Gnomes -Halflings-Little people= I PREFER modern day To Tolkien

I always tend to play a gnome or halfing in every mmo if its a option available. No not a dwarf , a GNOME -Halfling - or little person.  I Find it interesting how dungeons & dragons and Warcraft portray gnomes and halflings as BAD ASS as opposed to Tolkien and lord of the rings. Type in halfling D & D and you will get all these pics of little tricksters with daggers and a devilish smile on their face. Type in WOW Gnome and you get the same along with magic wielding warlocks . Now look up Tolkien Hobbits and you get these little goofs with oversized feet who's shining achievement is shire pumpkin growing. Put a sword in their hand and they will likely cower in fear. I mean just the constant look of misery and cowardice on their face is rage inducing. I realize why i could never get into any of the LOTR movies, It was the hobbits. They are nauseating to watch.

Thoughts?

You are unclear on the concept....

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

    Hobbits are not Gnomes.

Gnome = Noldor = a race of Elves in Tolkien's writing.

That's the whole point. Tolkien wasn't making an MMO; he was writing a story. In fact, J.R.R.Tolkien's son didn't even like the direction that Peter Jackson took; he felt it was too action packed. The hobbits or halflings were the least likely to accomplish great deeds; they are similar to farmers, or people living in a rural area. They are beings that just wanted to live a simple life. The Lord of the Rings has sold over 150 million copies; I think he did just fine.

I understand where you guys are coming from and it sounds like you are huge Tolkien fans which is fine. Maybe i just "Don't get it" which is fine as well. For me though, The whole vibe of the hobbits made the movies borderline impossible to watch, Like i said their weakness was nauseating to watch .  Maybe it was the acting of Elijah Wood & Sean Austin that turned me off, cause i felt the bilbo baggins newer movies with martin freeman acting were a bit better, He wasn't a total bitch.

My thoughts are that you missed a lot about the whole Hobbit/LOTR story.  There is a reason that it was the Hobbits that were able to get The Ring to Mt Doom.  The whole point is that they WEREN'T the mighty Dwarves or the mystical Elves or even the ferocious humans...

Definitely! Even though I loved the LOTR movies, Martin Freeman's portrayal of Bilbo Baggins would be closer to what you are envisioning. Bilbo Baggins was tricksy and unconventional in comparison to other hobbits. I'm also a fan of Martin Freeman; he was great in BBC's Sherlock.

You got it backwards. Tolkien did it right and games did it wrong turning hobbits into just another race of blood thirsty killers.

I first exposed my daughter to Lord of the Rings when she was 5 and we did a vacation road trip from Vancouver down to the Grand Canyon, over to San Diego and then back home. I bought the BBC audio books for the trip and it made those long drives a lot of fun listening as a family.

It was the child-like hobbits with their preoccupation with eating 2 breakfasts and elevensies and other quirks that drew her in and turned her into a huge Tolkien and fantasy fan (which she still is at 19.) It was precisely because their character makes them the most unlikely of heroes that The Hobbit and LOTR work as good stories about overcoming fear and discomfort and personal growth.

You want MMO players to read? They can barely read quest text. That's asking too much from their short attention spans.

Of course a little girl of 5 is going to like the idea of a little hobbit with goofy feet, goofy face and eating 2 breakfasts a day along with a berry picking in a field of lilly flowers while they whistle and a ferry lands on their soldier to blow them a kiss.

O god someone call the ANTIFA people i think i just went sexist/political with this post----- thats a joke btw

Dude... it's a genre that started out very much as stories for kids. We're the weird ones here when we turned them into M rated games :)

You don't have time to read books, but you have time to stare at a computer screen.

If you study literature and the history of legends, you'll learn about several types of heroes. One type is, a common person, or even less important than a common person, or someone small in size, to defeat the ultimate evil. Examples are David and the Goliath, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc. This is where hobbits come from. They weren't supposed to be bad ass. That's the whole point.

Actually your title should be: I reject the entire premise that the LOTR is based upon...

It's kind of like watching Star Wars and saying Lucas got the Jedi wrong.

David didnt walk out there whimpering with his slingshot and then cry and hug with a o so bitch look on his face after he saved the day, cmon man. And Harry potter?!!!! He was a child for christs sake and top of that he still had way more balls and courage then any of the hobbits. Terrible examples

    Oh the Irony.

Call out another poster for terrible example's of comparison, after making terrible example's of comparison.

Do yourself a favour, actually look at how Tolkien described Hobbit's.

Hobbits are related to the race of Men.
Tolkien describes Hobbits as a type of human.

They are not meant to be a version of what you think a Gnome/Halfling is.
