I don't know whether I should single out the fact that you've said "usually", or "normal people".

Where have you been? This is not targeted solely at SWTOR. Nearly, if not every, MMO that has come out in the last few years has been critically flamed. SWTOR is actually fairing better than most others. AoC was bashed terribly, terribly. Warhammer was panned. Rift was ...eh. Aion went through the same story.

Honestly, and I mean no disrespect in this, but were you just not around/paying attention? Also, people are rather irrational. You get used to it.

Most the time people just say there waiting for 2012 and what comes with it which we all know what game that is.  Also people say they dont want to play another clone, thats a big one.  I Really dont get it, this mmo adds so many new and exciting things to the table, it doesnt have to be ground breaking.  They dont see my way of thinking though and i havent convinced any of these people that SWTOR is a great game.

The biggest thing is why are people so hell bent on there opinion, there is no changing there minds.  Usually normal people when they converse with others especially people that your having a good time with online will take someones opinion with a bit of integrity but not over TOR, there so adamant and stuborn about it not being worth there time that it makes me think there is something going on here more then meets the eye. Yeah it adds story, but that's just one feature like RIFT added rifts.  It's a nice new thing but ultimately it's still a generic theme park mmo underneath.

This is horribly disingenuous . Story, and by this we mean compelling story, is not just another game feature to be checked off along with things like rifts or skill-based levelling or pretty hats. It is fundamental to human nature to enjoy being told a good story. The enjoyment of it is timeless and limitless. You are going to watch movies you haven't seen and read books you haven't read and your enjoyment of them will not be hindered by the number movies and books that have entertained you previously and the neverending enjoyment derived from a good story is why. Neither you nor any human will ever get their fill of good stories. The enjoyment of a good story doesn't go away. The ability of a game to engage palyers with good stories is FAR more impactful than a relatively trivial mechanic like rifts. If the enjoyment of rifts wanes for even one player it will be one more than the number of humans who will ever grow tired of good stories. I think it's fair to say that the enjoyment of rifts will wane for at least one player.

When you log on to an MMO and talk about another, its like talking highly about a rival team right in their favorite sports bar..

its an unwritten rule, a no no..

This is especially with MMO's that have years under their belt, where time has weeded out most and majority of the games population are die hard fans.

id agree if this was single player game but for an MMO gameplay>story.. in an MMO you want subscribers, long term subscribers. The main storys are good so far from what I've experienced the rest of the side quests are pretty so so overall. But you get through the couple main storys you are left with a generic MMO with nothing to do than what has been done over the last decade. Gear grind in raids or pvp, craft, and thats about it. This has worked for awhile now but I just don't see it holding people for the long haul like it has in the past and not with a slew of new games coming.

BW has been very honest about what sort of mmorpg this was going to be. If you expected something different, you deserve no less.

Edit: Only issue I had is that their campaign was built to be so strong in a way that could allow people a lot of time to create false expectations.

Ummm the interwebs don't like WOW/Blizzard,Microsoft, or anything related to EA.  My normal inclination is to ignore anything negative I read on here and find out about it myself and I suspect many others have come to similar conclusions.

    It's easy...

The game is disappointing to a LOT of people.  They expected more out of a Bioware release.

Don't you think it's more likely that those who were interested in playing SWTOR are already playing it?  It makes sense that those who chose not to play it would not be giving it a warm reception.  Pre-order numbers alone tell us that TONS of people are excited for it.

If i were to put it simply, people were expecting this game to be the next MMO king. However un the end this game just became a step forward to push into the next era of MMORPG.

    Because i can.

Anyone calling this a clone has minimal MMO experience and definately has not played SWTOR. WOW if anything was a clone of EQ and EQ of Ultima Online. You can continue to say this over and over again. Its a pathetic argument and shows peoples lack of knowledge when it comes to these games.

The kicker in all this is. Those people trying to spread the hate and dislike. I have a simple resolution for them....dont play it. Its not mandatory to play.

Maybe for you, but me? Sorry, have to disagree. At least rifts had an impact on the gameplay, so I'd choose something like rifts over story, without hesitation. Maybe thats why so many MMO haven't emphasised story the way TOR has. Not everyone agrees that its such a major thing, certainly not more important than skill-based leveling or pretty hats.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

it is for a star wars fan boy and MMO addict like myself.. either way what aside from the main story and dialog is so differn't from anything else released in the last decade?

OMG Lightsabers!!  really though, i bought the game because i have been F2P hopping for the last 3 months. im bored, and this game has lightsabers, what more could i need?

Really it just comes down to what do you like? is ToR for you?  if you like anything about the games story, game mechanics, concepts, community, or even the graphics, what is it you're missing out on by trying it?  besides the 60 bucks to get started.

You can say that about any themepark MMO of the last decade.  C'mon, you're playing the game.  Does it actually feel like WoW to you?  Story-driven flashpoints, variety in PvP, a completely new spin on crafting that has never been done before, the companion system, decision making as part of the storyline, the modding system, bringing back world bosses, heroic zones on every planet, tab-target combat that is actually, dare I say, fun, etc.

Sure, some of those things have been done here and there, but no game in the last decade has combined them all like TOR has, or taken them to the extreme that TOR has.

Jesus, you guys will continue to trip over yourselves to make sure you don't give Bioware the least bit of credit for making a damn fun game.  It's unbelievable.  How anyone can deny that this game does, in fact, bring some nice new shiny things to the table is beyond me.  And even if you are too stubborn to admit that, then you have to at least concede that they brought quite a bit of rarely seen things to the table and packaged them all together nicely to create a fun game, don't you?

I haven't played wow in years but I play MMOs a lot and yes everything aside from the story feels like same old been there to me.. Not saying its not worth playing espeically for star wars fans and fans of bioware games.. But I get annoyed when people make claims like its the best game ever made and how many great new and innovated ideas it has. Also to say taken to the extreme makes me LOL sorry aside from the story nothing here is taken to the extreme

That is nothing.  Go to an MMO other than WoW and ask them about WoW.  Now THAT is some hate.  lol

i think people were complaining about it because they mistakenly took their own ideal MMO in their mind and decided that's what SWTOR was gonna be.  When in reality it was gonna be something else, or rather, someone else's ideal MMO.  which it is, to many people.

not to me, but it's good enough to take one of my 2 MMO "inventory slots" for now.  I'm not complaining on the forums (this isnt complaining is it?  i don't think it is) because i didnt have unrealistic expectations for the game; i just thought it would be a fun way to spend some time until iron chef is on ^^

SWTOR is nothing like Warhammer.  Nothing at all.  The biggest problem SWTOR will have is that there's too much to do, people might be overwhelmed.  Warhammer's content is about 15% of what this game has.

This isn't from some fanboy.  I actually didn't even plan on buying the game until Beta.  Now after Early Access and I've seen a bit more of the game and the aspects of it, I can confidently say this game is going to be huge.

I loved Rift.  I like Trion Worlds a lot, but damn if this game didn't steal my soul for now.  It's worthy of its praise.

I enjoyd KOTOR games and this plays quite similar so I bought it. I only see it as a solo experience with grouping once in a while. As a new mmorpg is is pretty fail.

    This

I will play SWTOR as I quite WoW bout 1/2 a year ago and with GW2 so far off I need to scratch my MMO itch which is what SWTOR will be.  There is nothing innovative or special about SWTOR but will be a solid enough game.   People chalk up the whole convo's and VO up so much to the point that it's the only major perk over the other MMOs, sry but that is a single RPG mechanic and not ideally for an MMO.

my post wasn't about the game at all just people said very similar things about warhammer prior to its release.. thats all.. hell I remember people going crazy saying ffXIV was going to be the next big thing for so long...

Maybe because if people wanted to get it and play it, most of them would of pre-ordered it and been playing it, instead of whatever game you are talking about it in....Any MMO I have ever played, people generally don't respond well to people 'advertising' for another game....Especially one that has a lower population as it is, people take it as an assault on their game (that they plan to stay with, and damn sure don't want some guy talking up their rival and stealing subs).

So it's not swtor, its mmos in general, it's like going to a country you are at war with and talking up the country they are fighting against and asking them to consider the virtues of switching loyalties.

Just a fyi, I am playing swtor, and yes I am very interested in GW2.....If swtor keeps me happy, I will play both...I am getting GW2 no matter how much I like swtor....I also am keeping my eye on TSW.
