing x of y". Those kinds of scenarios will lend themselves beautifully to something like the leve system. They're very similar in their basic concept. Time-limited tasks to be carried out, with difficulty selection and varying group sizes that have a reward proportionate to the difficulty of the task and the number of people participating.
They just need a bit more imagination with them.

No but it is almost common knowledge at this point that FFXIV was released in the state it is now to avoid direct competition with Cataclysm, Rift, Tera, SWTOR, or GW2.. I think they will already have a tough time a head of them as it is even without having to worry about competition with the other AAA MMORPG's on the horizon.
1) Square Enix has taken some hits on the market and dosn't nearly have as much money to throw into developement as it did years back.. I'am sure they can find some investors for this game, but not many.
2) they are no longer collecting subs for the game.. and honestly im sure there wern't much to begin with.. Once again a money issue.
3)Alot of the team for FFXIV has been replaced.. Even the new leader producer said this unfimilar grounds for him
4)Lack of money and a new team working on this game = slow development on patches = direct competition with AAA MMORPG's (already competeing with cataclysm.)
Currently Playing: Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
I believe the games about to come out in 2011 will just be so far ahead of FFXIV that there will be no point to play FFXIV unless it goes totally F2P.
And this is going to be the tricky part for Square Enix. How do you convince or justify to your players (who have been playing a 'free' game for 3-6 months or how ever long it takes) that it is now worth paying for?
A number of people have been saying that from the start; that they'll pay a subscription when SE gets the game where it should be.
And... enough word of mouth can do some good as well. If people - particularly those who have been especially critical of the game - come around and say "you know... I think they've finally gotten XIV to the status of a MMO worth a subscription".. there *are* people who will be influenced by it.
Will it be like "omg overnight explosion and XIV's population soars into the millions"? Nope.
I don't think their population will ever soar even to 1 million at this point. That time is past.. unless they do some *major* revamping that really blows people's socks off.
However, if they can get the population back to a steady 400 or 500k... that would be fine for them, once they get out of the red with the game and start turning profit. For example, FFXI has been a cash cow for them for years now.

Well as unimpressed with the game as I have been I must say I am impressed with the companies reaction. It has a long ways to go and it's nice to see them offer the game as buy to play until they figure out a direction to take the game in.
While the game likely won't ever reach the level of success of FFXI especially with more innovative games coming out around the corner it may at least recoup the initial investment.
Hard to believe that just last year FFXI was still sporting 500k subs when FFXIV couldn't break the 100k mark lol. But making a game as good as FFXI again won't be an easy task. That IT factor isn't easy to pin down always.
Lets just hope they learned shiny graphics are not the be all end all. If you need to sacrifice some graphics in the name of game play you do it. While FFXIV is the better looking game XI is simply the better game in every possible way. I hope the team gets that this time around.
Some ideas worth keeping in mind for XIV would be Garrison, Besieged, Campaign, and things like that as in the end these were the most popular things. It was FFXI's version of Dynamic Events almost lol. Not quite dynamic but they could always be expanded on to become that.
In any case defending against Beastman raids and sieges with others has always been fun and one of the greatest things about FFXI. To bad they couldn't improve upon the combat that was in FFXI, bring over Campaign and Besieged and improved upon them (ala GW2), and created the rest of the world in a fairly unique way.
People like options. Questing and Grinding are the traditional routes for leveling now days but... FFXI's Besieged and Campaign were a bit innovative in it's day and seem to be fairly similar to next years big "innovation" with many newer MMO's boasting Dynamic events that in the end are very similar to FFXI's campaign and besieged systems but expanded upon.
It's a bit sad to see FFXIV being one of the only new MMO's missing the boat on this considering how similar the campaign and besieged systems are to the newer Dynamic Event systems.

Yes... as a topic by itself, they certainly do have those other MMOs to compete with. I dont' think anyone would contest that.
My point was, Benthon assumed that people would know that by saying "It needs to happen MUCH faster", that people would automatically know he meant "it needs to happen MUCH faster because other MMOs are coming down the road that SE is going to have to compete with and if it takes them too long..." etc. etc.
The thing is... he could have said it in terms of "I'm getting impatient waiting for them to get the game into proper shape". He could have meant "they're losing too much money with all the free play time"... He could have been saying it just for the sake of saying it.
There are many things that single statement, unqualified, could have been pertaining to. That's all I was getting at.
I'm not disagreeing with the time-frame of other MMOs coming out at all.

Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta

XI has been hovering around the 300k subs mark since the end of 2008 or so.
XIV sold more than 500k copies initially, so they did break it.
