Hello IronHydra. CPUs have a socket #. In your Intel processor's case it is a socket type 478. Therefore, heatsinks that fit socket # 478 will work with your processor, and the one you have listed in your specs will work with your P4 processor.
Here's a link that might help you with any pc cooling concern's you might have. I prefer Arctic, Vantec or Coolmaster products, but there are a lot of good performers on the market.
I want close to the best though ...so some stuff i will "pay""
debbdoll, since your going with AMD processor I put together some links that will help you in your decision. What you have to consider right now is that AMD just released their socket 939 processors and ASUS and Microstar/MSI have a 939 MOBO on the market. The processors and mobos are not cheap however. You have the socket 754, 940 & 939 processors to choose from and socket A if you want as well. Socket 940 is being phased out of the retail sales market by AMD, and the socket 754 processors are supposed to go down in price considerably. AMD hasn't officially released any news on this as of yet.
I would not go with anything less than the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor (socket 754, 2.0ghz, 1600mhz bus, 1024kb cache). You can purchase one for as little as $270.00 at Newegg or Zipzoomfly.
If you want the top fo the line AMD processor, go with the AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 (socket 939, 2.4ghz, 1024kb cache). This one isn't cheap and is hard to find in stock. Newegg had some for $799.00 vs NCIX's price of $1,175. As far as a socket 939 mobo, go with the ASUS A8V dlx K8T800 Pro which you can get for $267 at NCIX. It will be cheaper if Newegg or Zipzoomfly have any in yet.
Another consideration you have to make is on whether or not you want to wait for the mobos with PCI-E slots which the earliest available will be by SIS sometime this month unless they are pushed back.
Another important consideration when purchasing your mobo for an AMD cpu is to make sure that you compatible RAM. There have been issues with certain brands of memory not working with the AMD cpu and mobo. Read this, very important:
I know that is a lot of info, but I hope it helps. I didn't give any info on hard drives and other components so if you have questions on those items just give a shout. Let us know what you pick out and decide on. Godd hunting p.

Ok after following this thread for some time i guess its my turn to post forthcoming PC purchases. Heres what ive been looking at: Asus K8V/SE Deluxe S754 VIA k8t800 ATX Sound Gig lAN Firewire USB 2.0 FSB 800 AMD (Clawhammer) Athlon 64 Bit 3200/1 Mb L2 cache 754Pin CPU OEM Thermaltake A1744 Venus 12 Heatsink & Fan Corsair (VS1GBKIT400) 1024MB (2 x 512MB Matched Pair), DDR400 / PC3200, non-ECC, Unbuffered, CL2.5 Sapphire Radeon X800PRO 256MB DDR3 AGP X8 TV-Out Dvi-i Seagate ST3120026A 120gb 7200rpm 8mb Cache Barracuda 7200.7 Plus Thermaltake VM3000A Screwless Skull Atx Case in Black No PSU Ebuyer 600w Power Supply Black With Tri Colour Dual Fans Sony 52x32x52 IDE BLACK Drive Sony 16x40 IDE BLACK DVD-ROM Drive 4xAntec 80mm Blue UV Cooling Fan (planning on some modding) 2xLazer Led Ultra Violet & 2x12" UV Dual Cold Cathode Kit (I want it really bright ) All of that for £942.84 ($1,735.32) Now you can enjoy picking apart my choices...
i myself have a 9800 pro 128mb card and i am really satisfied. This card is amazing. Runing UT2004 perfect.
Well unles u have the 500 dollars to waste on a Card i reccomend u to get the X800 but if u looking for best in 200$ get the 9800 pro. you will love it.
Im buying a comp for the future not the past! anyway 9800pro costs like £180, why not go the whole hog and get a x800? its only £280. I dont think thats a waste at all.
Id rather be amazed by the X800 than satisfied witha 9800pro
Well pretty much the slowist part on any PC is the hard disk. Thats why the speed is rated in ms.
The main board that you have chosen is rated for RAID, so why not use it. Get a couple of raptor sata drives at 74gb or 37gb. These things run at 10k rpm. They are the fastist sata they make atm, that i know of. Atleast get one and drop that blumbering 7200 rpm. That is, if you want to be amazed rather then satisfied.

Well, after a certain amount of deliberation between the X800 and 6800, i chose the X800 after reading a large amount of reveiws. I've been an Nvidia man for a while now, and i had alot of trouble with my FX5600, it may have been to do wityh my setup but i was not pleased with it at all.
From what i understand ATi has got the most technoligically advanced card. Not becuase of it pixel pipelines or any of that stuff, just look at the sizes of the two cards, the X800 is smaller than a 9800, and the 6800 takes up two slots (wouldnt fit in my case) but if you think about it thats a quite significant difference if the X800 is beating the 6800 and its twice as small. I dunno just makes me feel that im in good hands with ATi. (not to mention its £100 cheaper )
Absolutely agree with u man. ATI has never given me any problems. Just goes to show that they are the best at it and with the most Technology. I currenty have a 9800 pro 128mb very nice good. Amazing fps. Now im looking to get 512 more Rambus memory in my comp, to get rdy for the revolution of the MMORPG. EQ2. I CANT WAIT lol.
Well just want to say good luck to thje guys who got accepted into beta. First have fun and second but not least plz try to make the game BEST ever done.
ATI is getting a little bit skimpy with there Radeon 9800 pros. In some cards, they sell the 64 bit memmory, and in otherse the sell the correct 128. One way to make sure, is if ur memorry go's straight down on ur vid card u get a 64bit, and if it is in an L shape, it is 128 bit.

Because the place i was lookin' didn't stock them yet. But maybe by the time i buy my rgi it will be stocked and ill buy that instead. If not, ill have a well cooled case, i can OC to +15% performance, maybe even +20% (similar to XT)
Even though the 6800 supports pixel shader 3.0 and the X800 only supports 2.0, the grpahics on the radeon are still going to be wicked sick. your gonna get a good 60-80fps on HL2 from what i see of it. pixel shader 3.0 might make things a little nicer in the future but is it really worth the extra £100, and the space/wattage/noise?
edit: HL2 will probably knock out more than 60-80fps, especially when overclocked. most other games up until late 2005 will run at 50-70fps (hopefully )
i have the JULY issue of PCgamer and it compares both of them and the X800 XT PE(platinum Edition) beats the GeForce just by tiny bit. But the GeForce requires 2 12 volt 480 watt power supply which is outrages. Where the X800 just like other video cards requires 1 12volt and 1 slot.
For me if i had the money I would get the X800. just cause i love everythint that ATI does.
id reccomend getting at least an AMD64 2800. Athlon 2500 is abit unstable and to have an x800 in it would be slight overkill i feel, but hey, its your decision.
Your processor is lagging behind severely when taking into account the other specs of your sytem. It will become a bottleneck, as well as your hard drive depending on its speed.
The reason I say this is that in your system, your RAM will be bottlenecked because it's faster that the FSB of your processor. The 2500+ isn't a bad processor, per se, it's just not up to par with what you have/want to have in your system.
Go with an Athlon 64 2800+ atleast, if not faster. You'll be much more pleased with the results.

I *Think* the big question here is why an X800 PRO vs. an X800 XT?
I don't think it was a 6800 vs. X800 question.
