Why I decided not to stay:

    1. Boring combat. No targettable subparts, no multifaceted shield facings, no ship-boarding and you can barely see the ship(s) you are fighting unless you zoom in and then you wont see your ship. Just plain boring and not what I expect out of ship-combat.

    2. Assymetrical PvP - Meaning it is almost always one side that is vastly outnumbered. Rarely do you see even fights but rather most fights are actually ganks.

    3. Boring exploration - I want to land on planets, find hidden asteroids with riches, explore uncharted space and actually expect to see something I havent seen or heard of before.

    4. Death penalty - too high to be enjoyable. One death in a BS with T2 mods means atleast an hour of boring mission farming. Bleh!

    5. UI - Among the worse I seen in any game. It is plain horrible.

I resubbed a couple of times but these obstacles stopped me from ever enjoying the game even though I really wanted to.

With a litte research you could have known about the majority of your complaints ahead of time. Before I ever installed eve I knew it was click to move captains simulation. I knew the type of pve it had, knew that the game was a war simulation which means no fair fights. I knew about the cascading menus. and your third complaint is unrealistic eve already wormhole exploration, the discovery of escalations, rare asteroid fields, salvage yards, archeology sites, hacking beacons, sleeper sites and empires ran both by npc and players that are completely unique. What your asking for is an entire revamp/ reimagining of a game that started it's development ten years ago.

Can I just add that Eve is an absolutely AMAZING game I just think they would REALLY help bring alot more players if they provided an ability to play 4v4 or 1v1 arena type games which enables people with little time to really jump into the game

Don't make the rewards better than Null sec battles and that way people get to dive into PvP easily and you might help propagate more people to the later game

But they really need to address the time issue, but then again I don't think they do seeing as their subs are going up heh

What is it, or was it, about the game of EVE that keeps you from playing the game?

The developers and their inability to code.

Also CCP's sanctoning of bots. Believe it. See it for yourself if you dont believe me. There are bots years old that are reported many times...STILL floating around. CCP does not care how it makes money nor about eve really. its a joke that they wont the game of the year but the rules for that were funny to begin with. even the companies themselves could vote multiple times..since they have regional offices. Try and tell me CCP didnt do something fishy or pay them off, pffff.

In all honesty, I think it's the lack of control that bugs me the most. The game is decent enough, and has a lot of great ideas, but I had more fun with PvE in STO than EVE (as much as I die a little inside when I say that). Maybe it's just my long periods of being addicted to games like X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and other space shooters, but I truthfully have a hard time being even remotely interested in a game whose PvE combat is so uninvolved. PvP is a great source of fun for me, but PvE is what keeps me playing a game for any appreciable length of time.

Its true EvE's PvE is lacking and should be beefed up . And no matter what EvE players says , without PvE the game is dead, PvE is what creates the isks , loot , etc.... The game requires PvE to sustain itself which is a big enough reason for it to be improved.

It is interesting to read the varied responses from all the people posting in this thread.  I wonder if anyone from CCP has read this thread yet?  Some of the responses are worth making note of.

  • For me its the forced PvP ... or at least that is the impression I got from the game.

I'm not a big PvP fan at all and it seems that PvP is the heart of the game with everything else added to support it. Some people love PvP some don't. I'm the later and thats what keeps me away. Its a shame because other than that, its a high quality game with fresh ideas and a great storyline.

I can empathise with you and fully understand your viewpoint, but it's not a shame from the larger communities perspective that EVE is (to an extent) pvp centric.

The fact of the matter is that there are countless mmos out there which have little to no pvp and are not driven by community interaction. Given that we are seeing the evolution from the ig communities of old to more single player experiences (see Cryptics latest spin on the situation) I for one am glad that games like EVE exist.

Whilst it wouldnt hurt to improve the missions in the game, the economy is driven predominantly by the player instigated market place and industry, far more then by people PvEing.

I agree 100%. It a shame FOR ME, but for people that love PvP ... like I used to years ago ... its an oasis in a desert of generic PvE games.

However, when asked by the OP why I don't play, that is the only honest answer I can give. Yes, the PvP may keep people like me away but it should attract those that love it, esp when the game itself "seems" rock solid.

When you really look at eve and all of it's features the pve is actually pretty impressive. I know it's repetitive and at the start it seems like basic mission farming and watching a wallet blink.

The amount of options ccp tosses at the gamer is pretty amazing. Sure variety in missions would be cool and maybe more cinematic agent representation would help immerse the gamer but I think eve has a solid system in place that could seriously be expanded on.

Missions, ratting, exploration, cosmos. Fw missions, sleepers, mining,, trading, industry. It's a lot.

We just need ccp to stop adding more options and focus on making what's here already better.

Year and a month in the game and I can count the good battles with the fingers on one hand. I spent more than half of that time in zero sec and quarter in low-sec so don't be saying I haven't tried! Providence, Geminate, Vale of the Silent, Syndicate..

I am puzzled how people enjoy this game's PvP. Only explanation I can think of is that they don't like the actual PvP - they like the killing or the hunt and metagame. Cat 'n' mouse -game - no real fights. Meh...

This is pretty much my experience also.  I don't know how people enjoy this game except for the fact that there isn't anything else out there quite like it.  But my view on that is there is a good reason noone else is copying the game systems...  I rate it a 2 out of 10 at best.

I tried eve ive tried it every year normally after a new expansion i play the same character so when i log on im not totally naked OR from the start and my experience has always been the same.

Eve attracts the lowest common denominator of people,

Its full of griefers and gankers there is no real fun to the game you cant build up a trading empire because all the missions on the merchant type transport missions are all scams EVERY SINGLE ONE is a scam. you can only really trade the gheto stuff from the stations and once you work out which ones want what and use a very simple program to calculate the best purchase and sell then making money becomes incredibly easy.

I looked at the combat mechanic and its boring it is the most single boring fighting mechanic in any game i have ever played.

Set orbit range to optimal for weapons and orbit target taking pot shots at them (normlly out of view range)

And dont even think about venturing out of the safe zone unless you have spent 5 years grindign on skills that take an eternity.

Also the fact that the game has been automated to effectivly play itself shows how much fun asteroid farming is.

The game would be fun but im sorry but its population have just ruined it, trading has been ruined by all the scams, fighting has been ruined by all the gate campers who dont want "fair" fights but just want to gank. ALso people keep quoting that 100k people play this game when ever i have logged on it has shown the population of about 14k i dont know where people get the 100k figurer from.

Get over it people. If you don't like eve you just don't get it. It's not the game, it's you.

Some complaints about problems in the game have been valid.  The vast majority, however, have been people describing a type of game that doesn't appeal to them, yet obviously appeals to others.  IE; they are complaints about features that make the game what it is, or features that simply FIT this type of game, and those people just don't like this type of game.  That's fine and all, but I have to wonder why they didn't do more reading before-hand to discover that maybe it just wasn't going to be a game for them instead of saying those things need to be changed in order for them to enjoy it.

Also, a large number of complaints are just complete misunderstandings of mechanics/features, or a lack of knowledge altogether that otherwise might change their opinion.

I won't touch this game because you spend all your time as a ship. I don't find ships very interesting...

If it was 50% boring ship crap and 50% land missions or space ship raids and such, I'd play it over lots of games.

Yes, giggal's post is a textbook example of someone who didn't grasp EVE's concepts.  And the 100k/14k comment just speaks even louder of his lack of knowledge about it.  Talking about gate campers like they were such a big deal to him in the few times he -tried- (note, he said tried) the game, when he obviously never did real PvP, and doesn't even seem to understand how the market works with the comments he made about missions and scams.  (that whole paragraph was LOL-worthy)
