Probably not worth much but as a former game designer (retired) I attended many conventions, including those with authors of books. One of the factors in the 'meet the author' sessions was a common thread among some of the audience (like a forum?). This was, 'why isn't this or that more realistic?". It should be 'that or this way instead'. Most authors who wrote the books were polite and diplomatic. One I remember got annoyed and told his questioner (r u listening OP?) he was sorry he didn't get it right and that if the questioner had been there to supervise his writing then he was sure it would have been a better book.
He went on to say that creation of a "magic" system, or psuedo-science or Fictional history was not a matter of realism but imagination. Imagination and it's product are the proprietary rights of the author. The reader has an absolute right to disagree and can deny his support or money to the work if he wants. However there is no reason to attempt to 'revise' something that the creator of the work has done simply to satisfy a few peoples' complaints.
There are perfectly valid reasons that there is a similarity between SW movies and SWtOR material. If there wasn't, then it would not generate the type of interest needed to make a profit and continue in business. No profit no game - that simple. A time line of development of a FICTIONAL history is whatever the author wants it to be. This real universe may not be what I think of as 'rational' or what I think it ought to be but I believe I will not attack the Creator on his imaginative creation that includes me being here. I actually hope to remain here regardless and as long as possible.
It should also be noted that Star Wars takes place in the Star Wars Universe, which has different rules and laws than our universe. Lucas has actually addressed this issue several times and points out that in his universe there IS sound in space which is why you can hear the lazers firing and the ships blowing up
When does Star Wars: The Old Republic take place in relation to the movies?
Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place more than 3,500 years before the rise of Darth Vader
So, with that in mind, please explain why this entire universe has been basically stagnant for 3500 years? Star Destroyer like ships, Jedi with Lightsabers, The Sith, The Jedi and so on.
What was the Earth like 3500 years ago for comparison?
That bothers me too, they're trying to desperately shoe horn in iconic movie images, despite the fact that they have no place in this timeline. It's a shameless lazy cash in, like the rest of the game.
In Star Wars they have been space travelling for over 40,000 years and most likely using blasters and computer for over 100,000 years so you aren't going to see that much of a different in space ship designs armor designs and weapon designs. There might be differents under the hood but you are not going to see them in the movies or games.

Actually, in the movies you see quite a lot of difference and technical advancement in the 6 movies alone. Don't try to write it off, they're trying to make a movie look alike game even though the ships and prototypes they were using then sure as hell weren't the same ones during movie time.

Correct, Episodes 1, 2 and 3 clearly demonstrate more teechnical advancements than 4,5, 6. You have proven your point thoroughly.
You guys can whine and cry all you want, it doesn't change the fact that the KOTOR games were fucking amazing.

Even though it is illogical in your eyes, it is based on real Star Wars canon that has already been covered by official comic books and stuff. Your argument is invalid. /thread
Personally I'd like to see a single player RPG that takes place during the Mandalorian Wars. The endgame could be the planet-shattering battle for Malachor V against Mandalore the Ultimate. Of course you would be Revan AGAIN but I don't see why this is a problem because he is just that cool. Even better is that you'll be able to play as Revan during his rise to power and not after he lost his identity and most of his strength.
Playing through KOTOR 1, I feel like I've missed 95% of the real action.

Er, Kotor 1 was really good. I never bothered to finish kotor 2, fking amazing isn't the word I would use. And these games hardly resemble the art of the kotor games, they should have just made it based around the clone wars, cause thats exactly what it looks like. I guess every bounty hunter ever had ancient armor and a jetpack, derp derp!
Actually technology changed alot. While ships may have similar looks to them the actual engine and speed they travel probably wont be close to what ships can go in han solo's time. Lets keep in mind also that the falcon is like a 500 year old ship when han gets his hands on it.
The ship isnt exactly new even in star wars a new hope time.
Also we haent even seen armor for a trooper yet. Other then the pictures they have as placeholders we have no clue what end game trooper armor will look like.
Also keep in mind since u are using blasters and light sabers in one time period as well as a new hope that the armor will have similar capabilities. Id guess a new hopes armor has more blaster resistant and blasters are a bit more powerful.
That said all technology hits a snag at some point in time. From the birth of jesus until 1940s the biggest change was from bows and arrows to gatlin guns. Since 1940s while guns are more efficent and missles are smarter there isnt really much change in the technology of the weapons.
Nuclear weaposn while smaller then in 1940 is still the epitomy of weapons in our world. Plus lets be honest once a culture hits a sttate where they have pretty much become the be all end all of technology the growth changes.
Plus this is a game people. Are u kidding me sine when does how fast a race of people move in development of tech in our world affect a completly fictitious universe.
I have read fantasy books where technological growth and even racial evolution took millions of years wheras human evoloution has take a realtive short time period . So just because technology in our universe or world moves pretty ffast doesnt mean it would in another universe or time period. Just look at the evoloution of animals
They each have there own rate of evolution and growth same with technology. Shortly before kotor jedi had power packs on the light sabers now of course in tor the power packs are self contained that said technology has evolved some in tor to new hope just not as fast as our world has at this time.
That said human kind hasnt reached the epitomy ot technology either and despite improvements to tech since 1940 is in a stall pattern as well.

So, if TOR had neither Jedi and Sith nor lightsabers (?!) you would have consented. And it bothers you that TOR's ships look like Star Destroyers, because this is indeed a very important aspect in TOR's gameplay and experience overall. Give me a break! KotOR and TOR are based on a series of graphic novels, quite popular ones which existed even BEFORE KotOR. Bioware is neither the CREATOR nor the PROPRIETOR of the Star Wars lore and world presented in these novels. They are just sticking to them as they should and are materializing an iconic SW universe and damn right they do so.
A MMO developed for 5+ years with an astronomical budget and a development team counting in hundreds is a "shameless lazy cash in"? You're looking at the wrong game. Maybe you should check on Cryptic and Star Trek Online, the epitomy of "shameless lazy cash in".

a) it is FICTION.
b) Human civilization only has rapid progress in the last few hundred years. Humans living in 1000AD essentially lived no differently than those in 0 AD or 1000 BC. So it is entirely possible to have no significnat progress in thousands of years.

QFT. Some people's hatred for this game has made them lose touch with reality. No objective person who has looked at everything that has been released about this game could say this was just a lazy cash in. If that was the case, the game would have been released over a year ago with half the budget.

Really? I would have thought that they would spend as little as possible and throw it out the door ASAP if they were looking to be lazy & cash in. Meh, i guess im not as smart as others.

The technology changed a little bit over those 3500 years with the Executor class Star Dreadnaught, Death Star 1-2 and the Suncrusher
