AoC Environemt Rumor!?

PkhBaskoPkhBasko Member UncommonPosts: 59

I have recently been told that the AoC Environment will not be totally free to roam around. I have heard that there will be a very straight/set path or something along those lines to follow. Is this a true statement?

Actually I am pretty sure the beginning is set path then after that you enter the mmo experience.

  • downtoearthdowntoearth Member Posts: 3,558

    that im not sure of

heh but i know you cant go every where you see like a free roam game theres like hidden walls i guess but ig uess you should just try it when it goes open beta /release just dont pre order

I don't mind a little bit of path restricting, I just hope its not like Guild Wars. That game had such a beautiful enviroment that was completely unimmersive or believable as a real living world.

Yea i've read you other comment on the game, your just a Troll on a Stick... or did I mean Turd...

Hey OP wait till Open Beta around MAY 1st 2008 and judge for yourself, then pre order if you want. Thats what i will be doing

The pathing apparently  is not as bad in some other games, but I bet you the environment looks better than anything else coming out this year when you see it. For me that adds greatly to immersion.

Besides Aion / War / Lich king all coming out fall 2008, TCoS no US publisher. No harm in giving beta a go then keeping tabs on the game.

After my scarring experience with Vanguard(which i'm still not over, ugh) its best to pre-order any mmo unless you've been in the beta and are convinced.

With all of the interviews around, there is something that is repeated over and over.  It has to do with how the developers want the player to explore.  Well, unless they are lying, I would have to imagine that you'll have the ability to roam around anywhere you please.

Aye, Unless you have sound evidence that the game will be what your looking for, don't preorder untill you see reviews and outlines of what the game really is. If you have a friend who bought it, ask them to let you give it a spin/watch them play before you buy it.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

I am betting levels 1-20 are probably more confined seeng as they intend on those levels being more of a training ground type of gameplay. Free Roaming probably opens up gradually as you level up, becoming fully open when you complete 20.

    Just a guess though...

Perhaps you're right, but at least I have good reason. I used to be something of a die hard fan of Age of Conan.

    Oh how wrong I was.

Check the vidoes out on the community website.  All of them..

If you call you and your group scaling mountainsides restrictive then little can appease you but, ofcourse, there'll be places that funnel your party into a fight or be closed in by steep embankments.

The least restrictive game maps I'd ever played, were in SWG, and even then you couldn't jump up.  So getting up on buildings roof was near immposible.  As for the rest, there's always the building ledge to far,etc..., but if your thinking 2D mapping restrictive, then it's absolutely not the case.  Again, the vids should give you a better feel for it.

    * I do not need to know how to make a better game than you. I just need to know how to cancel my subscription. -Antarious(a slight misquote but the sentiment remains)

    Its kinda like Guild Wars.

You cant actually roam free around everywhere.

  • throckmortonthrockmorton Member Posts: 314

From the looks of the videos it is not as linear as Guild Wars, but neither is it an endlessly expansive world.

The first 20 levels will be very linear though, and the focus will be storytelling not traditional MMO gameplay.

From the looks of the videos the environments ARE very detailed and downright beautiful -- more so than any other game I've seen.

Perhaps they chose to limit free roaming to go with the collision feature. Ex. The 300 Effect. Fending off many foes while fighting at the mouth of a narrow hall or valley. They mention this in one of the Dev Diaries I believe.

The model is actually more closely resembling Anarchy Online, their other MMO, which incidentally happens to be free as well (part of it anyway), so you can check it out if you so wish. Another title with similar mechanics is EQ2.

Basically all areas in the game are zones that you load when you pass through a big gate or when you use the caravan or ship travel methods. These zones are shared by everyone so when you visit a new area, you are entering an area with all the people that entered before you. The transition however is not seamless, so there is a loading screen each time you change a zone. Even some dungeons are zones, thus build to accommodate more than one group of adventurers.

Then you have instancing. Some group and raid dungeons are created in such a manner so as to be played by one group of individuals. There is also a main quest line (similar to LOTRO) that you play for the most part on your own. A big part of the tutorial area as well is instanced (what people call the single player part of the early game).

In terms of time, the tutorial area is rather restricted in size, thus you'll see yourself zoning quite a bit. I'd say zoning happens once every 10-30 minutes, depending on the activity you're engaged in and the familiarity with the territory (you'll obviously zone a lot less if you take all the quests you can for a specific territory instead of one at a time and then return to deliver). Once you leave the tutorial area, the zones grow considerably in size (2-4 times) and the need to zone drops considerably as well (2-3 hours on average).

I'm not familiar with Guild Wars, but from what people describe it, the PvE areas are instanced (aka only you or your group) and only the cities are social hubs. This is not the case in this game, expect player interaction anywhere in the world for good or bad (bad if you find FFA PvP bad I guess).

No free roam? is this game trying to be groundmaking or f***ing archaic?

I hope it's only a rumour because having no free roam is pathetic tbh.

*edit* I just read the above post, hope there isn't too much loading in between zones, and I hope he's right about a large free roaming enviroment.

    O_o o_O

Each zone will be about  the size of outlands from wow im guessing. Or even the larger zones like Kalimdor. Im not worried at all.

You can thank all the people who constantly complain that WOW has crappy graphics, every time someone complains about WOW's crappy graphics (which to me are not crappy just artistic and simplistic to m ake it work smooth, blizz is very smart) another uber ultra realistic graphics fest game comes out that sucks the big one.

What do you mean by  "roam free around everywhere?"

If possible try to describe it with a game example.

    Thanks

I am old schooler, gameplay over graphics will always make more money. Keep complaining, bitch and moan all you want but its true.

The only difference to zoned games like EQ2 is that you have no loading in the cost of so ugly and outdated graphics. In practice WoW is typical zoned, level oriented MMORPG in which "mm" and "rpg" is so weak that you just can named it "O" :P :)

I realy hope that AoC will be a step forward in contrast of latest so named MMORPG's.

    Oh yeah thats right, umm EQ2 has such nice attractive graphics lol, sorry if you think that game or Vanguard looks good you need an eye exam dude!. Sorry but I would rather look at GW and WOW then EQ2 or Vanguard something is just not right about those games graphics. LOTRO has nice environment graphics but the characters look and animate very oddly. AOC does look great but umm for many people it will not lol, you'll see. { Mod Edit - NDA }

Ah god oh well let everyone find out soon enough I guess.

Have a great time there, lol.
