Im guessing OP didnt read the recent information that 75% of gamers buy physical copies of games where they can get digital copies instead. So that 300k figure being 75% of the actual sales makes the game in the 400k ballpark...not 1.2million.
An interesting read and certainly reflective of my own habits.
I have been an avid gamer for over 25 years, started with a speccie 48k and Jet Set Willy lol.....Dark Souls 2 was the first game I have ever purchased via digiital download as opposed to physical copy. I also read with interest that From Software were very keen to announce that DS2, arguably a "niche" ARPG has sold over 1.2 million.....
The silence regarding sales from ZOS speaks volumes...
In a note to clients on Monday, Wilson explains that GameStop is simply a specialty retailer with a declining end market. GameStop's largest exposure is physical videogame sales, which up until recently was the company's fastest-growing segment.
Lol, OP, the fact you re on here arguing, not only the wrong website, but made up numbers for a game, that didn t sell well at all, and seems to , according to anyone I know that plays the game, has a lousy retention, speaks volumes.
Welcome to 2014... You guys sitting here trying to argue more people are going to stores and buying PC games than downlaoding them.... Oookay mmorpg.com ESO haters... Oookay lol

Heres a article from an actual company not some random thing. If you read your article it shows where it got its information which is just another random website with no facts.
EA states that they expect digital sales to become the majority in about 2-3 years. So looks like ESO is still only at 400k unless you have proof otherwise.
This thread has been amusing. Though the last few pages make me think of this:
You just can't argue with fanboys or haters. Granted, though... when haters start to bring up actual sources and not just extremely generous hyberbole as seen in the first post... Well. Yeah.
It's also hard to argue against them (haters) when reviews pound on a game, especially if they're from e-celebrities. Even Azbats just bent over ESO (and more recently, WoW for having awful practices lately), and Force quit it from disappointment after covering it for years and saying it was amazing the first few days of playing. AngryJoe and Boogie298 or whatever his name was -- as well as most streamers and youtubers -- just nailed the coffin in this game in terms of the future web of nets sales or subscriptions by shunning it (the interwebs has a lot of influence on people -- though in the case where so many are negative about something it's usually deserved in some way).
That said, it probably has a small and loyal player base now that genuinely loves it. Though even they almost all admit that it's horribly flawed in a lot of ways (then again, no game is perfect. You just have to pick the one that's "fun" for you in this industry now). But it has the Elder Scrolls title, and it's true that patches fix problems little by little as a whole. Game will likely be pretty great in half a year or by the first expansion. Though will it be able to retain profitable numbers before then to avoid becoming Free to Play?
You also have to separate those who are hating the business practices and paywalls from those who are giving fault to the game based on it's buggy states, game progression bugs, economic failures, exploits, bots... etc. Though there are so much of the later, that tacking prices onto them is just a condemning prospect as a whole for a potential buyer who is also and advocate for consumer rights or fair treatment of gamers (I.E. not being screwed by big money).
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing). German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century. Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now). I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things). In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while. If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.
Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this. If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own. Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis. Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

So people are haters now ? People expecting a solid purchase for their money only to get a half assed mmo in return and spread this word around the globe to hold on to your horse before buying yourself mmo flop number 8972349 on the market ?
Show us facts not half assed articles that has nothing to do with ESO sales. Why do you think ESO has not shown their sales number yet ?
Why ? why would they not share their millions and millions and millions of sales ? Why would they not show concurrent users at their peak ? Because we all know Zenimax deliverd a shit mmo in todays market where people expect a little more then using a major IP and raping it to cash in money.
We have seen it before did we ? SWTOR ? remember ? sold what ? 2.7 million boxes ! ? Where did it end up ? Free to play ! why ? it was a disapointment !

ESO same shit dude....same shit.
All that is fine. It's ok you can feel that way. You may even be right in some abstract way, but making an argument about sales using only physical copies as a gauge in 2014 is pretty dumb imo.
Heck even if ESO sold the same amount of digital as it did physical it would be at 800k. Do you believe ESO sold more physical boxes than digital downloads?
Yeah this is getting silly. Have fun with the thread it's all yours.
This says its down to 60% and you can see the decrease in sales over the years. So we have a major breakdown saying that Physical copies is still in the game, we have one of the biggest companies saying it will still take a few years for the 49/51% to happen. But you want us to believe the 0 facts you have given us that digital copies is 3x the sales of box which is a 30% decline in 1 year when on average its about 5-6%?

You are fighting an uphill battle and for nothing:it's much better if the haters think they have won (or whatever happens in their heads) and stay away from TESO, we have already enough wowkiddies trying to derail it. If the g et to the point of giving credit to a site like gamespot saying that boxed copies sell more than digital, you already have a sample of their mental process

NA, head to Wabbajack now. I came up with this sick Night Blade mitigation build lastnight. It's still in the X phase, but I've had Dks looking at me like WTF!?
edit- lol that sounds so crazy I want to delete it hahah. More testing and recording now.
They didn't hit their target sales. Can't give you exact numbers because I don't have that info but I do know with 100% certainty that their sales projection vs actual sales are way off and they are in damage control right now. It seems a fire has been lit under some of the top exec/dev's asses to fix "what's wrong" with the game so I would expect to see some fairly big changes over the next few months.

I'd expect big changes regardless. They have a lot of bugs to fix, an economy to fix (or fix itself), and a lot of angry fans to deal with at present. Despite a few initial positive reactions, the sensational media has turned on them (usually providing sources or providing examples if it's a video based review).
Out of respect to my friends who work at Zenimax Online I won't go into details regarding your comment other than saying it's a MMO and big changes are traditionally fundamentally expected when a game doesn't perform as well as it's expected. Numbers weren't discussed, but certain lists and frantic movements and expectations and jobs were. Case and Point Final Fantasy XIV -- though do not expect a fully revamped game if they were in this situation. This is not confirmation of anything, and I'm hardly a reliable third party source despite knowing who I get my information from.
Pushing the console version back was step one on a very long list of things to do with regards to all of this.

I was going to post right before I saw yours that I thought it was strange that we didn't see any big names over at Zenimax Online announcing some kind of departure. Usually by now, we start seeing the guys responsible and/or scapegoats for releasing a sinking ship start making their "pursuing other opportunities" announcements.
So far there have been no lay offs or even people leaving or anything that might suggest a sinking ship. So they have so much money they can afford to keep up such a front. This does not make sense. May be their budget for the game was not as high as people think. May be the initial sales made up for it and now whatever subs they can scrounge up is enough.
The only indication that this game has not done very well is the fact that Zenimax has been silent about the sales figure and the interest in the game on these boards if you compare to GW 2 at the same time frame has waned far more quickly and drastically.

The game isn't necessarily a sinking ship but they know there are problems and they want to work them out ASAP. As for people leaving the company, remember that they still have a console release coming up and will need all hands on deck to finish. No reason to cut experienced people and have to bring new ones up to speed this deep in development. If any staffing cuts happen they will probably be after Christmas / new years.
I'm speculating on the cuts though, I have no insight on their staffing. The game has potential and I hope they can get things running smoothly over the next few months.
