I logged into AoC today, the servers were still up. There was still a whole load of people at the traders, I was still constantly running into other players.
Hmmm, I dont get it, AoC seems to be doing fine to me.
AoC is a failure if you compare it to game as successful as Aion. Aion is the most polished and stable MMO about to be released in the West this century, period. Add in the dynamic gameplay and the large scale smooth PvP you have 3.5mill+ subs in Aisa already. Aion could potentially drive the final nail into AoC and WAR's coffin, this isn't specualtion its a fact - a game can only survive for so long with only ~3 servers.

Weird... in actuality... people from AoC arnt going to run to AION... AoC provides an adult atmosphere with a style of pvp thats more realistic... AION = Upgraded WoW. WoW players will run to AION as with many others. WAR would be more reasonable to say it would have to go F2P to stay alive as it's a toned down game to compete with WoW. You completely missed the idea of Nitches.... Some games fill a desire for only 60k people but those 60k have their desires filled... so they arnt going to go play every new hyped MMO(AoC and they have over 100k). WAR also offered a mix of WoW and DAoC but it wasn't really a nitch that competes as it's a little of a few games as opposed to A LOT of one unique experience. So basically what i'm saying is AION will drain from similar games and only present an appeal to the nitch gamers who may be eyeing the market. People who dislike WAR/WOW wont like AION most likely and like all MMO's US steady subs will be 100-200k and the rest are all foriegn.

I would hate to correct such an obvious intellectual post, but have you ever heard of LotRO. Arguably one of the smoothest launches of any AAA MMO.

Lotro was really polished, almost perfect. I think Aion will compete though from experience with both in beta stage.

In my opinion Aion, when released in the west, will be even smoother. I personally feel that Aion is also more polished and stable then LOTRO is, even today.
But that's just my opinion, and when you compare two well done games it's going to come down to people's opinions oh which they feel is better.

as I thought no game matches your desires nor are they worthy of your money or you'd be playing them and paying for them. I dont care for your excuses as to why not when the facts are simple... you arn't playing them or giving them any money. Regardless to what you say about this title that I most likely wont even play you're wrong. Your giving an opinion and trying to pass it as fact or law when it's not. just stfu and understand that you cant be pleased because your immature and your standards are too high... rather then doing something about it though you just like to talk on forums and pretend your ideals are something special.

what's that people say? even the fat girls need loving too? i think that saying applies to aion
How many subscribers does an MMO need to have to 'succeed', again? Is even two thousand insufficient if it happens to sustain that number for ten frickin' years? Let's get a definition going, shall we?
Favorites: EQ, EVE | Playing: None. Mostly VR and strategy | Anticipating: CU, Pantheon

In reality? It really depends on where the company's break even point is at. I believe anything over 100k subscribers is pretty good for most games.
On these forums? 1-2 million, maybe?
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
Aion has betweeen 1.5 to 2.5 million subs and still growing where it launched. And still people claim its failing so.
Right, I should have clarified... 1-2 million western subscribers + 4-6 million eastern subscribers.
The western subscription model means ... paying 180 dollars each year just to log in on the server to play ONE game.
Those are the only numbers that are relevant. The eastern numbers are gathered in internet cafés in God knows what kind of definition of "player" activiity.
Then stop claiming WoW had 11.6 million in feb
Proof: Lineage2 had a supposed 4 Million "subscribers" base at launch in the east.... in the west it hardly has 60 K.
wow then have 5 million relevant subscribtions and not the 11 million you claim it has
Aion in its first month of China launch was complete FREE to play. So those "millions" at launch are questionable.
After that Aion grown 43 servers in China
It's the same with the western launches of War and AoC in 2008: 750 K sold copies .... but when the 180 dollars a year are charged, the numbers of players smelt faster than an icecream at 100° F.
Had nothing to do with the 180 dollars
Polish has NOTHING to do with it (see Lotro).
AOC and WAR went down because of its Polishwell the lack of it that is
So again: whoever thinks Aion will get over 300K western paid subs after 6 months with unwestern and translated Korean Lore should first think before posting.
What korean lore are you talking about? when i read the lore i sure didnt go WTF, its actualy a quite interesting lore and i cant wait to find out how it unfolds ingame
Aion will be a succes with western 200K subs. Most likely it will settle down to around 150K until some new mmorpg's will come in 2010.

Just have to wait and see on that one
Please stop mixing my statements with yours. Or use colors.
Since the CEO of activision blizzard stated in June09 there were around 4.5 million mainland Chinese internet café "subscribers".
That would mean Blizzard had around 7.000.000 subscribers outside of the internet cafés in China. Not 5 M.
As for the "wait and see": it is already there to see: just click on xfire and search for the number of players playing the "free" to play Aion Beta in the west.
They are at around 60% of the players AoC and War had in Beta.
So the count is quickly made: 60% of 700 to 800K at launch after which 30% (at the most) will want to pay the 180 dollar yearly subscriptions after 3 months .... IF the game is good that is.
Not hard to predict really ....
I post how i want to ok.
Is china the only country in Asia? no then remove all the other countrys from the WoW subs as well then, as you do that with all other games.
Xfire dont mean shit to me. I dont even play the beta much as i want to keep things for release and i think with me alot others that do so. Hell alot of Players play on Asian servers atm and skip beta altogether. Oww you cant see that on Xfire because they dont use it there? ahh accurate...
Aion wont follow the same road WAR and AOC did. Aion is already a success and it is fast on its way to being the number #2 western mmo and the #1 world mmo. If you dont believe this then do more research into Aion.
Could it possible take the route that WAR and AOC did in North America? Possibly. It is completely possible that the mmo fanbase in North America only responds mildly to Aion and subs never reach the million mark.
I personally think that Aion will be a success. Once people get past the korean themes, every other mmo except WoW will feel broken compared to this game.

Ok let me rephrase my question then... to give you some insight in what "millions of western subs" exactly means ....
You as a hardcore Aion fan .... Are YOU willing to pay 180 dollars a year to just connect to Aion as a single game to play?
Answering this question will give you the answer why 200K+ long term WESTERN subscriptions would be a success.
The accent is on "long term" here , you know the period that begins after the first free month and the first bimonthy sub card ....
For 1 im not an "hardcore" Aion fan, i have yet to post if i like the game or not.
Which i cant coz i didnt see even half of the game yet.
You keep banging on the 180 dollars to play a game, if a game is good yes i pay it. wheter its aion AoC WAR or whatever paid to play game it is.
And i dont give a shit about the western market. Aion has proven to do very well so far, so im sure if i like the game i can maybe even fork out an whooping 540 dollars for it.
If Lineage 2 wasnt well played in asia the "60k" players that enjoy playing it in the west they wouldnt even have a game to play coz they pulled the plug, so much for the asian market being irrelivant.
All i need in AIon is 1 server i can play on that can keep me entertained. wheter it be 10k subs or 10 million.
You only see the numbers on you own server anyway, the rest is irrelivant for playability.

Aion could potentially drive the final nail into AoC and WAR's coffin, this isn't specualtion its a fact - a game can only survive for so long with only ~3 servers.
it's too bad aion fucking sucks
Enjoy your ban wow troll ))
enjoy your korean grind game
every game is a grind and AION isn't a bad game it's really good and actually polished... So please stop being biased.
yup it's a polished free to play mmo with a monthly fee
Name a game that truly deserves to charge monthly ? Please enlighten me into what fits your description of a good game and then explain why you arn't playing it as opposed to downing AION ... repeatedly.
world of warcraft but i played wow vanilla to death and i have no desire to play it any more
everquest was worth the monthly fee also but i played that to death also
as I thought no game matches your desires nor are they worthy of your money or you'd be playing them and paying for them.

In reality? It really depends on where the company's break even point is at. I believe anything over 100k subscribers is pretty good for most games.
On these forums? 1-2 million, maybe?
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
Even that is fail im afraid
Aion has betweeen 1.5 to 2.5 million subs and still growing where it launched.
And still people claim its failing so.

Right, I should have clarified... 1-2 million western subscribers + 4-6 million eastern subscribers.

I don't know guy maybe you should ask cleo. wtf.
CB 6 and they stil havnt fixed thier server lag/rubber banding issues, unplayable ....again

AOC and WAR went down because of its Polish well the lack of it that is
So again: whoever thinks Aion will get over 300K western paid subs after 6 months with unwestern and translated Korean Lore should first think before posting.
I see Aion being just Lineage II successor both in gameplay and subscription numers: big in asian internet cafe's and up to 100k western subsribers.
