No i get that, I just didn't like it. I guess the title of my post should be changed from tolkien did it wrong to I dont like what tolkien did
Colour me puzzled, but I guess you also wrote you don't read... so I don't quite follow the line of thoughts here Tolkien created the hobbits, based on a couple sources, if you find some time to read somewhere in your schedule, you can look it up (and for the record, you are totally wrong with the OP, especially with the sword in hand, but let's not rush ahead )
Then several decades later Gygax created the halflings ('cos he couldn't use hobbits for D&D, the Estate didn't approve). Those are different in quite a few aspect, more emphasis on the sneaky part, and more combat-focused, while hobbits only fight when they need to protect their lands.
Then a couple more decades till the rpg games on PC, based on the D&D version, but even more emphasis on the combat and the thieves part.
A few more years, PJ makes the movies (quality of them could be a topic of massive threads ). You watched the movies, then a glance at wow gnomes and other mmo halflings, and "tolkien did it wrong".
This makes me want to watch LOTR, and The Hobbit again.
I said in a earlier post the bilbo baggins movies were much better, Im not sure if it was martin freemans acting or just the bilbo character in general but it was wayyyyy better than the original movies portrayal of hobbits, IN MY VIEW/OPINION not tolkiens or anyone else's of course.

Riiiight. :awesome:
Yeah ill be the first to admit im no hobbit-gnome historian or D& D Grand wizard dungeon master lul. You got me there....... Im just a regular dude who likes nerd stuff and plays video games, I enjoy playing "little people" who are bad ass in games, I hate the way hobbits are portrayed in the LOTR movies. Thats all im saying.

Yep, that's what I was trying to point at Those "bad ass little people" are originated from the hobbit, and a result of more than 70 years of "evolution", following the actual interests and goals of the given era and medium. It's perfectly fine to like the new version more, or don't like the original version, but comparing the two is in a way dumb, especially based on the movies...
Your OP was like "hey, I don't drive myself, but just watched a movie which had Ford Model Ts, just look at the muscle cars in any Fast&Furious movies, how lame that Ford guy was, top speed at 40 mph, lol he did it totally wrong" :awesome:

Well, I think it's Bilbo's character, but it's also Peter Jackson's interpretation based on the books. So you're saying you didn't like Merry or Pippin either? First, did you watch all of the Lord of the Rings? Or did you just focus on Frodo and Sam? Remember Smeagol/Gollum was a Stoor Hobbit, it shows that not all hobbits are the same.

I see where you're coming from, but I have an opposite view.
From a game perspective, I understand why gnomes/halflings have equal abilities, walk or run the same speed, do the same damage, etc.
Referencing realism in a genre where magic spells and dragons might seem odd, but I would play a 'more realistic' game where the smaller races had lesser physical abilities due to their smaller stature - especially if the developers gave them skills and abilities that were unique.
I also feel the same way about class balance. Not every class should be equal in DPS, healing, mitigation, utility, etc.
But that's just me- and that's not how MMOs are made. I lose.

If you study literature and the history of legends, you'll learn about several types of heroes. One type is, a common person, or even less important than a common person, or someone small in size, to defeat the ultimate evil. Examples are David and the Goliath, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc. This is where hobbits come from. They weren't supposed to be bad ass. That's the whole point.
You are comparing DAVID from david vs goliath to a hobbit?! David didnt walk out there whimpering with his slingshot and then cry and hug with a o so bitch look on his face after he saved the day, cmon man. And Harry potter?!!!! He was a child for christs sake and top of that he still had way more balls and courage then any of the hobbits. Terrible examples
I am not comparing characters. You completely missed my point.
The idea is to show how someone much smaller than the ultimate evil, someone who can be scared, someone who is like common people, has the same problems and weakness like the common people, as I said, even worse than the common people, can beat the evil. It's about cowards finding courage. People don't know how to fight grab a sword. Not bad asses.

And you completely missed mine, Im acknowledging all the characters you mentioned were "weaker-smaller- underdogs" but David nor Harry potter were crying little bitches, who were overly dramatic while saving the day. Even the hobbits in victory were still crying, You can be a coward who finds courage without being a whiny little bitch in the end. Correct me if im wrong but weren't sam and frodo still wailing tears even as they stood at the foot of the pit where he tosses the ring in? I Mean cmon grow a goddam set. You saved the day
So 2 guys just marched across the entire land, into the heart of evil.. for the purpose of destroying the ultimate Ring, knowing that doing so would Doom them to die... and that's not heroic?

I actually considered them to be the most heroic of all. With absolutely no qualifications for such a quest, thrust into by powers outside their control, they pressed forward against all odds and were willing to give up their lives doing so.
I'm sure as heck not volunteering for a similar journey anytime in the near future. (or signing up to die with my friends)

Well to be fair, if Sam and Frodo had purchased a teleport to Mount Doom from the Middle-Earth cash shop, then crying at the and wouldn't be heroic.
thunderC is probably basing his ideas on the fact that he's never had to struggle to get to the end of an MMO. He doesn't know better.
I always tend to play a gnome or halfing in every mmo if its a option available. No not a dwarf , a GNOME -Halfling - or little person. I Find it interesting how dungeons & dragons and Warcraft portray gnomes and halflings as BAD ASS as opposed to Tolkien and lord of the rings. Type in halfling D & D and you will get all these pics of little tricksters with daggers and a devilish smile on their face. Type in WOW Gnome and you get the same along with magic wielding warlocks . Now look up Tolkien Hobbits and you get these little goofs with oversized feet who's shining achievement is shire pumpkin growing. Put a sword in their hand and they will likely cower in fear. I mean just the constant look of misery and cowardice on their face is rage inducing. I realize why i could never get into any of the LOTR movies, It was the hobbits. They are nauseating to watch.

You do realize that the entire fantasy side of the MMO genre is either directly or indirectly influenced by Tolkien, right?
Of course you're going to get beat up.
