They won't do it. It's one of the primary things I asked for in my blog. But the only people who have the power to force them to do it, is the FTC. Or a lawsuit (of any kind) which puts everything into discovery, people getting deposed etc.
I'm saying it again, there is no version of this, that ends well. Backers will end up losing their money, White Knights will figure out a way to spin it (and make it about me being the cause etc). And my guess is that, depending on what the Feds uncover, someone is going to end up in jail if they're not careful.

Who told you that? This is not correct.
Crowdfunding is based in trust. If you don´t trust don´t fund. If you during the ride get cold feet thats up to you but your money will be most likely gone.

1:) Avoid Star Citizen like the plaque. Don't put any money towards the company, in any way. Until they prove they aren't ripping everyone off, I'm going to assume that they are.
2:)Avoid Derek Smart as well. Don't buy into his rants or even read them. A person is better off not even hearing things that might be a load of BS. I am not going to put one penny to any of his projects either.
Eventually, one of those points might be proven wrong, but until then I think I'll just hold the perspective that they BOTH have issues I don't want to deal with.

It will be interesting to see how it all pans out. I agree that anything better than vast disappointment is unlikely. The game is simply painted to be too much. It will not be the second coming. In the end, it's just a video game and there is no guarantee it will even be a good video game.

You sir, are today's Golden Cigar recipient. Well stated
Game developers are just human beings who happen to make games for a living. If you want to hold us up to higher standards of conduct, then go ahead ...but don't be surprised if we don't uphold them.
The thing that never sat right with me is that Star Citizen is clearly trying to be all things to all people and have so many different "modules" that it becomes a convoluted mess to even understand what the hell SC is even supposed to be.
What they should have done is make the main game (whatever that is) first, release it, polish it, then start working on all this other crap. Single player campaign? FPS portion? What? Just make the damn MMO and have something to show for all this time and money.
The nice thing about having a bad reputation is that you don't have to worry about being reputable anymore. You can sling mud all you like, attempting to bring others down to your level without fear of being perceived as being any more of a scoundrel than most people already know you are. Of course there is always an ignorant few who will be unaware of this type of disreputable soul & give an ear, like a mark will do to the shady used car salesman. Such is the way of the world.
The true tragedy is the associative damage that has already been done. You could have a wonderful, deliciously executed birthday cake on the table, but if you place a turd on the table next to it, no one will go near it.
I'll let you all figure out which side of this is the metaphorical turd.

The fanboys have already claimed that CIG has been doing that all along!
Most of those modules could be released as an expansion, or as a content patch, but Roberts has this grandiose vision that will never be realized. It sort of reminds me of Brad McQuaid's vision of Vanguard. The vision always blinds developers until it's too late.
Think small, release small, increment through the lifecycle. Big projects usually fail because designers set unrealistic goals.
The metaphorical turd fits perfectly with Chris Roberts. He ahd no rep with publishers, attempted to bring them all to his level, bad mouthing to make him to appear better and then, jumped to the ignorant unaware that gave an ear (and 85 million dollara mosltly for vaporware). True tragedy is the associated damage for the crowdfunding/space sim mix. Nobody will want this cake anymore.

Vision is good. It gives you a game like Everquest. Unrestrained vision without accountability produces Vanguard. It's simple, really. The biggest problem with kickstarter is the lack of accountability, say what you want about big studios stifling creativity, at least it forces the production of an actual product.
Everyone got all hot and bothered by the vision of Star Citizen. Didn't anyone stop to consider the possibility that such a vision isn't even possible given logistical constraints and, yes, sheer scale? According to their marketing, aren't they basically producing like 5 different games? What the actual ****? It's grandiose stupidity, IMO.
It's nice to sell a vision of something that's never been done before. Every industry needs its big thinkers and risk takers. But FFS, the development of this "multigame" looks like amateur hour combined with pure delusion.
I'd have infinitely more respect for Mr. Roberts et al if they took a moderate, realistic approach to developing this behemoth and focused all resources into delivering some sort of core product with the then realistic goal to expand on it and release standalone "modules." The way it's currently being developed deserves every single ounce of criticism given to it.
Pardon me whilst I go wander around my hangar and wonder WTF is going on. Great game.
As Roberts said, he is just doing what the "community" (3% of backers) wanted. They wanted to give him money to watch him, Ben Lesnick and his wife, talking how awesome the community is, how awesome they are, and how everything else that actually exist in the world is worst than a vision.
He is "customer focused". Do what those who pay him an "optional" and seriously expensive suscription disguised as ship sales want.
The game is a bonus. What matters is the show, says he, in other words.
And for the rest, for all the rest his speech was, you spent just 40, shut your mouth, enjoy the show, our pretty faces talking and saying how fun is to sell a 2500 dollars jpeg, and, arena commander and our (broken) awesome delayed tech demos are more than enough for your money, don't complain.
Do with that what you want, but outside of the fluff, that was what Mr. Roberts said. And let's just not forget that he confirmed by new statements that lied for years, as well as his die-hard fans, when trying to convince people, in order to get more 40's, and, eventually, transform a few of them in zombies too.
Another Tl;DR version: "Keep buying our concept-art ships and our $15,000 founders' packages, guys, and maybe every six months I'll write another 'letter' so you can post and re-post and re-re-post it all over the internet and claim that we are making 'progress!' And while other people are playing space sims they can actually log in to, you can talk down to them because you are somehow, magically, 'better than' they are! Heck yes, this system is working great for me, down here in the Bahamas!"

You know, I'm having quite a bit of fun with Elite: Dangerous in terms of a game focused around exploration on a scale that is truly impressive. And you know what? I feel good about supporting Braben, because he actually produced a game and had enough respect for his customer base to not milk them for every dime some of them were probably willing to give.
Don't misunderstand me. I want Star Citizen to release in the form that was marketed and to have it be the phoenix rising from the ashes of the MMO genre as a whole, but the only thing my eyes are able to focus on is the milking of Mr. Robert's fanbase for all its worth.
With Elite working on planetary landings and adding content and No Man's Sky on the immediate horizon, I've all but forgotten about this game. If it ever releases, whatever "it" means, and it actually delivers, I'm willing to eat my words. Until then, I'll see you in the two actually realized space games that may lack some of the pure sex appeal of SC, but they actually exist.
This quote jumps out at me from Chris Roberts' letter. "That it’s ‘feature creep’ and we should make a smaller, less impressive game for the sake of having it out more quickly or in order to meet artificial deadlines. Now I’ll answer those claims in one word: Bullshit! Star Citizen matters BECAUSE it is big, because it is a bold dream. It is something everyone else is scared to try."
"Artificial deadlines"?? umm...didn't YOU set those deadlines?
As far as the other big talk, the reality is the Star Citizen will (hopefully) matter in one of two ways. Either as a late, but awesome game or (more likely) as a very costly debacle that leads to the rules around crowd-funding programs being tightened. Either through internal efforts or legislation.
Grandiose visions and "bold dreams" are great, but you still have to make the trains run on time.

Couldn't it be said that stated "deadline" was set based on the original concept, for X amount of funds, available funds increased, so the scope expanded? In turn pushing a relative release much later? It just seems like a simple to understand concept to me...
Secondly any date given at the start of a project is a projected hunch at best.. It's no "deadline"...
------------------------------------
I also find it weird for people to be praising Elite in comparison to SC... As it also failed to meet it's original stated vision. Not to mention it's been sold as gold, yet it's development and expansion is "to be continued". Hardly a bastion of developmental integrity. They essentially released a watered down version that may or may not ever be completed.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

I'm not really into the hater vs fanboi thing TBH. Yet it does cause my eyebrows to raise a bit when someone basically bemoans the idea of getting a bigger, deeper game. Sure SC may never see the lite of day, I won't contest that notion its too early, as well as too many unforeseen scenarios that could be.
It's just the nature of kickstarters, most don't go from 20mil to 80+mil in funding. Yet they still expand as more funds come in.

Generally I am not into that very much either and I kind of dislike the expression.
There are some things about SC I don't like for example the pricing of ships and how LTI has been handled but since mmorpg posted about Dsmart I have to admit this is pretty much what is going on.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
First, her name is Sandi Gardiner. She was promoted to VP of Marketing (has nothing to do with technical/development aspects). She's recognized as a co-founder and even mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records. As a marketer, I think she got her job done with helping promote the biggest crowdfunding project (game at least) ever. So, please, provide your sources that she didn't deserve her position.
OK, I wasn't going to do this in a forum, since it's going in my next blog, but let's go....
Sandi Gardiner is Sandra Roberts. You can deny this all you want, and it won't change that.
The kids in the early KS videos, are their kids.
oh really, what a shocking revelation that was, what´s the point?
You mention the video but you don´t link it up, although it´s none of ANYONE`S business, CR clearly says "Tell your FAMILY, tell your friends, tell your pets if that´s what it takes" while showing his family, friends and pet in that 2+ years old Kickstarter campaign final push video? Big effing deal Sherlock, again you revealed absolutely nothing.
Anyway it´s simply disgusting how you stir around in people´s private life that is none of your business, like a creepy online stalker.
No one is interested in the little soap opera you´re trying to make out of this.
btw first no one knew Travis D. and Chelsea left together because, you know, relationship? You want CIG to make public announcements about employees being hooked up, their marital status? Stop being ludicrous.
You´re desperately trying to find a scandal where there is none, your motivations and methods are obnoxious, repugnant and vile. Good day.
((IF (Sandi Gardiner = wife of Chris Roberts)) AND (IF (the two children in the SC Kickstarter video = children of Chris Roberts))) THEN (Chris Roberts = one lucky bastard)
((IF (Sandi Gardiner = wife of Chris Roberts)) AND (IF (the two children in the SC Kickstarter video = children of Chris Roberts))) THEN (Chris Roberts = one lucky bastard)
Have fun
I do find it a bit strange that they seem unwilling to acknowledge any relationship though. Perhaps I'm too old-fashioned, but it must produce some bizarre instances of interaction in the work environment.
Emotional issues from the private lives of couples working at the same company will inevitably affect their interaction at work. Perhaps they prefer that people think they're schizo when their interaction turns a bit icy from time to time, for no apparent reason ?
Before anyone get's over-excited by this, I'm not suggesting that this behaviour is a sign of criminal intent or a justification for a lawsuit !

Grandiose visions and "bold dreams" are great, but you still have to make the trains run on time.
The Moving Finger writes, and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

Indeed, some people are just haters wanting to hate.

There are some things about SC I don't like for example the pricing of ships and how LTI has been handled but since mmorpg posted about Dsmart I have to admit this is pretty much what is going on.

oh really, what a shocking revelation that was, what´s the point?
