I look at numbers like that like I do Youtuber subscriber numbers. Take Markiplier for instance. 10,126,535 subscribers. High number right? But just how many of them actually check his channel everyday. How many of them view each new upload. How many of them are like me, and subbed but rarely if ever view anything uploaded in the channel. If you aren't willing to share actual numbers, it's just fluff, or more accurately marketing. I'd wait till if/when they release the number of units sold for expansion.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

Hang on a fucking minute. This is account created since it turned F2P. Stop misselling it .

First FFXIV pushes its misleading numbers (when it really only has less than 500k subs) and now GW2 does it.

The only thing I hate more than the companies using these tactics is when websites like this one push the misleading numbers into meaning something they really aren't.  This and many other sites are horrible for doing this and they know what the numbers are.

Here is this very site doing the exact same thing not long ago:

    http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/15/feature/9776/Ironic-Lessons-that-WoW-can-Learn-from-FFXIV-.html/page/1

Using numbers that mean one thing to push the idea that they mean something else.
Registered accounts, (of which WoW has over 100 million) are being used to push the narrative that XIV and GW2 has millions of subscribers/active players which is totally nonsense and the company has never said that.

It would never work for WoW because they are open about their sub numbers and the number is so big it just would not work, for a small game like XIV though it actually did work for a long while.  This is why more companies are starting to do it and why I have been annoyed by it for so long.  Not because of what it did but what it encourages others to do.

People may think this is some great success but once you think about it GW2 sold half of all its copies in the first 4 months.

The other half of the copies sold in the next 2 years 10 months. And thats including all of the fire sales they ran where they sold it for 75% off.

With interest dropping off a cliff like that I wonder how much the expansion is going to sell.

GW2s is a quality production from nearly every aspect. Yet I have no desire to ever return. It all seems so canned, fabricated, shallow. Nice thing about this genre though is there is something for everyone so one persons shallow meaningless experience is another person's perfect playground. As for WoW, I still have fund memories of my time there. It had that fully fleshed out world and lore feel I look for in an MMO. It's just getting old, doesn't make it bad.

It says accounts created, it's not like they are trying to be sneaky and say players or something. Geez, get a grip and remove the tinfoil hats people. You don't like the game, we get it.

FIrst time in 11 years that WoW is behind in subs? Only proves how legendary of a game WoW was (is)
LOL and the shady PR speak claims it's first victim.

That's 7 million accounts, not 7 million active users.

It means that someone like me who hadn't played in over a year is counted in that 7 million.

Me too. I occasionally play but it's somewhat rare.

Only took them three years to release an expansion people will blow through in a week.

It looks like Arenanet releasing GW2 as F2P has done really well, if they have had 7 million downloads/registered accounts, then that does improve their chances of selling more HoT expacs, obviously the real test is what happens when the expac hits the shelves, even so 7 million is an awesome figure, even if it doesn't represent a revenue gain, its a brilliant, if gutsy move imo.

Until we actually get some sales figures for the HoT expac, we have no idea whether or not the F2P gamble will pay off, but, in terms of increasing possible sales, giving away GW2 for free was one of the best PR stunts i've seen in years, i hope it works out for them.

The only thing I want from GW2 is a solo queue for ladder PvP...like every serious PvP game has. Since HoT still doesn't have one, I won't buy it. I've had enough of Solo vs Premade in ranked PvP. It's a joke.

Like it or not, gw2 HoT easily takes the trophy home for smoothest/best launch of an expansion of all MMO's.
A little early to say don't you think? In EU everyone's still at work/school and in the US they're all still sleeping...
Wait for prime time and the avalanche of bugs before jumping to any conclusions IMO.

Yes, now look how the article wrote it and how many "news sites" will report it.  This is an industry wide problem that is in my opinion happening because of advertising.

I honestly think it's an unspoken thing but if you compare sites that mislead to ones that don't you will probably see more advertising going to one over the other.

    Inb4 delete and ban xD

And since we have whole historic data on GW2 revenue - whats exctly your point.

In fact, if they earned over 20m$/quarter JUST from cash shop, so 7m$/month, if average spending is 15$/month thats like 466666 subs (and thats one of weaker quarters).

Revenue/player is usually MUCH lower than that though.

Ye, and when you think about it a bit, with fact that GW2 is no.2 in the west since WoW, it just brings out the gap between WoW and everyone else.

So next time somene says that 6m wow players that quit wow went to other MMOs.....well, they didnt, maybe very very small %.

But, nevertheless, GW2 doing great 3 years after launch.
#2 in what?  I'd venture to guess SWTOR has a more revenue and more accounts.
You are right but don't tell them that. I showed them proof they were wrong last time I saw that claim and they harassed me until I left, all without ever showing their sources for their crazy claims.  Let them have their celebration, the fans can pretend whatever they want.

I came into this thread after being away from these forums for a few months and was not disappointed by some post. I will never understand why people feel the need to down play the success of games they don't like. Don't you get tired of it? Does the success of this game really upset you that much? Some of the people in the Guild Wars 2 section of MMORPG.com have been repeating the same tired crap since 20 freaking 12. 3 years of pretty much saying the same thing over and over....at every update or quarterly report. Just move on..

is a wide problem that ppl cant read yeah .... and there is nothing wrong with companys announcing accounts created , nearly all the mmorpgs do it , Tera , wow , ffxiv , gw2 , announcing numbers of time played , class % , races ....and what not....

i love when companys share those numbers is fun to see that there are 30M of humans in wow and 200k goblins only. that the most played class is hunter and the lowest is monk.

the only thing that Gw2 can announce is the number of HOT sales....that will tell more than anything.

and how many of those 7 million are f2p? THese numbers never mean anything......Except for WoW we dont ever see what percentage of the playerbase  quits these games.

It is one thing to say hey the game got an expac.  For some reason some fans around here say things like 'greatest expac launch in history' or '#1/2 mmorpg in the west.' Generally that stirs crap up, as everyone has their own opinion on what takes those crowns, and a lot of them will come in with their evidence to prove it.

WoW just announced it lost 6m subs in 3 months and who knows how many of the rest of the subs are actually active, and small matter that WoW isnt even a sub game in China.

Except you havent ever prooved anything.

And statement is from all available official data on games. Random internet crap is NOT proof.
