Very low standards? Prior to World of Warcraft, a 300k subscriber base WAS the benchmark for a successful MMO. I mean, who doesn't want to rake in 4.5 million dollars a month? Expenses aside, that's still a lot of cash. Your first MMO was probably WoW so you have no real perspective. In conclusion, just because a game isn't as rabidly successful as WoW doesn't make it a failure. Apparently though, in your opinion it does.
WOW really just got lucky with the timing of there release and heres a reason. The # of MMORPG players in 98-99 compared to how many were playing or trying to play in 04-05 and compare them to now. Its a 5 year difference in between and the difference from 99-04 is probably 10 times higher then the difference of 04-09.
the things that make wow have the subs it does are the very things i despise in wow, its too easy, theres no way to distinguish yourself from the lame people that love the game to death anymore. as far as aoc and war both games had their good points but they also had their downfalls, for me war pvp was ok but if you wanted to get some levels in pve it was atrociously boring, in aoc the pve was brilliantly executed but good luck having fun in aocs pvp. so far from my aion beta weekends ive found the pve enjoyable and had fun working on how to beat people in a dueling aspect of pvp, havent had enough play time in on any class to make it to the abyss, but it looks to have the feel of pvp where the team that heals and supports its healers better will clean up the loose zerglings that are out to get the kill shot for themselves. (hopefully all those in the group will get a nice split of the pvp points for targets said group brings down)
i got AoC played 2 characters up to 80 and couldn't stand how unbalanced pvp was and pve was just too easy
WAR was pretty boring and i quit in the mid 20's because of how unbalanced knockbacks were
I look at it like this......... If AOC, Warhammer and Aion were all to go public on the same day, and I had to choose one game to play, then Aion would be my last choice.
Its good you have the other two to choose from then, at least you will for awhile as i look for Warhammer to start closing servers soon and when Aion releases i think it will sound the crack of doom for Warhammer.
Haha, they said this about WoW just before AOC was released, then they said this again about AOC just before Warhammer was released, it's the same old story but with different graphics.
All we can do is wait and see, nothing is ever over until the big fat rich person pulls his/her investment.
AoC beta I played for 2 weeks before saying this game sucks and the dev's don't care screw it.
WaR I played beta till launch, but did not buy the game. Just didn't grab me ya know.
Aion? I've done 3 beta weekends, and the 2 weeks inbetween is killer. I love the quests, I love the classes and the graphics are killer!! I lag more playing EQ2 that I do even in the large city packed with players in Aion. They seem to listen to feedback, I haven't run across any real bugs, just typo's and the like. Pre-ordered weeks ago and I can't wait for launch.
Can't say how long it will hold ppl, but for every WoW fan I see on various forums I see 4x as many saying they are sick of WoW, so I think it will have decent launch subs. Only time will tell tho.
To those saying AoC and War didn't fail .... Explain why their Directors were BOTH fired few months after launch. Explain why they had several server merges and dropped populations of 750 K at launch to ... 100K/150K now. Explain why both ex Directors said they would be ... number two in the mmorpg market in the west and they are not even in the top 10. ------------- For the Aion fans: just pray it won't happen to Aion, but forget the Asian "free to play" internet café accounts already. The HARD competition is here out in the west with those 180 dollar subscriptions for a year. I know already the launching figures of Aion by tracking Beta Xfire. And forget the initial 700K figures of War and Aoc. Those games gathered much more intrest from the "mmorpg hoppers". The current Director of Aion clearly stated his goal: become the second most played mmorpg after WoW. So when - after 6 months - they don't go to EVE numbers (300K subscribers NOT "copies sold") , I guess you can say it failed. I bet against it and it is as easy as taking candy from a baby. )))
i find it odd thought that NCsoft isn't bragging about their preorders like EA and Funcom did with their games...

i Agree i am a warhammer player myself, also played hellgate: left it just before it went down, didnt enjoy it, warhammer just realeased to early they dont have the bugs fixed yet...., just quit to play aion, aion is the next step for mmo's, IF ANY OF YOU HAVNT PLAYED AION DONT F***IN JUGE IT, U HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE GAME IS LIKE, everyone i haved talked to within the game that has played it loved it.. and just becasue they dont pick up as quick as wow doesnt mean in the long run they wont kill wow... people dont like leaving something they are used to, it the gamers that love to try the new games to see what new features are that are the people that help revolutionize the game industry, again if u dont play aion and u hate it, STAY WITH WOW, WE DONT WANT UR BITCHING ABOUT how wow is better or that bull shit, if u dont like the game DONT PLAY IT, and leave us player that enjoy it in our game..

i played hellgate and i loved it even though it was buggy and what not
Having played a Spirit Master to level 38 in Chinese retail, i didn't feel like i accomplished something.
Let me explain.
The game is basically a gank fest. As much as i love PvP (playing DFO atm), AION just fails to deliver "proper" PvP fights. There's nothing there to stop a 10-15 man group jumping you while you're doing your quests or simply grinding. They don't even need to be higher level that you, you cannot kill more than 2, maybe 3 maximum of them. The 2-hour-recharging Rifts encourage this by limiting the access to the PvP content.
Abyss : Best PvE zone in the game. Don't kid yourself, you won't be going there to PvP, mobs give double the amount of EXP than world mobs. Some die twice as fast as well.
Fortress Sieges : PvE content. To capture a Fortress, all you have to do is kill a raid boss. Yes you read it right, a mob. On top of that, there's no real reward for defending it. So people in Chinese and Korean servers just capture it one day and then leave it undefended for the other faction to have it the next day. More rewards for everyone this way.
Abyss Points and Gear : Mostly useless. Abyss Gear is good only when you buy the gold versions of it and only useful for certain classes/builds. Also, the main way to get Abyss Points is ganking. Take a 6+ man group, go through a rift and go gank anything you can until either some high levels kill you, or if you are high level yourself; kill untul you are bored of it. Another way is mobs and enemy NPCs, which was the main way of obtaining AP for some guild in AION CN.
All in all, the game won't fall flat on its face, but its not for the average PvP powergamer. Nothing exciting about AION imo, except the graphics and the well coded shadows and textures which make it run great even on low end machines.
Anyone who likes/plays/worships World of Warcraft will most likely waste a few years of his/her life on AION.
what about for people that dont' have anything else to play and are looking for something to pass the time?
Aion probably won't fail as bad as WAR or AoC but I think it will lose in the long run.
It isn't really coming out at a great time in my opinion(should of been out a year ago), with SWTOR and FFXIV around the corner (FFXIV being much more updated compared to Aion) I think the game just isn't next gen worth to be played for 4 years+ since it has already been out awhile over seas. Just from playing the beta it doesn't bring enough to the table for me to dedicate years to it with other more updated games right around the corner for 2010.
Regardless, PvP players will more than likely like the game, PvE players will probably not like it so much(forced PvP) which is the majority of players.
Having played a Spirit Master to level 38 in Chinese retail, i didn't feel like i accomplished something.

Last I heard china isnt even using the 1.2 patch for aion arnt they using 1.0 or 1.1 ?
The 1.5 patch adds the slayer system which will really help slow ganking down but shit you cant stop asshates who do it just to be ass's this will just penalize them for it.
How is the best points from ganking ? You get very VERY little points for killing lower levels. Lv 50 kills a lv 25 you get 1 pt while an abyss mob will give you WAY MORE. You cannot compare what happens in china to any other region. People there like to do shit people in NA/EU dont and we like to do shit they dont. I do say there has to be a reward for defending a fortress and it has to be a bigger reward then taking one. Maybe NCSOFT wil lsee this in the future they have shown they listen to there players for aion so far.
At the moment taken from time in the game I would say yes, only difference I can see is that it will fail faster than AOC or Warhammer. There will be less gripes about the game but many people may leave the game early never to return. There again I would love to be proven wrong.
The problem here is that people aren't understanding the defnition of fail.
I would say that the game has failed when the company behind the game starts to pull money and resources away from the game.
The thing with Aion is the timing. It is being released at a time were most people are looking for something new to play.
but just to be clear, I don't see them pulling resources away from the game? I do see a 1.5 patch coming out for us, a lot of interviews and press.
Could it fail? sure, why not. But not for several years. From what I've seen, especially with the president hoping that it will be the #2 game in the western market (and he's probably basing this on its success in the east as well as preorders in the west) , this is only the beginning. I would actually say that Aion is NC's game to destroy because it will have a fair following of players. Whether they can handle taking it to the next level is another thing.
I'm not sure there is a game out there ( and I will go out on a limb and say there isn't a game out there ) that hasn't changed in the time it was out.
Every time I see a player talk about a game, even their old favorites, they always include the caveat "it's not as good as it was because of x expansion".
players need to realize that the longer a game is outt the more changes it will receive.
so barring that, and barring NC just losing their mind, the game will be a success in the west. Not a wow killer by any stretch of the imagination, not the hardcore pvp game that some hoped it would be nor the complete open world that others hoped it would be.
But it should be a pretty solid game. Until of course 5 years pass and you can't recognize it from what it was from launch.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Well mr. troll, no. Zorgo's got it right. WAR didn't fail, AoC didn't fail, Aion won't fail. Aion already has a reported 3.5 million subs in other markets. Clearly you seem to think that a game only "passes" if it reaches 10 million subs. Only one game ever did this, thus it is comparitively an aberration. For you to think this, means you are either foolish and don't know the first thing about which you're talking, or a troll.
I can't believe there's still fanbois around that say that AOC and Warhammer didn't fail. Regardless of what you want to call it, if Aion loses 60% of it's subs in 3 months meaning empty zones, like AOC and WAR, and playing the game turns out to be a horrible pointless grind, like those games, then I personally wouldn't want to play it.
Curious cause I don't want to buy another doomed MMO
why not wait 2-4 weeks after launch then. Pretty sure WAR and AoC were getting many negative posts in the first 2 weeks of launch.
This is good advise, also 2-4 weeks after launch you could pick the game up for £1.99 with a free teddy bear pet, spare set of inflatable wings and a mushroom mount, not to mention a years free subscription.
I hope this will be a niche game in NA/EU with dedicated people who enjoy RvR and PvPvE. This game clearly is not for everyone. It does not have the mass market appeal that WoW has - in order to do that you need a game that focuses more on soloability and instant gratification more and just do not see it in Aion. After six months, if the game has a subscriber-base of 100-150k in NA/EU it will is a successl.

And if you won't play it, it'll definitely fail. WoW is failing all over these forums, which is equally hilarious.
just wait a few months after release and see how they are doing. You dont HAVE to buy it at release.
That being said, if aion doesnt do well, it wont be for the same reasons as WAR and AoC, which failed because they were buggy and unfinished, (moreso AoC than WAR) but rather because the gameplay just didnt take in the West.
Well realisticlly there is no way of telling if the game will fail or not. Until you actually play the game for yourself and decide. If it's not for you fine, but if it is great! I though WAR was going to be awesome! I was super excited for it and I played it for 2 months because I decided the game was simply not for me. I'm excited by Aion but like all games you have to take it with the punches. I can't say how many times I've been disappointed by games only to be pleasantly surprised at some titles. So we'll see once the game comes out.

Same here. I'm a super-mega-huge Warhammer/WH40k fanboy, and I was excited when WAR came out. It was the first game I ever pre-ordered. And, like you, I stuck with it the first time, for about a month. Don't think I even made it into the first payment period. Tried it off-and-on over the past year, and it's still pretty meh.
Hopefully Aion, the second game I've ever pre-ordered, won't be a bucket of poo as well.
Katsma is Lithuanian for 'he who drinks used douche fluid'.
Its just another loot-treadmill. People who play video games only for material rewards will probably like it. It has already failed me, personally. Just like AoC and WAR.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
The reason this is such a lame thread is that it's just so trollish. It pisses a lot of people off that like a game when people come in and bash it (especially before it's released). Half the bashers just love the act of bashing but really don't care one way or the other. Frankly, I'd trust a fanboy's opinion over a basher anyday, simply because so many of those people that rip games apart do it for sport.
I agree with those that have said you have to define the word fail. If you want to find an MMO that gets everything right on day one, please let me know if you are successful. All Mmo's go through a bit of ups and downs and many get better over time. In the mean time:
AoC has not failed. It's a live game and has a lot of fans (and a lot of haters)
WAR has not failed. It is a live game and has a lot of fans (and a lot of haters)
Aion likely won't fail. It is a very polished game which is very successful in another market. It has an advantage over other start up MMO's. So far there are few haters. When the game launches some will get bored after powerleveling 30 hrs straight and decide "This game sucks!". At that point they will quit the game, and fill every post about Aion with bashing of the game. How dare a game not be completely engaging every second of every day till the end of time! For god's sakes I wish these people would just take a break and come back and play when they have the urge. It would save us rational people a lot of headaches.

AION will ultimately fail. One word, Botting. If you played Lineage 2 you know.
even though L2 have many bots it is still very well played and can be hardly called a failed game.
