No, I love some games, DA:O, KoToR, BG, Legend of Dragoon, LoTRo, and Gears to name a few. So nope, I can be satisfied, I just prefer a game, much like a woman, to have depth. If there is nothing to talk about when it is over other than the sweaty bits then it's not worth my time.
I'm a huge fan of MMOs, and I love to cheer them on. Nothing beats playing a new MMO that you love. With that said, this game just looks to be a disappointment despite the BioWare/LucasArts tags. The visuals have no style whatsoever. The combat looks dull, and will likely have huge issues with balance. The cover system looks like a horrible implementation.
WIth that said, I do hope it turns out good, but I see in SWTOR that makes me think it'll have a chance.
I had a dream about playing this game in some beta they were having and this is what I remembered from my dream.
Basically....bluntly.....frankly.....the game is boring. It's sleep inducing. It's a generic sci-fi game at best. The only thing star wars about it was my twi'lek toon. No familiar SW sounds, and maybe a few dashes of traditional SW musical scores here and there. The game as it is right now is Tabula Rasa. Now details....
- UI is clumsy with no customization available. Only 9 hotkey slots, I was out of room at level 10 and had to start removing my heals (items and an ability ) from the bar to make room for combat stuff.
- Character movement and animations are pretty bad. My female twi'lek ran like she was carrying buckets of water and trying not to spill it.
- The whole "every class has a different path" thing is partially bullshit. Both smuggler and trooper start on Ord Mantel and have to progress through the same chain of quest besides their class specific. When done with Mantel ( around level 10) they are both sent to Coruscaunt. Only then do their paths venture away.
- Leveling is extremely slow. It took me 5 days to hit level 10 putting in maybe an hour or 2 each day. I never made it past level 10 nor did I leave Ord Mantel. Got tired of the game.
- The game world looks pretty good, they were correct in saying you can go anywhere you can physically see. Performance however is piss poor, the game seems to be using the alpha client still....lots of long debugging and loading prompts on startup.
- I played as Smuggler. The class is more OP than a fully buffed TKM stacker in stun resist comp. The cover system is very cheesy, its basically a toggleable immunity buff. Your damage taken is reduced by like 90% and you're attacks while in cover are buffed and also OP in general. I never died, not once. Used a heal maybe once.
- The companion system is what we all thought.....clever wording for pets. The AI is crappy just like pets in any other mmo. Nothing to see here.
- There really are no choices in dialogue. Every response leads to the same outcome and same quest. You'll get some wise cracks and that's about it. Options that gave light or dark side points were few and far between. Dosent matter what you say if no points are on the line.
But, it was just a dream.
You know, just about everyone else I have read that had dreamed about this game has said quite the opposite. Maybe your dreaming about the wrong game and this dream is not for you?
I'm sure this game will open HUGE as its star wars/bioware, but as soon as people find out there is NOTHING special at all in here. They will leave in droves. Espicaly as its P2P. Give it a few months and this game will be lucky to have 100k subs. Oh and yes I AM a HUGE Star Wars fan and not in the least intrested in this game. I would rather play on one of the SWG eumlators

- UI is clumsy with no customization available. Only 9 hotkey slots, I was out of room at level 10 and had to start removing my heals (items and an ability ) from the bar to make room for combat stuff. They have already stated that the UI seen is not the one that will be in the final game.
- Character movement and animations are pretty bad. My female twi'lek ran like she was carrying buckets of water and trying not to spill it. They have already improved animations from earlier builds as we have seen from the most recent videos.
I do not understand your logic here, so what if they share the same chain quest if they have have their own class specific and branch off after Coruscaunt. That constitutes a different path to me.
- Leveling is extremely slow. It took me 5 days to hit level 10 putting in maybe an hour or 2 each day. I never made it past level 10 nor did I leave Ord Mantel. Got tired of the game. Wow a game where I can't reach level cap in a couple of hours.
- The game world looks pretty good, they were correct in saying you can go anywhere you can physically see. Performance however is piss poor, the game seems to be using the alpha client still....lots of long debugging and loading prompts on startup. You know beta clients run extra processes for debugging right? That is why they are often slow and that is what closed Beta is for.
No game is perfectly balanced, and Beta is for testing stuff like this and making adjustments.
- The companion system is what we all thought.....clever wording for pets. The AI is crappy just like pets in any other mmo. Nothing to see here. See above.
- There really are no choices in dialogue. Every response leads to the same outcome and same quest. You'll get some wise cracks and that's about it. Options that gave light or dark side points were few and far between. Dosent matter what you say if no points are on the line. Ill have to take your word on this since I have not played the game myself, but it goes against what we saw from one of the dev videos.
So far the biggst hype Bioware can offer us is voice overs and quests that can lead in a few directions. That is not enough to get me excited, not in the least.
<snip>
For me this is exactly why I think SWTOR may be a great succes.
Past big MMOs all seemed to be trying to revolutionise the genre, with promises being thrown around by screaming devs who were so enthusiastic about their amazing game that would change the way we played MMOs.
And in the end, after all the catchphrases had run out, we ended up with more or less the same old thing with some slight changes and a buggy release.
Bioware on the other hand is mostly promising just one thing. Voice overs and storyline. And seeing the other games they've made that is something I believe they can deliver. Unlike all those other MMOs who had a single succes in their past ( DAoC for WAR, Anarchy for AoC, EQ for Vanguard etc. ) and were now promising to deliver not just on one aspect of their MMO but to deliver on all aspects of their MMO.
Which is why I don't think SWTOR will disappoint. Bioware is not promising to change everything. They're only promising to add storyline. For the rest they mostly seem to be promising the standard MMO experience. So at worst we'll get the same old thing with some slight changes ( storyline ), which is exactly as promised. And at best, who knows? We may be surprised.
We are the bunny. Resistance is futile. ''/\/\'''''/\/\''''''/\/\ ( o.o) ( o.o) ( o.o) (")("),,(")("),(")(")

Personally, I think SW:ToR might be a good game. The only problem is that it's too much hyped just because it has the BioWare/LucasArt tag and uses the Star Wars IP. My guess is a lot of ppl will be disappointed because of that over-hyped idea of BioWare developing it. An other thing that might be a reason for the hype is the fact that there's so much secrecy around ToR. PPL don't know what to expect and let their fantasy fill in the huge gaps of that what's not revealed (yet).
I'm no Star Wars fan myself, so I won't play ToR at all, but I really hope it'll live up the expectations of the hype it has.
While some of the things I've heard about the game makes me think it might not be what I'm looking for in an MMO (still going to do the free trial to see for myself) but with the name of Bioware behind it, based on Star Wars IP, I have trouble seeing it being a disaster.
I also think the game will be big and a decent success, thats not wishful thinking on my part either, it's because the game is aimed at the KotOR fans, SW fans and those who enjoy the features of the game their designing, not the whiners who want to race to max level in a couple of hours, not the whiners who are only interested in one aspect of the game being designed and certainly not for those who will complain about imbalance (once released) purely because they can't play the game.
BioWare+Star Wars+Knights of the Old Republic theme+MMO = damn good chance of success.
It's timing is a disaster for me, had it released a year ago or two years from now I could see myself playing it. But Rift came out first and is quite entertaining, then GW2 is on the horizon which I'm excited for and Diablo 3 will be out next year and I'll be stuffed to the brim with games.
A single MMO can take up all your time, two will for sure take up all you time, and two plus an onlin hack'n'slash mean that I will die from sleep depravation.
I don't believe this will be a disaster at all so I don't agree with OP. Glad that there will be other things for you to go play but I along with millions of other Bioware/Star Wars fans will be enjoying ourselves on SWTOR for a long time.
Pretty tired of reading negative posts from people that really have no idea how this game is going to turn out. The doomsayers should keep their opinions to themselves until actual gametime has been logged. If you don't feel like this game is for you then find something else and go on that game forum and plug the hell out of it and keep your negativity away from the rest of us looking forward to this one.
lets say this, there first day of sales will recoup almost everything. I bet 2-3million buy the game. and they maintain atleast 1million subscribers the first 2 months.
Take the one we know about originally we would be seeing ranged tanks. Something very different possible because of the ranged gamepaly. Only we see know the two ranged tank classes have instead been turned into ranged DPS or healer classes. They may still have some tanking ability but the focus has been changed. This revolutionary idea has been thrown aside cause it didn't work in PvP. People were ignoring the ranged tanks cause they weren't a threat and rather foolish to target them so from what has been said we will likely see a WAR guard option employed for them.
Now none of this is really a problem as anyone that plays MMO knows things change in testing. But when two of the bigger names leave to take up very indie projects (c ommunity rep Sean and Exec Gordon Walton) you have to wonder do they know something we don't? Have EA become too much like SOE taking too much of a direct hand forcing changes that aren't good for the game. And rather than release a game like this which the two staff mentioned think is going to flop they have left before that happens?
First of all i dont know where you are getting this idea that they have basically gotten rid of the range tanking. The trooper and BH both have an entire advanced class dedicated to tanking. For the BH(and likely the trooper) its other advanced class is for the dps and healing trees. And the reason the healing was added wasn't because people weren't picking the tank ac but because in testing they were having trouble getting people to pick healers.
Secondly, Sean Dahlberg left to take a higher postion at another company because he had an opportunity to advance his career in a direction he wanted(which is pretty common thing for people to do) and Gordon Walton left to take what is likely a higher paying job in which he gets to work with a really good friend of his. Gordon even went onto the tor forum to leave a message to try and stop these unfounded conspiracies that its a sign the game is doomed.
The game hasn't even gone into beta yet and from the looks of it won't be released for retail for quite a few more years. Regardless of what you heard or what's been said they have proven this already so don't place bets that something will happen even this year.
The worse thing that they could of done was over publicize this game for years now. Many people including me don't want to hear any more hype on this title, it's time for them to show their goods with at least an open beta, something....anything at this point. Any other info they keep pumping out is boring now, who gives a sh!t, show us something by now or shut the hell up.
As long as they don't follow in the footsteps of SOE and bring out the giant club of nerfing and ruin the game like SWG was destroyed it has a chance. But again we know NOTHING because no one has had a chance to play it and see for themselves.
I'll tell you this much......going off some past games Bioware put out my hopes are not that high for SWToR. Dragon Age was not all that great neither is Dragon Age 2. If this is the new quality of Bioware then be skeptical of SWToR, nuff said.

Well the beta has been going on for over 6 months now and apparently according to the official statements from EA and Bioware it's due to come out this year. Proof to the contrary would be nice though so your end of the arguement has weight

There is a nice long thread on all the info we have so far. Just head on over to swtor.com and look for the information gathered so far thread in the general discussion thread. Easy enough to find considering it's stickied

I won't comment on SWG becuase i got in after the NGE and such however with pax West last year people have had a chance to play it.

It's fine to be skeptical. I think it's actually a good thing
Might want to read up a bit more as some of what you said is kinda in direct contrast to known and linkable info.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

I love it when people comment on things they clearly know nothing about. This game has been in Closed Beta since last summer.
That said, he loves it not as an MMORPG, He says its rails are tight, it is not a flexible system. He only plays with other people because he wants to, not because he has to. He said, so far, you could solo beginning to end (he has not played through the entire content, obviously). Again, he really loves it, but if people were hoping for a deep, non wow MMO, he claims they will be very disappointed. To him, it is just what BW is good at--in depth story, well told, and enjoyable.
I am still excited about it. Sure, I wish it had some SWG elements, but at the same time, I like WoW too. ;-)
I have the distinct feeling that this game is going to blow away all the competition... but then again, I am a huge Bioware fan and I tend to love all their games. Nothing I have seen or read about this game leads me to think otherwise, but only time will tell.
Wait till release then we will see if it will be a disaster, it always shows right there and then.
I remember Warhammer was really successful in the first month and so was FF 14 but oh wait xD. Who could foresee those disasters.
Btw please tell me which MMO's are graphical marvels and have such a huge success that it would be relevant? If the graphics would be any indications for $$$ they would have done so.
Combat looks dull, pff this kind of combat exist longer than you my friend, guess what, it is successful.
How can you already say that it will have huge balance issues? Every damn MMO has balance issues. If you want balance play Tetris online.

I think it will be Disaster and Disappointment. However, I will give a beta or free-trial a go otherwise I'm staying away.

There is always somewhat of a problem with balance, but any game with mirrored classes is most likely not going to have that issue.
