The game is disappointing to a LOT of people. They expected more out of a Bioware release.
Don't you think it's more likely that those who were interested in playing SWTOR are already playing it? It makes sense that those who chose not to play it would not be giving it a warm reception. Pre-order numbers alone tell us that TONS of people are excited for it.
Nobody is disputing the popularity of the Star Wars IP or the previous quality of Bioware games.

Haters are gonna hate and Fanboys are gonna... ...I don't know be fanatical in their unadulterated infatuation for the "Star Wars" IP.
Personally I can take or leave (prefavorably leave) the Star Wars culture/phenomenon. I think at it's inception it was pretty cool and unique, but as it progressed, it was just another money grubbing congolerate run by and written by indviduals who would let their 8 year old children make decisions and deem what is "cool" and what isn't (Ewoks? really? And lol, Jar-Jar Binks, wow)
Now I know you fanatics will say something along the lines of "that's not the real Star Wars". But you can't deny, it is what it is.
The hype and bombastic forum rhetoric this game has rolled-out is amazing to me. But hey, far be it from me to step upon anyones altruistic toes. But for crying out loud relax people, relax...

well you gotta consider MMOs for a many people borderline on addiction status and star wars is a huge universe, and to create a game from with an enormous fan base are you really that suprised how people act or react? I mean people go crazy about run of the mill F2P MMOs.
There is negativity because it prercisely is a carbon copy of core gameplay mechanics from the WoW formula with absolutely terrible pvp.
The only thing new it adds are conversations which are actually annoying when you have to listen to someone rample on for several minutes for a minor quest.
I enjoyd KOTOR games and this plays quite similar so I bought it. I only see it as a solo experience with grouping once in a while. As a new mmorpg is is pretty fail.
This
I will play SWTOR as I quite WoW bout 1/2 a year ago and with GW2 so far off I need to scratch my MMO itch which is what SWTOR will be. There is nothing innovative or special about SWTOR but will be a solid enough game. People chalk up the whole convo's and VO up so much to the point that it's the only major perk over the other MMOs, sry but that is a single RPG mechanic and not ideally for an MMO.
Both of these.
I played KOTOR 1&2 and, while the gametype was pretty cool, I kind of feel like I'm playing KOTOR 3 except that its online. What MMO means is that, on missions, you have to wade through mobs, come back, wade through the same group again.
I'm looking for something new and different. I tried DCUO and that was different but not my cup of tea. I tried World of Tanks and I still play that half of the time. I just need something to fit the other half of my time. I have one more day to decide whether to pick up or leave the Swtor pre-order. Should I be asking myself that question this early in the game?
The game is disappointing to a LOT of people. They expected more out of a Bioware release.

So, you could defend STO by saying BioWare was behind it? I didn't think so.
And STO didn't have anywhere near the hype, or the pre-orders. And it sucked.
Every time I bring up the game to anyone in chat anywhere on the net but mostly in other mmos asking if people are getting there copys tomarrow all I really get are everyones dislike for the game. What the heck gives, where does this all come from. I bet the game is missing out on alot of potential customers from all this bad publicity everyone seems to be shrowded in.
Most the time people just say there waiting for 2012 and what comes with it which we all know what game that is. Also people say they dont want to play another clone, thats a big one. I Really dont get it, this mmo adds so many new and exciting things to the table, it doesnt have to be ground breaking. They dont see my way of thinking though and i havent convinced any of these people that SWTOR is a great game.
The biggest thing is why are people so hell bent on there opinion, there is no changing there minds. Usually normal people when they converse with others especially people that your having a good time with online will take someones opinion with a bit of integrity but not over TOR, there so adamant and stuborn about it not being worth there time that it makes me think there is something going on here more then meets the eye. Whats your take on the situation as the game launches?
I don't think that it's so much they would hate the game based off of what it is, and more likely that they are inclined to disapprove of competition that may take players away from "their" population.
Nobody wants their community to collapse around them when a big release is impending, but that's the way of the industry.

Yeah it adds story, but that's just one feature like RIFT added rifts. It's a nice new thing but ultimately it's still a generic theme park mmo underneath.
This is horribly disingenuous . Story, and by this we mean compelling story, is not just another game feature to be checked off along with things like rifts or skill-based levelling or pretty hats. It is fundamental to human nature to enjoy being told a good story. The enjoyment of it is timeless and limitless. You are going to watch movies you haven't seen and read books you haven't read and your enjoyment of them will not be hindered by the number movies and books that have entertained you previously and the neverending enjoyment derived from a good story is why. Neither you nor any human will ever get their fill of good stories. The enjoyment of a good story doesn't go away. The ability of a game to engage palyers with good stories is FAR more impactful than a relatively trivial mechanic like rifts. If the enjoyment of rifts wanes for even one player it will be one more than the number of humans who will ever grow tired of good stories. I think it's fair to say that the enjoyment of rifts will wane for at least one player.
Maybe for you, but me? Sorry, have to disagree. At least Rifts had an impact on the gameplay, so I'd choose something like rifts over story, without hesitation. Maybe thats why so many MMO haven't emphasised story the way TOR has. Not everyone agrees that its such a major thing, certainly not more important than skill-based leveling or pretty hats. Ok, maybe not pretty hats, so much. but you get the idea.
Story is HUGE, especially for people like myself who loves games llike Dragon age, Baldurs gate shadows of amin, fallout 3, me , me2, to the moon, kotar, Vampire Masqurade, etc, they give a special ooomph and immersion to the treadmill and make it come alive
here is what i know. Im having me a blast playing tor. What game are the haters playing right now and enjoying? none they are either waiting for the next grea sandbox they wont ever play while they whine no one makes sandbox games, or waitiong on gw 2 which when it coms out they will flame
Why cause its not gonna totally reinvent mmos. its gonna do some things tera and rift beat them to and get rid of trinity while using story aka tor in its single player story
they arent changing how quests work either. So in the end im having fun playing a game and t hose that love tor are having fun playing a game and those that dont like it well most of them on this forum arent having fun playing any game.

You don't write like you are 28, which tells me you are probably one of those kids that were the 12 year olds on the alliance. Inexperienced, raw, a rpg virgin. And honestly, the people who are so hell bent on their opinion about this game is because they were probably uber excited about it at the start, but once EA bought out BioWare they realized the epic failures that EA was introducing into the game. I was paying attention to the game more than any other prior, going to the website everyday and searching on Bing News; I was stoked. That was over a year ago. I played almost all the Star Wars games and am an engineering student now. I pride myself in my nerdiness. But...EA crushed the hopes of an awesome si-fi mmorpg. They ruined it and that made me made, stubborn, cold hearted (lol). So yeah, SWTOR is gonna be a big disappointment to the Star Wars name, legacy, and George Lucas. After you play your first few weeks, come back and tell everyone what you love so much about it, and I will tell everyone why it is just...horrid.

Personally, I'm not going to pay for SW:TOR, and neither are my friends. Our main reasons are: zero freedom (at least early in the game), being handled everywhere, absolutely no feel of playing an MMO, and a few others.
And we're not changing our minds. Why is that so bad? That somenoe who tries to convince us we're wrong, and that we "have" to play this game, isn't convincing us? Sorry, but we did try the game, and no random guy appearing in other games advertising for SW:TOR is going to coinvince us that our opinions are wrong.
Btw, I have also seen a lot of talk about this game in other mmos. But I cannot agree that everyone dislikes it. My experience is that there's quite a lot of people on both sides of the fence.

Did you ever consider that other mmorpg sites dont want to talk about SWTOR? Maybe if they wanted to talk about SWTOR they would play SWTOR or go to the SWTOR forums or official forums to talk about it. I ask myself why SWTOR fans feel the need to start aggrevating SWTOR topics on everyone elses forums, especially the GW2 and WOW forums in which they have pretty much invaded. Even the offical WOW forums has multiple SWTOR posts in multiple forums areas, even the WOW ARENAS forum area has TOR topics, seriously these Star Wars posts are more aggrevating than the Mormons who go door to door.

im a huge tor fan and even i think this is a bad idea. Why would people talk about tor on a wow or rift, or eve site. it makes no sense to me
Why go antagonize people if u got to a wow forum, rift, gw2 or any other game it should be to talk about that game not some other game
Sites like mmorpg give u ample time to talk about multiple mmos , so why go antagonize fans from other games.
When I go to a church and ask people what they think about atheistism I get a negative response... What gives... I don't understand.
That strongly depends on which church you visit. If you visit a church in Northern Europe, I would expect mostly neutral opinions and very few straight-out negative ones.

Because MMORPGs is the only game genre in existence so there is absolutely no other game out there? Furthermore, GW2 just needs to feel very different from WoW to make me want to at least give it a chance; their dynamic system sounds far more elaborative than Rift's and it will be interesting to test it thoroughly.
Futhermore, "disliking" is not equivalent with "hating".
People interested in playing SWTOR are probably already playing in the early access. Going into another MMORPG and asking who plans on playing is probably a bad idea, answer there is very likely to be almost no one.
As someone stated, if people are already playing an MMO and happy with it, not likely they'll be switching any time soon, and no the IP alone doesn't justify it.
Of course fans keep bringing up the "great" story angle, and how people like being told a good story. Me? I prefer to create my own great story which is why I play MMO's to begin with, so the idea of a game telling me a story just doesn't have a strong appeal which is why I'm sitting it out so far.

1.) Your bothering people about a game on ANOTHER game. People are playing the game because they like it. They would be in ToR if they wanted to play that.
2.) There are very legitament issues with ToR. People dislike it because there are things to dislike. As much as people praise tor, they will often so do it in such a way that you think its some golden trophy rather then a brass one. This MAKES people turn into 'haters' quickly to blind fans.
3.) Your going on and on about a game that NO ONE CARES about. Its been talked to the point where most would rather deafen themselves or blind themselves rather then listen to the same fan gasms over and over. I heard the first time, "Bioware" and "Starwars" yadda yada, At least if your going to talk about an over discussed topic, make it something useful rather then pointless banter. What makes it worst is people trying to claim its the greatest game ever without even having proof to back that up.

The 3 million who will be playing tomorrow are not likely to notice you not being there.
That strongly depends on which church you visit. If you visit a church in Northern Europe, I would expect mostly neutral opinions and very few straight-out negative ones.
Kids will be kids; I mean that rhetorically of course. It's just the way of things, the invasion, the retaliation,etc...; at least it's amusing from time to time.
