The thread took my interest from that and I decided to offer the opposite side of the argument, as I said this was a post made in the general section of the forum and not this fan forum.   You expect over exagerations and gushing in a fan forum but if you do it on a general people are going to call you on it.

Gonna go back to posting in the general now since this sub forum doesn't really have much interest to me outside of this thread anyway, I said what I wanted to on the subject.

Sorry OP, it's a niche title just like about everything else out. If it gives you the warm fuzzy that it is superior to other games than I'm with you and support you all the way! I have had those same feelings countless of times through the past decade. :)

I bought and played the game, it it is beautiful, I just wish they could have finished it. The FATE system to me was a cop-out and left a bad taste in my mouth. It was like they give you all these cool ways to advance with multiple jobs and don't give enough quests so they developed FATEs.

Anyway, I think it is a good game and demands high praise, but WoW of course has nothing to fear from it. (imo) /shrug

(And by "recently" I mean more recently than the released numbers from last year being thrown around and called "recently".)

Half the servers in the NA farm are closed off to new characters and all the Legacy servers STILL have log in queues every day.

Well you have to keep in mind that the numbers are low to square enix.  They never show off about sub humbers, just registered accounts.

    That says it all really.

What would that be.....exactly? What are the numbers? What's the population? What does SE consider low? How far off from SE's target population is the game currently?

Registered accounts is not people that are playing the game, I stopped playing over a year ago and I'm still a registered player.  Registered accounts are simply people that played...ever, this inculdes v1 players.

If they were proud of their subscriber numbers they would use those instead of registered account numbers, wow gives subscriber numbers not registered accounts because people would call them on it.

This is akin to someone asking me how much money I earn and telling them how much I earn before tax instead of how much I actually take home.  So as I say, its not us that say the numer is low.  Its Square that is saying the number is low, because they refuse to use it and instead use a misleading number that means nothing.

What point are you trying to prove, exactly?  Why does it matter?  Clearly the game is growing....so yeah

Well if you call that growing then every single mmo ever released is growing I guess, they stil aren't "growing" a subscriber base.  This is the thing that forces an mmo to go f2p, not how many registered accounts they have but how many paying customers they can retain (not sayign xiv will go f2p).

Are they breaking records?  Probably not, but it's hilarious to assume that the game is "dying" or "unsuccessful" while huge content updates come frequently and an expansion is on the way.  Cause I'm sure SE is just digging into their pockets to make these things, they totally didn't make enough money to justify all of the aforementioned.

In hindsight, look at wildstar.  A few new pieces of content, come changes, and that's it months after release.

I seriously think some people are just out of touch with reality.

Edit: I don't even PLAY ffxiv anymore, so it's not like I'm defending my choice in game...just common sense.

I was talking about the being moderated or getting a simple warning for singling out the OP specifically.

Might be considered a violation of the ROC.

Not that this probably means much, but my server sold just over 5,000 of the weekly lottery tickets in the Gold Saucer before the drawing last Saturday, and I'm not on one of the most populated servers.

I'm thinking of starting a thread on Reddit next weekend to see if various servers can report in their ticket sales a couple minutes prior to the drawing and put the numbers together to come up with a rough estimate.

This is actually quite brilliant.  A good way to show a rough estimate of active players.  And since ffxiv is made to not need alts (though some people still do for whatever reason, not many) you know you're getting a good number.

It's what you have to do to try to bring in those wow players. There not the sharpest knives in the drawer you know.

    Please, tell me more.

You're confused, square said all 3 of their mmo titles combined had nearly 1 million subscribers.

They recently stated ffxiv had 500k.

If all MMO devs shot for 500k subs, then the MMORPG genre would be in a much better spot. By trying to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one.

They didnt shoot for 500k....thats what they had to settle with after game failed in first iteration.

I really don't care if the number is 50K,  500K, or 5000K. The game feels like it's the most populated MMORPG on the market.

Thats why you make small zones if your server tech cant handle large number of players, im saying that for a long time, SWTOR, for instance, huge zones but only 50-ish people/instance of zone, of course you wont see pretty much anyone even if there are 1000000000000 players playing SAME zone at the same time.

Pretty sure they had small zones because ps3 only has 512mb of ram. There are hundreds of people in gold saucer right now.

Whatever. You can't even make a character in over half of the servers unless it is like 2am in the morning due to the number of players. This is the only MMO that has released recently that didn't have server merges. It isn't obfuscated behind things like "mega" servers for GW2.

None of that matters, what matters is how much money they're making.  We tend to measure financial success of games based on sub numbers, which is a safe bet.  When a company doesn't divulge that information though, the only thing you have to go on is straight fiscal information and context clues.

My kids were like, "Dad, join FFXIV again with us"! So I paid my subscription and attempted to join their server (Gilgimesh) I think it was. Anyway, I couldn't join! I was like frick, I will try again later. They then said "Dad, you will have to try at about 2am". Fine, still can't create a toon! I tried for about 3 days off and on and finally just gave up. They got my $14.99 and I tried to get a refund but never got an answer. I'm not sure why they can't be like other games and have a seperate character server. /shrug

    And?

See, something tells me that if their servers are all running at or near capacity, And we can see that they are, not just by changing server metrics to say "Full Server" even if it's not. And that even if that "Full" number is lower than other MMORPGs, it's still pretty safe to assume they have at least hit their projected target for what they wanted for populations.

Anything else..........who cares? It changes nothing.
