One penalty I think is a must in this game for dying is inventory loss.
Temp stat loss, temp skill loss, and all that other junk is just an annoyance. Losing items will make you think twice about doing something stupid and risky.
I wouldnt mind running across and old faded Coca-Cola billboard in game. But if theres a brand new billboard in the middle of the busiest town with a real company on it, I think it'd take away from the atmosphere.

Lowered abilities will just have the same affect as not beign able to log on. Nobody will want to do anything besides stand in town square causing lag, in fear of dying again for another ability loss. Things like this also turn people off of games.…
