You want to talk reality? There are civilizations here on this very planet whose technology and way of life have not changed in 2000 years. It really is not that odd that there are not glaring differences in the two time periods.
Fact: SWTOR plays in a very different timeframe to allow for more freedom to it's background and story.
Fact: SWTOR still needs to look and feel like Starwars as much as possible while being different in detail to get the right vibe and conform to people's expectations.
Trying to make sense of it in a temporally acurate way or condemning it for the discrepancies which you are bound to come across when trying to do so, is kind of an effort in futility in my eyes.
No offense, but why then are you even posting?
It baffles me why, when someone tries to start a lore discussion, so many come in and say they don't care. If you don't care then don't post and let those who like to discuss lore have their fun.
I managed to not post for 7 pages (7 pages in the way my preferences are set up), for me this is a huge achievement. V_V
Also not caring about a particular subject AND explaining why also is a valid and postworthy opinion.
But I wont try to prevent others from endulging themselves, please post along bro.
I shall now attempt to not post for the coming 10 pages!
Apart from the logical answer of "It's a fantasy universe", which really is all that need apply here, but doesn't seem to be enough...
In the lore, the Republic goes through a series of wars after the one in TOR's timeperiod, finally resulting in a "dark age" about two thousand years after TOR in which there is a technological recession due to war with the Sith and a series of catastrophes.
TADA!
Star Wars has always tried to put the past forward as something mysterious and powerful, not unlike many other epics. Argueing why fictional settings and themes exist because they are not in our own universe is pretty ridiculous. I don't see it happen on all forums of all the fantasy and all sci fi games here either, although there are plenty of arguments no doubt.
This was all that needed to be said from the beginning. This is a perfectly acceptable answer to OP's question. Now the only question is what are the canon sources that discuss this part of the story?
+ The Knight Errant series of comics that take place in this age (still ongoing).
Basically the galaxy was fractured, various dark lords are duking it out, at the same time plagues hit etc, the holonet was lost on many planets and civilization decayed.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
There is nothing even remotely troll-like about the OP. I think expecting there to be huge differences over a period of 3500 years is entirely reasonable. In fact, it is absolutely ridiculous to argue that the many advanced societies of the Star Wars universe would somehow remain stagnant in both technology advancement and style.
Did the scientists collectively decide to stop doing science? Did weapons manufacturers decide that they weren't going to make new products? Starship designers felt like the same models every year was a good business plan? Did culture stop changing on its own? I guess consumers everywhere were happy with the current slate of products and would refuse to buy any products that had any hints of stylistic changes or technological improvements?
Sure, the human bronze age lasted a really long time. That's not even a remotely fair comparison, since technology breeds further technological advancements. With the invention of faster and better computers comes the capability to invent faster and better computers. And so on.
Over 3500 years, a lot would have changed. How can anyone deny that? "Because it's a Sci Fi series," isn't a good enough answer. When watching movies and reading stories, there are certain aspects of the fictional reality that are assumed to be based in actual reality, laws of physics, human nature, things that aren't subject to change without changing entire atmosphere, genre, believability, and target audience of the movies. In short, what was once a great storyline is ruined by the insanity of a 3500 year period in the storyline where so incredibly little changes. This is bad writing at it's worse: taking something great and making it terrible.
I'm sure someone will want to pick out one or two sentences in this post and make some mostly irrelevant point, while ignoring the main substance of my post. The only trolls here are the people who don't get this. Whether it bothers you or not is another story, but only the most self deceiving fanboys could find it within themselves to not see why within a science fiction storyline it is ridiculous to have 3500 years pass with about as much cultural, technological, and style changes as about a decades worth here on Earth.
Your post really doesn't have any substance though, unfortunately.
It's one big pile of rhetoric and blanket generalizations based off the sole premise that because over the course of 3500 years in our universe technology would have made some sweeping advancements.
I don't even know why I visit these forums anymore, I think I'm going to stop entirely.
Let's say someone IRL decides to go into suspended animation for 3500 years.
He wakes up, 3500 years later, and looks around. Do you believe that technology will be the same in the year 5511 as it is in 2011?

No offense, but the maker of this post was not aiming at a lore discussion at all. All he wanted was a bash post concealed behind a lore curtain. The header he choose for the topic clearly shows this. All the info and elaboration regarding TOR's time period is available for evryone both here and on the official site. Bioware is neither the creator nor the proprietor of the Star Wars world and lore, KotOR time period included.
In case some people here missed it, there is FIRST the "Star Wars" and the "The Old Republic" follows. Bioware is making an iconic Star Wars world in every aspect and right they do so. The rest is just philosophical mumbling.
I guess what I'm trying to say get rid of the Lightsabers and semi Star Destroyers - Use swords and the like.
Any society that becomes stagnant usually self-implodes.
i know its a lil necromatic to go back to the second page however I have to point out,,,,,,Jedi society did implode, as well as the sith, and hell even the republic you logic is not flawed,,,,,just your ability to suspend reality, Also there are sects of the Jedi and Sith who use normal swords......and early in the Jedi mythos there lightsabers that have to be hooked up to a backpack-like battery pack to work. Study the mythology and you will find out that you are just simply mistaken all that you are pointing out did happen just ask a true Fanboy.

When does Star Wars: The Old Republic take place in relation to the movies?
Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place more than 3,500 years before the rise of Darth Vader
So, with that in mind, please explain why this entire universe has been basically stagnant for 3500 years? Star Destroyer like ships, Jedi with Lightsabers, The Sith, The Jedi and so on.

Regression is also possible, as a reference check the Dark Ages. This same thing actually is used in the history of Star Wars and is named as the Republic Dark Age. According to that history, the Republic had already been in decline for the past thousand year and enters to the Dark Age. In context, Rome was in decline for centuries as well.
Anyway, Bioware did not invent the time period of The Old Republic. There is a lot of background material that predates KOTOR, namely graphic novels that contribute to the history / lore. Some of it goes back to the time when techonology was still rather limited what it is when Death Star is build.
Tales of the Jedi starts from 5000 years before the Battle of Yavin (BBY) and continues until Redemption at 3986 BBY. Technology changes quite a bit during that period.

I agree. The topic of this thread is "the content of this game is bogus," not "Discussion of TOR lore." Nowhere has the poster showed how the content for this game is bogus other than he has an issue with technology looking similiar. What does this have to do with the game itself? As I stated earlier, this is an issue he needs to take up with Lucas since he alone is responsible for how the Star Wars universe looks. TOR is only following what has already been established in the movies as well as in the EUs. If you read the Darth Bane series you see technology that is on par with the movies and some force powers(thought bomb) that were even stronger than anything you saw in the movies. Are those also bogus?
Bioware is at least trying to be faithful to the IP that is is representing, which is more than SOE ever did.
What exactly is so weird about a technological time period lasting for 3500 years?

Technology DOUBLES every year currnt. In Star Wars they have far advanced tech than we do. The OP is pointing out how terrible the writers and designers for this game are at being consistant and making a world with rich history. Ignorant fanboys that don't know anything about how progression of time works wont notice this.
Even Guild Wars 2 (250 years later) has done a good job of showing the age difference in its world. Star Wars doesn't show anything at all. Thats big clue that its just another crappy star wars game depending on its name to pull in and keep subscribers. It wont depend on decent lore or content because it doesn't have to.
And the stone age and bronze age werent exactly the same through out their years. There was a lot of progress made through out both periods.

Let's follow the pattern:
For simplification we go from 1st to nth age as I really don't want to look up all the names.
1st age: 6000 years. 2nd age: 2000 years. 3rd age: 666 years. 4rd age: 222 years. 5th age 75 years. 6th age: 25 years. 7th age: 8 years. 8th age: 3 years. 9th age: 1 year. 10th age: 4 months 11th age: 1 month. 12th age: 10 days. 13th age: 3 days. 14th age: 1 day. 15th age: 8 hours. 16th age: 3 hours.
That 1st age, the stone age was 10.000 years or so ago.
By your calculations we're currently in a time when "ages" change every few minutes because of the radical changes in technology? And extremely soon to be in a time where every few nanoseconds technology will change so radically that a new name is needed?

Funny that, I visited a fair for classic bicycles a few weeks back and was taken aback in how they hadn't changed much at all. Even down to small details like the breaking system, etc.

Not much changed due to all the wars. Read up the history on Wookiepedia to see everything that happened in those 3,500 years.
Also, this happened a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. In other words, it's fantasy dude.

COMPUTER technology doubles about every 18 months.
Most other technologies aren't advancing at anywhere NEAR that.
Cars don't go twice as fast, with twice the gas mileage, and twice the safety features, at twice the durability every 18 months.
As others have suggested, you should read at least SOME of the posts, and you'll see that your argument has already been debunked.
