400k-500k players isn't that much when you consider the game is out in the US, Europe, Japan, China, France
400k+ is a huge number when you are looking at games outside of the WOW bracket. You could most probably combine all the major (big name studios) game releases for the past 3-4 years and they would be lucky to have over 500k active paying subscribers combined.
WAR, AoC, Aion, STO, CO etc. sold hundreds of thousands of copies and then promptly nose-dived into the relam of server mergers to support their dwindling subscriber base after mass exoduses from the respective games. No, I don't believe that FFXIV will ever see numbers in the hundred of thousands, as I said earlier, high tens at best. It doesn't mean that it can't ever be a good game, I just don't feel that it will be a game that will ever appeal to the masses regardless of the changes that are made. The game's name has been tarnished by this debacle and in 6 onths time many who may have been at one time interested in the game will more than likely have moved on. Why wait around hoping for a game to get better, when there is still a chance that it won't?
Just a small correction for this really oO... Aion still has millions of subs lol. It's second only to WoW. 3.5 mil in Asia alone, at least last time I checked in on it. They had roughly 5 mil to start with but dwindled to 3.5 mil. While thats a huge dip... it's still well over 500k.
I should have been more clear that I was referring to the western market. Asia is a beast of a different kind.
All they had to do was update the UI and combat mechanics of XI and they would have had a fantastic hit on their hands.
Your post is conflicting. The party system wasn't good- this game has better system (not perfect). The economy wasn't good. Simply leaving them as-is would have been a disaster, and we both know it.
Don't let the nostalgia fool you.
I was trying to avoid a long post about every little thing and just mentioned the 2 biggest ones in my eyes. Building from there would have been a step in the right direction.
SE's track record of fixing a player run economy is laughable though. I personally don't think they can do it without hurting everyone in the process.

OMG I know right? SE has taught me a valuable lesson about themselves and companies in general. I was such a fanboy for SE. But then ff13 came out and that was bollocks... but my real hopes had been set on ff14 anyways cause i love me some multiplayer, so i didnt care much. And then I spent 2.5k preparing for FF14 and then it releases and its a pile o'bollocks. And i was like whoa! A whole lotta bollocks coming my way from SE. And thats the story.

Just got that in my email too. Interesting point is right here, IMHO:
As stated above, the newly restructured team's top priority is to bring about improvements to the game's enjoyability, and therefore we have decided to extend the free trial period until we can provide a plan that outlines a level of enjoyment that will satisfy both us and our customers. When we are confident that we have reached that goal, we will notify our customers immediately.
In other words, subscription payments suspended indefinately.
Consider my account reactivated. This $75 collector's edition is turning out to be cheaper than most P2P MMORPGs after all.
I kinda feel sorry they underwent a major development re-org because I'm honestly not sure it's the developers fault. It was just pushed to market before they got around to adding enough content to satisfy or streamline the engine. The engine was well streamlined in the November megapatch, but the content is still deeply lacking.
Weren't you the guy that was on here EVERY day defending this game at launch and telling everyone that didn't like the game that they were too stupid to get it and that it was their fault, not the game?

I dont think its very big of you to rub his face in the fact that he was defending his right to try a game out, and it happened to suck. Some people had more faith in SE then was deserved and were'nt about to not try a game made by one of their favorite developers because somone on the internet told them they'd be stupid to do so.
I call the game shitty all the time now. But I never say anything about others for playing it. Unless they say shit about me, then I retort.

If only FailCom had been this forthcoming with the AoC release debacle, they might have counted me as a customer for Secret World. Screw ups are forgiveable of you own up to them. I still won't ever be playing an FF game, but at least I have some respect for the company now. Hopefully they will be able to salvage something worthwhile for their fans.

Wow, this smells of disaster. I had hoped FF14 would eventually evolve into a better game and in some ways I had faith it would, and continued to wait to buy it until that day. But such a drastic change not only in team, but that they've extended the free trial indefinitely...some may see that as a sign of good faith, but I think it's just as likely they plan some major changes and just flat out don't know what they are yet or when they'll be realized.
So this means people are going to get a free version of a game they don't like...that might keep them amused in the short-term, but dwindling numbers are only going to dwindle even more beyond that. What happens when this free game no longer has anyone playing? Or worse yet, what happens when these updates and changes take so long that it's no longer financially viable to even bother anymore?
I sincerely hope they intend to roll out something better, and soon. It always seems like such a waste for an MMO to die off completely. But I don't know. This just seems like far too unstable a plan.

Yeah especially considering the poster in question went on a flame bait campaign, baiting everyone he could then trying to get them banned and suspended lol.
FFXIV will never be up to par, it will not be able to content with the next batch of AAA MMO's coming out. All in all this has been good for some laughs, but I still can't bring myself to drop the money for the cost of the game, even if it is truly f2p right now (and it is more f2p than anything is or ever was hehe). I see a cash shop in FFXIV's future and not just with fluff items. Honestly, there's only so long they can continue to update and (potentially) improve the game without bringing in any money. But hey if it works for the people that are still paying and those that are still playing and actually enjoy it, then I guess that is all that matters. Personally, I severely doubt they will ever change it enough for me to find it enjoyable at all; this game will always be FAIL to me.
The announcement still cracks me up. I can't read through the whole thing without breaking into laughter.
Anyone know if the buddy keys are still valid? I had one from the launch from a friend and that is the only way I would try and see how they changed it. I know what the outcome of it would be, but the (hopefully) future game designer in me can't help but wonder at how "different" the game is now.
I may get flammed for this, but make this game FFXI-2 and i'll be damn happy. If it wasnt for FFXI being held back due to ps2 and not abel to release any kind of graphics updates , etc i would still be playing FFXI, oh and if they canned POL. None the less, i was expecting a FFXI-2, my fault for expecting so much (or to some so little) but for free ill follow along, there is no reason to say this game is dead and has no chance, what are you guys ms.cleo? If so you will have the same fate as her ( where is she now? exactly)

So they shouldn't have done it? Yes, considering the current situation of the game (which isn't going to change no matter how much people keep repeating it) this is the best course of action and was not set in stone that this would even happen. It's a good thing it did.

We got Another Ms.Cleo Folks.
Is that the best insult you could come up with? LOL. It's not that far off to think the game has a serious cash shop in it's future, that or it will get shut down. They can only go so long without any money coming in before they have to remedy it with a serious money making plan or admit defeat.
Ms.Cleo...HA! I prefer Devil's Advocate or Doomsayer hehe.
