From what I've heard, the beta testers thought the game was utter crap and shouldn't be released but again they have a different audience so who knows how it plays out here although if it doesn't get big there it probably won't come to the west.
Yea that's what I heard also. There was like zero intrest in this game at G*Star and that makes me really worried. I hope they can work on it some more and we can get a better feel for the game in 2011.
I know Im a few posts late.
But there is one fact that almost no one can dispute; most of what comes out of the East in terms of MMOs are piece of shit grinders. Its why they have a hard time with Western markets.
And the fact that the Korean "grind-happy" audience doesnt like it, brings me hope.

Sandbox MMORPGs that are not very well-known but definitely worth a look:
Ryzom, Haven and Hearth, Xsyon, The Repopulation, UO private shards, Mortal Online, Darkfall 1 remakes (New Dawn or Rise of Agon), RPG MO, Project Gorgon, EQ: Sanctuary (custom server)
From what I've heard, the beta testers thought the game was utter crap and shouldn't be released but again they have a different audience so who knows how it plays out here although if it doesn't get big there it probably won't come to the west.
This is what I also heard from the korean CBTs, I don't know if it was due to bugs tho or just the overall game but I suspect the coding was bad or something like that.
I think many sandbox games uses their "sandboxness" as an excuse for lack of quests. Just because a game is open world and non linear does not mean there can't be just as many quests as a non-sandbox game.
You can have a number of smaller quest chains and even larger story quests put around the world, even if people do not necessarily have to follow them.
I think procedurally generated quests would also work well in sandbox games. They don't need to tie in to a strict storyline, but still allow people to have guided 'goals' with rewards on completion.
What you specifically want there is essentially a Themepark. You have a million of those already in the MMORPG genre.
A true Sanbdbox will not have a series of things to string you along, holding your hand.
But that doens't mean a game can't have quests or tasks.
If anything, allowing players to choose from a completely undguided path or one that has a story adds to what players can do. If one wants to use an actual sandbox analogy that's like saying "no" nothing in the sandbox but sand. No shovels, no pails no little "star fish shape thingies", nothing but sand so it can be TRUE Sandbox". And how many of us didn't at least use the little plastic shovel?
Allow more tools and toys so that players can actually do what they want. Or is it that once a player gets introduced to a quest then there is no feasible way that they can tear themselves away? Because I do tend to see this in games like lotro. Everybody running around doing quests and not realizng that they don't have to do every quest if they dont' want to. My sense is that Rift "might" have the same issue but we'll see. I'm actually getting excited by this Arch Age game.
First: Wow.. A game for the east gona beat and shame all western gamehouses.. Always tought that they would do it but now that its going to happen im still stunned that all we have are some indy game makers that are trying the same.
As for quest, snadbox and quest go perfectly hand in hand. the term themepark comes from sandbox games were sertain parts of game play were named themepark. they were quest that shown you around and gave some background lore on the game setting while never focing you to do them if you dint want to..
the last game doing it was SWG I think, a sandbox whit themeparks (jabba's, the rebbel adn imperial, those dudes on lok) they were "small" quest chains that you could do and get some neat stuff for.
the term thempark was taken for "modern" mmo's due to them being games build out of one big lojng chain of quest. there was nothing else. thus a themepark.

I was watching the youtube vid on house building, and it reminded me sooooooo much of Horizons. Horizons failed but there were so many good things about like the crafting that a lot of it shows up in other games.

Look promising. Too bad i don;t like anime artstyle so won't be playing this game
*sigh* That's why I still think that our gaming community doesn't deserve such a game..

Why because people have an opinion that differs than yours?
Personally, I cant stand anime either. SOme people hate the cartoon look of WoW, some people hate the dirty blade-runner look of EvE, some people hate the western look of Warhammer and Rift.
People tend to play games they like vs ones they dont.
Hell, what caught my eye with Rift was its western style of art-work vs the over the top stupidness mega weapon and armor anime, of say WoW.

really? cause some people don;t like certain art styles. I'm sorry I don't have the same likings as all the elite Korean players. I must suck. Thanks for pointing this out.

In the interview with Jake Song " He had emphasized that the closed beta test was mainly focused on experimenting with new features and getting feedback from testers through the official forum. However, there are still lots of forum posts from users with high expectations."
Judging by just that quote it's clear there isn't really a game to play yet. Anyone who is testing the "game" is going to be disappointed for sure.

Seems more like a stereotype, I saw no anime art style in any of the video's. I honestly could care less of the art syle anyway though as I prefer diversity in all it's forms. If the game is enjoyable bring it on.. The whole eastern-western thing is close minded to begin with, and I hope that nothing about this game changes in the western release beside language.

I don't like anime at all, but what exactly is anime about this game? The environment is beautiful. Most of the mobs I saw weren't really anime, and the races so far aren't over anime to me.
Jerlot65, you're not confusing this game with anime heaven TERA, right?
When I first heard of this I though it was only ship combat and went "meh" (not sure how I got that impression) I have just bee looking up stuff about the game for the past 2 hours an OMG.. this could actually be it!!

Just an annoying stereotype like zereelist said. You can see a beautiful world, made on CryEngine 2, a huge budget for a sandbox and amazing features. And you just saying won't play the game just for the "anime arstyle" that actually doesn't even exist on high scale?

You know, I don't blame him, I'm like that aswell. I dislike manga, and I can't play games or even read comicbooks that don't satisfy my taste in art.
Even more, I can't play games that have animations that are done incompletely or lazily. Non-fluid or extremely non-realistic character animations draw me away from games that have them.
BUT
I don't see any of that in ArcheAge. Animations look to be polished and fluid, and manga style is hardly prevalent, just go and watch many in-game videos that can be seen on youtube.
There's no naked women that run with their faces down to the ground (so that we can stare at their butts like some perverts) like in Lineage, and player characters run with full feet on the ground, not on their pinky toes, hardly touching the ground, like in every single Chinese/Korean MMORPG.
I had a chance to watch a bunch of the videos on youtube. For the most part the game appeared to be plain old boring. Three things looked interesting: the possibility of actually having a farm and not just a house for decorations, having a large cutter ship in your pocket to fight sea battles and sea monsters with and having a catapult in your pocket with six guys to move it around. I'm pretty sure the catapult would get boring quick. Everything else seemed pretty "meh". Wait, there's a fourth thing - your horse can kick people.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
This game definitely looks incredible. To me this is the only upcoming mmorpg that holds promise of being something unique. The only thing that scares me is the mention of 50v50 sieges...I would hate instances in a sandbox game, especially of PvP.
Waiting for: Archeage, Darkfall 2.0, and Planetside 2.

The 50v50 sieges were mentioned just for a refference to Lineage2 that was developed by J.Song,I highly doubt instanced PvP.People making fortresses/guild cities on the open world is already implemented.Although,It would be interesting to see some instanced PvE in such a sandbox MMO.

What exactly are the sandbox features of ths game? Can I build a city and concur territory like EVE, become a pure crafter like SWG? What is sandbox?
You can build cities and control/conquer territory on the original continent. There are 3 continents in the game, the two southern ones are like at war with each other and are where the starting zones are at and the northern one (the original continent) is mostly empty and full of unique and valuable resources for the players to fight over. Only the northern continent will be conquerable by players (as far as i know).
As for being a pure crafter, Jake Song said in an interview that it is impossible to progress through the game without engaging in combat, take that as you will.

With all the new info coming out in the last, what - 2 days, i cant but think this is all a big hoax :P
Ive read interviews with this Mr Song and CB1 and CB2 info i guess im just use to hearing hype 2 years before any beta.
