Yea, notice he says "but the less said here the better". Aka drop the conversation. Plus hes just a CSR, not a very reliable source when it comes to worldwide laws.

Hmm. How do you legally obtain a pre-cu client? It's not available for download anymore.
If you buy the starter kit you have the pre-Cu client, JTL, and the CU patches and the NGE patches.
The emulator will patch over those so that you are reverted to a 12.1 client. The files are all there. Go look in your SWG directory sometime, you will see all the patches.
That is very interesting...I had no idea. Guess I need to pick up a SK.
Uhhh.. or use the one you already have. Re-install? You already bought the disks from $OE once.

If its in Europe they will have to deal with Interpol. Id rather eat broken glass and drink freon than have Interpol on my ass. And if they have it in a country that isnt part of Interpol thats just as bad, because that basically leaves them with just crackdown countries that WILL do something about it, wether or not it breaks their laws or not. They dont want that shit in their country.
**EDIT** Here is a list of all the countries that are members of Interpol. After you read that extensive list and notice there are no worthwhile countries left off the list, go and read up on everything they enforce. Then come back here and tell me this shit is legal.
Interesting... I remember meeting an old friend and telling me about a server for Lineage 2 in Argentina...
So I guess Interpol gives a shit about emulators...

Oh I agree completelly. They probably will find a way to probe it's illegallity... If they ever find it (together with so many other emulators out there).
You know, there is much more crime than what the police can find. I just hope they will be busier with real crimes and not with a nonsense like an emulator.
And for now emulators are alive (for other games), so, I predict we'll be tired of pre-cu swg emulators by the time they can do anything

Yea thats true, thats probably the only thing keeping them from being taken down. Interpol does alot of stuff like border watch, making sure people arent being transported illegally, drugs and weapons, that stuff. Emulators are at teh bottom im sure, but they do have a massive thing on the website about Intelecual Propety, so the enforcement IS there, its just not heavy.
And "LAW!" this response applies to your post as well, its bedtime for me.

Ok, from someone who has passed the bar exam, here's what I'm thinking....
So, we have group A, with a product that literally is copyrighted in over 200 nations on this planet due to international copyright agreements, having an earlier version of their product (or, shall we say an 'intelluctal property') being used by a second party(let's just call them, oh say party in a manner that can be used to usurp the party A's IP (intelluctal property). Well, according to copyright law, if party B recieves ANY funding, via donation or a set payment schedule, there can be a super nasty lawsuit brought by party A.
Now, while ultima or other 'small time' properties may not be able to convince a court that they have suffered undue losses due to an emu, a huge huge IP such as star wars can easily show that a tiny portion of their IP has been used to cause a monetary loss to party A's legal use of said IP. IE someone used the star wars characters in a manner that cost party A money, whether or not the emu server was profitable.
Seriously, before some people start playing internet lawyer, they really ought to think before they post.
Any SWG emuserver would cost the holder of the starwars intelluctal property and it's legal liscensees revenue. Any court in this country, and a few other nations, will slam on any attempt to usurp the star wars copyright for 'donations and or payments'.
Here it comes.... Duh, a donation is legally about the same as a payment is, especially since if it is required to fund the stealing of party A's iP....
Once again, as much as I miss the pre-nge SWG, I realize that any emuserver will be crucified by any trial lawyer on retainer by either Lucasfilm or SOE.
Seriously, any attempt to publicize an emuserver can be construed to be unlawfully stealing from Lucas's IP. If you made one and had just your super secret extra best friends play on it, on a non-public server, you might be able to win in a court of law. But any attempt to make a public emuserver will get slammed in a court of law.
Once again, duh. Making second party software DOES NOT include the right to steal the IP from anyone. It is not the same as making a stupid compatible toner cartridge or a game that can run on a platform (remember the RBI Baseball game for Nintendo?). Using SWG code to literally steal the 'thunder' from an IP on a public server would result in the emudevs either being shutting down, or shutting down and having huge fines adn /or jail time.

Wow...
Ok then oh-wise-one could you tell me please...HOW DOES THE EQ EMU GET AWAY WITH IT?
Why is it OK to rebuild EQ and have active servers. My point is if it were illegal, SOE would have have killed the project long ago? Why would they allow such a thing to continue if they had a legal leg to stand on?
After thinking about this for a bit (mostly while reviewing my last post, but not wanting it to be too long...) I think I 'get' what the pro-emu people are thinking. Screw Interpol, they are mostly after real criminals at the end of the day.
Interpol can let the highly paid lawyers of a huge IP such as star wars shut down the emu servers due to copyright infringment. Interpol is more aimed at non-public organizations such as a 'mafia' then they are aimed at punishing misguided computer geeks who just want to 'play a game'.
I guess if the technical issues of emuing a SWG game were resolved, we just have to let the lawyers from both sony and lucasfilm do their thing. Maybe a multi billion dollar corporation such as sony or lucasfilm has a bunch of incompetent lawyers, but I'm guessing they have some good ones...
Ok then oh-wise-one could you tell me please...HOW DOES THE EQ EMU GET AWAY WITH IT?
thanks
So, what intelluctal property does EQ emu take off from? Just Everquest?
Can't recall seeing everquest movies, tv specials, toothbrushes, etc...
Taking a previous issue of a game that is and of itself the IP is much different than taking from Star Wars, which has branched off into numerous formats and products.

Again, duh.
Regardless...
it is still the rightful property of SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT. Why then are they allowing their property to be "exploited" by outside entities. Can it be because they can do nothing about it? Can it be because it is perfectly legal?...I SAY YES IT IS!!!
My point is if SOE could do something about the EQ EMU...they would! They are far too greedy to let even one sub slip away to some Emulator.
BTW...Verent Entertainment Corp does still produce EQ items (comics, t-shirts, action figures ect.)
Ok, from someone who has passed the bar exam, here's what I'm thinking....
* Is that something like being the last one to fall after a lot of rounds in the tabern?
(Joooking! )
* Showing profit loss is easy for SoE at this moment ^^ * However it's their fault, not because of the emu's
* But the fact is, the emulator can be made without stealing the IP. When our client is connected it doesn't send pictures of Jabba, or the voice or solo, probably not even any name (and if it does it can be easily modified). * It just sends coordinates, values from tables, etc... (character class 5, with weapon class 8, in coordinates x,y,z, ham is 2800 2500 2500, etc...) * If they do it the right way, only the clients (us) could be found guilty because we would be using a client program made by SoE and modified by (hidden people who will not leave traces). *Still, it's a fact that people plays amulators (not me by the way, I would prefer SoE to stop being a bunch of idiots and giving us a classic server) so it's possible and it's a reality and it happends and it will happend. * It is illegal? Ok we accept it, but it's possible. For people waiting for the emulator that's not a problem at all. *At least it's not for people playing Lineage2, Everquest, WoW, etc... In those "alternative servers".
* But they are not using SWG code. It is in the servers. They should attack the servers to be able to take a sample of their code. This is just getting the same result with a different path. * Like someone said already, it's as when AMD makes a processor that is compatible with intel's code. They both can run the same code but internally they are different (now, because I remember the AMD 386 DX had copied even some bugs from the intel processor, like the POPAD instruction * I believe, so I guess they just copied the processor that time, but as a name based in a number doesn't seem to be protected by law, that's why they know call them Pentium, Athlon, etc...)
I actually know nothing of the EQ emu servers, and will have to look into it before I can say anything intelligent about how they manage to not get sued.
But, I still bet that we won't see SWG emuservers that people can log onto as we did with the actual game. It's not so much the game itself I'm thinking of (a game is of itself mere coding), it's the (shuddering as I type it) 'starwarsy and iconic' characters and locations that define what is an intelluctal property.
Han solo was around before the SWG was released, so was every other star warsy character that popped up. I have no idea where EQ is based (Ohio? Iceland? some made up realm?) but the game EQ made itself be known. If T-shirts came after the fact, as in why would I buy a t-shirt that says " EQ blah blah' before it's release, I'd stand in court and say the IP of EQ is based upon itself; since it's game code basically made it an IP, it IS NOT the same as star wars, whose game coding came over 20 years after the IP had been established.

WoW EQ MU RF EQ2 LIN LIN2 and I'm missing a few
So it can certainly be done
Also alot of the private servers do not use quests from the live servers so that gets them out of some trouble
YES!!!
Big bump for common sense...
Finally, someone who gets it. Not only is it possible...IT IS HAPPENING ALL OVER THE WORLD! It will happen with SWG EMU weather you want it or not...I can say it with 100% confidence.

It's OK brother...
I was in the dark at one time as well. The only things you need know are...
1) SWG EMU is real
2) SWG EMU is legal (Look at EQ EMU)
3) SWG EMU will work (the original devs were not GODS) It can be rebuilt.
3) SWG EMU will happen in the near future
The real test of all this is TIME!...It will tell!!!

As in yeah it is possible to create one , (One exists) . But Again that doesn't mean at all he is saying it is legal .

I can consider it , But IMO it doesn't add up . But to be honest I feel it is more like .
Don't talk about it here because , people who read will find out they can play the game for free .

Agree....
I know how you feel...It was hard for me to swallow at first to, but it's real. If EQ EMU can do it so can SWG EMU..I promise you. I will say one thing...It is a long road ahead! But we have nothing to loose by watching and waiting.
Alot still must happen and I think it will...TIME WILL TELL...that is the true test.
Also...
DAOC, AC, UO, and LIN2
All have or are curently developing emulators at this time.
So I guess Interpol gives a shit about emulators...
Yay!

Just because its there dosent make it legal. If Jane the whore has 4 pounds of cocaine lined up on her table in America does that make it legal?

Then Tell me how a company based in the UK (INTERPOL COUNTRY) can get away with the EVERQUEST EMU? Please explain because I want to know why the EQ EMU is still up and running after they "reversed engineered SOEs property and made this EMU. Tell me how please.
Regardless...We will see an SWG EMU at some point in the near future

Why would they allow such a thing to continue if they had a legal leg to stand on?
thanks

Thank you!!
The EMU is possible.
There is a EMU for:
WoW
EQ
MU
RF
EQ2
LIN
LIN2
and I'm missing a few
So it can certainly be done
Also alot of the private servers do not use quests from the live servers so that gets them out of some trouble
Ya got me there LAW!
