TO ANSWERS: what I am seeing in a lot of the answers are basically what i call "instant action games". What I mean by that are games with no crafting, no "empire building" and easy to get into a fight. Not saying these games are bad but I will say I dont think its the target demographic of Darkfall which in part maybe an advertising mistake by AV for ever using the word "hard core" if they in fact ever did.
Alright, I'll start out with the standard disclaimer that I am not a hater per se, but more a cautious skeptic. At a bare minimum I would wait until an NA server was actually implemented anyhow so I try to stay out of a lot of the back and forth that goes on until then. So, that out of the way....
This is where I see te original question leading. Each answer can be turned as "well you are not the target demographic". And this is not to say you are using that as a tool to devalue other's opinions, but I don't think people on this site are so black and white as more casual players. I would think, for those people who go out of their way to discuss games on a forum specifically for MMOs, that they may have a broader range of tastes (though this is obviously not a hard and fast rule).
To answer the original question, I currently play EvE. I can only ever justify paying for one sub at a time, so that is all I am playing. I enjoy the ideas of territorial control and conflict, the crafting/invention, exploration (probiing and wormholes) and the different career paths (or mixes of careers) that you can embark on. In the past I played SWG (obligatory Pre-CU clarification) which I enjoyed for the crafting and skill system. I was a Master Ranger most the time and enjoyed some PvP there, but also made a living as a Master Architect where I could play the whole game without even picking up a blaster (one of the options I feel a 'sandbox' allows).
I also played FFXI and WoW for reasonable amounts of time and enjoyed them as well. I don't think I am a unique and special snowflake though and that I somehow posses an unheard of ability to enjoy a diverse range of games.

I think you are thinking of AoC and WAR here, not Darkfall. Darkfall is exactly what the hardcore crowd wanted.

I haven't spent much time in DF yet but here's my two gold pieces on the subject.
A stand up melee fight in Darkfall between equally matched opponents is incredibly fun, dodging, jumping and getting your hits in are amazing, but the PVE sucks big time and grinding crafting and gathering are a real bore.
Right now there doesn't seem anyway to equip your character with reasonable gear except to craft.
Until I played DF I was a confirmed carebear, I never got involved in PVP in any click and spam MMO.
Last night I got into a fight with a red in full armour with good weapons and I was in a crappy cloth vest and armed with a two handed noob sword (the one that looks like a hedge trimmer). He kicked my ass but I did him damage - the guy told me good fight and asked me to join his clan.
DF is a game with great potential, but can Aventurine pull it into good condition before something else comes along to take its place, we'll have to wait and see.
Will I stick it out for longer than my free month, maybe - if the grind gets nerfed soon then yes otherwise I'll cancel and keep an eye on the patch notes.
I'm not the sort of guy who would macro or exploit so maybe I'll have a hard time competing.
EVE doesn't compare to Darkfall because EVE is a spreadsheet game for people who loves maths and the combat is way more strategic from what I hear.
I'll tell you one thing though, I'll never be a carebear again.

I didn't threaten to quit. I did quit. Unlike you, apparently, I have varied interests. I can have fun in a game like Darkfall or in other games. The fun I had in Darkfall isn't enough to justify me paying for it's continued beta development (the last two patches fixed dwarven beard and sideburn color - seriously?), nor is the game feature-rich enough to justify the cost, IMO. It's that simple. Whether or not there's another game on the market right now that has Darkfall's features (limited though they may be) is irrelevant unless you're completely myopic and unable to enjoy any other game style, type of play or genre.

Take last night for instance , i logged on to run some time quests, nice quiet night, when over alliance chat i read that a rival alliance has dropped a challenge shard in OUR hamlet. After rallying the troops, we decided to hit the hamlet, over 150+people from noobs to battlemages in a full scale, the fight last 3 hours, at one point our alliance started running low on arrows and regents and i recalled with my party to our city, loaded ourselves with 20k arrows and needed regents and resupplied my clan members. I was killed and I lost my equipment, but managed to help restock my alliance on the suicide run and we succeeded in taking back our hamlet. All this is a 3month old toon ( i was running in banded, shooting my bow like mad, and took out at least 5 enemies).
I couldn't resist, forgive me miagisan.
I am far from being a DF hater but I stopped playing it. I took break, partly because of state of the game and partly because I need more time for my English exam preparations. When I have time I play Morrowind, Red Orchestra, Battlefield Heroes, Colonization, CoD4 or CoD:WaW.
As you see no MMORPG's on the list, I relized with the time ( like probably most of us ) that MMO most of time are big waste of money and time. I wait for a MMORPG with competitive PLAYER skill based pvp, full loot, NO GRIND and sandbox elements. It could be DF after some time or maybe MO, we'll see. If not I have FPS, RTS games for my need of online competition.

no worries. I played darkfall and can see how aspects might appeal to players, but the way AV handled the launch, and the community, and with the fps type gameplay, it just isnt for me. Though i dont see the part of how you could restock your hamlet for the invasion :P
and hamlets are pretty much worthless......they provide nothing but a target, you cant even get most of the basic crafting tools in a hamlet. Theres alot of fundemental flaws in darkfall....hamlets definitely being one of them, no sort of defense or viability in a hamlet
Darkfall went from 320,000 fans, to having 7k subscribers, because the NDA was lifted and we saw all the lies. Anyone still playing this game has very little respect for themselves or for whome they borrowed the money from to play... as there are numerous games that provides superior gameplay and FPS combat.
There is no arguement here, Darkfall is a complete flop and just as many people have cancel their subs as those who are playing. Aventurine as a company cannot sustain their operation much longer, as they are loosing money every month. Expect Darkfall to go bankrupt in late summer.

just get over with it, there are haters on gaming boards everywhere, if that ruins your fun and you consider to stop playing ANY online games if DF will fail ... i feel sorry for you, but maybe you should play single player games then, or at least avoid any forums related to the game you currently enjoy (this is not meant as an insult!) - there are haters and trolls at almost every mmo board, in the case of DF it is just very extreme because of all the hype and all the lies that surround it. look at some of the threads at the df board, many of the long term followers are so fed up with AV and the current state of the game that even they have started to complain and bash the game.

Haha, I have two active Darkfall accounts, and I play civ 4.
The reason is I have two PC and can macro my Darkfall char while I play civ 4, watch a video or surf. One char is macroing while the other char is target. Darkfall allows me to go into window mode and I play Civ 4 while I grind.
Darkfall is one epic grind and will soon die. Some noobs tells me all the time "don`t grind just play the game". But hey I`m a pvper and will pvp when my char is ready. I hope my chars will be ready in two months, but I`m not sure. Sadly Darkfall will have 2k players when my char is ready with mediocre stats and skills.
I have grinded for more than two months and have yet to do some pvp. The loss of players in DF is so big I hardly get pked when I harvest anymore. Tasos sucks, Aventurine suck, grinding sucks and Darkfall could have ben be a great game.
I'm playing Lineage II as my main MMO right now. Now that NCSoft has really fixed the crazy long leveling grind, not to mention added some great content, I'm having a lot of fun in the game. Not to mention the PvP is better than darkfall ever will have.
So that's my answer. It's not the best game in the world (but I've grown accustomed to it over the years and it always drags me back) but I'm having fun. I'm also waiting for both Jumpgate Online and Mortal Online to come out, and Earthrise looks great as well.

The last clan member count I gathered in-game and published was 15055 members. That number does included both ex-players who quit the game without first leaving their clans and characters that were deleted without first leaving their clans. So, 15055 is the maximimum possible number of clan members as of 05/23/09. The true number is certainly lower, but by half? Considering there are non-clan players (even assuming a very generous 25% of maximum possible clan membership, that's 3764 players. I'd say, as I have in my clan membership count posts, a more realistic number is somewhere between 13 and 18k, probably in the lower range.
I'm not defending Darkfall, but I would like to see evidence of those numbers. I do think they're bleeding members out of their already low membership pool, but I'm not convinced it's that bad (yet).

The reason is I have two PC and can macro my Darkfall char while I play civ 4, watch a video or surf. One char is macroing while the other char is target. Darkfall allows me to go into window mode and I play Civ 4 while I grind.
Darkfall is one epic grind and will soon die. Some noobs tells me all the time "don`t grind just play the game". But hey I`m a pvper and will pvp when my char is ready. I hope my chars will be ready in two months, but I`m not sure. Sadly Darkfall will have 2k players when my char is ready with mediocre stats and skills.
I have grinded for more than two months and have yet to do some pvp. The loss of players in DF is so big I hardly get pked when I harvest anymore. Tasos sucks, Aventurine suck, grinding sucks and Darkfall could have ben be a great game.
Any game that's an actual complete game which excludes DF
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I'm playing Lineage II as my main MMO right now. Now that NCSoft has really fixed the crazy long leveling grind, not to mention added some great content, I'm having a lot of fun in the game. Not to mention the PvP is better than darkfall ever will have.
So that's my answer. It's not the best game in the world (but I've grown accustomed to it over the years and it always drags me back) but I'm having fun. I'm also waiting for both Jumpgate Online and Mortal Online to come out, and Earthrise looks great as well.

actually, he's around the right #. DF only has 1 shard, and it's impossible to buy the game.

The last clan member count I gathered in-game and published was 15055 members. That number does included both ex-players who quit the game without first leaving their clans and characters that were deleted without first leaving their clans. So, 15055 is the maximimum possible number of clan members as of 05/23/09. The true number is certainly lower, but by half? Considering there are non-clan players (even assuming a very generous 25% of maximum possible clan membership, that's 3764 players. I'd say, as I have in my clan membership count posts, a more realistic number is somewhere between 13 and 18k, probably in the lower range.
I'm not defending Darkfall, but I would like to see evidence of those numbers. I do think they're bleeding members out of their already low membership pool, but I'm not convinced it's that bad (yet).
