Much of buzz rose from LOTRO-going-F2P news. And as much as I 've heard problem isn't that F2P model is great and better.
After Moria there started descend of LOTRO, more and more they go away from Tolkien's lore, more and more they add copy-pasted instances and grind. Seems nice guys with brains and fantasy left company and instead Turbine hired some imagination-handicapped slaveprogrammists.
After Moria was first big leaving wave of players, then 2nd came with Lorian and 3rd (and nearly deadly) with stupid Mirkwood and Book 3. They don't gave out numbers but as whispered there are stayed very few from start-time 300K and those are too mainly lifetimers. So cash-flow is stopped and now Wallet Brothers (sry, Warner ones :P) requiring more and more money.
So in this conditions we can't expect Free is some-how prolonged trial but it must start to milk customers now and hard!
And yea, those new players running to game after F2P are mostly those "I'm rich ya dirt must like me and my buyed sword" who wanna buy win and best.
But that is like we allow on Olympic games to those athlets wanna pay some big cash to freely use dopings and drugs.

Afraid of Free to Play? Hardly.
F2P destroys one of the features of a MMO that I love the most... everyone starts out equal and defines themselves by their own abilities, NOT the size of the real life wallet. In other words in a old style, traditional monthly subscription MMO it does not matter who you are or what you are... you are a Player and that is what matters.
In F2P, and especially F2P with Cash Shop, the real world has way too much influence on the virtual world of a MMO, and with that the community is forever split into Castes. In the old MMOs the only Castes that existed were whether you sucked, you did ok, you were good, or you were awesome as a Player. I actually agree with that arrangement of social "pecking" order and even though I fit in the first category I mentioned I support the old traditional style of funding a MMO.
It is as simple as that... I enjoy certain features of the old MMOs that most Players now do not enjoy and they even ridicule. Frankly most Players NOW want MMOs to have cash shops and convenience features, swift travel, all that nonsense...to me these features are Dev sponsored ways for Players to cheat, pure and simple. I know that not all of us have the time we used to log into our favorite MMO, but dangit all MMOs have always been "All about" Time, until recently. Now it seems Time is hardly spent at all in MMOs at all and the Publishers STILL get your money.
I want MMOs to be the way they used to be. Players starting equal without real life influences such as a credit card instead of "Free", Premium", and "VIP". Give me the corpse runs, give me running for an hour to get to a quest, give me the feeling that I could live a new life in a new land... the land of the old style MMO that is quickly disappearing.
I won't get what I want. The new generation populating MMOs now will see to that. Them and there credit card/debit card sitting by their keyboard.
I am the Player that wonders... "What the %#*& just happened?!" ............... "I Believe... There should be NO financial connection or portals between the Real World and the Virtual in MMOs. I do not have fun playing games with cash shops.
Really doesn't bother me if you want to call that fear or good sense or Santa Claus.
Seriously, why are people so afraid of the F2P model?
You're a troll, and follow proudly in the footsteps of mmorpg.com (covered top to bottom in advertising for free-to-play games).
"Fear" isn't an issue. "Personal taste" is.
I don't like mangoes, but that doesn't mean I'm afraid of them. It just means that I don't like them.
But if I don't like free-to-play games, I'm apparently a fraidy-cat who is hopelessly stuck in the past.
How incredibly rude!
OMG how dare they (MMORPG.COM) try to make money as a business by advertising for the companies who are willing to pay for it....
Its MMORPG.COM, not P2PMMORPGONLY.COM, get the fk over it.
And like it or not, most anti-F2P people are stuck in the past and judge F2P games based on very limited or outdated information on what F2P games USED to be like, not what many of them currently are.

Get your facts straight.
I've no objection at all to mmorpg.com running advertising.
I do, however, object when they aggressively promote free-to-play games and/or microtransactions in their articles. Some of their articles are fine, but others really cross a line. Eg.
Then, let's ask ourselves what this decision likely indicates about the western free to play market. Which of these scenarios seems to make more sense?
(a) The F2P market is small and unimportant, just like its detractors make it out to be.
(b) The F2P market is considerably larger and more important than they think it is.
People who don't like microtransactions/free-to-play games etc. couldn't care less that there are free-to-play games on the market. They just don't want to play them.
This is what is known as a straw argument. You falsely ascribe a particular argument or view to people you disagree with, and then argue with that fictitious view. It's a lot easier than actually dealing with reality.
So I say shame on mmorpg.com for publishing rubbish like this.

Either I'm having fun, or I'm not.
If the game has a cash shop, I'm not having fun.
So don't play. It is not like you don't have a choice. Fear is totally irrational.

Seriously... lol
Anyway, f2p is where games go to die.
People that sub to a p2p game don't want their game to die. People that want only f2p have no thought of impact on the existing game community... just like most game companies dumbed down their existing games or made new dumb games to please groups outside that particular game community.
Lots of peeps calling for other p2p games to go f2p. It's bad enough the devs/publishers gave into the calls for dumbing down their games, which in the end only drove away existing subs not pick up new ones, but now they call for the games to be free ontop of it all. Plan to use the item shops to these games? lol no way, then they are not freeee. They already have a sub to WoW after all, just want something else to play around with until the next expansion is out as content driven theme parks have rides that stop.
After all, the debate from the early days is that mmo's suck, and need to be like Diablo, and well Diablo is f2p/non-sub and should be considered an mmorpg "omg wtf pay a sub?!?!?! LOL ...well maybe for a Blizzard game". To 85% of WoW players that never bothered with any other mmo's really, those games just suck and need to change, but they still don't play them when they do change... but might if they are free with no real push to pay. But then in time ...well they will be demanding the game companies to pay them for playing. When is the next WoW expansion release? Watch, it'll quiet down for a time, always does.

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
There goes the only original sentence in your post. Paid-to-play, yeah, that's so gonna be that ban of all F2P's.
Hmm.....now work on that payment model instead of bashing F2P senselessly, and show me f2p haters do have brains.
The only payment model that has potential to beat free-to-play is paid-to-play, seriously.
