I predicted WOW would outsell EQ2 by a wide margin in 2004 yet no one gave me my cake. The cake was a lie.
and that was a good call! I predicted the opposite and I failed on that one

did you have long drawn out debates about that subject spanning several months and several hundred posts?

My prediction?  Oculus VR is the first consumer available product for VR.  A bunch of celebrities, politicians and business men with connections called in and jumped the line to be 'first.'  Also a bunch of media that normally doesn't look into gaming called at the last minute to get 'review' products.  The consumers being commoners must wait until the specials get theirs first.

Crap like this happens all the time.  Especially when you're talking about such high demand and limited quantity.  It's a status symbol right now.

Not buying their faulty part B.S.  The details are very sketchy for a reason.  When you are lying to the mass people you want to keep as little information as possible and keep it vague.

Regardless, there's no denying that there's incredibly high interest for the tech.

How that all plays out remains to be seen.

does that mean that next years sales numbers will be lower than expected?

and what predictions did you make about VR 9-12 months ago. I would be curious to know

personally my prediction is that in the article I linked Palmer Lucky was not liying

    @SEAN you are overreaching.

What do we consider a success? 10 thousand sales? 50 thousand sales? Million? 2 million?

Never forget, many of those early adopters might throw their headsets in the trash.

What if the whole VR market sits at ~100-200k devices? Do you think devs will care for VR if this is the case?

It's the same with this tech as it is with new game.

But honestly, I'd like to know what do you consider success.

    @Leon1e
no its really simpler than that.

All I am suggesting is that this article is not a lie and that Lucky is not liying:
    http://www.roadtovr.com/founder-oculus-rift-pre-orders-going-much-better-than-expected-sales/

    Lucky Quote:
'I can’t talk about numbers, but we sold through in 10 minutes what I thought we were going to sell 'through in a few hours.'

Other people here are saying that he is, I am saying that he is not. that is my entire position regarding Oculus and VR in this thread

That really says it all. Why can't he talk about numbers at this point. The main reason a business doesn't want to talk about numbers is when it will leave them vulnerable to criticism and negative interpretation by analysts.
my position in this thread is that he is likely not liying.

your position seems to be that he likely is and you base this on...nothing

Nope, you misread me then. I wouldn't call anyone a liar unless they were and I could prove it.

I'm saying he isn't saying anything of any value. It's all a bunch of marketing obfuscation. He can't/won't talk about numbers. Why? That situation should be scrutinized.

Then he goes on to say nothing that sounds really exciting. He got more orders in 10 minutes than he expected in hours. So how many did he expect in hours... 1, 5, 20, 100? How many of those 10 minute streaks did he have? What was the total projected expectation? What was the total initial demand. If he can't/won't answer that and just talks in "exciting" PR blurbs like "sales in 10 minutes" then he's saying nothing at all.

On top of that they know how many people want (read have paid for) their units, yet they can't deliver and either haven't said anything until now which is shady and reflects on their integrity, or they didn't know which reflects on their competence.
you come very very close to contradicting yourself.

first you say he is not liying but then you saying he (or marketing) is obfuscating and in addition to that you base that conclusion based on zero evidence at all to support it.

are you saying that he is not liying but he is obfuscating?

on your last point the average thinking person would assume that based on passed sales of the Oculus that the 'expected' numbers would be aroun 50,000. Why would we ASSUME that they are 'expecting' less numbers then the rest of us would expect based on passed numbers that come from them!?

    1. Despite Oculus having the numbers of previous sales and knowing just as we do what those numbers are they likely estimated a number far lower than that instead of around those numbers because of reasons....and because of the non-evidence and non-logical reason to that.

I am not sure I follow your question. he cant talk about number NOW..but they can talk about numbers eventually. usually its an annual thing, quarterly thing, or never thing so I am not sure based on what he said.

forgive me but you are kinda new to this? by that I mean the reporting of a publicly traded company meaning facebook

for example, if your beancounters want to wait until a quartly report then they can do something like this:
    http://www.androidbeat.com/2014/05/samsung-sold-500-000-smartwatches-q1-2014-71-global-marketshare/

so yeah 'cant' doesnt mean 'cant never ever ever' which i thought was fairly well implied

It is not non-evidence and actually very logical. It is basic marketing 101. If one's product does well, especially better than expected, that information is released because it fuels more sales. If the sales aren't what one was hoping, it is kept vague and positive spin is put on it. Every company does it.

Its like that verizon commercial with Ricky Gervais where he says they looked into a competitor who says they have the fastest LTE, then do some digging and discover they're the fastest in 1 city in Kansas. The fastest statement is not a lie, but its very misleading. Ironically that same commercial does the same thing they state others are doing, lol.

Or like that Dodge Truck commercial where Sam Elliot is criticizing the "other" truck makers abuse of disclaimers while they have their own disclaimer showing at the same time.

    Shit just cracks me up.

So, just so we are cystal clear here

@SEANMCAD hasn't really provided any prediction number.

He agrees with Palmer Lucky in a linked article, in which Palmer says the sold faster than expected.

But no sales numbers. No produciton numbers. Just "10 minutes" and "few hours"

Just making sure I have this correct here, you know, so in 9-12 months we can come back and see exactly what @SEANMCAD ;told all of us.
