My worry is the combat. I just can't... I can't do this anymore. I can't do this auto-attack boring swing a swird, poke a stick sandwhich gameplay.
In the latest flashpoint video the graphics sure looks good.. Visually the fidelity is better than Guild Wars 2, which is actually much more close to Guild Wars 1 than anyone realise. GW2 just have good art designers.
But the combat in this game reminds me of Warhammer.. the animations look clunky. controls dont seem tight. They say they wanted to make this feel action packed, but I see more of that WoW-Mode combat. And there is nothing wrong with it, but I cant anymore.
I've played these games like this since DAOC.. I cant make myself play these games for this crappy combat. I always endured it, even though I hated it in all the games, because its slow, boring, you dont feel in control, you dont look cool.
I'm going to need some more real time. Not that weird stuff Conan pulled out, but something like TERA.
Guild Wars 2 does not count. It has no sub and it's a completely different game cathering to a different marked. that game won't be a threat to anyone. they are just doing their thing.
I just wish SWTOR would redo its combat. make it like Jedi Knight. That game actually felt awesome to wield a lightsaber. The combat in SWTOR just looks painful... I dont want to look at my hotkeys to go down on a cooldown, I want to control my character, use my skills and be in control.
Ah...there's no auto attack in TOR
The animation is bad like Warhammer? did u check Rift out? that's Warhammer level animation
not saying TOR has outstanding animation but it's definitely not Warhammer bad
They removed the auto-attack but it looks, like the slug fest of auto-attack games? you dont even need to really face your opponent or hit them.
It's not SWTORs fault. I just can't do this anymore. I am done. The MMORPGs of the past killed me. I don't have the patience to start another game from level 1 and go through thousands hours worth of unexciting combat. Imagine if the game had a combat system like Mass Effect 2?
If you used force powers like that, went into cover like in Mass Effect 2... if mass effect 2 had lightsabers they would probably slice through things like butter. It might even play like Ninja Gaiden. wauw.
If you want action combat, then you should follow action games or MMOFPSes or consoles. I'm not sure why you would even bother to complain about MMORPG combat that is typical of MMORPGs when there are plenty of games and genres out there that meet this criteria. It's like MMO gamers going to FPS boards and complaining about the combat being too fast paced and too twitchy and that would be just as pointless.
I'm a huge fan of MMOs, and I love to cheer them on. Nothing beats playing a new MMO that you love. With that said, this game just looks to be a disappointment despite the BioWare/LucasArts tags. The visuals have no style whatsoever. The combat looks dull, and will likely have huge issues with balance. The cover system looks like a horrible implementation.
WIth that said, I do hope it turns out good, but I see in SWTOR that makes me think it'll have a chance.
A disaster? No. A 'WoW killer'? Also no. I think that the game will be an overall success, but I don't see anything that will make it the new top dog by any stretch. Aside from a ton of story, there is nothing innovative at all. It has more VO than other MMO's, but that isn't groundbreaking, as video games in general have had VO for about 20 years now. The holy trinity style is obviously nothing new or special. Some will cite the cover system, but honestly, LoS'ing has been in MMO's since the beginning, and incorporating it into gameplay really isn't that edgy. Most of the game is on-rails, which will turn some players off. Space and housing are afterthoughts, implemented in an "SWG-lite" fashion to try and appeal to the SWG players who enjoyed those aspects. Like WoW, it lacks versatility in character customization and wearables, the only notable difference between characters of the same class who've looted the same gear will be species. The outfits, armor, structures, and droids are styled to look like older versions of their Star Wars movie variations, but they actually just look clunky and unappealing. It also has the usual, craptastic mouse-over control scheme.
In other words, it is a standard issue MMO, like WoW, and every game that has since copied WoW in the hopes of achieving what Blizzard has. It is crystal clear that the game is a take-no-chances business investment, and that EA and BW plan to bank on the draw of the Star Wars license. If this game did not have such a popular IP, no one would give it the time of day. The Star Wars IP, backed by BW's rep from its success with RPG's and the KoTOR franchise, is enough for the game to turn a profit. There's a good chance that this game will sell 1.5-2 million copies in its 1st year, and will likley hold 400-800k subscribers. That is a success.
The more innovative competition this year will keep it from being a blockbuster, however, as GW2, Rift, and others will have something somewhat different, or at least less expensive, to offer than the same decade-old blueprint used to build TOR. The game may hit over a million subs at launch, but once the new-ness wears off and other hot titles are released, players will migrate away. The game will still hold a few hundred thousand subs for years. I mean hell, SWG was all but destroyed by a half-assed crash grab and even worse PR from SOE (yep, that suckerpunch is for you, Dallas Dickenson), yet it still lives on more than 5 years later. That's the power of the Star Wars IP, and it will likely bring in money for EA even moreso than it has for Sony.
For those who will call me a Pre-CU whiner, yes, I played SWG Pre-CU...for about a week. It was awful, and I don't see why anyone would ask for that crock of sh*t to be repeated by another company. Even SWG today is still better than at any time before the combat upgrade, period.

Because it hasn't evolved at all. They could add a lot more complexity and variety to the combat than the current systems have, they just get lazy and just copy and paste.

This is precisely the problem with the genre today. Ever since WoW attracted millions of players with its bland, generic combat system, cookie-cutter professions, "must-have" templates, simplified holy trinity group roles, poor controls, and mouse-on-treadmill endgame, the genre has stagnated. The only major company to really move outside this formula was, suprisingly, SOE with DCUO. Unfortunately, while the combat system is innovative for an MMO, everything else that makes a game playable was neglected, and Sony released yet another rushed, buggy, hackable game with little content to keep players interested.
EA and BW, like most other major companies over the last few years, have decided to play it safe by copying what has worked for Blizzard, adding in a few tchotchkies, and relying on the strength of the Star Wars IP and a marketing blitz to sell boxes. This game is not about advancing the genre, or even making a great Star Wars MMO. It's solely about profit margins. They've stuck with the proven method that is virtually guaranteed to make an overall profit. Perhaps if they'd tried to do something innovative, they may have actually challenged Blizzard, but they didn't. I could hope that enough people would recognize this prior to launch, and pass on the game, which would force EA/BW to listen to the market and make necessary changes or lose millions, but some people out there just don't have the intellectual capacitty to see anything past "OMG!!! Star Warz and BW!!! Uber force powerz and litesaberz!!!! I wantz it now!!!"
Eventually, a game company will finally get it and build a complex, persistant standard game with multiplayer, and continually add large DLC (think GW model for a standard, open-world PC/console game) with great graphics and a superior combat system. This will force MMO companies to innovate and evolve, or fall to extinction. I've got my fingers crossed.

Or maybe people just like Eq/WoW style combat? and the thought prossese that goes behind playing games like WoW and EQ.
What you are saying holds no interest for me at the moment. Games like WoW and TOR are complex but you can't see past the "OMG WOW CLONE" crap.
Naw it wont be a disaster. Its going to fall in line with most of the other MMO's thats been released in the past few years. I dont expect a long life, its just going to be another MMO to play for a few months then people will be moving on to the next one. 6 months after release few people will care about TOR. MMO's these days just are not made to last anymore. Their made to gather a quick buck and fade into oblivion.

At this point I just don't know what to think about this game. There are things I really like about it, and I was following its development before It had a known IP or name; I have spent more time on swtor than most MMO's I actually own. Years ago I told people I would buy any Bioware game, no info needed. That, however, was before Dragon Age and friends tried to rape my wallet with DLC, meaningless expansions, and box price increases (so much for PC being cheaper than PS3 and Xbox). I get the feeling that EA has learned the way of the sparkle pony well.
The gameplay is starting to concern me also. Just watching the Taral V flashpoint video made me cringe. That sad little yoda wannabe looked like something out of the browser star wars game my kid plays. I wasn't a big fan of the idea that you have to roll on conversation responses like loot either, that seems to kick thier whole 'story' concept in the teeth if I can't even control my own character's responses.
I don't think it will be a financial disaster or anything for the devs, but lets jut say I don't think it will be taking up as much of my free time as I was afraid it would.
Jusrt a small minor correction on the dialog choices
You can still pick how your character responds ala ME, it's just that roll decides who says their line.
As for the personal story, the one whose personal story is being run will always take priority over anything that will affect the story, other people pick up wise crack lines or the like.
All the dialog wheel does is mix things up in an attempt to create a dynamic story. So that way the story is kind of unpredictable as it can change depending on what people pick.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
- World quests that aren't shared by both factions.
- Dialogues with cutscenes and voices for all npc's and most importantly choices you can make that change future events
- A cover system for two classes smuggler and Imperial Agent. And even if your class doesn't use the cover system, you still can hide behind stuff and you won't take damage.
- Melee synchronized combat were you can parry several enemies.
- Interactive objects in some parts of the world, which you can use to blow up enemies, etc.
- A complex crafting system.
- Companions that have their own story and which you can do RPG stuff like romancing or killing them, etc.
- A ship that is basically you HUB to things in the game, like traveling the galaxy, acessing space combat mini-game, crafting table, storage, etc.
And theres more that wasn't announced yet, like probably some kind of RvR (hinted), other mini-games like pazaak, sabaac and probably swoop racing.
But yes, this game is totally a WoW-clone... no doubt about it.
I have to stand with Slpr on this. From what we have seen and been told about SWTOR it is absolutely nothing like WOW and I wish people would stop saying it is.

Hard to not think that when the developers have literally come out and said that 'any company that doesn't emulate WoW with their new mmo is failing.'
It's quite hilarious, however, to see people falling for the same crap over and over again. Every new MMO is supposed to be 'zomg wow killar! BUT NOTHING LIKE WOW!" and yet turns out to be wrong on both counts as other companies furiously try to take a bite of Blizzard's success without apparently realizing that people are bored of WoW for a reason, and people leaving WoW don't want another WoW.
Most of the features in that long list a few posts up are directly adapted from things WoW already does. My guess is, the ones which aren't, will not make it into the final cut.

There are a lot of differences between wow and ToR, I will not rush to defend bioware post DA2 but I will at least list the differences.
WoW allows for skill trees where you can spec out your classes anyway you want, yet the game play forces you to choose certain trees if you want to be an effective raider.
A world filled with lots of zones, crafting regents, and monsters you can fight alone or with a group.
Six man and raid dungeon instances.
A large bag of classes.
Fishing.
ToR allows people to spec out their classes in two ways, both so far seem to have merrit. Allowing for diversity of groups.
Max group size seems to be four man, so either it is easier than WoW or it will take more skill than WoW.
four classes to a side, which ends up more like eight once you spec out fully. Rogue healing from being a rock was ammusing to me, and somehow seemed right.
Npc companions that can be sent to harvest object x while you fight, no more "Gah you damn noob, you stole the resource I was fighting for." moments.
Offline quests for your npcs.
Mounted combat in the form of old school rogue squadron space battles.
Equipment for your ship.
Player houseing in the form of said ship.
Random rolls decerning who talks in group quests, oh and talking ingeneral.
I have to stand with Slpr on this. From what we have seen and been told about SWTOR it is absolutely nothing like WOW and I wish people would stop saying it is.

They never said they were going to emulate WoW! What they said was that they were looking at WoW for a quality standard in therms polish, content, etc. But as usual people like to spread the bad word "zomg they said they were making a WoW-clone"... err.

Not sure if it has been posted or mentioned but a former EA employeee released some bad news.
EALouse is his name and goes on to say he feels the game is not very good and they are banking solely on the voice acting as it's best selling point. He says they are proud of their 20gb sound file, but nothing else is worth mentioning.
To be honest,it might sound like sour grapes from a former employee, but this is EXACTLY the same feel i had of this game, since this is all we really hear mentioned.
He says the game is carrying a 300 million dollar budget ,not something EA wants let out,it sets very high expectations that pobably can't be met.
Word is EA has moved many of it's outside employees onto this game, they are rushing to get it out.If their really is a 300 mil budget that would be obviously growing larger by the day, they really are going to go in panic mode.Good to know they have near 1.5 million beta apps or so they say.
My take and i really do beleive this...Bioware does not understand MMO and will deliver a decent single player experience. They will add in voice acting and single story lines, again that should be proof enough they don't understand mmo,why not grouped story lines?Do not expect Mass Effect type graphics.
Bioware is used to making single player games over a 1-2 year span,i believe they "thought" grabbing the HERO engine would allow them to make a mmo in the same time frame.I am not expecting a MMO experience, for many that is ok,i am just saying.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

@Wizardry: sorry, mate, but the fact that a blogger voices statements that fit closely to your perception of a game, doesn't make them automatically true, you know?
Parts of his report were already debunked, either by himself stating that he spoke too rashly and out of spite or by others who were working at BW that he was wrong on a number of accounts. Among them the 300 million dollar quote was stated in an official conference meeting to be ridiculously wrong. 100 million dollars is more like it.
The fact that he stated that SWTOR would be the biggest fail the industry had ever seen in itself was already proof of his real intent, namely to damage the employer he was fired by. Mixing highly biased speculating with his comments showed it for the emotional rant and rumor/hate mongering it was, unless he suddenly had become psychic and knew the future with the 100% certainty of a prophet, of course.
edit: anyway, not that my corrections upon your post really matter. I noticed that you never return to your former posts, you didn't when you copied the 2009 TOR footage in the graphics-thread claiming it was from the 2011 PAX, so I expect it won't be different this time with this thread.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

Thanks for the clarification Whilan.
Space WOW no thx !!!
Yep, Space WoW no doubt!
Because WoW have:
- 8 classes each one with their own story.
We shall see jedi, we shall see!
I have to stand with Slpr on this. From what we have seen and been told about SWTOR it is absolutely nothing like WOW and I wish people would stop saying it is.
Retired: EVE, SWG, STO, EQ2, Ryzom, AO, LotRO, FFXI
Currently Awaiting: SWTOR, TSW, ArcheAge
The funny thing is, they didn't actually say emulate wow, people just took it that way.

They never said they were going to emulate WoW! What they said was that they were looking at WoW for a quality standard in therms polish, content, etc. But as usual people like to spread the bad word "zomg they said they were making a WoW-clone"... err.
The haters here will take the statement out of context , anyone with a brain knows what they were saying and their approach is good enough for me.

Sorcery must persist, the future is the Citadel
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
yeah no.
The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
This game really needs to come out while the hype is high before we all burn out commenting on its potential quality... Then we will know.
