I could go track down the interviews if you wish, but they've explicitly said there is group-only content that you cannot solo. They've also explicitly said you can level to max level without grouping (no different than a lot of other games out there).
Frankly, I think the design is fairly liberating for group play compared to games like WoW. Looks like you can group and do all content without being punished (whereas in WoW you get a lot less exp from monsters, there's no challenge, and you risk running out of quests to do). They've certainly made a system where you'd expect content to scale up in difficulty with groups, considering the instancing, which would mean far more than other games you are free to group or solo as you wish (of course, there is still the group-only stuff).
Frankly, I think forced grouping games ARE bad design, as it takes a lot of effort and time just to form a group (or you have to schedule your life around the game even to just level). TOR looks like a game that enables both grouping and soloing, and we'll just have to see how well they've done group dynamics and difficulty scaling. Right now they haven't talked about it in great detail...they haven't talked about much in great detail. Bioware only talks about things they have pretty much done after all. We know there are heavy story elements, we know they've designed a system that allows groups to be part of a dialogue rather than just one person controlling it (pretty awesome in my book), and we know some general features about the classes. Beyond some locations, we really don't know a lot else. They've said there will be crafting, group content, end-game content, etc. They've also said 2009 they focused on the story and what makes their game different. Therefore, it is best to sit back, show a little patience, and see what things look like as they release more information and remember they haven't even said a release year, let alone a release date.
You people trying to convince yourself otherwise after the only thing these devs have talked about is the single-playerness of this game are delusional. What have you heard about this game? "OHH we've focused 99% of the development on making this game 100% voice-overed, like any MMO player will not turn that sh*t off anyway, but hey, it's easier to talk into a mic than to make high-quality effective MMO systems!" "OHH Ideally you should play the story to the end and then go play all the other classes stories" (basically saying the single-player story is the focus, not end-game.) NO QUALITY PVP FOOTAGE / Videos or articles. No Quality endgame PvE / Loot System videos or articles. NO Crafting / Player-Based Economy Videos or articles. To quote a poet: If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a F(#KING SINGLE-PLAYER DUCK!
While it is evident that they are approaching this game as a studio would approach a single-player RPG. Does this mean the game will suck or not be worth the money spent? Not at all IMO, maybe they should rethink their classification, that's about it (even then I feel funny making that statement because I really don't know if it is an MMO or not ITS NOT OUT YET).

So where has it been confirmed that it will have a monthly fee of 15$? Also, these instances, are they gonna be personal instances that you can invite friends into, or instances where other people will be, but they have to instance because of the whole planet thing. I dont see how an open world would be possible when there are multiple worlds lol
Well soloers wanted a game of their own and well, here it is. Ofcourse you can bring friends with you but I wonder how many you can have in a party. One poster put it nicely, atleast this won't be a clone of any other mmo out there.
If this is true we can stop calling it an MMO. FFxiv is looking better and better.
It's by Bioware. It will be good whatever it is.

To be honest, I can understand the skepticism voiced by some when it comes to claims by any MMORPG developer. This is a community that has had to listen to types like Brad McQuaid and Richard Garriott in the past so taking the attitude of 'I'll believe it when I see' is not entirely unhealthy. (Though frankly, I could never understand why anyone would listen to developers like that)
Bioware, however, has established itself as having a decent reputation as a game company. I think they deserve a little bit of trust after making games like Baldur's Gate, KOTOR and Dragon Age without getting a reputation for being misleading or lying to their customers.
If SWTOR was just another KOTOR game with some online elements, then Bioware would have marketed it as such. Instead, they're saying it's a MMORPG. Presumably, some of people at Bioware have played WoW or LotRO or EQ and they know what a MMORPG is and what it isn't.
It's understandable to be skeptical until Bioware provides proof, but as a game company that has made good products for years, they've earned the right to be taken at their word.
We'll all know more as they release more information about the game, but right now claiming this game is not a MMORPG is speculation based on Negative Proof.
My gripe is with all the voice acting... why would you even want to play with a group? Especially if the instances require any sort of tactics and coordination. If voice chat is needed.... see where im going here?
Playing online often leads to people not knowing when or how to stfu. I'm gonna get shat on for this next comment but god help you if there's a female in your group. Thanks so much for this information. Another game that I don't have to bother to buy it. Because Guild War is the game that I dislike the most, if SW:TOR is anything like GW, then I am not going to try it.
Guild Wars is a heavily instanced and not a MMO. SWTOR is going to have open worlds and is a MMO.

Like it or not, deal with it.
SWTOR is going to be a heavily instanced, linear, restricted single player game - just like Kotor, ME and Dragon Age - BUT with some online features. It will definitely not be 'open world' and anyone who says so has not understood what the developers have said and the information that they have released. Mmorpg.com shouldn't even be covering this game. ;o)
It'll be like Kotor but now you won't just buy the game - you also have to pay a rent to play it, a rent that goes on indefinitely.

Wrong. SWTOR is going to be a game featuring open worlds (btw Linear boils down to what exactly?) with class story and all the other MMO features, see the FAQ for those. Please, show me where I'm wrong, would absolutely love that. But you can't, can you?

'Open worlds'? LOL
Go have a look at the game screenies again. The largest area shown is smaller than one quarter of Stormwind. Guess you've never played a Bioware game or otherwise you'd know what you were talking about. Good luck to you.
It's already evident that SWTOR playable spaces will be about the size of the restricted fields of Mass Effect. What were they? About 25 metres by 25 metres? Oh well, I'm sure the brilliant voice acting will make up for it, eh?
Just replying on the authors original message and didnt read anything in between.. All I can say is not surprised of thos announcement, I lost interest in the game after playing Dark Age: Origins seeing where SWTOR is probably headed.
I mean i liked the experience of DA:O, but by the time i got to end game (played the very weak guardian class that took forerver) I was emotionally wore out and it was an expierence, not really a game.. The game was boring and the end battles I was not even wanting to play.. i just pushed my way thru to get it over with.. I tried to go ack and play again as a ranger, but failed after the first few levels..
The contstant ever changing storyline, of spins and twists is fun for a while.. but tiring overall.. I dont play games to watch games.. I dont play games to see cut scenes.. i play games to play games.. and not surprised SWTOR sold out to the masses of computer users.. not gamers.
They fooled us with lies from the start saying they wanted fights to be epic.. now we are wondering if there ever is going to be a fight..

Bioware have done their research well. Most people don't want forced grouping MMOs. Players want story and to play in an online universe with lots of other people, but not be forced to play with retards if they don't want to. I am happy to pay $15 per month (price of 1 coffee per week) to play HELL YEAH if the game is good. I loved Diablo and would happily pay a monthly fee for constant updates. Bioware know how to make top games and this will be awesone. SWTOR will be the new benchmark when released THANK GOD. We shall see if I am right. EA and Bioware have invested huge money in this game (millions) and I think they are good judges. F@@K the hardcore MMO players they can play some niche game if they want to hold hands with other players online.
This is the kind of player new companies are developing for. Hundreds of thousands of them willing to spend their money in a simplified single player game, just to be able to link their newly found gear to their guild mates in chat.

WoW will bleed some subs, but let me tell you this.. if this game is very instanced like DA:O then the subs wont go beyond 600,000. Bet I dont see how games can be called MMO's when they are so cut up and instanced. Its online and it's a RPG but in no way is it massive. I hope there is wide open areas to explore and even level in while following a story.
City of Heroes/Villains is cut up and instanced... oh wait, that's not an MMO???
You're all freaking ridiculous and are talking shit about this game like you've actually learned anything about it.
What little we do know is they said the heavy instancing was for LEVELING to tell the story of your character. They've talked very little about end-game but they DID say that's where you'll see all the traditional MMO elements in the game.
Seriously guys, I know the community of this site (and the mmo world in general) is freaking horrible and you've all made your decisions regardless of what info you do and/or don't have, but try to wait until they actually RELASE INFORMATION ffs.

It has specifically been stated by the devs that instancing is nowhere near Guild Wars, that all mmo elements are there.
None of the footage so far looks like it'll be a fully instanced experienced, in fact quite the contrary: only conversations are seen as instanced.
Oh wait, I forgot I was posting on mmorpg.com, where any game that doesn't promise to put all the fun behind a solid brick wall and give you a toothpick to break through, will get flamed to hell.
