This is one of the only MMOs in recent history not to go f2p and is actually growing it's subscriber base a year and a half after launch. It releases arguably more quality content at a faster pace than just about any mmo out right now and is on the verge of an expansion that according to the devs, will bring the same amount of content as vanilla.
And yet haters continue to downplay the hell out of this game. Why? Who knows. Maybe the combat was so slow it scarred them for life.
Imagine if swtor released a hutt palace with mini games, lotteries, public events, pazzak, and pod racing... In a single patch. Not expansion. Game sites would go nuts. These forums would explode.
Ffxiv effectively does something like this every four months and it gets maybe a thread like this and that's it lol.
This time next year, this game will most likely break the 1 million sub mark and we will once again move the goal posts.
I don't understand where this idea that FFXIV has a low population /popularity comes from. Has any one of you making that claim actually tried to log into this game recently? (And by "recently" I mean more recently than the released numbers from last year being thrown around and called "recently".)
Half the servers in the NA farm are closed off to new characters and all the Legacy servers STILL have log in queues every day.
Well you have to keep in mind that the numbers are low to square enix. They never show off about sub humbers, just registered accounts.

FFXIV;ARR is popular, i don't think there can be any denying that, on Odin server i often have to queue for a few minutes when i login, in the evenings. I just have a problem myself with the 4 million figure, don't get me wrong i love the game and i'll be sticking with it for a long time yet, but, i really need to see those figures from SE that show the game is over 2m even
I wouldn't disagree with you either. Truth is....I don't have any real numbers about XIV's active population. I admit it, i'm one of the only few left who don't, it seems. All I can do is state my observations. I've played so many MMOs over the last decade and a half, and with the exception of WoW, I have never seen one maintain it's populations months....if not years (1.5 years in this case) after release. I've never seen one where leveling in zones over a year later still has you running around with not one or 2 others in the low to mid level zones, but dozens of players......everywhere.

Someone quote this man, because he's absolutely right.
I see pages and pages of people trying to rationalize the idea that this game is going to go down in flames, or that it's not making any money, or that it's a failure of a game....and yet, there's new content every few months, a massive expansion on the way, and full servers.
It's really quite pathetic and hilarious, considering there's no sign of this game doing anything put picking UP steam.

What would that be.....exactly? What are the numbers? What's the population? What does SE consider low? How far off from SE's target population is the game currently?

He's just flapping his lips. Nothing of any substance to say, like most people who seem hell-bent on trying to convince people the game is failing somehow.
This game is polished and the devs do work. It didn't click with me due to lack of PVP and Eastern RPGs and me just don't get along (Pink/Blue hair and little goofy sprites I'm looking at you). I truly want the game to succeed, though. I remember reading a quote from one of the devs about going free to play and what not. He said something along the lines that if he can't make a quality MMORPG worthy enough to charge a sub fee then he shouldn't be making the game at all. I like that.

Registered accounts is not people that are playing the game, I stopped playing over a year ago and I'm still a registered player. Registered accounts are simply people that played...ever, this inculdes v1 players.
If they were proud of their subscriber numbers they would use those instead of registered account numbers, wow gives subscriber numbers not registered accounts because people would call them on it.
This is akin to someone asking me how much money I earn and telling them how much I earn before tax instead of how much I actually take home. So as I say, its not us that say the numer is low. Its Square that is saying the number is low, because they refuse to use it and instead use a misleading number that means nothing.
Ff14 has very low player numbers, wow has no threats on the market and least of all ffxiv. Ffxiv isnt even in the same league.
So, > 1 million = low?
Please, tell me more.
You're confused, square said all 3 of their mmo titles combined had nearly 1 million subscribers.
They recently stated ffxiv had 500k.
If all MMO devs shot for 500k subs, then the MMORPG genre would be in a much better spot. By trying to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one.
Square never wanted to appeal to a small audience, they wanted WoW numbers and that was why they spent so much on the massive budget and why they are now adding a cash shop to double dip their players. They are still not happy with their numbers cause they keep using misleading numbers to try to prove they are massive (which they aren't). If WoW put 100 million registered players on their website everyone would laugh at them, yet square is doing the exact same thing.
Very few mmo titles have the gaul to use the registered player numbers trick because it's so cheap and stinks of desperation.
As I say, it's not me that is saying these things in reality. It's Square Enix that is saying it by boasting about things that mean nothing and keeping the real facts a secret. If you're proud of your numbers you don't try to mislead people into thinking you have 10x as many players as you do in reality. Pretty simple really. You know why they took the 2.5 million number off the website? because JP players demanded they remove it because it was misleading.
If Square wanted 500k subscribers all they needed to do was redo FFXI, it would of been insanely cheaper and they would of boosted subscriber numbers and made a massive profit. As It was they spent hundreds of millions on a game that did barely better than FFXI (which cost12 million) and in the process destroyed that games poplutaion because they basically canablised their own playerbase from one game to the other.
Registered players are not subscribers .When have they ever said they were ? So where have they ever mislead anyone ? Show me where they said registered players equate to subscribers .
They have every right to boast their registered players base. Who are you to ascribe insincere motives to a perfectly valid figure when Zenimax boasted their beta registrations even . Companies do this all the time it is people who love to rail at these numbers who actually think that a game is judged popular by these numbers alone.
Go play the game and see how crowded it is. No point really arguing with people who constantly find fault when other companies are busy announcing their beta subscribers and keeping mum about actual subscribers.
Final Fantasy is a very recognized product of SE .They revamped and released a new version because they take pride in their titles and wanted to do a better job and by golly they have done it. Shallow suppositions that they are doing it to fight WoW is quite without foundation. They are supporting and continuously spending money on their titles in this franchise. They have a great deal of pride in it and as fan of this franchise I am very pleased that they take such care with their products and are willing to revamp it at phenomenal costs to themselves.
People who are non fans of Final Fantasy cannot begin to understand as you have not even followed Yoshi and the various stages the FFXIV ARR came to be revamped and re-released. Uninformed and completely erroneous reasons being given to their decision to revamp is an obvious attempt to discredit a great and successful attempt that should be applauded and not ridiculed.

Asked if he thought Final Fantasy XIV was a serious rival to World of Warcraft’s throne, Wada said “yes, but the flipside is that they are a tough competition.”
Wada went on to outline the subscription and microtransaction models that FFXIV will employ, adding the company is looking to improve on the Final Fantasy XI system.
“The basic model hasn't changed,” he said. “It's a monthly flat rate service with additional charges for items that users want to buy.

Well if you call that growing then every single mmo ever released is growing I guess, they stil aren't "growing" a subscriber base. This is the thing that forces an mmo to go f2p, not how many registered accounts they have but how many paying customers they can retain (not sayign xiv will go f2p).

Just because he said they think they are serious rival you think that is their motivation is it ? Any game company would answer in the affirmative even if they stood a snowball's chance in hell. That is a loaded question that is solely asked and answered without much weight or truth in it.
who cares who has the most subs? I don't! I play games I like regardless of how many people play it. FFXIV is a good game. I don't care about sub numbers, what's the point? ALOT of people play it. If it was deserted then that would be saying something. You guys need to get off your high horses about crunching numbers when it's all B.S. anyways. We all know WoW has a high retention rate that is gradually diminishing over time. Sure they still have the most subbers but who cares? If i worked for Blizzard sure i'd care cuz that'd be my job on the line... but here i sit, a gamer who's only responsibility is to enjoy games i play or not enjoy them.

Lets put it this way, what company would spend around $100 million on a new game to attract 500k subscribers when they already had a one with 500k subscribers. Keep in mind that it was known all along that releasing another FF MMO would destroy the old one, just as releasing wow 2 would destroy wow 1.
You don't spend 100 million to steal your own players from one game to the other unless you expect to get millions of subscribers, if they were happy with 500k they would of never made XIV and just given FFXI a make over.
It's pretty much common sense. Given that many, many XIV players still think that registered accounts = subscribers maybe that's not so common though.

If all XIV players were like you nobody would care at all. People like OP are the problem.
Says the guy who posts the same negative rhetoric in every ffxiv thread...
There are 2 assumptions I will make.
1. SE is not going to cancel the game any time soon.
2. When I log into the game I will continue to expect to see many players at all levels doing all kinds of different things together.
Is there anything else you need to define a successful MMORPG?
I really don't care if the number is 50K, 500K, or 5000K. The game feels like it's the most populated MMORPG on the market.
