to be clear I am 100% neutral on this game. I dont follow it.
Having said that even though I dont follow it I see constant posts hating on it. including even videos that made legal claims that turned out to be nothing more than advanced form of trolling.
why? I dont get it.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
For me, it comes from talking to friends who worked with Roberts back in the Origin days. None of them have anything good to say about him, professionally or personally.
The SC game sounds great on paper, but I wouldn't trust Roberts with a shiny dime of my money. I do think they are trying to make a great game. Just that they are not likely to succeed given Roberts' real track record. More likely something will be released -- late, overbudget, and with excuses.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
It's not something that is rational at all. Most of the "nervousness and mistrust" comes from people who have limited understanding of what the developer is actually trying to do.
Many critics have limited understanding about how much money for example it takes to create such an ambitions game, how much time it takes, how the vision has changed over time, and when development actually started.
Once it became clear the entire scope of the game had changed due to the vast amount of money being tossed at them, it was clear to me that a full year would be lost just staffing up and training the studios to get the job done. Other's don't get that.
Others completely understand but have used the popularity as a platform to promote themselves by claiming it's impossible.

I think that 100% justifies not spending money on the game. Its pretty much why I am not following it and waiting to see if its done.
however, it doesnt explain why those people who are not spending money on it are hating on it. THAT part is like hating on your neighboor for something that doesnt have anything to do with your choices

There's a certain part of any community who actually want to see someone fail. Particularly if later they can claim to have been smarter than others and have seen it coming. I personally don't understand having any kind of joy in this and think it's pretty dysfunctional. I do see it in communities of gamers more often than professional environments.
It's because Derek Smart, a man who's never made a decent game in his life, a man who "acquired" a dev studio through some very shadey manipulation, can't get anyone to buy/back his shit games and CR is rolling in oodles of cash from contributers.
Smart's answer to this was to basically troll everyone and anyone he could on the general theory that if he threw enough shit maybe some of it would stick. It's pretty much a case of The Green Eyed Monster.
And no, I'm not a SC fanboy, I have no money invested in the game, I am completely neutral in this.
It's popular and it's trendy to hate what's popular. If you look at the posts here you'll find that it's the same 5 or 6 people that are continuously hating on the game. Sure they recruit a couple of passer-bys to join in once in a while but it's only that extremely small group of posters that spew vitriol every time someone starts a new SC thread. When there aren't any new threads they start posting their own. They are more rabid about SC than even the most die hard fan. It's kind of amusing really.

This.
But for me personally:
I love his ideas, think he might be over ambitious but hey, at least it isn't the 13-in-a-dozen fantasy mmo or just another poor themepark mmo, but what made me not give a cent to his project was that as soon as I registered on his forums -and this was a while after he got millions and millions of kickstarter funds to begin with- I got spammed to death by SC webshop to buy starter packs, new ships for $xxxx etc etc etc which gave me a bad taste.
'Webshop spams before a game is even released or going f2p.'
To the point I had to put their IPs on my ISP's blocklist.
(No, unsubbing from newsletters did NOT help)
Adding to the fact that imo his plans seemed overambitious at this point, and Idid see not much progression on the game then watching Twitch with the same old fighting zone with the asteroids and the same old race track for many months, other then new ships in the shop untill that Derek Smart thingy (still don't know who that guy is but anyways). Now I see new stuff being added and it seems they are making progression.
And newsletters and trailers do not do anything for me, I believe it when I see it myself, only then. I have seen thousands of people promise the world to others, and not deliver.
I hope this SC dev ceo succeeds, that this game becomes a succes, but I will wait till after release to put any money into it and wait out the first unbiased reviews of the game.

There is a video out there that makes claims about illegal hiring and firing practices that took me about 5 mins to find out what all just a troll scam to begin with.
The lengths some people go is absolutely amazing to me

I think watching forums can be very misleading.
If you judged it by the forum activity (especially this one), it comes across as 60% being very much against the game (or against the development practises), 20% being devoted fans and 20% in the middle.
In reality, large majority of the people pledged the game at the basic 40$ mark and only follow the project every now and then. Most of my friends are looking forward to it, but don't follow it closely enough to really have a critical opinion on the progress.
You also have lots of people who pledged, but don't have the computer to actually run any of it yet. This has to be a fairly large number of people. It is my guess those people are simply waiting for a release - they don't love it, they don't hate it, they're otherwise occupied until the release is more imminent.
I don't hate Star Citizen and I'm unbiased, but from the outside looking in
1) Their fan base is like a delusional cult 2) Derek Smart is apparently the Anti-Christ to this cult because they invoke his name for everything negative about the game. 3) Star Citizens buy-in options are the most ridiculous I've ever witnessed and there's no debate on context needed. It's bad for the industry and community. It sets a bad precedent.
"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"
So now a lot of people who normally couldn't care less about a space sim are rooting for SC to crash and burn so their business practices don't catch on.
Wait, are you talking about the trolls or the public at large? The trolls are doing their thing for attention but they're received much more positively than when they troll other games because of the ships.

I don't think anyone hates the game. It's just interest.
-this is the largest crowd sourced game ever, $100 million -they are selling items for prices that I have never seen anyone try, $25,000 for some packages -the hype about this game is insane
I am extremely apprehensive, that's all.
The actual hate, would come if the game turns out to be a failure, and the people who spent thousands of $ on it, end up disappointed. I spent exactly 0$, and it will remain 0$, so it won't be coming from me.
This is the internet. That aside, from my perspective (non backer, somewhat follower if only for the popcorn value) it's because SC is by far the largest crowdfunded game ever yet somehow has the least to show for it.
I mean go look at pretty much any article / feature for SotA, CU, Crowfall, Pantheon, etc. and you will get a decent sense of what sort of game it will be, where development is at and some solid details on various features (even if they are subject to change). You may also get a few screenshots / a video that is clearly a work in progress, but progress can be seen over time.
Now go look at pretty much any article / feature on SC and all you will get is a bunch of marketing, hype, and glossy screenshots (or concept art) and maybe a video of a tech demo. For this much funding and development time there are just too few concrete details on anything resembling an actual game that I (for one) can't help but be a bit cynical. Add to that the $1000+ for a concept ship thing they are so fond of pushing and it's no surprise some people love to hate SC; as others have said, it's a very bad example / president for the industry going forward.
People did not start hating it overnight, you have to look at the history to see what spurred the hate. Some of the things that come to mind are:
1. The original kickstarter projected the game to be released in 2014 but as Chris took in more and more money that was changed. No where in the donation or stretch goals was it ever mentioned that it was a point that would increase the length of time to finish the game, it just all of a sudden Chris started saying the release date was pushed back to 2016. This was even after Chris clearly stated in 2013, a year into the development that the stretch goals would NOT push back the release date. Yet here we are hoping for a 2016 release when its more than likely to be 2017.
2. The terms of service were changed without any notice when it was realized that they originally said if they failed to release the game in 2015 they would refund the money.
3. The first year Chris posted all kinds of stuff about transparency and only using the money for the game and yet in marketing videos for the game you can see extravagant things like $800 lamps and expensive desks and other things. There are also allegations of funding Chris's wife's movie project and other personal spending by Chris and Sandi but that cant be proven because no one has access to the financial statements.
4. The original kickstarter offered what was supposed to be a one time chance at lifetime insurance for your ship and then later continues to offer that. Limited edition ships are being sold and then re-released a year later. Ships are being sold that have not even been created yet.
I'm not a hater but as a backer I would be nuts NOT to have some concerns over how things are being handled.

I don't hate the game, I am just worried it will never get completed. I am waiting to buy my ship package until I see more signs that it is getting finsihed and the promises are made.

As for the game itself, I'm neutral.
But a part of me really DO hope it's gonna crash and burn, because as you say, I don't want to see any more examples of these kinds of business parctices.
The fact they have what they have completed as of now, albeit it a buggy mess, is impressive imo. I bought a package, if it turns out to work I will have a ship in one of the best games created up to this point in history. If it fails, owell, I buy all sorts of garbage from steam, play it, on to the next.
If I were a developer and if I offered a $25,000 package or a $20 mug, and people would spend money on it, why not. Marketing has been used left and right to sell products that revolve around entertainment. Football teams have baby diapers, people spend crazy money on them and then they get crapped in. I'd rather have a big badass digital ship than a dirty diaper that shames the opposing team, but hey, people can spend their money the way they want.
