Arche Age Sandbox Information // Ultima Online Influenced

ProfRedProfRed Member UncommonPosts: 3,495

Many people don't know much about this high budget sandbox MMORPG being made in Korea so here is a bunch of compiled info.

http://aaportal.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=51&Itemid=72⟨=en

http://aaportal.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=65&Itemid=83⟨=en

http://aaportal.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=57&Itemid=78⟨=en

Some people think it's a indie korean MMORPG, but that isn't true.  Jake Song is a huge player from Lineage and Aion, and the project already has a Chinese publishing contract worth 50-60 million making it the 2nd biggest Korean game export deal only behind Aion/NCSoft.

There is no news of an America publisher yet, but it will be here.  He has been doing exclusive American interviews so he definitely will bring it over here.

It uses the Cry 2 engine from Crysis with a full physics system and destructable terrain.  Huge open world with crafted houses, ships, and player settlements.  I think castles were mentioned as well.  The ship combat looks great already, and there is physics with players such as if you are riding a horse and the horse is killed the player will fall off, and everyone that dies falls based on their animation, their corpses can be kicked, and they can tumble down cliffs.  It is a skill based system with skill caps.  It is hugely based on Ultima Online systems, but with a robust PvE system built in to accompany it as well.  There was also hinting at being able to burn others houses down.

There is also a really cool map editing system in where I believe you can create, save, and sell maps and be a cartographer.

Lots of info actually out there.

This is the only new game that even has my attention these days.

Dont sandbox games not have quests?

Don't get my hopes up, my dreams will only be ultimately crushed. I will expect the worst possible scenario for this game if it comes to that D:

They can, yes, however, a true sandbox game will not have a pre-determined quest path for you to follow as you level. You will be out exploring the world and find an NPC with a quest from time to time etc.

Looks like a great upcoming Sandbox game, I for one can not wait to try it out. It seems to have lots of tools and features to use already combined with beautiful graphics. My only concern is the lack of larger scale warfare, only the highest of rigs will survive anything past 20v20.

Housing and being able to plant trees and farms looks very nice, would love to roleplay a farmer for a while!

I think many sandbox games uses their "sandboxness" as an excuse for lack of quests. Just because a game is open world and non linear does not mean there can't be just as many quests as a non-sandbox game.

You can have a number of smaller quest chains and even larger story quests put around the world, even if people do not necessarily have to follow them.

I think procedurally generated quests would also work well in sandbox games. They don't need to tie in to a strict storyline, but still allow people to have guided 'goals' with rewards on completion.

From what I've heard, the beta testers thought the game was utter crap and shouldn't be released but again they have a different audience so who knows how it plays out here although if it doesn't get big there it probably won't come to the west.

The game sounds like it will have fantastic features.  It would be awesome to be in that beta, if only to get a brief feel for what the game has to offer.

What stage of beta or release is it in, and in which countries?

Yea that's what I heard also.  There was like zero intrest in this game at G*Star and that makes me really worried.  I hope they can work on it some more and we can get a better feel for the game in 2011.

I'm reading the links and so far this looks really interesting. I think I'm going to be paying more attention to some of the smaller companies and overseas companies now.

  • StellosStellos Member UncommonPosts: 1,491

Definitely looks interesting.  I will follow this game.  I'm glad to see some interest in the sandbox style of MMOs, too bad it was produced by a US company.

Didnt read the articles.. I have followed the game a bit. Would definitely be a purchase if there is a PvE server.

Many indie dev's do use sandbox as an excuse for lack of content.  Though In order for it to be non linear AND have just as many quests the game world would need to gigantic, therefore I don't think a sandox game can have "just as many quests" as a themepark.

In the perfect sandbox I would do one long quest that took hours to complete for only a bit of gold and reputation as a reward.  The real reward would be exploring, meeting other players, cutting my way through many monsters, getting materials then perhaps going to craft an item or do other quests that you may have found along the way.

30 fetch or kill quests in a few hours that give some greens and a blue just doesn't give me any sense of accomplishment.  It also promotes rushing through what is supposed to be the best part of the game.

glad to see other people's interest popping up also ! I requested an ArcheAge Online subforum a while back and got a response from a MOD(staff)  that they would pass the idea on. Unfortunately it has been a few weeks, so if you want a subforum please repost in SITE SUGGESTIONS: ArcheAge Online.

Thank you. I have been following this game quietly for quite some time now. This game deserves a lot of attention, more than games like Tera is getting right now.

Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

UO had almost zero quests and people played for years. . content does not equal quests.  Many newer sandbox MMOs have used sandbox as an excuse for a lack of content period.

This sounds like an awesome game. I'm not a big fan of the Asian manga-looking graphics, but given all the cool sandbox features this title seems to sport, I'm definitely keeping an eye on it!

Yep i am surprised though that not a lot of people know about it.

This looks amazing!  Perhaps mmorpg should give them their own page?

Im wondering if this is my replacement for D&L?
