when did MMOs become about some story that some random writer is telling the player. thats what single player games are for. MMOs should be about you creating your own story for your character maybe not in a literal sense but more of what your actions are in game and im not just talking about sandbox games. in EQ i didn't have a writer telling me MY CHARACTERs story, same in DAOC nor EQ2.
so why is it so important to the players in SWTOR, especially since your character has the same exact story as EVERY OTHER character in your chosen class.
I don't know about you but most single player games I play, I am able to create my own story. MMO's are a little different in the story department as it's hard to do it when you have quests in them. That's why I love PvP myself because I am able to create my story through my actions and it is different every single time I engage in PvP.
This is why I personally loved Warhammer Online and am looking forward to SWTOR as it will have similar PvP that WAR had. You can't really find MMO's anymore that give you the type of experience you had in EQ because there are not a lot of people who have that kind of commitment to play a game for so long and get so little out of it.
Purpose in life is not to gain things, but experience. - Rover64dd
Says who? by the way, I hope you're not one of those folks who are demanding a "different, unique" MMO experience, since you seem quick to demand what should or shouldn't be in an MMO...
different, unique nah i lost all hope for that I will settle for something more than WoW 2.0 with a couple "bonus features"
Then this isn't the game for you, as you can't seem to appreciate a world that puts you in a scenario in which you can define your character, or use your imagination to develop unique motivations and ambition for said character in the wake of the scenario that's unfolding. Nothing wrong with that.
thats funny since I have been able to do that in pretty much every MMORPG to date and even in skyrim. but It must be because I lack imagination. and not because the game is on rails, basically gives your character a back story that is nearly identical to every other player that decided to choose the same class as mine. oh but my darkside faction may be a bit higher than others. however probably not since the game TELLS YOU if you are picking a dark/light side conversation choice
but it must be my lack of imagination LOL
That's a fair enough question. Like many other games, or moreso, really, since you have your ship, you CAN choose to leave the linear path of the story at, say, level 15, fly your ship to the highest level planet, and attempt to sneak past the ultra-purple baddies to seek out the hidden chrons. Or just hang out in the Cantina. Whatever. You can hang out in a similar level scavenger camp or house, blasting scavs away whenever they appear, yelling: My house! Go get your own!"
LOL id rather own my own house instead of fighting off respawns forever because im pretending its my house and not some random building.
This binary thinking, really has got to stop. "there are linear missions. That means I can't go do whatever I want to." All you need is a bit of imagination.

Story was an integral part of both Daoc and EQ2, in SWTOR it is just more interactive.
So you have seen everything before? Lightsabers in every other game
Single handed weapon the replicates the combat of a bladed weapon. Example; Sword. Yes.
full voice over in every other game?
Elder Scrolls Series. Just to name one.
Science fiction/fantasy in every other game?
Endless Ages, Tabula Rasa, Neocron, Matrix Online, Project Entropia, etc, etc, etc.
If that's yoru criteria for judging a game's originality, I'd like you to point out a truly original game that has come out in the last decade. By your standard, ALL games are derivative, particularly if you are going to compare an mmorpg like SWTOR with a single player rpg like the Elder Scroll games.
And you'll have to trust me on this: Bladed weapon combat is NOT the same as light saber combat if you are an actual Star Wars fan. It feels fundamentally different, believe it or not.
And the mmos you named that are science fiction ones are crap MMOs. Try to at least pick something that had some success.
I've seen many video's of this game.. but don't see any new things in it..
Why are people so excited of this game? to me its just an tab target quest from a to b game?
I predict this game will end up the same as rift..
Your prediction is 100% correct.
For his prediction to be 100% correct SWTOR has to release and then flop but since none of it has happened i have no idea how his prediction can be true. Or you have your own meaning of word 'prediction'?.
*rolls eyes*
Maybe he means its going to be the 2nd most populated/successful MMO after WoW? Because no game will ever come close to those numbers again.
Yes that is exactly what is means, Thanks Derros. People should stop overreacting so much, chill out, or stop drinking so much coffee ;-) lol
they lost 60% of there playerbase after the first month?
Those are probably considerably better than average numbers for a P2P game, so they could be viewed as quite successful actually. A lot, let's face it, most P2P games fare worse.
And you are certainly entitled to your opinion. Millions of subscribers will disagree with you come December 20th.
but will those millions disagee with me in six months after it launches?
My opinion? Absolutely.
Warhammer had the largest amount of beta players and initial subscribers (at least I think it still holds) of any MMO at launch and you know how that one faired.
You're entitled to your opinion as well, but you speak for everyone that is going to play it as if they'll absolutely love it with no reservations. Seems a TAD dillusional to me.

I agree. I'm sure for Trion the game is quite profitable.
Before this past weekend test (my first time testing it) I knew for certain that my expectatioins were simply to unrealistically high and it would not be able to live up to that, so I prepaired myself as best as I could to try and judge the game by some reasonable standards.
{mod edit}
But don't like it, don't play it, it doesn't really matter to me, I just know I can't wait till early access!
It's funny, I'm having trouble logging in to any of my other games after the beta weekend as well. That has not happened in a long long time.
this right here. i'm attempting to log into my other games, and i just can't bring myself to. and that's NEVER happened to me before. I have Skyrim to console me

Well I guess I am fortunate to not have that problem. Not at all.

Anyone who has participated in Beta in fair amount and still can't tell difference between WAR beta and SWTOR beta and how it is going to hold itself after launch well then nothing can change your mind.
By the way WAR's major problems were bugs and lack of stability, constant crashes and poor support. You are seriously telling me that SWTOR is going down the same road?

No, as I've said many times in the past, this game won't be for everyone. If you are burned out from standard themepark MMOs, you won't enjoy this game. If you are a powergamer who doesn't care about actual storylines and rushing to the end of the game, you won't enjoy this game. If you are a sandbox player or an SWG exile, chances are you won't enjoy this game.
But millions will. And comparing this game to Warhammer is about the worst comparison someone can make. I'm not even going to go into the multitude of reasons why that comparison is nonsensical, but needless to say, I laugh every time I see someone silly enough to make that comparison.
Again, my opinions, but check back with me six months after release and we should have a better idea of how those opinions are working out for me.

Try playing it before making assumptions. It will be the best MMO on the market the moment it is released.
Yea the videos dont really do it justice. I was only mildly impressed by the videos. Just wait once you get to play youll understand :-)
ease down, WOW is not gonna die because of SWTOR.....you are safe.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
Story was an integral part of both Daoc and EQ2, in SWTOR it is just more interactive.
Teehee, some people will go to the ends of the earth to try and prove they are correct!
I have played it and I disagree.
I will speak slowly in case you have trouble understanding... b e c a u s e i t ' s S T A R W A R S ! ! !

So was star wars galaxies. A strong IP alone can not save or make a game.

/facepalm
Because I still enjoy video games.
