On topic : The guy is clearly pissed he only got ten minutes to play a restricted version of the game. I would be too, but I certainly wouldn't go write up a review for something so trivial.
Honestly, if you thought SWTOR was going to be revolutionary you were lost to begin with. The same can be said for those hounding about GW2: if you think it'll live up to all the hype ANET is buzzing, I have bad news for you.
If you want to find out more information about SWTOR, you'd have better luck - significantly so - by simply typing the name into google and watching some videos on a few of the more well-known leak sites.
I look forward to SWTOR, regardless of how WOW-esq it might be. Blizzard held my attention for 6 years, if Bioware can make something with similar qualities then it will be a much easier transition for me. Maybe I'll actually enjoy SWTOR for more than a month.
Has anyone looked at Brendan Drain's profile on massively? Its kinda funny, it uses a ton of words to say "This dude does NOTHING at all but play eve 24/7"
I also think its a little funny how Swtor fans on this site will post some random article off a non gaming website and rave about how the author liked the game, but then when I major game site posts a negative preview article its " Move along. Nothing to see here. Move along. " Hahaha.....sorry. Had to laugh.
I noticed the same thing.
I hate to say it, but this reminds me all too much of how WAR's pre-release, and not in a good way. I also don't see how it's any more valid for someone to post a positive 'review / impression' on a 10minute gameplay session, than someone doing the same but w/ a negative outlook. Anyway, just some food for thought I suppose. I still think this game will be fun to a lot of people, but I think it's delusional to think that this game will apply to all.
Glad to see there are some rational minds in this thread.
Idk.. I don't think it's rational to read a ten minute review of a game as gospel. Doesn't sound sane to me as a player.
If he spent one hour, maybe. But ten minutes?
It wouldn't matter if he spent a hundred hours playing it. If he came back with a negative review, fans would still use his EVE background to discredit his opinions. I agree that ten minutes isn't enough time to get a good feel for the game, but that was the demo time limit they were offering. He made quick judgments based on what little that was there. Had he come back gushing about it, the short period he spent playing would suddenly be irrelevant -- and so would his dirty little sandbox habit.
Not singling out SWTOR because fans of pretty much all games are guilty of it.
I don't think that's true. There are plenty of people going to play SWTOR with totally realistic expectations of just a fun game. They aren't looking for the next "genre setter". Fans will always be fans of any game, but it's clear the author only glossed over the game but pretended to spend more than ten minutes into it by writing as much as he did.
There have already been critical reviews from people who've played it longer than ten minutes, but their background was never brought up or who they write for.
I think most people understand this game is going to be a different kind of game from the typical hardcore mindset so they don't think more of the game is going to have all sorts of innovations.
I seem to recall some PvP review done not so long ago where two of the three reviewers were pretty critical of the game. I believe the accusation at that point was that they weren't qualified to review it at all because they were console jockeys. I might be wrong though, but I'm almost positive that was a SWTOR review.
Point is that discrediting someone because their opinion runs counter to your own is pretty common. And again, if he wrote a glowing review, the fans wouldn't be thinking twice about his gaming pedigree or the length of his play session. Instead then, it would be SWTOR detractors who would be picking him apart using the exact same pseudo-arguments.

I remember that review but you also had to take into account those players experiences beforehand. SWTOR was the first mmo they played so they are comparing it to what they know (console games players if I recall correctly). So I'd take their opinions with a grain of salt.

That did happen but when 3 people run a game over because they prefer FPS gameplay, there will be people pointing out it's not a game designed for those people, and understandably so.

That's just it, though. There really aren't that many critical reviews on this game (that don't break the NDA). I have yet to see a game, since the old days of super mario bros, that didn't have any real criticism about it. Especially when it comes to MMOs. Forgive me for being skeptical, but that bothers me. If somehow the game really is a 10/10 and perfect, then hell yea! However, there's nothing that leads me to believe that any of the games coming out this year are perfect.
Bioware also is using wordage to imply that it IS trying to make a 'different kind of MMO'. Fans following the game religiously, know that it is also based on the WoW model of MMO. This doesn't mean everyone does, and certainly not everyone who's going to play this game are necessarily MMO gamers. There's a lot of Bioware fans who normally could care less about MMOs, who are considering giving this game a go. There's an insane amount of hype swirling around this game, with very little info actually released on the game itself.
- Also, the author clearly states he only had 10minutes to play the game, so I don't know where he's supposed to be pretending anything. He undoubtedly had a bad experience, and he was probably emotional when writing the review, but he was given a 10minute demo of the game and he didn't like it. What else is he really supposed to say.
Given how much money is being thrown at Star Wars: The Old Republic, I was genuinely surprised that BioWare had stuck with the WoW gameplay model down to the last detail, even when it didn't work very well or suit the setting. If all you're looking for is a new Star Wars-themed MMO with familiar gameplay, then SWTOR is sure to be a big hit with you. I personally left the demo at Eurogamer Expo distinctly underwhelmed and a little bit disappointed.
I am not sure what to say when I read this. What was this person expecting? Tons of money thrown at something instantly makes it the most uber, innovative game? Idk, everything I have heard from the internetz (and one lucky friend in beta) is that the game is not going to be breaking any moulds, but that it's solid game. If you like the formula used by previous games, this one will be good for you. Not sure what people are expecting.....It's a solid game with a good story, pretty much all I have heard.
Also is it possible they cancelled the character because they didn't want everyone sitting there for two hours trying to figure out how to maximize the boob size on their twi'lek?
I dont understand this reasoning to be quite honest. Its not like there are another hundred or so clones 'JUST LIKE SWTOR' out already, msot recently Rift. Plus you have the granddaddy of all themepark MMO's that dont break the mold in WoW.
Seriously when I play a new game I actually want it to be a NEW game, its a novel concept but its true.
Mark my words 3 months after SWToR comes out, servers will be merged and massive amounts of players will be going back to WoW or their other games because of the sense of Deja-Vu with this title.

Ive played 99% of the MMOs released in the past 15 years. I would jump from game to game, sometimes a month, two months this was all well and good but I never finished any of the MMOs, and by finish I mean get to level cap and complete all or most of the content. This was until I started playing World of Warcraft. I played warcraft for about 6 years. This game really nailed how to capture people. Were there things I didnt like about it? yes of course, but in the end I really wanted to log in and play. Let me tell you, I will be so happy if SWTOR is a wow clone. THIS IS STAR WARS. SWG tried to be new at the time, and I played it for 2 months. Had no desire to log in. I was so dissapointed. (it was also SoE, which is aguaranteed to ruin a game)
Here are a few games that tried to be innovative that were considered triple A mmos, and well we know what happened to them.
Conan
Warhammer
APB
This being said, I really do hope this is a wow clone, so I can play it for years to come, I have played all the games that tried to be innovative. They arent fun. If it isnt broke, DONT FIX IT. Most people reading this, do or have played wow for an extensive time and have never really been held by any other MMO, or game in general. They may be thinking to themselves "im sick of warcraft, I need something new and innovative", well you don't, If you loved playing WoW and Love starwars like I do, you will be thanking bioware making it like World of Warcraft.
Bioware's SWTOR = innovative gameplay when it comes to story and lore in MMOs
Case closed. Next subject.
The article was very clear as to how "helpful" the voice overs were regarding the quality of the game.
The author conceded that perhaps it got better later on, but posed to question why BiOWare wouldn't showcase the better parts.
In either case, it is dire for BioWare. If it does indeed get better at other parts, then why didn't they show it? It implies they fail massively at product promotion.
And if that is how thinsg look to 50, then the game isn't riveting, exciting or ground breaking.
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
- You're also right in regards to AoC, but with warhammer I do think is a valid comparison. Why? Because what's left of the team that made that game is working on TOR. Like it or not, they are influencing the game in one way or another. From the looks of things, mostly in regards to PvP (which is what they've been assigned to handle). Bioware is obviously handling the story elements (which is a really good thing), but for me personally it won't be enough to keep the MMO experience going.
Maybe/Maybe not.
The one thing I've learned over my years is that just because something goes wrong doesn't mean that the crew who was handling the project was at fault.
Sometimes it's bad management, sometimes it's higher ups who are a bit over zealous to get a project going, sometimes it's just lack of time.
I remember when i was a beta tester for "Masters of Orion III". I loved number 2 and was lucky enough to get into the beta of the 3rd incarnation. AFter it was launched there was a cry on many forums of "where were the beta testers".
Well, the beta testers were saying things were wrong, that the game had issues. In short "it wasn't out fault".
We don't know what happened to Warhammer. What plans were made and then changed because people got nervous and wanted/needed to release.
I'm not worried about the game. Having seen it in action first hand (from 7 feet away admitedly) and from the few positive things (and negative) I've seen, I really dont' think there will be any huge issues at launch other than perhaps some server stability issues.
The real test and where things can really go south, is a few months after launch.
That should be interesting.

Well I honestly sort of feel the same way. Except its WAY too early to be saying " I told you so " .
Game is still not out ya know. Thats like saying " I told you the Titanic was going to sink! " before the ship has left dock. Not to say that Swtor will sink. It wont.
Hey I really dont think this is going to be my bag of beans. But theres going to be fans after release. Its going to likely be an excellent alternative to WoW. While I dont really appreciate much here, many will. That much I just feel I know. But Im not buying the thing. Ive played that before. You can color an egg red but its still an egg. Tired of eggs. You are right. If its a good review haters will say they are a WoW fanboy or something and if its bad people say they hate MMO's. It's exactly the reason why other peoples views on games are pointless, you will never really know until you yourself try the game.
The only thing important from other players really is how the performance of the game is.
But again 10mins in a crowded room feeling rushed by other people wanting to play, after standing in line for 2hrs and, possibly being hungry for the better part of the day while, possibly sweating bullets and smelling other peoples BO is not a good environment to welcome immersion.

Hey, I am not predicting doom-and-gloom for the game.
Simply saying that it is not all that the fan-nerds bleated it would be. When they called me a hater, a troll for saying things I see confirmed, I do feel pleasantly vindicated.
Things like combat - how on earth does that "get better"? The combat will remain the same unless BiOWare does a major overhaul of the game in the next few months. Or even in future expacs. I have better chance of seeing God than BioWare revamping their combat.
I also repeatedly cited lame, grindy quests; and multiple reviewers echoed my sentiments. Of course, they're "haters" too.

Thats nice for you, but alot of players want something more meaty out of the genre. Some of us want to bring about what made us get into this genre in the first place, namely exploration, community building and strong reliance on pride in a job well done. Not be handed everything on a silver platter and coaxed into making what should be a gritty online world into a hello dolly wonderworld themepark.
By the way those 2 of those games you mentioned are WoW clones for the most part, and 3rd is a shitty sub-genre of the MMO market. Most MMO gamers want polish and innovation with very little hand holding, all of it in a terrific IP or in an awesome viscreal fantasy world. The funny thing is that for every gamer like you who want a complete copy of WoW, there are a dozen disgruntled MMO vets who want to see that style of game play torn away and buried.
The thing people like you fail to understand is that MMO's are spiritual successors t othe old pen and paper RPG's of old and us old timers treat it as such. hence the passion we have in not wanting to be told what to do, where to go, and how to get there.

Bad reviews give me hope for this game. Almost every horrible game that was suppose to be a "wow killer" had nearly no negative reviews. Also I think bad reviews help ground some people. They think know all about a game and are sad when that "one feature" that makes some game above all others isn't in it.

I 100% agree with you.
Errrr....well. Thats a fair enough point but at the same time I think the guy played other things and he wasnt as dire about those. I really think he honestly didnt like what he saw in Swtor.
All ten mintues of playing it. Which is really the point. So in other words he wasnt thrilled with the first ten minutes of.....the tutorial. Because tutorials are by God the most exciting part of the game. We all know that.
Its the ten minute thing that sort of bothers me. If you only had ten minutes with the game? Dont bother trying to write a preview article. I wouldnt. I just couldnt justify it.

I want steak. Of course....steak AND eggs is pretty nifty too.
But I suggest saving your " I told you so's " until after release when there's at least a valid reason to maybe say it. : P
You are right. If its a good review haters will say they are a WoW fanboy or something and if its bad people say they hate MMO's. It's exactly the reason why other peoples views on games are pointless, you will never really know until you yourself try the game.
The only thing important from other players really is how the performance of the game is.
I 100% agree with you.
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
I need to take this advice more.

Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.
Bad reviews give me hope for this game. Almost every horrible game that was suppose to be a "wow killer" had nearly no negative reviews. Also I think bad reviews help ground some people. They think know all about a game and are sad when that "one feature" that makes some game above all others isn't in it.
Then Final Fantasy XIV is your game bud!
People Like you who hate on a game without ever playing, and taking random peoples opinions is the definition of stupid.
You can write a list of every game that you love, or loved to play, and I can find you someone who hated it.
Johnny La gente esta MUY LOCA WATAFAK !!
haha no but really I was just saying. Hearing every reviewer or gaming website only praise a game over and over is usually a bad sign.
Edit: espeically super hype games.
