Played with both common trageting systems extensively; I can't really say there's a huge difference either way.
I think fans of certain games :cough: just tend to hype the One True Way of their favorite, as far as targeting goes.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
I've seen many video's of this game.. but don't see any new things in it..
I know what you mean - I went to this place called a "library" once, and I was like "who the hell would come here, just look at how stupid the covers of these books are lulz!?"
You know how the saying goes... You can always judge a book by its cover.
Played with both common trageting systems extensively; I can't really say there's a huge difference either way.
I'm as big of a FPS fanatic as I am Star Wars geek, but I much prefer the SWTOR targeting over "aim" targeting for MMOs.
The lag that you get in EVERY "aim" based game makes the difference between living and dying...and most aim based games have 2 options - shoot or throw grenade vs. SWTOR's plethora of combat attacks.
hmm i know that shooters are way longer then mmorpg..
but ain't we talking about mmmorpg? and yes planet side is more a shooter with mmorpg elements..
from what i read here on this forum that basicly people are getting dissapointed over and over again when a new mmorpg with tab target is being released..
i think we can take the last sentence as a fact..
You mention aim based, and how it's something special as a combat mechanic and that people might get bored after having used tab targeting for such a long time. I mentioned that aim based targeting has been around even longer so if it's boredom because of having done a mechanic for so long, that definitely applies to aim based targeting as well.
As for using this site as baseline: this site is notorious for having an extraordinary amount of MMO homeless and drifters, the jaded, the burnt out, the people who're unable to enjoy an MMORPG anymore or who can barely find an MMO to fit their taste or who're even on the verge of leaving MMO's behind. Of course you'll find a lot of people here that have a problem with this or that MMO mechanic.
But what we can take as fact is this: some people have burnt themselves out on certain MMO features and are searching for something that can fuel their MMO gaming fun again.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
I've seen many video's of this game.. but don't see any new things in it..
Why are people so excited of this game? to me its just an tab target quest from a to b game?
I predict this game will end up the same as rift..
Judging a game just on a video and starting a thread about it just isn't fair.
As for new things, that doesn't neccesarily matter, Wow didn't have much new things at launch either, all the basic features were the same as in many other games and it still sold better than anything.
As for Rift it have done pretty fine compared to most other games, but TOR have already sold 3 times as many copies and it is a month from release yet, so at least initially are you wrong. Rift could of course have done better
I can't say that I know ho TOR will do myself or anything, and I am doubtful that it will get more players than GW2 but anything is possible. Fun is as important as innovative.
I agree with your post in how you're trying to make your point, in fact that's the kind of discussion I personally like: people who can like or dislike a game, have their opinion about it, but are sensible enough to acknowledge that other people might have different views and tastes than they themselves have, and be able to discuss it without falling into black&white extremes in argumenting.
As for the arguments, I didn't feel like reading back the whole former discussion, but wanted to focus on the points you mentioned here. I don't see what the level of hype had anything to do with how a game ends up to be. For example, GW2 is hyped even more with a lot of its fans bordering on almost religious zealot fervor of adoration towards the game who don't want to hear anything negative about 'their' game. Does this mean that GW2 won't do well? I beg to differ.
I never said that a hyped game wouldn't do well or that it couldn't be a quality game. I do think that you can make a comparison about the amount of hype that both games (WAR and TOR) have generated and the way that people react to the hype. The hype to me has very little to do with the quality of the game. It speaks volumes about the people on both sides though. How many times have you read the same "wow killer" posts on these forums? How many times has someone posted an article where the author did not have flattering things to say about a hyped game and all of the fanboys attacked him? Hype and blind devotion is just pointless. Lets judge a game on its merits after it has been out for awhile and the shiney newness has worn off. People who have never played the game attack and defend it and all they have done is watch a few videos.
In fact, I think that forum hype or prerelease hype has very little actual correlation with the quality of a game, how it'll end up to be. If you'd go back far enough, I'm sure there'll be a lot of the same hyped up posts about WoW and LotrO too, yet they turned out to be quite good with healthy retention.
I agree.
Which brings us to the next point: you believe that SWTOR doesn't have much long term appeal, which is an opinion, fair enough. Personally, I think SWTOR comes a hell of a lot closer to WoW and LotrO in quality level and longterm retention: if those games were able to retain players for a longer term, then I don't see why SWTOR doesn't have a good, solid chance as well.
I wish I could explain why I think the way I do but with the NDA in place there isn't anything I could really say. If I was going to make a predicition though I would say it will be closer to LotrO in terms of long term retention than it is WoW. Thats not a bad thing. Really only time will tell. I don't have a crystal ball so I could be wrong.
Tab target.. fine by me.. but common.. does it require skill to press a button?
Every mmo which comes out have this tab target system.. which is basicly outdated..
1: see a mob
2: press Tab
3: press 3
i really don't see fun in this.. you stand infront of another person or mob and do this is cycle..
I love FPS games too, but really all they boil down to is "click on enemies to defeat them".
Of course, in real life there's more to it than that, just as there's more to tab-target combat systems. Both only work if you're willing and able to immerse yourself in the game world enough to get past the raw mechanics of what you're actually doing.

I really hope it does since Rift is one of the most successful MMO in recent years after strings of failed launches. However, i am 100% certain that it will do even better than Rift.
another wow clone that falls to the side of the road ? because, at the end of the day, thats what RIFT will be remembered for.
I dunno... maybe people bother with the game because its a lot of fun? I know that's why I play it.
The better question is: why do people bother with constantly posting negativity threads about a game they have no interest in playing? Seems pretty pointless to me.

so? normal nowadays everyone and their pet takes a look then leaves. rest sticks.
every new game gets that treatment. if the remaining 40% is well above the cost you have a good deal.
1st month is always the horror for the server admins to get the servers stable under 'above normal' stress , then after 1st month it evens out anyway.
I even would say you make a few more servers for the inital rush but just rent em for some time to merge servers after it settled down.
Two things:
1. Ttry it before you reach an opinion, the videos do not do it justice.
2. I've played the game, and it's fun as hell.

basicly this thread was started before SWOTR was released..
I didn't expected that so many people replied on this.. but every one is posting his oponion in this thread is and its kinda fun to read..
Just wondering of the people who are playing SWOTR.. and posted in this thread.. have changed there opinions about the game.?
And if so.. why are your changing your opinion? what did you expect and what is dissapoiting/amazing?
Not an ounce. If nothing else, I'm enjoying it more, since I understand class skills and the trees more now, than when I last posted in this thread.

haha you've obviously not played it. I felt the same way from watching short youtube clips. When I played it, I realized why.
