I don't know that I will call it a "disaster", but I do believe that people will be disappointed with this game, but I also think it will appeal to people who haven't played World of Warcraft before. If players have played WoW before, I wouldn't even spend time screwing around with SWTOR.
I've been very skeptical about the game; especially since the 2x cinematics, and the latest trailer from GDC I thought was sure to quell excitement for the game, but so far I haven't seen much of backlash for the cruddy trailer [at least space looked nice].
I hope the game does fantastic, but it's not the right game for me, and I don't think it's going to be the right game for many people.
Um....how will it be a disaster..Its star wars and its Bioware. Did you watch the 16 minute gameplay clip? The game looks spectacular. Why is it that everyone is obsessed with insane Crysis like graphics in a mmorpg..... Developers have to cater to a vast amount of different computers in order to make money. That is what World of Warcraft has done and that is why the are so successful, because the graphics look good and any shit box can play. I think the graphics look perfect and allow more time to be spent content over sprites.

Speaking as someone who played WOW I can say that this game doesn't look ANYTHING like WOW.

That's because the majority of us who saw the latest trailer thought it looked awesome. Why would there be a backlash against something that was very popular?
I hope the game does fantastic, but it's not the right game for me, and I don't think it's going to be the right game for many people.
To each his own. As long as the game continues on the track it is and Bioware doesn't make any radical changes I think it will be the right game for the people who have actually been looking forward to it. The ones who never liked it to begin with won't, but then again there was no pleasing them unless you wiped the slate clean and started over, which is out of the question. Hope you find an MMO that is right for you.
Cover system while playing as a smuggler healer this weekend, I had my doubts. I kept popping up as I was healing and essentially moving from my self-cover shield.
Playing as the IA on the origin world, if felt awesome. It worked extremely well.
I must say, after PAX... I'm scared to even think about buying it.
Not only that, but it seems like there will be another release date delay, that means they know something is wrong. Will it be a disaster? no, fanbois already guarantee it being self-sustainable. Will is be an awesome MMO because Bioware is making it... no they shot themselves in the feet. It will simply fail. That means, after 3 months, the game will try to recuperate its losses.
That game is pure plagiarism off of other games. Why games? Star Fox 64 isn't a MMO, it's a game.
I think EA having its name on a MMO is a disaster. It looks like they've even manage to do the impossible... which is make an IP like star wars fail. It isn't out yet however, they may still pushback the release and reinvent the whole gameplay, but I would doubt that. We've almost all played WoW, most of us are looking for something new, not just the bad reskinned.

Yep, this. I played it. The game is WoW in SW clothes.
Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.

I want some of what you're having! I fail to see how you can delay a release date when an official concrete date ever existed. You can push back your own expectations when you see that it won't be released on the timeframe you expected, and for that one can expect to be disappointed.
You can not watch the flashpoint videos from PAX and not see they have made dramatic improvements in all aspects from the Imperial flashpoint demo. Graphics, animations and overall polish have dramatically improved. It is not ready obviously, but I personally would rather them delay it until next year than release it now. Best thing is, it doesn't appear to have the typical EA rush job like Dragon Age 2 had. I think EA is letting this one get what it needs before it goes out.
And anything that has hotkey combat will be compared to WoW. For most people, WoW is the first MMORPG or even RPG that they have played, therefore it makes sense that they would compare what they see to what they know.
As a more solo MMO player I have really liked what I have seen in the videos. I dont have high hopes for the space combat but I would rather have a tunnel shooter than nothing. The graphics look ok to me and the voicework is a nice feature for someone like me who actualy likes reading the mission text.
It cant be any worse than the crap that has been released in the last 12 months like STO or ER
"Sean (Murray) saying MP will be in the game is not remotely close to evidence that at the point of purchase people thought there was MP in the game." - SEANMCAD
I think anyone thinking the game will be a disaster is just wishful thinking as someone that can't stand to see this game garnering the hype it has over their preferred game.
Love it or hate it, this game will do well. I'm so tired of the WoW clone shtick here, its like the average complainers attack to discredit the game on all counts. Just watching the videos, if you actually pay attention you can see the flow of combat is quite different. Some of my favorites was watching the bounty hunter take cover from enemies (along with some pretty great enemy AI in that video, enemies were taking cover and using the cover system, charging the player when they were low on health, pretty great overall) along with some of the best animations I've ever seen in an MMO for many of the characters. (though the starting world videos they only have a couple skills, but the Taral V video shows some amazing stuff.
Hey I'm not saying everyone has to like it, but even at this stage the polish is so incredibly high, the scope is so broad, and the development is SO solid, (not to mention the popularity is through the roof) I just can't see how people could consider it a disaster.

What's so cool about the cover system? it looks awkward as hell. the character is not even in cover? and need a blue icon on top of the character.. so the game is so visually poor at indicating you what is going on, that you need a ghost replica of your character to tell you if your character is in or out of cover.
Also I dont see what you are saying about the flow of combat. it looked like a freakin jedi with a lightsaber was not "specced" to be able to take damage. To me that sounds beyond lame. That is not heroric or star wars. That's just throwing glowsticks for fan service and selling it short.
It looks nothing like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMgUkbWsRBY < this is how their Force powers should be. Thats how smooth the animations should be. thats how action packed the combat should be(still govered by stats, class, equipment), thats how cover should be, thats how the UI should be(not filling half the bottom of the screen).
The game looks great but the combat looks slow, unresponsive and like WoW. your character walks slow, it looks weird attacking while moving, I haven't seen people dodge, roll, evade or jump into cover or anything like that. reactions to knockdowns look weird, being stunned looks out of place.
even targeting players seem awkward, and they way you position the camera. seems like the characters are permantly drunk.
Stopped reading after the first 50 posts, but I've seen no compelling argument that SWTOR will fail.

Hu ? Delays ?!? Its still spring 2011, for all I know ? Which means it may release as late as Jun 20 and still be on schedule.
only if its due for release in summer of 2011, which.. btw, is from april... i think its pretty obvious that the game is being delayed again, all we're waiting for is the official confirmation of the new release date. From some of the current indications, im really wondering if the game will be released this year even, but.. my guess is that they will probably aim for a November/Christmas release date... barring further problems of course.
I have to agree with you Adamantine on both accounts. As a matter of fact the footage and player comments I saw from PAX made me even more sure this game will do well and I am trying really hard to curb my enthusiasm for this game.

Sorry Phry, but YOU need to do some research. Summer does not officially start in the Northern Hemisphere until sometime between June 20 - 22 each year. It varies slightly, between those dates from year to year, but never goes all the way back into April. So Adamantine was correct when he said the game could launch on June 20 and still make the previously announced deadline.

I too am glad to live in england for our summers start at bst. June 20-22 is about the longest daylight day we have, summer soltise i think the name is.
I think most of the people are posting this with the recently released footage of that instance.
I'm looking forward to the game, but I'm not following the news whatsoever on this game. If there's a seemingly interesting movie, I'll check it out. That said, I was quite surprised that the game looked a bit... 'dull'. The guy was very easily entertained about stuff we had already seen before.
Then again, it also said in big letters in the right corner "WORK IN PROGRESS". So I still have good hopes for it. To quote some famous developer about some (in)famous MMO, "It's done when it's done."

Like I said, do the research. Scientifically speaking the albeit "arbitrary" start date of summer is some wheres between June 20 and June 22 each year. It has to do with the earths travel around the sun and all. Now we may have different regions that summer starts earlier according to actual weather conditions (I am in Hawaii for example and we have about a 10 month "summer" followed by a rainy 2 month "spring"), but the truth is IF they manage to release SWTOR by June 20th, then they have lived up to their earlier projections. Considering that they have previously stated they are only interested in doing a 1 month live beta event, This is still a possibility. Whether or not it actually happens, we will have to see.

Seeing it in action in the flashpoint and people using it, the cover system doesn't look strange to me at all. It looks like it works rather well, and people playing the smuggler for instance, used the cover system and said they were able to get the hang of it and handle it. The character themselves are actually IN cover after using it. Meaning that getting behind cover no matter which class you play will break LoS, smugglers and imperial agents have bonuses to that as they can use cover more effectively.
Don't know which videos you are or are not watching, but there are some great videos of people playing Jedi out there, and playing them well. They moved quickly and took out multiple oppenents just as fast.
I don't see the combat or movement being slow at all, jedi close gaps extremely quickly, rolling behind cover happens quite fast and you can roll from a pretty long ways away.
Really I think you're nitpicking way too much just because you don't like the idea that people are enjoying the information they are seeing. People will see what they want to see regardless of what the developers are showing, or what players that have actually played it are saying. You want this game to be more like a single player title? Play a single player game, then you'll get what you're looking for, for sure.
No game will be perfect, and as this game obviously disappoints you as you seem to have unrealistic expectations, you may as well get used to so much praise for something you'll never understand.

General Discussion -> Officially Official PAX East 2011 thread
For the record, at approximately 10:02AM this morning the line to play was 11 hours long.
Thats pretty good for a game.
Link can be found here: http://www.swtor.com/community/devtracker.php
Don't know what that means for game at launch but it is a good sign that people are willing to wait 11 hours to play a game.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Q4 that is all
No space flight is a dealkiller for me.
And no, I don't consider a "rail shooter" space flight.
This is why the game will be a big fat waste of time. Can people still bring themselves to play this utterly devoid of fun way of combat mechanics?
Seriously star wars is about the pew pew and firing lasers and shit not auto attack crap.

"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
There is no auto attack in this game.
