Everyone knew this from the start, and it was the complaint everyone had. Why pay monthly fee for a single player game, I know I won't.
I think too may people had the wool pulled over their eyes when they saw the words STAR WARS + BIOWARE + MMO. For those not blinded by the announcement we saw TOR for what it was going to be and slowly others are now starting to see that as well. Why does anyone want to PAY for Star Wars Diablo when they can just wait and play Diablo 3 for FREE?
So its a Diablo clone instead of a WOW clone?
WOW is just a first person diablo clone and poeple pay for that *shrug*
This has literally just killed this game for me. Im not paying monthly for Guild Wars come Star Wars. BioWare have a cheek comig out with crap like this.
The OP doesn't provide a link and you don't verify his claim, so I fully expect you to jump on the bandwagon. It's only natural. Here's what I found from my scrounging:
"Combat and dialogue in TOR plays more
like the Knights of The Old Republic games
than I had expected. It’s not exactly the
same, of course, and things will change
when we get our first companion characters
(since you can’t pause to give them specifi c
orders like in KOTOR), but so far the action is
fast-paced and feels distinctively like Star
Wars. Most of all, The Old Republic
feels like an attempt to build a
bridge between the gameplay of
BioWare’s traditional singleplayer
RPGs and the new world
of MMORPGs, with the ultimate
goal of settling into a spot that enjoys
the strengths of both types."
Sounds a little different than what the OP posted, right? Either he's a troll or he was being sarcastic. Probably the latter. Claims like his have been made since this game was announced.
I read your post about four times, and thought it was just me being slow. But, seriously, at what point is the quote you provided different to what the OP said? Your quote states it feels like Kotor but online. Thats exactly what we are complaining about. We dont want Kotor but with the ability to play with 2 mates in an instance. We want a star wars universe with people to share it with properly.
So, it wasnt a bandwagon we all jumped on. It was BioWare who jumped on the Band wagon when they decided to pander to what they assumed was the majority when it came to opinions on MMO gameplay.
Uh...
"Feels like STAR WARS (not KoTOR)..."
"...ultimate goal of settling into a spot that enjoys the strengths of both types (single player RPGs and the new world of MMORPGs)."
You don't have to pay for it if you feel it'll be too single-player for you, what do I care?
Im sure you dont care, and thats not the point. This isnt an argument between two geeks. Its the simple fact that it is very much too sinlge player for people. Its annoying and disappointing. You build an image in your head, you look forward to something, you then swear and move on as said company dashes your hopes with some crap ideas.
It might feel like star wars and not Kotor, but honestly does that make sense? Kotor IS star wars. And an earlier quote in your statement said "TOR plays more like the Knights of The Old Republic games than I had expected."
They should come up with a new title for games like this. They arent MMO's to me. An MMO is a world full of people who you bump into as you play, not full of instances and hubs. Argue semantics all you like (which Im sure some arse will) but it doesnt feel MMO. Its an OIG or something (online instanced game). WHatever it is its not what people want.
The above posts are stupid. This game will be nothing like Diablo, did you know guild wars has companions to? You know, something that can atleast SOMEWHAT relate to this game? If anything its a Starwars KOTOR With Ability To Group Up Online If You Want To. And if your going to be naming clones, name it a mix of WoW with guildwars, even though its not a clone of anything.
Best news I have heard in a longtime. I can't wait for something new and refreshing. Hope the PvP is like Jedi Academy that would own face. I also love the fact that a large company took a great risk in breaking the mold and I think they will do just fine. This will attrack more than starwars fans imo.
Ummm... what "mode" are they breaking exactly? Its a single player game with co-op that will charge me 15 bucks a month. I guess you could call the 15 bucks part breaking the mode since all co-ops games are free to play online.
Welp this officially does it for me. If any bioware devs just happen to read this. I think you guys really missed the mark on a design that really could have rivaled wow. This title was pretty much the only game that had a real chance to do so.
So what will keep people paying 15 bucks a month? Its basically a single player game and not an MMO. Welp if this is true then that nixs me buying the game.
-Good said.....i do not want single player game and pay montly fee for it so i can chat online <_< i can do that on any messanger.
The above posts are stupid. This game will be nothing like Diablo, did you know guild wars has companions to? You know, something that can atleast SOMEWHAT relate to this game? Honestly this gets me mad, if people want to solo, then they just piss off and play single player games offline.
And if you want to group, just piss off and play a normal multiplayer game.
Dumb comment of the evening.
Its not a normal multiplayer game you spastik, Its a massively multiplayer game. Its not Fifa online where you hook up with your hoodie mate for a kick around. Its an online world to share with thousands of other people. Grow a brain and then place it in your head, not your rectum.
If you're getting this passionate over it, you need to go play EVE, Darkfall, or the like, and take a chill pill.

So, we'll just have to wait and see, not base our raving opinions on one article from PC Gamer.
This news pretty much destroys me ever wanting to play this game. I really miss the social aspects of pre cu SWG and the star wars atmosphere. I would just play oblivion or something if I wanted to play by myself. Not much to look forward to at the moment. Back to Fallen Earth I go sigh.
I think they're on the verge of feeding everyone a multiplayer game.
We need to see massive here, Bioware.
General Star Wars feel...check. Jedis...check. Star Wars iconic classes...check.
What else have they shown us that will entice us to play it over something else? I'd get the hype ball rolling on stuff a little more important than things that are basically gimmes.
This game probly wont even come out this year, there isnt a whole lot of info about it. it's to early to assume how this game will be just wait play your other games check up on the game in 6 months.
Just hate trolls and there pointless comments. Played EvE for 5 years. Fail Atlas ftw... =p We'll see, and pray it isnt as bad as I think.
Then you need to play it now, because you're getting crazy over something pretty trivial. At least take the chill pill, eh? Yes, we'll wait and pray it isn't as bad as you think. I seriously doubt it will be.
Also agree that Bioware needs to release more info, especially any info that would counteract these claims. If they have nothing to offer, though, that isn't good! The next X number of months, until they DO release more info, will be recharged with, "TOR IS A SINGLE PLAYER GAME!!!111" threads.
How much will it cost to play Star Wars: The Old Republic?
Pricing for Star Wars: The Old Republic will be determined and announced at a later date.
Is this a MMO?
Yes, Star Wars: The Old Republic is a MMO, or “massively multiplayer online game”. Star Wars: The Old Republic will allow thousands of players to explore, adventure, and fight in a single game session.
Hmm i shall ponder this more. Propoganda from the Sith? I suppose you can loosely apply Dragon Age as an MMO then. Thousands of people bought the game. They can play in a single game session, just not together on one game server live. Maybe Bioware is trying to redefine what an MMO is.
Well look on the bright side, if the game tanks we probably won't see many more of these BS "single player" mmos for a while
Unfortunately if things go well..........ahhhhhhhhh!
To bad too, I missed out on SWG, and I was really looking forward to dipping my toes into an mmo set in that IP.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
People have been saying TOR looks like a single-player game with a chat room for months and the only people in a position to prove that it's more than that are Bioware, yet they wish to remain silent. As long as Bioware allows info like this to be published without offering any proof to contradict it, people will continue to bitch about a single-player game advertised as an MMO.
BW has not announced it's pricing so it is very possible that they plan on charging a smaller fee than most MMOs in hopes of getting more players. Most players wont pay $15 a month for a Diablo with a Star Wars theme, but what if they only charged $4-5 a month for KOTOR online with a steady stream of content patches?
There is a big difference between TOR and any single player game: these days single player RPGs are meant to be completed in 60-80 hours. On the otherhand, TOR contains hundreds of thousands of lines of dialogue, which means that it contains hundreds of hours of voice acting alone. You are not paying monthly for multiplayer, you are paying monthly for a game that is larger than any offline RPG. Furthermore, this is a way to avoid piracy, which allows them to invest more heavily in the game.
I don't understand it. Some of these same people said they would hate to be forced to group in a game. Yet here Bioware is allowing you to solo IF YOU CHOOSE.
Yet now that is a terrible thing? Wat?
It's amazing how people are never satisfied and will always complain about something.
Latest issue of PC Gamer- February 2010 issue (arrived in the mail yesterday) "There are plenty of single-player rpg fans who are put off by the level-grind, cookie-cutter quests and forced camaraderie of the ever-increasing number of online rpgs, and these are the gamers BioWare seems to have had in mind when it designed its first mmo, Star Wars. It plays more like Dragon Age than WoW, complete with a huge, unique story-based campaign for each of the eight player classes and AI driven companion characters that will accompany you on difficult quests, and it doesn't force you to saddle up with teenagers or maniacs who might shred your nerves and jeopardize your enjoyment."
Given that the last year has been filled with complaints against linear-storyline play and heavy instancing, this seems like a dicey direction for BioWare to be taking. I can't really see people justifying a $15/month fee for this game, I kind of anticipate that they plan to launch with some other revenue system, perhaps an optional monthly fee DDO style.
Well, I also read that the story driven solo content is just one of many different things you will be able to do in the game. I am assuming you won't have to do any of those quests if you don't want to. You can probably grind or pvp or whatever you want. I am also assuming there will be open worlds to explore with other players in them. They are probably focusing on promoting the story campaign because its relatively innovative and fresh as far as MMOs are concerned.
I agree that if the single player story was the only thing worthwhile in the game, a monthly sub would not be worth it even if it is as good as Dragon Age, but I have a pretty good feeling that there will be plenty of other stuff to do in the game once it's released. Time will tell.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
First, I think Bioware did their research. I have to agree that I do not want "forced" interaction with teenagers and idiots and loot-obsessed players that want to rush content. Again and again in MMOs I've reached a point where decent progress has necessitated looking for a group and most of the time its been awful. Even in LOTRO when I was part of an excellent Kin, the group content in the epic quest line were a constant problem. People did not want to PUG - too many horrible experiences - so they would ask for kin help. And older kin had done the quests to death and would rather gnaw their own arm off than do them yet again.
At the same time, group content is the best content if you are with the right people.
The recent addition of skirmishes to LOTRO and the use of AI in STO (ground missions) and now this for SWTOR all seems to be the same idea, and I think it will be tremendously popular. Skirmishes are already very popular.
Second, I don't think Bioware are going to charge a monthly fee, at least not a high one. I believe there have been hints from Bioware that the payment model will not be standard.
Bottom line, the posters reacting negatively in this thread are out of touch with what a lot of players want.
This Thread: Old News is presented as new, all the typical mouth breathing rabid old school gaming nuts that had no intentions of playing act as if they did, only to say they are disappointed. GG
