He s allowed an opinion, but compared to mine it s completely opposite. As far as people saying another wow clone to make money, you have no clue at all.
just another article by a MMO hater. The main gripes he has is pretty much standard in most MMO's. Its like somebody trying out COD 3 and complaining becuase they have shotguns in the game.
And I also don;t like the gushy STWOR fanboy articles either. But if your going to critique a game maybe should not be so biased about the genre.
how can someone make a review of the game when he tryed the game ONLY for 10min with a low level char with only 2 -3 skill on the quickbar?bah another fan of gw2.
Stop bringing up the GW2 straw man every time someone says something negative about SWTOR. It's a pathetic cop out.
As for the demo, 10 minutes isn't long enough to get a decent impression about a game. The failure is in providing such a worthless amount of time. Invest in more stations and give people a good chance to play. But don't bitch about someone's impressions based on such a short period of time. It's what they were given to work with by the company. Expect snap judgments, good and bad, when you offer such a narrow window to make them.
Well looking at his other stuff the author of the article doesn't like MMo's in general. Not all that surprised that he would not like SWTOR honestly. If you don't like the MMo genre then of course you won't like a specific MMo without it tailoring specificly to your offline single player joys. Honestly surprised someone like the author would be excited for an MMo though, but hey maybe no good console rpgs have released recently (I don't really care for consoles so don't know).

Pretty much standard in Themepark games not MMOs in general, unfortunatly all the big publishers have been trying there hardest to get some of that WoW money and not focusing there attention on making real MMORPG's.
Some people are sick of the hand holding and linear single player RPG's and that article would reflect the same views alot of MMORPG gamers have. Don't hate on the people that want something new or innovative.

The fact that he would hate a themepark MMOG is a foregone conclusion, not to mention the fact that it's just one guys opinion from what appears to be a very short gameplay session... Plus you all act as though the fact that SWTOR is a theme park MMOG is some huge shocking revelation suddenly. This dead horse has been beaten so badly that it's apparently alive again.

A lot of my RL friends were at the Eurogamer expo and PAX. Straight after PAX we were really concerned since SWTOR seemed like the game my friends can just get ourselves lost in. Like seriously lost, like WOW did back in the day.
The collective relief we all had since we realized we all can blow (BF3) or shoot (COD:MW3) or hilariously badly play football (FIFA) with each other until the 20th of Dec was immense!

So many hate reponses toward his review of a 10 minute demo. He is simply stating his OPINION on the game from the short time he was able to play it. If you can't accept that people have opnions other than yours then you're a fanboy that is deluding himself into thinking if anyone disagree's with you they are the devil.
Of course it takes time to immerse yourself into a game, but don't blame the writer, blame the event for having such a pitiful game time for a demo. They know people come and write articles based on their experience of he game. The fact the time limit was 10 minutes means some people will have a bad taste in their mouh afterwards if they didn't enjoy it.
As far as his hype for the game, that can go either way from what I see it. Bioware, a great RPG company making a MMO? Sounds awesome. They will take it to the next level. I can't wait to play this demo and see what amazing things they do and change in the MMO world. Wait what? Its a WoW clone in space? Really Bioware? Whos to blame for this? The writer or the hype?

Hey, if someone in the media is going to say stuff like 'SWTOR like WoW!! QQ!' after 4 years of dev/media coverage, then let them. Its not as if we expect more from our journalists, right?
Guys.. right?

I hope this game turns out better than some of the MMOs that have launched in the past 2 years that I unfortunately spent money on such as Star Trek Online and DC Universe Online. RIFT is great though. I love Star Wars and BioWare games but I am a little leery of buying this and having it flop. Oh well, here we go!!!!!!! Everybody in the deep end!
Even though they made my fav game of all time I am not a bioware fan anymore but the issue I have with this game is that they already had a sw mmo and they didnt get the money out of it they had hoped. So they pulled in Bioware to remake the sw franchise in the mmo space. If it fails to live up to their goals are they going to gut this game and run it into the ground and start yet another one? Maybe the interest in a sw mmo is not quite as great as the fan base thinks? regardless I hope it is not fail. If it is and they spent so much making it then other companies moving forward will be nervous about investing in a high profile game in the future I may WANT to play.
Well, if I'm not mistaken, SWG at it's height of popularity had something like 400k subscribers, and that was for a game that was very buggy and grindy. Not to mention, it was a sandbox game with a steep learning curve. Those types of games, for better or worse, aren't as popular as the themepark models due to the majority of people preferring ease of gameplay. BioWare has said that 500k subsriptions is what this game needs at any one time to be making money. If SWG had 400K when it was in a pretty flawed state (pre-NGE, but at a time when the game had a lot of bugs), then it's pretty safe to assume the Star Wars fans do carry quite a bit of weight. And it's pretty safe to say that BioWare should be able to get the extra 100K subscriptions beyond what SWG got at the very minimum. We'll see, though. There does seem to be much more backlash towards standard themepark MMOs these days, at least publicly, than there was 5 years ago. People do want something new and innovative, so maybe SWTOR will see some backlash from that. But you have to think the odds of success are in their favor, at least in the short term. How they retain their subscribers through enddame content will be the key for longterm success.
I recall that as well but the mmo landscape from 2003 and 2011-2012 are totally different. Point is SW fans are diehards and I respect that but The diehard fansdont all play mmo's either. Hell even video games for that matter. I think 500k is a reasonable number to expect for their subs. It will allow them to remain in a profitable business model and provide funding for future DLC, I mean, expansions. I think SW should have stayed a sandbox type game and Bioware is not the developer for that kind of game. Perhaps Bethesda for that? Anyways I wish Bio had just done a Mass Effect MMO. I think it would do much better than SW. SW IP's have a great out of the package burst in sales and thats it.
According to VGChartz (Yes, not exactly a great source) TOR currently has around 450-500k Pre-Orders in America alone.
I'd also bet that BioWare will know how to keep hold of a lot of players. An IP alone will never have any holding power, its all in the developers hands.
Also...KOTOR >>>> ME.
You have to take into account that, yes there are 450-500k pre-orders in the USA. But then the only countires that CAN pre-order is USA and parts of Europe...The rest of the world aren't allowed to.
Not good news. While the article was rather short and you really can't review a MMO after half an hours play it do tells us some things about the games controls, and not good things either.
Hopefully will the story be good enough so that we don't care if the UI and combat mechanics could be more innovative, I really need to try the game myself before I can decide if it is a game I want to play or not.
A bad review like this is not a didadter, just slightly worrying so relax, Bioware fans. The open beta better be good though, or they will loose many potential customers.
I still hope the game is good, Bioware used to be a very competent company and while thought D 1 & 2 and ME 1 & 2 were just so-so I still feels that I own them to try out this game, after all the hours of fun BG 1& 2 and NWN have given me.
Let the game speak for itself, try the open beta before you decide if this is a game for you or not.

First off i want to state that the atricle is based on an impression (thats the creators words not mine) so he is entitled to it. I will also point out this isn't a common opinion amongst the majority. Also the creator states that they got 10 mins of playtime. If i know questing like i do. This is probably how it ran down Min 1: basic start up, looking at the pre-made characters and loading into the game. Min 2 and 3: Talking to the quest npc Min 4 and 5: running to the required mob Min 6 and 7: Killing the mob. Min 8: Running back to the quest NPC Min 9 and 10: turning in the quest. So if my basic run down is right. He got to play one quest in a starter zone. If we know MMOs the starting quest usually starts off slow with limited abilities. Now Bioware has also stated that some attacks would be able to be placed on the ground and fired off without needing a target. I will just say it's his opinion on immersiveness but i disagree with it based on what i got to play. Disclaimer No i'm not in beta wish i was though.
That clown probably spent five minutes "figuring out" how to access the character creation screen (which he wasn't supposed to) and only had five minutes to actually test the thing before he got thrown off.
My guess is he wrote his "review" by proxy; watching someone else play while he was waiting in line and then afterwards.
Can't do all he claims to have done in less than ten minutes time. So many assumptions in one post. Maybe it took him 10 seconds to find the button. He got in, about the 15 second mark he was kicked out and the employee shouted at him from across the room. He spent the remaining 9minutes and 45 seconds on playing the game.
About as accurate as your theory. I think I wrote as many assumptions about what he did in ten minutes as he did in ten minutes about SWTOR overall.

The problem with your statement is "SOME people are tired of the hand holding." Some. Not most. Themepark MMOs are still where the money is at, because people like ease of gameplay. They don't want to pay $15 a month to bash their brains on their keyboard trying to figure out how to play a game and having to make their own content. For better or worse, and there are arguments on both sides, that's the way it is currenlty. So a company will indeed take that formula, add in their own tweaks to it, and have a better chance of making money of their game then setting up a sandbox and telling people to go make their own content. I have no problem with people who don't enoy themepark games. But to act like the public is clamoring for something different than the themepark model isn't true. Some people are. Heck, maybe many people are. But not MOST people. Most people are happy with a standard themepark game that throws in some new wrinkles. And companies are always going to play the odds when it comes to turning a profit. Personally, I think the future of MMOs will lie somewhere in a hybrid model. I think there needs to be some hand holding and some pre-made content. But I'd like to see upcoming MMOs also give people the freedom to play the way they want and do what they want. Many people think GW2 is that game. I don't. I think it's going to be closer to a thempark than many want to believe. I hope that Archeage can be that kind of game, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm not worried one little bit. I was in the beta and have about 60+ hours into the game, I know what my opinion is and am eagerly awaiting playing the game when it goes live...
Also, there isn't going to be an open beta. They are adding more and more people as time goes on and doing the weekend stress tests, but there will never be an open beta period.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
I stopped taking him seriously when he complained about using buttons to attack. What are they supposed to do? Ship the thing with a cybernetic implant that allows you to attack by thinking about it?
The first ten minutes of WoW aren't that enthralling (at least they weren't when I started years ago). The first ten minutes of Fallen Earth used to be epic but apparently the original tutorial was "too confusing" so they made it boring and ploddy too. Seriously at level one in most games you have 1-3 attacks, combat is boring as hell because there's nothing to do but hit 1-2-3-2-1-1-2 etc.
I always give a game a good 12 hours before I form an opinion on it, get out of the tutorial zone, into the world, get some more skills and see how I feel about it. 10 mins isn't enough to judge a game one way or another. It's not enough for a preview even.
When the NDA drops, ask me about SW:TOR, but don't pm me now because I won't even read 'em. Yeah, I admit it, I'm in testing. But that's all I'm saying til the NDA drops, and I've kept zipped about being in testing for some time already. And I'm not going to comment on that "preview" beyond what I've said already.
While I do understand sandbox fans not liking the linear hand holding (I'm sick of it as well). I don't understand why so many twitch combat fans are on an MMO site looking at a SWTOR thread? Are they going to continue to complain until all MMO's are twitch based?
Of course the writer was disapointed, he obviously did ZERO research about the game befor he laid his hands on it. Walking into a ford dealership looking for an dodge is going to dissapoint you no mater what... come on, I smell troll in that article.
The writer is a sandbox mmorpg fan, he doesn't even enjoy themepark games.
Not good news. While the article was rather short and you really can't review a MMO after half an hours play it do tells us some things about the games controls, and not good things either.
Depends on what you want to believe. I choose to believe people that have played the game much longer than 10 minutes as to their impressions of the game controls. Of the people that have leaked info from playing the game first-hand, this guy is the first one I've seen refer to it as "clumsy." Most of the others, the ones who got to play for more than 10 minutes, have used terms like "tight" and "responsive" in regards to the controls.
So yeah...I'm not worried. My issue will be with content, not the way the game handles. Because I know the games controls will be top-notch, and the combat will be better than most themepark tab-target games.
Yet another gamer who has either completely ignored what the developers said the game would be like or blindly goes into these things thinking everything is going to cater to their every whim. I agree with one of the above posters, this guy is shopping for a dodge in a ford dealership. This guy is spazzing out about things that were never inteded to be in the game. Expecting FPS style combat, really? They said from the very beginning they were modeling the game after World of Warcraft, this is not news people. They said the side quests would be typical MMO fare, yet people keep gasping that there are kill 10 / fedex quests, none of which are part of the class story lines.
I'm getting so sick and tired of this crap. If you're going to review a game, do some gawd damn research before you open your fat mouths.

The original article actually makes some good points and I speak as someone who has the SWTOR: CE on pre-order.
However, I suspect the content of this thread isn't on the article itself but the quoting out of context the thread title is.
The good points were that the demo was '10mins' and that it didn't grab him initially.
Well, DUH! 10mins isn't enough to grab me on most games! Especially the tutorial.
'Press Forward to move FORWARD!' yeah, that so grabs me! -.-
I'm going to ignore the 'but it is like WoW' angle since c'mon, this is someone at MASSIVELY, an MMO site.
If someone was really surprized at that one, I'd seriously re-consider what they know about MMOs.

The writer is a sandbox mmorpg fan, he doesn't even enjoy themepark games.
He couldn't be anymore biased if he tried.
Judging by the way things have been the last few years, yes, they absolutely will.
