There is absolutely nothing wrong with what you say. Yea I am a fan of the game, I believe a hell of alot of people will enjoy it for its content and mechanics. I've never told anyone to go pre-order to fork out money or whatever. I'm a staunch defender of try before you buy, please for the love of god, I hope nobody takes my enthusiasm for blind supportiveness of buying the game without trying it first. I do honestly believe a hell of alot of people will enjoy the game. But at the end of the day is you lot who should make your own mind up. Not someones elses factless opinions on your behalf and whats worse is you dont even know them!! (not you shannia)
I have recently been told that the AoC Environment will not be totally free to roam around. I have heard that there will be a very straight/set path or something along those lines to follow. Is this a true statement?
Wait... so some of you are cancelling pre order based on this statement.... WOW. What happened to all the negative people who always say never buy anything without trying it first?? So people cancel pre orders (like all 4 of you) then wont even look at the game? thats too funny, I mean, its worthy of a comedy sketch. What you trying to say exactly? No one is obligated to buy this game or keep their pre-order. This bit of news of which has even been posted in the AoC forums is more then enough for those who like open environments to cancel any pre-orders and wait for reviews by players at launch.
Why should anyone feel obligated to reward Funcom with a pre-order anyways? No one needs to keep a pre-order if they find out news about a feature they really dislike being in the game. Thats a free trial. I cancelled my pre order but it wasn't just because of the "invisible wall issue" for me. There were other issues too. Mostly, I couldnt believed I pre ordered a MMO in the first place. That's usually a no no for me considering about 80% of all MMOs turn out to be crap.

Eh, So.....you basicly agree within just about everything Avery said or has said before lol wtf?,
I've heard that the restrictions are not invisible walls or anything like that, more like set paths often restricted by natural barriers. There are smaller instances where you can run pretty much wherever you like if roaming around is your thing.
I'll pass the advice given to me, don't pre order. Give it a try first before launch.
This is my first post on this forum... usually I just pass by forums on this website to just get the basic jist of a game (in this case whether or not to go with AoC or WAR when it comes out) but this topic is really interesting to me.
The reason free roaming works for a game like WoW is because the graphics are very simplistic and mapped in their own seperate ways. As for example, characters are not "unique"; they follow an exact design. The same goes for their environment, like the trees, and the terrains. Therefore the game runs almost seamlessly on almost any platform, yet the graphics aren't "too" flawless (I actually applaud Blizzard for their simplistic yet somewhat detailed designs, they're very intelligent).
What I feel AoC will be like is similar to how games like City of Heroes/Villains works. They had a highly immersive character design and greatly detailed environments. Because of this, they had to make different "zones". The zones were certainly not small (if comparing to WoW it would be somewhere along the lines of the size of the Barrens for each) and if you wished to continue onward, all that you really needed to do was just wait for the load screen, which usually was a very short wait. The only difference between "free-roaming" and "zones" is that for zones, everything has much more detail and runs at the same quality, your computer just has to go through more preparation to get through certain areas, which to me is worth it. I'm still not sure whether I'm going with AoC or WAR but atm I'm leaning more towards AoC, simply because it looks a lot more beautifully detailed graphic-wise and I absolutely adore the character creation system... not to mention I'm just sick of WoW and anything really similar to it (I realize WAR technically came before WoW, but I've just burnt out on elves and midgets, kthxbai).
CoX's zones are nothing like AoC zones, the latter are much more restricted. While CoX's zones are smaller than WoW's, you can pretty much go wherever you want. This is not the case with AoC, think more like CoH's sewer system.

I appreciate the comparison, but forgive me for sounding trollish, how do you know what AoC's zones are like?

I'm not sure if you were asking me or Krytical, forgive me but I don't use forums very often...
...I was merely making an assumption based off of the videos, interviews, and articles about the game released from the developers working at AoC, though I haven't been able to play the beta yet, so it's really just trusting what the devs are saying about their own game. I never said "it will be this" or "it will be that", it's really just an educated guess of what I think they plan on doing with the game.
I imagine EQ2 or WoW is more close to it. You move semi-freely inside the zone but if you transport to another zone, you will start up at the same place as everyone else. Wheny you die you start up at the same place. Fine in PvE, highly exploitive in PvP.

What is the death penalty? And when I die, do I just respawn somewhere I saved before or do I run back to my body as a ghost or something, anyone know?

Will there be corpse runs and, if not, how will we regain our bodies? Also, how long will it take to rez and be back in a battle for PvP?
This is something we’re still messing with in beta at the moment, so these words should not be held as Gospel truth, but as a statement of where we are now. At the moment, there are no corpse runs, but once you return to the land of the living at a resurrection point, there is a debuff (stat hits) for dying. This debuff can be taken away by running back to where you died, finding your tombstone, and clicking on it. This works the same in PvP, so it would only be a few minutes before you’re back in the fray. However, the death penalty can be quite significant. If one guy has a huge death penalty and the other does not, the guy with the death penalty will probably lose the fight (all things being equal, of course).
Hmm, OK, so for now we know that the world zones are instanced and that you cannot leave starter area until hitting level 20ish, correct? Personally I wasn't too excited how even the fans of the gmae described startign area as more of an interactive story then anythign else. It might be I misunderstood something, information is rather thin at this time and quite often contradictory.
NDA is in place so details are blurry but if I understood correctly freeroaming is highly conditional and limited to certain zones/subzones. Invisible walls might be in place but more likely a player is "channeled" with natural and impassable obstacles (that bascially serve as visible walls).
Probably the issue here is how much channeling is there.
People this is not a rumor, the invisible walls are true; also there is what we call a high level of geometric instancing in this game. You people need to wake up, it's a month before release and they still have the NDA in tact, and the NDA will continue to be in tact until the release.
AOC is not ready for release, it's buggy and even when you run the game using a 8800 Ultra you get rubberbanding and a high amount of lag; were talking about 15FPS here on high end systems. There's not enough content, PVP drops suck, Guilds who have the "Carebear" city tucked away in an instance can enter the boarder kingdoms, PvP guilds that build a city in Boarder Kingdoms can't go and retalliate against Carebears because dumb Funcome it would be good idea to give special privilages and protections to Carebear guilds.
Ok I thank you for taking time off your precious schedule to inform us of the state of the game. Now that we all know that the game is a mess nobody will buy it and all pre-orders will be cancelled. Thanks for saving us time and money.
No preorder. Wait for OB or the end of NDA or for ""Its looks like there will be an IGN weekend special, Invited Open beta (just like war's), There will be thousands of buddy keys out there and a trial at somepoint"
The NDA regarding the beta will never be lifted. That's a standard EULA featured on their previous games as well. So claiming that "they still haven't lifted the NDA so the game is crap" doesn't mean much in this particular case. For whatever reason, either legal, financial or even as an arbitrary internal decision, they will not lift it. Ever. Thus the status of the NDA is not an indication of the status of the beta.
"... this is not a rumor, the invisible walls are true ..." is the first indication that either you're not in beta, or you're feeding people with misinformation. You could say that you don't like zoning and the place has too many. You could say that the zones are not too big according to you. You could say that zoning takes too long or it distract from the immersion. You could say all these and you could have a valid reason to be concerned. The presence of invisible walls is not a reason to be concerned really.
I run a 8800 ultra, things are just fine, thank you.
Tell your friends, your neighbours, the happy happy admin of whoever is hosting the "NDA breaks" to stop feeding you with outdated information. It makes all the people that spread the doom gospel as truth look bad.
I believe city and keep building are well documented. Just because you don't like the concept, doesn't make it universally sucky, sorry. Given the member numbers, all guilds will be able to create a player made city. Owning and keeping a keep is another story. Your whole description about cities and keeps makes me wonder if you really know what you're talking about about this aspect of the game. In other PvP games it was enough to demoralise the members to destroy a weak guild. You can do that here, so I'm not sure what you're on to.
PvP drops are not decided yet. I bet they will follow the will of the majority of the PvP crowd. Personally I hope it's resources, gear are not that important, but that's just me.
Finally, content. Seriously, they had promised an arm and a leg and the closer it gets to release, the more I'm inclined to believe that they are actually going to deliver most of it. No other game tackled that many things for release date, well, besides vapour-games. Looking however at the state of other previous MMOs during their release, they seem to be on the right track, content wise. I bet the only ones that may be disappointed are the ones that will expect a freshly released MMO to have the same content as a game XX years after it's release.
Don't believe a word of what I said however. Not without trying for yourselves. If you're unsure, wait for the open beta, the buddy keys or free trials that are bound to crop up at some point. Make your own mind on whether you like the game or not, don't let us fools con you into believing what we say
You are indeed right, they got burned once by a very bad release. To their credit they turned the game around and made one of the best futuristic MMOs out there. Unfortunately, they never recovered from that early loss of momentum.
Whether they learned by that mistake or the mistakes and successes of others, remains to be seen. Personally, I expect tons of bugs and problems in the beta. Especially the closed one, since I suppose the open ones have long ago deteriorated to just free marketing and a last minute stress test. What I don't expect to see is those bugs, especially the ones affecting everyday gameplay, to reach the released game. If they do, I'll be disappointed for sure.
I take it that his info. is based in some fact. Facts so outdated as to be a more of source of amusement than anything else. Other parts seem to be complete fabrications compared to official info. and vids by Funcom, released to all the major MMO sites.
My only comment to him is; 'To bad you and/or your buddies broke the NDA 'months' ago using, at or below lowend spec'ed pc's, and that you were obviously caught leaking info. and perma-banned by Funcom. You'll be missed.' .../sarcasm off
The so called 'Carebear' keeps were never meant for pvp as they're hard earned and you'll need one of those before you get into battlekeeps. The crafting/guild bonuses from pve keeps seem to be important aspects for later pvp sieges.
Seeing an unfair advantage in the destruction of a battlekeep in pvp combat is ridiculous, that's what they're for. ...They go up, they come down.
There's everything right upto Legendary drops in the game and I'll bet they'll hold true to their name. But, yeah, the highend, crafted, socketed items will be sought after by all, at some point.
There's mounts in the game.../pause'n'think The claims that your closed in, like a mime doing his skit on a street corner. at every turn, is foolish.
Again, if you did get to be CB tester for AoC, it was a wasted key, and you should've played through Tortage and then watch the game areas progressively expand.
All of this info. is easily gained by going to the AoC site and reading it's contents and by watching the official vids.
No MMO title has ever launched as a finished, bug free product. There's no reason to expect this ever happening. ..Deal with it.
Last, name a single established MMO review site/mag. that backs these negative claims.

Free trials is the "ample opportunity" to try the game before putting $$$ down.
I mean isn't it you guys who are like "I've been burned before" etc etc etc etc How come none of you are taking your own medicine? T-R-Y B-E-F-O-R-E Y-O-U B-U-Y
Exactly. No to preorder. Yes to trial. And yes, a trial will be out within six months after release. I can wait ;o)
Its looks like there will be an IGN weekend special, Invited Open beta (just like war's), There will be thousands of buddy keys out there and a trial at somepoint.
That's what im shooting for
Those that pre-order are those that know enough about the game that they know they will enjoy it. And thats fair enough.
Tell those to the Dark N Light Preorder folks
Even those that are the upmost cynical and pessimistic, can hear all about the game after launch then pick up a free trial.
Exactly
At least make you own mind up on experience and not on hearsay from someone asking what the game might be like, followed by a couple of people (who I know aren't in beta) throwing a couple of troll comments out there.
Until I hear that the MMO world after lvl 20 is free roaming from a Developer or experiencing for myself, Ill wait for the trial. Not a slap against the fans, but i've seen my fair share of great hyped up games falling faster than Gary Coleman's career. Im not taking that chance right yet
Kinda sad seeing SOME vets of mmorpg.com act like this tbh.
ehh. Its normal. Don't worry about us. Youll need to worry about those folks who play the game and hate it and then post here about it. Those are the ones youll need to worry about. That will happen. Just be ready for it. It happens with every MMO. Fanboys vs haters. Normal stuff around here.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
Wait... so some of you are cancelling pre order based on this statement.... WOW.
shocking isnt it.
What happened to all the negative people who always say never buy anything without trying it first??
Thats what free week trials are for
So people cancel pre orders (like all 4 of you) then wont even look at the game? thats too funny, I mean, its worthy of a comedy sketch.

If only SW:TOR could be this epic...
There is only invisible walls at the start as far as I know. Here is a video around 2:30 the dev explains about exploring.
I had a revelation
...I was merely making an assumption based off of the videos, interviews, and articles about the game released from the developers working at AoC, though I haven't been able to play the beta yet, so it's really just trusting what the devs are saying about their own game. I never said "it will be this" or "it will be that", it's really just an educated guess of what I think they plan on doing with the game.
If only SW:TOR could be this epic...
I imagine EQ2 or WoW is more close to it. You move semi-freely inside the zone but if you transport to another zone, you will start up at the same place as everyone else. Wheny you die you start up at the same place. Fine in PvE, highly exploitive in PvP.

And when we got more women on the team, it was like No, no, no. We need puppies and horses in there.

What is the death penalty? And when I die, do I just respawn somewhere I saved before or do I run back to my body as a ghost or something, anyone know?
The game is a mess.
Troll off.
"experience is better than theory"
Yep, exactly
No preorder. Wait for OB or the end of NDA or for ""Its looks like there will be an IGN weekend special, Invited Open beta (just like war's), There will be thousands of buddy keys out there and a trial at somepoint"
What are u talkin about ? seems interesting
"The NDA regarding the beta will never be lifted."
We're only interested by the release. >Think about Anarchy online at release. In may, we'll know, we"ll see and we 'll talk.
Imo 2008 won't be a great year for MMO players. Maybe worst than 2007.
To Ugarit:
I could agree with you xasapis about bugs, I would easly overlook bugs if the overall game is exciting.
I can't handle :
poor coding
poor content
low population
too much zoning
too many cut scenes
in that order.
lol Marmag!
