does anyone here build their own pc cases? if so, how hard is it and where could i get help building one? im not thinking of a conventional case, im thinking of something more... cool! but if thats too much to expect, i just want to know the process of building a typical case.
Satan, it can be difficult to build your on case or mod one and not. Just depends on how grand and unique you want to be. One can make a case from almost anything from pvc pipes to discarded junk metal to making your own acrylic mold for an acrylic case. I'm going to try my hand at making a case out of some high strength aluminum I've got laying around and some old car parts from the junk yard. Here are some sites that should help you out:
Other than the GFX card, whcih I already have, it's gonna cost me just under $600 for the whole kit and kaboodle. I'm stil holding on a sound card because I use headphones for TS and usually have game noises turned off.

I'm gonna look into that, Murt. Don't know too much about bay slot coolers, and I'm hoping they're not like PCI slot coolers. I need to cool my comp down, it's starting to run hot after a full day of gaming...and turning the computer off is NOT THE ANSWER DAMMIT!!!

MOBO does matter. It matters in that if you go to cheap you may have trapped yourself into not being able to upgrade your cpu, memory, and cards. I know from personal experience. It's worth to invest a few extra dollars into the MOBO. You don't have to buy the most expensive MOBO, but don't cheat yourself.
Debbdoll....what kind of system are you wanting to build?
Gaming, multi-media, or multi-purpose?
What cpu brand you going with?
How much is your budget?
Hey Murt?
Did you ever find out anything else or decide to go ahead and get that PC air conditioner from Evercool? Just curious p.

Hey guys, I dont know if any of you are going to know much about laptop stuff since in general everyone would go desktop to play games with.. but i'll go ahead and post and see what happens.
So, the overview of my situation - im a student, and i'm considering transferring to UNC at chapel hill, which has a minimum laptop requirement. Since im a dork and play games etc i'd get the higher end laptop which has these specs.
Processor: Intel Mobile M 1.7 GHz Memory: 512MB DDR (1 slot open) Display: 15.1" SXGA+ TFT Screen Disk Drives: 80GB Ultra ATA HDD CD-RW/DVD-RW Multiburner Graphics: 64MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 Audio: 16-bit Audio w/ Speaker & Mic Communication Devices: 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Internal 56K Modem IBM 802.11a/b/g Wireless Adapter Expansion Ports: (2) USB 2.0 Ports (2) Type I/II PCMCIA Ports (1) Type III PCMCIA Port Battery: Li-Ion Battery, avg. life 4.5 hours Weight: 5.6 lbs. Pointing Devices: UltraNav Trackpoint Touchpad Warranty: 4-Year Parts & Labor 1-Year Battery Security: Computer security cable Software: MS Windows XP Pro MS Office 2003 Pro
This is their standard kind of deal, so it comes with insurance and their software and guaranteed connectivity to the unc network and all kinds of other advantages that seem worthwhile as a student. Now, it isnt required to get one of their laptops (of course they recommend it though). The specs I posted seem pretty good for a laptop, but I know you can get a 128 mb radeon 9600 pro mobility on laptops now, which may be much better off for gaming stuff.. otherwise it seems fine, unless there is something else I don't know about laptops that makes them unsuitable for games.
I could also get a laptop from somewhere else such as Dell, where you have a little more freedom in customizing the laptop.. I visited the dell kiosk around me last weekend to check out their laptops, they seem a little bulky (15.4 screen with fullsize keyboard I think) but overally pretty nice. Being a student, the pentium m processors seem to hold the most appeal (comparing them to the scaled down pentium 4 I guess? 2.8-3.4 ghz or so on laptops at Dell)
Im not sure how much of a difference the pentium m will make, but the battery life being 4-5x longer would be nice. Although, I know that would not be the case while playing games, I do other things too;)
My main purpose for this thread is both advice on what to get, and also I am wondering if anyone has experience with laptops and games. The specs on these laptops seem to get as high/almost as high as desktops (lower in some areas, rather expensive to get 7200 rpm, think the standard is 4600 or something... processor is a bit lower etc) but can they run newer mmorpgs well?
Would a laptop be able to handle the upcoming mmorpgs like UXO, wish, tabula rasa, EQ2 etc? Im not even sure how well desktops will run those, the screenshots look pretty intense.. but I hope so;) Anyway, any advice or some details about game playing on laptops etc would be much appreciated! thanks.
Just putting in my opinion, since everyone has one. Actually all the parts do matter. The chipset on the Mobo is very important. An upgradable BIOS (online) is also important.A MOBO that has a BIOS that freely allows you to overclock is nifty to have when you want to put that CPU to its REAL toprunning speed.Combo's are great to get that the dealer has already took the time to test and burn in for ya. A MOBO with an 8xAGP is really necessary since games are so graphically intensive, you don't want any lag,and you need at least 128MB of Video Ram on it. The Video card should be top of the line as you can afford, since as I say,the games we all play and will be playing require a lot of speed to get the FPS rate up so you don't get that jerking lag. If you get a MOBO with sound and video on board, just remember,if one goes out,or you want to upgrade to something better, your still gonna have to buy a seperate AGP or PCI card anyway. RAM is darn important too since you don't want to keep that CPU waiting another millisecond for the instructions on what to do next. A great site for pricing and staying competitive is www.pricewatch.com. Just search for what you want and they stay up on a lot of the lowest prices on the web, shipped right to your door, and some ship for free. Just wanted to help.Thats my 2 cents.
Thats a good deal and all, but there is one problem. The Ram won't work with ur mobo. The mobo uses pc3200 where as ur ram is pc3700. just thought i'd tell u.

thanks gunblade, I'm thinking of returning the heatsink and pitching out another 60 bucks and getting a new case...
the thing is , will my Biostar M7NCD Ultra fit this http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=103_106&products_id=1121&osCsid=370927c8f6bba7df22e9ebd6834b721f ?
thanks...heh :P

i wouldn't recomend that case for a few reasons:
1.) It takes one 120mm fan instead of a more efficieant 2 80mm fans on the bak.
2.)The thing on the door looks like it might get to close or even nudge ur heatsink.
3.)It's kidna ugly XD
Well thats my two sents. Good luck.
