I think most people around here already have it correct. MMO fans in general aren't an impartial bunch, just like sports fans, and nor should they be. I don't care if the Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks to win the Stanley Cup, the Canucks are MY TEAM. If you come to the Canucks forum asking why we're not all Bruins fans yet despite having proven that they're obviously superior, you'll get torn to shreds. Same thing with MMOs. MMO players tend to label this sort of behavior is "fanboyism." While it's not an unfair description, it's also plain ole' human nature.
To be fair, there's a lot of different metrics by which you can measure quality. Same games do some things better than other games, while other games are superior in different aspects. That's the joy of having so many games on the market, you'll generally be able to find something that caters to your taste.
Speaking for myself, I would still be playing Neocron if there were other people still playing it. Does it have an absolutely godawful questing system, boring PvE and more bugs than you can shake a stick at? You betcha. It also has the best PvP I've ever experienced. Alas, strong PvP wasn't enough to hold the interest of its playerbase, and so it hemmorhaged until there was practically no one left, and unfortunately PvP depends on having other people to play against. Such is life.
The next game I went for was World of Warcraft. In all honesty though, I didn't actually *truly* enjoy it until Wrath of the Lich King. I only achieved level 60 about a week before TBC launched, and similarly only achieved level 70 a week before WotLK hit the shelves. I hit 80 a LOT sooner. What changed? The storytelling, that's what. They finally managed to integrate the strong story elements from Warcraft 3 and expand on it. Alas, I burned through Cataclysm's leveling content in a mere 2 days, and then quit shortly therafter. This happened for two reasons: 1) the storytelling reverted to pre-WotLK quality, and 2) the end game content available after release was absolutely awful.
Next came Aion. I've tended to play Aion in brief spurts ever since it launched. I enjoy the combat mechanics but the story doesn't grab me in any way, even though it's reasonably well written. It's less a question of quality, and just more the fact that I simply didn't connect with it. Still, I haven't abandoned it completely.
Finally, I've also played a bit of Star Trek Online. Now understand, I am a lifelong trekkie. I literally got to level 8 and said "THIS EFFING SUCKS." The space combat was literally the only thing that was mildly interesting about it. The story was bad, as was most of the gameplay.
I guess what I'm getting at is, for me personally, the storytelling is what compels me to play certain games, and so long as the core gameplay is solid, the story is what drives my enjoyment. And based on what I've seen thus far (for the record, I haven't played it, but I've watched plenty of gameplay videos), SWTOR looks like exactly the kind of game I'll enjoy.
I'm not such a fool that I believe everyone else should feel that way as well.
...
I really don't know what the point of this post was. Oh well!
Every time I bring up the game to anyone in chat anywhere on the net but mostly in other mmos asking if people are getting there copys tomarrow all I really get are everyones dislike for the game. What the heck gives, where does this all come from. I bet the game is missing out on alot of potential customers from all this bad publicity everyone seems to be shrowded in.
Most the time people just say there waiting for 2012 and what comes with it which we all know what game that is. Also people say they dont want to play another clone, thats a big one. I Really dont get it, this mmo adds so many new and exciting things to the table, it doesnt have to be ground breaking. They dont see my way of thinking though and i havent convinced any of these people that SWTOR is a great game.
The biggest thing is why are people so hell bent on there opinion, there is no changing there minds. Usually normal people when they converse with others especially people that your having a good time with online will take someones opinion with a bit of integrity but not over TOR, there so adamant and stuborn about it not being worth there time that it makes me think there is something going on here more then meets the eye. Whats your take on the situation as the game launches?
A better question is: "Why are YOU so hellbent on thinking everyone MUST like this game?". Face it, if people don't like a certain game, they have every right to say what they want about the game, whether you agree or not, it simply DOES NOT MATTER.
I understand you thorougly enjoy SWTOR, others (myself included) do not sadly. Also, as stated before, perhaps people simply don't like it? That doesn't mean the game is bad, and in reality it's really just a small percentage that actually dislike the game. SWTOR is good and it's solid, however it's only problem is that it is just not what people were expecting.
I just don't like how you feel that people should not hate SWTOR. You also need to understand, you simply can not change someone else's opinion.
Let's say that, you do not like WoW and simply do not want to play it, yet some bozo on the internet is constantly telling you, "WOW IS GREAT?! WHY U NO LOVE WOW?" then they get offended when you say you don't want to play WoW because you don't like it, then internet bozo feels he has to go on MMORPG.com and start a thread about why he doesn't understand why people don't love SWTOR as much as he does. Yea...
Most of the hate I have seen comes from people who have not even tried it out, or say they have a weekend beta in it. Those same people have no intention of buying it and spew outright lies and rumors about what's actually in-game.
I went down to my local Gamestop to pick up my copy at midnight and the place was packed, the game has server levels I haven't seen since Warcraft launched, and guildies I haven't seen in 5 years are piled up in-game all playing happily.
My advice is if you're interested at all give it a try, if you're not then don't, but dont rely on shills from other games to shoot you straight.
So you are mad, because other people aren't interested in talking about SWTOR in another game? What a shock...
How would you feel if someone would come to SWTOR and simple talk about how great the next upcoming game will be and ask questions surrounding it? Not very happy and likely you would tell them, if game (insert here) is that great, go join the beta or wait till the release.
Positively surprised people in this thread already gave the right answers, those who like that sort of game already bought it, other who don't happily enjoy their game. Not everyone has to like every game right?
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."

The thing is a lot of people are bored of wow clones and want somthing different, the last SWG was a lto different from standard MMOS and I think thats what a lot of people where hoping for, but sadly thats not what they got..
I would also think that most people who like the game pre-ordered and are proball already in game or waiting to get in game.
The game was really a big let down for me and i really dont think its workth the £40 price tag they have slapped on it.
Saying that im sure millions will love the game...

Given analysts think up to 1.5 million have been playing in early access and the likly hood that will double over the next couple of days its patently obvious people like familiarity and arn't bored with standard fantasy style mmos ( I won't say WoW clone because WoW itself borrowed a lot of ideas from the mmos befor it and in itself is a clone to some degree ) .
The reason you get negativity in other games is fear of losing subs to another game pure and simple . I.m playing three mmos at the moment WoW( ten day welcome back ) lotro (lifer) and Rift ( subscribed to ) heres the responces I'm seeing and effects on the games .
WoW - a lot of negativity but also a lot of possitivity from people who are saying how good the game is or are going to try it . The drop in players isn't overly noticable but theres a whole lot more low and medium servers than there were .
Lotro - its a more mature crowd so its just general discussion about the game . No real noticable drop in players at all .
Rift -people are discussing the game and while there some negativity there a lot more interest in asking what its like and I may try it comments . The drop in player numbers is very noticable sadly . Waits for Warfronts have suddenly become longer .
I think what we can garner from this is WoW will lose a lot of players to ToR but it wont be that noticable for those that stay in the game because of its cross server nature . Lotro and free to play games will continue to do well because they have a different style of buisness model and unfortunatly the remaining subscription games like Rift and Warhammer will be hit hardest .
I like Rift I'm sorry to see the drop in numbers but in the same breath I'm glad to see WoW with some real competition for the first time . It will be good for WoW players because Blizzard will have to look to thier laurels and how to improve the game .

I would like to point out that there are many people who have played mmos for a decade or so easily, me being 1 of them, and as such i can truthfully say that the amount of stats players can raise, character creation customization, armor/weapon choice and so on have only been dumbed down and dumbed down and dumbed down over the past decade. These being games with 4 or so basic stats a player can raise, 6-8 faces/bodies/etc a person can choicec from and class locked gear/gender locked classes (stupidest idea ever by far).
Anyways, where I'm getting is also just my opinion but my opinion based on a decades worth of mmo experience and other genres, which i wont comment on atm because i find it less relevent, but this game dissapointed me, just like most other mmo's over the past 4-5 years. I can see this game lasting a little longer than recent mmo's because of the star wars fanboy's and some who want to try and finish the stories, but altogether i do not see it making it far. I could give a lot of opinionated comments and I'm sure most of them are influenced on how much I have seen every single feature this game has to offer in other mmos out there, so I'll just say a few things.
This game had me bored at how uncustomizable my character was, at how much grinding or doing side quests made little to no difference in character xp, a the astonishing 0 stats raisable upon leveling, not to mention the oh so.....STUPID....the skill system is altogether, and oh so many more.
To sum it all up, I was bored, unimpressed and dissappointed. I really had my hopes on this game for the next half year to a year.
Every MMO that comes out is hated, from Rift and Aion, to Darkfall and Mortal. You will NEVER find a majority who will openly say, "yea that looks interesting, I'm going to check it out". Hating on new MMOs is trendy, and part of a mob mentality, part of fitting in, bla bla bla.
Most players hate to loose their games. Once they work their toons on an MMO plataform they hate the new game and the people who enjoy the new game.
This game is awsome and haters just can't stand reality, a game like WoW 7yr old will loose some folks to the new game and they hate it. Many MMO comunities don't c their games for what they really are because they enjoy the game, well good for them but don't trash the new game because of it.
And for all out there that say this is a clone for this or that, all cars have weels and that's how they work because it works. why re-invent something that don't need to be re-invented.

Ooh, excellent analogy choice, I've been waiting for water powered, self driving, flying cars most of my life, yet the car manufacturers keep providing the same basic model that's been available since, oh, 1900 or so. (and they're even sort of dumbed down today, none really compare to the muscle cars of the 60's, emission controls and all that)
While they face some significant challenges to create such innovation in automobiles, not so much with MMOPRG's, they're boring and repetitive by intent more than need. We have the technology to create better games, but Dev's chose not to because they're more concerned about making money than taking a chance on innovation.
SWTOR is most definitely a "better" standard theme park MMORPG, the thing is, not all theme parks need to be the same, but sadly most are.

Well in Warhammer:Wrath of Heroes along Iv asked in chat over the weekend beta probably a few dozen times if people are getting there copys of SWTOR on the 20th, every time I say that, theres a group of people different most time that are all spouting out "clones this and and GW2 that" lol! and its just not a good game and bla bla bla...
IF found maybee 1 person in the entire weekend and over a few undread people I talked to that is geting the game or playing it. I find it funny so many people can know about a game yet have resentment towards it and hstility.
Some people didnt know at all even what SWTOR was, and there playing mmos at the same time. I dont see how you could play an mmo and not know what TOR is.
well i dont think its resentment about the game..they maybe played beta and didnt like it..i for one was kind of impressed with the voice over stuff..its really well done.but apart from that..it didnt seem to me to be anything really different..what i mean by that is,remove the voice overs and what do you have..but that is only based on what i seen in beta..it maybe totally different altogether.i was tempted to buy it,but when all said and done,i'm glad i didnt.

I think that is an awesome argument kyleran and really compares to some of the vets today ( I am an mmo vet but I tend to think I am not like this ) when they cant accept that somethings are the same but tweaked to the current times in the same way a guy that used to drive around in a muscle car with no emission controls cant accept that it has been tweaked because in this day and age we are aware of the environment and realize that if we screw it we die.
The same way WoW and others have picked up features from the so called old school good mmo's and tweaked for team park and most vet's cant just accept it cause the good old days were good .
This ofc doesnt mean we wont have flying cars, I would compare this to maybe being able to being plugged to a game somehow, cause lets face it MMOs are still the same medium, I install it on a computer and play with mouse a keyboard that alone to me is already backwards.

Wouldnt it be nice to have a flying car like in the Jetsons cartoon or maybe the Star Wars movies? Yes, cars still have wheels but I think they have changed a bit since the Model A. MMO's have been using the same theme for close to 10 years now. Its time for a change.
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.
MMO are becoming like sports teams. you know the kind where grown men jump around the living room acting like retards and chanting strange stuff about how the opposing team sucks ass and their team is the best. same for online games. mention TOR in any of the other MMOs forums is like me going in to a chicago bears sports bar and cheering for the packers to win. If i'm lucky i might walk out partially alive.

I guess people just don't like the game for a number of possible reasons or they don't like it and are misinformed. Take a look around mmorgp.com alone and you'll see so much ignorance that really hurts this game and others aswell. People call SWTOR WoW with lightsabres, which is imo one of the biggest compliments you can make on a mmo, but for many it is a huge letdown. People want the genre to revolutionize itself although it is not the way in the industry. Call of Duty reigns supreme over the shooter genre with rehashs, D3 and SC2 are clones of the originals with dull gameplay, and sports games in general have been stagnant for years.
I could go on, but the thing is, you won't get other people to play your game unless they are genuinly interested. I stopped convincing friends to play my games for that reason. Even if you could get them to test the game, they'll leave soon enough. Play the games you enjoy and stop caring about other people's preferences.
I don't agree with this at all. What themepark features are "massively cut back?" This game has every single important feature of any standard themepark game, and more than most of them at launch. There is a ton of stuff to do in this game.
So what's missing? Surely you aren't talking about minor shit like LFG (which shouldn't be in this game at launch anyway), UI customization (which will be added very shortly), or any of the other little things like sitting in chairs that people like to complain about just so they have a reason to hate the game.
So again...what's missing from a fully fleshed out MMO?
the "core" themepark features are all there its what I would call the "convienence" features(I'm not going to list them cause there are TONS but some examples are of course LFG tool, customizable UI, reactive indicator, ect) this game sorely lacks.. Rift is a good example of a game that took many of the best these type "convienence" features from many other MMOs and incorporated them to the game at launch.. now honestly I would have been fine if all these features were not there and they just expanded upon the basic themepark foundation. But they didn't even do that they gave us the same basic classes used forever with the same basic talent trees that do nothing but add a few abilities and improve abilites you already get from leveling(just like every other game that uses this system)
Everything else is your basic run of the mill themepark MMO flair. Same basic instanced dungeons, same instanced pvp warzones, same fetch, kill, find, destroy generic MMO quests we have seen for the last decade+(just with flashy VO)
So in essense nothing is "missing" from the game just nothing was really expanded upon at all and all that "convienence" stuff was left out.
Funny part... is if they added that stuff people would complain about it too... Oh LFG tool ruins communities and copies WoW bla bla bla easy mode blah blah. If I had a nickel for every whiny immature little twit on forums who **thinks** people are stupid because they like something they don't I'd be rich. You don't like SWTOR? Cool... but it doesn't make you smarter or a better MMO player or anything else... it just means you have a *gasp* opinion/.
Most people that really want to play TOR are already in thanks to early access, and the rest probably arent playing any other mmo's just a couple of days before launch.
That leave the people that dont want to play SWTOR and are bitter because all the population of their current game is moving over. These are therefore haters and will just say anything bad they can about the game. With all the fanboys already playing the game there is no one to counteract them....
Thats all it is

Essentially accurate. That's why "fanboy" is such a ludicrous expression to me, the built-in hypcrisy is just absurd.

To me is all about personal taste and let me elaborate. First of I'm a big Star Wars movie fan and I have the collection of all movies plus the extra dvds on the story and other info, but when it comes to mmorpg I only play them cause of the fantasy style they offer and I like games with swords and magic vs sci fi ones. In my mind the idea of playing with laser guns or shooting in general doesn't fit the mmorpg style. I play shooter games though for example CoD in which aiming is all about players skill and not the level and gear. If you get shot you die there is no rpg element on shooters for me personally. I just can't play a pew pew pew mmorpg period.

Well, I guess I might as well chime in.
Oh well!
Holy motherlurker!

SWTOR is most definitely a "better" standard theme park MMORPG, the thing is, not all theme parks need to be the same, but sadly most are.

well i dont think its resentment about the game..they maybe played beta and didnt like it..i for one was kind of impressed with the voice over stuff..its really well done.but apart from that..it didnt seem to me to be anything really different..what i mean by that is,remove the voice overs and what do you have..but that is only based on what i seen in beta..it maybe totally different altogether.i was tempted to buy it,but when all said and done,i'm glad i didnt.
Whenever you say something is bad about SWTOR people say "go back to WoW"...

I find this thread very funny. It would be like going into a Country Western bar and asking those people about how they feel about Rap music.
Essentially accurate. That's why "fanboy" is such a ludicrous expression to me, the built-in hypcrisy is just absurd.

A). Your questions generally threaten their security.
. People are allowed to have whatever opinion they like. As you are.
You clearly have not even tried to see it from the perspective of the other people.
And you expect them to see yours or bioware?
Come on now, you can't be that dense.
You had to mention CoD though?
That's pretty RPG like. You have your various perks attained at levels.
Now call me crazy but quite a few perks give higher levels supreme advantage.
Now lets talk about gun levels in CoD3.. Really?
But i digress.
