I also think its a little funny how Swtor fans on this site will post some random article off a non gaming website and rave about how the author liked the game, but then when I major game site posts a negative preview article its " Move along. Nothing to see here. Move along. " Hahaha.....sorry. Had to laugh.
I noticed the same thing.
I hate to say it, but this reminds me all too much of how WAR's pre-release, and not in a good way. I also don't see how it's any more valid for someone to post a positive 'review / impression' on a 10minute gameplay session, than someone doing the same but w/ a negative outlook. Anyway, just some food for thought I suppose. I still think this game will be fun to a lot of people, but I think it's delusional to think that this game will apply to all.
Glad to see there are some rational minds in this thread.

Ummm, you mean like PC Gamer? They played it for 6 hours and gave it a very positive review. Exactly.
If this author had said he spent six hours on SWTOR like the other guy, then put all the same exact gripes he had about it, I'd respect that much more. Or one hour. Hell, just 30 minutes would have TRIPLED his demo time lol.
But ten minutes? Seriously? That really isn't worthy of any kind of real consideration. I mean, it's his opinion that after playing ten minutes of a game he came to all those conclusions? Not likely.
Sounds more like he had an idea of what he heard about the game and in those ten minutes just tried to find or reinforce those things instead of playing it open-minded.
He should start a blog called "The Ten Minute Game Review", then proceed to try every single game for only ten minutes and do complete writeups like this one with SWTOR. I bet he could parlay that into some cash because there are enough morons raised on commercials who will probably think he's spot on about games.

I know for a fact I said move along, move along, but i'd say the same about a posi review at this point. It's all just more of what we've been doing here for months. Bickering back and forth about who's opinion is correct. It get's us no where, it divides the two sides even more and brings unneeded moderation to both. And for what?

Of course the writer was disapointed, he obviously did ZERO research about the game befor he laid his hands on it. Walking into a ford dealership looking for an dodge is going to dissapoint you no mater what... come on, I smell troll in that article.
The writer is a sandbox mmorpg fan, he doesn't even enjoy themepark games.
He couldn't be anymore biased if he tried.
And you appear to be just another rabid fan. You couldn't be any more biased if you tried either.
The writer actually mentions NOTHING that even suggests he is a sandbox fan. Your assumptions are really getting painful to read. Or do you assume that anyone that doesn't like "kill 10 space rats" quests is an insane, blind sandbox maniac?
Uhm, speaking of doing research... If you look at Brendans article history you would know he's an EVE Online player.
Why would I research some obscure poster on some site I hardly ever visit? Nothing in his post was about sandbox style gameplay.
Thanks for proving that nothing I said was an assumption at all, and then admitting that you know nothing about the author and chose to attack me regardless.
If you are looking for amazing groundbreaking combat systems you are playing the wrong genre. Bioware is known for its great storytelling and this game has that. I am currently in the beta and I can say I love the game so far, but thats because it is what I expected it to be. I think hype is such a destroyer of pretty good games. I've lost count of how many good games I've played that were touted as bad just because they couldn't live up to the rediculous hype. Anyone who is a big fan of star wars should know that almost everything mainstream with the word star wars in it will be overhyped.
I hate to say it, but this reminds me all too much of how WAR's pre-release, and not in a good way.
Except that those in beta for warhammer were complaning of many issues.
the only thing I've been seeing from beta players is a polarization in their like for how the game is being developed.
Guy at my work who is in beta is respecting the NDA however his only break to me was a huge "thumbs up".
If there were huge issues, like warhammer had, then I doubt that would have been his response.
The whole "warhammer/AoC/SWToR thing doesn't hold water because they aren't the same thing and they certainly didn't share the same issues.
This is not saying that SWToR will be a success but it seems that it won't suffer from the things that Warhammer and AoC suffered from.
No doubt you are an even tempered man and speak with great wisdom, however you are ignoring the fanbase we are looking to to give us an unbiased review. Anyone who has been around and is a gamer and followed pop culture for the last 15+ years knows the unrational craziness that is star wars fandom (I was one in my younger years). Furthermore, there is the hardcore Bioware fans, not without good reason, that adore anything the company touches. Combining the 2 to make the KOTOR zealots.
I think there has been enough of us trying to get people to see the 'big issues' but the zealots will not have it and move to destroy anyone who says anythign but '2 thumbs up'

Oh I hear you and there is a lot of "power" behind those who will look at an ip and not be willing to see "huge issues".
But i'm not getting that there reall are huge issues here. As I said, my coworker seems jazzed at the whole thing and is playing the beta quite a lot.
I would call him a fan bu not a fanboy.
Agan, I think SWToR will not suffer from huge issues. It will suffer from not being drastically "different" from other mmo's and because of this, those who are clamoring for something different or the people, like gentleman who penned this column who are EVE fans (or not fans of theme park games), will hate it.
For those people who are just interested in a Star Wars game and don't mind the mmo trappings, their test will come when they have gone through the story and need to lean on the other mmo mechanics that are included in the game.
Any issues SWToR will have, for the most part, will not be at launch but will be maintaining altitude.

People take 3rd party opinions WAY too seariously and don't even try to be patient to formulate their own opinions. For some reason, many people forgot some very important parts of the article:
I found myself struggling to unearth both new information on the game
Testers were presented with a set of new pre-made characters
given access only to the tutorial area
So the guy had a preview of a preview and he's not impressed....ok...
Also, this struck me as a surprising comment:
Given how much money is being thrown at Star Wars: The Old Republic, I was genuinely surprised that BioWare had stuck with the WoW gameplay model
Has this guy even followed the development and videos of the game? Seriously people, why do you insist on taking the word of a nobody about a game they barely got to see and then regurgitate it as your own opinion - as if you actually have an informed opinion.
I have pre-ordered SWTOR, but i´m starting to get a little worried about it
Not that i was expecting a revolutionary game (for that i have GW2) but i´m starting to think Bioware maybe missed a chance to make something Unique...something new & outsatanding.
All the feedback i´m getting from SWTOR is about wow-clone gameplay.... not that i hate wow...but i´m trully burnt of that kind of gameplay.
I really hope Bioware susprises me when the game launches. -.-
5) His comments about the game controls were truly the first I'd seen anywhere that stated that combat was "clumsy." Everyone I've seen commenting previously has stated that the combat in this game was really tight. His experience was completely the opposite of what others have experienced. And again...he sounds surprised when he talks about it being your typical "tab target" combat. How can this be surprising to anyone who's followed this game for any amount of time? Again, it's a standard themepark style MMO.
...
The main reason why he said it was clumsy was because he played GW2 first, hence why this is Part 2 of the article!
Also, in the comments section, the reason why i think Massively reporters seem to talk bad on SW:TOR and not GW2 is because:
"Brendan Drain said "As part of the Joystiq network, Massively employees abide by the Joystiq integrity policy, forbidding us from accepting gifts above $20. This includes paid trips to events; even if every other site in the industry is getting flown out and put up in hotels for free we can't (and shouldn't) accept it."

My status probably does in some form lead to my opinion as it is today, however I still felt like that before my status came to be as it stands. I'm all for a good debate and exchange of idea's. At the same time conversations like this rarely stick to the original premise of good debate. They turn into an endless round of fighting over who's opinion, iterpretation or experience is the correct one. At some point peeps just need to give it a rest and just let opinions be opinions.

I have to agree that 10mins is not a long time especially at lower levels, especially at the starting levels. Any gamer veteran or to be specific, a WoW veteran knows how huge of a difference there is in gameplay between levels 1 and 70 or even in some cases between 79 and 80.
Also I'm not a fan of twitched based combat in an mmo format in general so giving up emulating one style just to copy gw2's style wouldnt be an improvement would it?
It's good that theres a healthy debate still going on but it would be awesome to see more factual links, like the 1 that showed that the reviewer was a heavy EVE fan. The NDA won't last forever and soon no one will be able to hide behind factless opinion spew. I won't call any names but so far I've seen 2-3 fanboi's of Bioware contradict their previous posts, even their own logic and I've seen a few TOR haters ignore logic all together. This leaves me with a little hope that TOR will be somewhere in the middle between playable and predictable
Bbut again 10mins in a crowded room feeling rushed by other people wanting to play, after standing in line for 2hrs and, possibly being hungry for the better part of the day while, possibly sweating bullets and smelling other peoples BO is not a good environment to welcome immersion.

If he spent one hour, maybe. But ten minutes?
It wouldn't matter if he spent a hundred hours playing it. If he came back with a negative review, fans would still use his EVE background to discredit his opinions. I agree that ten minutes isn't enough time to get a good feel for the game, but that was the demo time limit they were offering. He made quick judgments based on what little that was there. Had he come back gushing about it, the short period he spent playing would suddenly be irrelevant -- and so would his dirty little sandbox habit.
Not singling out SWTOR because fans of pretty much all games are guilty of it.

That usually is the case, really everyone will have their own experience in TOR or any game. There will be some overlap, but we all have of our own perspective and circumstance we experience a game from.
As for these threads, on forums you have a diverse crowd, some people love to debate, some love to bait, some just love to PVP. In the end always look at the middle ground that's your safest bet in finding some form of substance in these discusions.

I wasn't really implying huge glaring bugs and such, more of the manner in which the pre-release is being handled / how the players & fans are reacting.
Aside from the bugs, WAR did attract a lot of attention & popularity at launch, even though it didn't last. You also have some of the same people working on this game. I have seen complaints from beta players (though you're right, it's not as severe as WAR), but most of these complaints seem to be either swept under the rug, ignored, or flamed to death by fanboys. It's amazing how many times I have repeat this statement, but I do think many people will find this game fun. I also think that there is such an overzealous effort to stamp out anything criticizing this game that many people are going to be led to some false expectations of it. Just like with what happened with WAR.
Those expectations are only going to hold up for so long, until people have been playing the game for a time. And like you said, most of the criticism doesn't have to do with polish, but rather with how the game is being developed. I can't speak for anyone else, but to me I find that worrisome. I will still probably end up playing it, as I think I could at least get a month or two of fun out of the game (which for me justifies the cost of the normal box price), but I do have doubts about it's long-term appeal.
- You're also right in regards to AoC, but with warhammer I do think is a valid comparison. Why? Because what's left of the team that made that game is working on TOR. Like it or not, they are influencing the game in one way or another. From the looks of things, mostly in regards to PvP (which is what they've been assigned to handle). Bioware is obviously handling the story elements (which is a really good thing), but for me personally it won't be enough to keep the MMO experience going.
5) His comments about the game controls were truly the first I'd seen anywhere that stated that combat was "clumsy." Really? That's what you're going with? That SWTOR only gets good reviews when BioWare bribes the company? Of all the silly posts on this thread, and there are a lot...you just won the prize. Congrats. Pick up your tinfoil hat on the way out.

There are plenty of people going to play SWTOR with totally realistic expectations of just a fun game. They aren't looking for the next "genre setter". Fans will always be fans of any game, but it's clear the author only glossed over the game but pretended to spend more than ten minutes into it by writing as much as he did.
There have already been critical reviews from people who've played it longer than ten minutes, but their background was never brought up or who they write for.
I think most people understand this game is going to be a different kind of game from the typical hardcore mindset so they don't think more of the game is going to have all sorts of innovations.

The main reason why he said it was clumsy was because he played GW2 first, hence why this is Part 2 of the article!
AKA: They dont accept money from BW, so they arent obligated to write a good review because BW gave them money.
That is all
My status probably does in some form lead to my opinion as it is today, however I still felt like that before my status came to be as it stands.

"LOL"
Do you enjoy strife or really think this post was a good idea?

I told you so.
Every concern I had voiced for the game, every aspect I'd brought up critically all feature in the artical.

I need to take this advice more.
Really? That's what you're going with? That SWTOR only gets good reviews when BioWare bribes the company? Of all the silly posts on this thread, and there are a lot...you just won the prize. Congrats. Pick up your tinfoil hat on the way out.

Idk.. I don't think it's rational to read a ten minute review of a game as gospel. Doesn't sound sane to me as a player.
Not singling out SWTOR because fans of pretty much all games are guilty of it.
I don't think that's true.
