the art style is excellent and the graphics look fine and hardly outdated to me. this coming from a guy who's used to games with top notch graphics like BF3, Crysis, The Witcher 2, etc. IGN has the best footage so far that i've seen as far as graphics go - http://uk.ign.com/videos/2012/03/27/guild-wars-2-elementalist-commentary
for all we know, that might not even be maxed out yet.
I don't care. The graphics of every game do not have to exceed the graphics of those that came before it. It only need to be up to a decent standard (which GW2 is above and beyond) and the gameplay has to be great. Both of those are true, so good enough for me. I'll take an average looking MMO I can't put down over a gorgeous one that bores me to tears.

That last comment reminds me of TERA
Oh no, TERA was totally not what I was referring to. I swear. *innocent whistle*

maybe not the best graphic game. but i think its 1 of the best Looking game of this years
Thanks for the Vids. Never saw either and really enjoyed them. As a member for so many years, I see these threads and its like the same thing copied and pasted from just about every game prior to release. You see the same Pros and Cons, the same graphics versus artistry, the same Asian versus Western, zzzzzzzz.
Maybe I just know what to expect from an MMO, but this game looks like a world Ill be looking around exploring and viewing the sites. I dont care about polygon counts, etc..all I know is that to me it looks fantastic for an MMO. I don't know if its the artistry or the graphics, it just looks..I dont know...charming...just like when I was in Elywnn Forest for the first time..or when I hit Rivendell in LOTRO. It just looked like it all fit for that year.
Yes, I wish the draw distance was a little better, yes, I wish when they run it didn't look like they were running slowly around with poop in their pants...but to me the look is a solid A.
Look again, game looks nice an all, but it has flaws, I don't understand why people can't be objective about things they like, the thread is talking about dated graphics, so lets discuss whats not dated and what is.
The trees ARE dated.
A lot of the rock textures are not, the textures on the characters and their frames are not dated at all, they look very sharp and crisp.
There are A LOT of jaggies, a LOT. Why has no on mentioned this?
Also, alot of the choices made, in regards to graphics, are made with older PC's in mind as PC owners don't even keep their Windows OS updated, let alone hardware.
Furthermore, it's still in beta and we've seen games at this stage of development undergoe changes to textures and such.
Additionally, there are alot of advancements in the newer games that aren't easily detectable unless you have a side-by-side reference to older graphics, like AA and the like. You'll also notice the mist effects that aren't seen in older games. You have to realize that these things are incredibly taxing on even the newer GPU's.
Well then maybe you are just not liking the aesthetics. Which is way more important than graphics. Like WoW graphics are ok with me, but the games aesthetics are cartoonish and silly from my veiw.
Some of the best graphical games can look ridiculous if the asthetics are not well done.
I've always felt WoW, in the past few years, has had amazing graphics within their aesthetic. I hate their aesthetic with a burning passion so I just can't play the game. But the graphics are simply amazing for the load they put on your computer.
I thought GW1 did an amazing job with graphics. That was a game I could play on the road on a non-gaming laptop and do okay in both frame-rate and graphics quality.
I'm sure when they finally get around to optimizing the graphics for release, they'll be fine. Certainly better than many other so-called AAA MMOs released in the past few years.
I always argue about graphics with my best friend, who seems hell-bent on ignoring any game that isn't aethsthetically incredible, but he's really looking forward to GW2 and so am I. In fact, I think the world shown so far in its limited state is gorgeous. On the flipside, TERA's graphics are undoubtedly more detailed, but didn't grab either of us. I don't think graphics will ever matter as much as gameplay, and for good reason.

No one mentions jaggies because most people realise jaggies are related to your anti-aliasing settings and are related to your video card. Some recent games have not offered anti-aliasing, which makes jaggies and issue. GW2 offers anti-aliasing support, so it is not an issue.
I agree that trees are a minor weak spot, due to inconsistancy of the bark texturing. Some look great, others not so much.
BTW, I like the way leaves are rendered, it is supposed to look "painterly".
Here is a screen that shows pretty good bark texturing as well as anti-aliasing, pretty clean lines IMO.
So developers should focus on making the game look good before making sure the mechanic are balanced and working? That is just silly I do not want to play another game like Aion :P. I prefer my games to be fun to play, instead of look good. Their are a good number of games with low end graphics that have good game mechanic minecraft, terraria, torchlight, just to name a few.
I do not get why some people expect mmo's to have to most realistic graphics. A majority of casual playerbase are using older computers, that is why they focus on improving the high end graphics last. Besides the graphics look good enough to me.
Another screen of Lion's Arch. Notice the detail of the textures:

To bad, the new mmorpg video trough divinity reach doesnt look like this even 1%. GW2 Graphics looks so low
Can anybody confirm that they use in closed beta low quality package?
There are some graphical restrictions, but I don't think any amount of pumping of graphics can make Divinities Reach look like Lions Arch. Of course this is just my uneducated guess.
The real killer is that the graphics are subpar compared to new games, but that it doesn't even run that well for low-end systems.
You're so cute!
Of course I am, but it's just another thing anet promised that they didn't deliver on.
Game is not out yet. They've said that they're optimizing the build. Now if the game is out and it's still horribly optimized, then they did break a promise. However, this is also why there's no release date yet. The game will be done when it's done.

Why is it that if anet makes an empty promise you guys eat it up immediately, but if there are clear and present flaws within the game you guys go "oh it's not complete yet".

Not only am i in love with the art style of the game but even the menus are hot.

My question is, knowing how good the game looks and the general buying habits of MMO players, does anyone really think graphics will affect sales?

This screen does a good job of showing how detailed this game can be. Notice also the lack of "jaggies". (Yes, this is a screenshot).

Who needs good graphics if game looks so beautiful as this one?

If graphics in GW2 are sub-par, what is par?
