This is a very simple question and would like some serious responses from the gaming community at large - but most from non-EVE players.
What is it, or was it, about the game of EVE that keeps you from playing the game?
I've tried EVE thrice. Every time I never made it far. It just was very hard to figure out what was going on and slow to get started. I'm sure if I could have got over that initial hump it wouldn't have been too bad, but I just never could bring my self to do it.
I won't touch this game because you spend all your time as a ship. I don't find ships very interesting... If it was 50% boring ship crap and 50% land missions or space ship raids and such, I'd play it over lots of games.
Lol!!!!!! Hello! There's a reason you're a ship 100% of the time... EVE is a Spaceship mmo! Wow!!! You people have those saftey helmets strapped on tight tonight aye??
No connection to the ship as an avatar and the whole leveling not because of skill or action, but just by paying a sub fee and setting the thing to level a skill. Never heard of any skill cap but imagine that it is impossible to become equal to someone that's been playing for a couple years now. Next are the plentiful issues with corps having "inside" connections, drama, etc etc etc. Finally, at the end of the day there is nothing to really do but go to work in the game and that's not what I play games for.
You mean you 'failed' to control your ship. Not "you couldn't".
That may be true. I was clicking on things and trying to figure out how to move to them...
It wouldn't let me actually control it , with ya know directional keys or whatever.
Not even 15 seconds go by before your very own ships computer explains how movement works lol... I fear for the future of this genre if it's being catered toward people that can't focus for 15 seconds....
I also have to laugh any time someone mentions the corp drama as a reason they disliked the game. It's like... "Why play any PvP MMO if there is no player conflict?" The conflict isn't canned. You don't meet up with random people in a battleground. You know, and sometimes hate, the people you're fighting against. Everyone on the server can know someone's name, and players can build reputation because of this conflict. There's no developer telling you who to fight because of a pre-determined story point.

What is it, or was it, about the game of EVE that keeps you from playing the game?
I tried it for 2 months. I did a lot of different things when i was in game. For me....the PVP, and to be honest at the time i got it i didn't get the feeling that it was that heavy a PVP game.
I was gate camped for a PVE quest, didnt care for getting locked down with the no-hyperdrive stuff (rooted and ganged up on)
I was minding my own business in 1.0 space burning time mining little rocks. at the time i had the noob mining ship and i was mining and putting the extra in a pod. somone came up and looted the pod, when i tried to take it back i was killed by him and his magically out of no where battleship buddy.
One time i went 1 sector over to try and mine something and was killed, again rooted.
I just dont like that other people can effect my gameplay in such a negative way.
I always had insurance, the clone up to date, and was in a corp, but often times 1 death took hours to rebuild/reconfigure the ship you lost travelling around to get the parts.
Combat was OK, i really like more piloting ability
You mean you 'failed' to control your ship. Not "you couldn't".

The corrupt Dev's that controll the game. They get caught cheating, then told they were slapped on the wrist or so the players are told. Yea, right, I belive that... sure... Change of names, and boom, back in business.
I played for few years, even had a toon that had nearly full Leadership skills, then after the 4th Dev caught cheating in the game with their "friends", was about time for me to find another game to play. When the Dev's cheat at their own game... come on.
Love all the responces from EVE players... guess they can't read you wanted Non-EVE people to respond.

Have you read some of these posters reasons for not liking EVE? My head hurts after wading through half this retardation.
People making shit up, hating the game because it isnt tie fighter, wanting the game to be more like this game or that game and crying because they dont have the time to play?
My HONEST review on why i will never....ever....EVEr play EVE.
- My best friend played eve for about 3 weeks (i put months, whoops), he never once asked me to play it, he never once talked about it, he never once said ANYTHING about the game. I just saw him playing the game sometimes and thats it.
I will not play this game because personally. I hate space-mmos, i hate just floating around in a ship, ive seen gameplay... i hate the UI set up and i hate how the game is played. I will never try this game because it does not appeal to me, not at ALL.
I heard its a GREAT game, ive heard a lot of GOOD things about it, but personally, the appeal to play this game (remember, personally) doesnt seem to be good. It looked boring when i watched him play, and thats enough for me. I saw him shoot some layers at another ship, i saw him lose his ship, i saw him shoot a laser at a rock, and i saw him click around in his dock. The... game... looked.... boring. Not my type of game, i perfer mmoRPGs. Something with a playable character, customization, classes, different roles to do ingame. Not flying around in a ship shooting things. Its just not me, it will never be me. And THIS is why i will never....ever....EVE(r), play EVE
I've read a lot of interesting posts and reviews about Eve and was interested in it....but I would never play a game which has no real avatars. Its not my thing to roleplay a ship. If they implement a character system where I can actually leave my ship and meet people in person on starbases or whatever place then I might try it.

You wonder why they are getting a little flamage?
yes most of these reasons are retarded and it becomes very clear that these people have either not played at all and say things like "i dont like to play with excel" only because other people do.
there are only 2 legitimate answers that are not pure BS from people who have either not played for long or not at all
legitimate reason 1, takes to much time commitment ( i understand perfectly well that not everyone can play many hours a day and this game does indeed take alot of time)
legitimate reason 2, i dont like (insert eve game feature). ( i mean if you dont like something, i wont force you to it nor will i hold it against you, there are many thing i dont like... racing games for example or sport video games... if they made a MMO about sports no matter how good it is i wont play it.)
everything else is honestly pure BS.
95% of these post i can quote/reply: "you'r doing it wrong!" or "how about playing for at least 15 minutes..."

This is right, ive never tried the game, i never will, because it doesnt appeal to me AT ALL. Same for other, but they might have tried it for 15 mins, and left because it was just a sucky experience for them.
15 minutes was obviously sarcasm to anyone who plays the game. I don't respect the opinion of anyone who didn't at least complete the tutorial and first mission arc. It took me 5 or 6 trials before it suddenly clicked and I understood the concepts of the game and started thinking outside the box. 15 minutes is not enough time to grasp even the most basic of EVE's concepts. Ship movement and 'clicking orbit and activating your guns' are not valid reasons, because people are comparing these features with games they're familiar with. When really, EVE is NOTHING like any other MMO on the market, and can't be treated as such. Expecting WASD movement and manual aiming is ridiculous, because the game doesn't boast traditional features as its selling points. People aren't taking the game for what it is, and are instead basing their opinions on it from experiences with OTHER games.
Edit: Also, the new player experience is a far different one than it was years ago. It is also MUCH different than the experience of playing the game long-term. Combat is NOT as simple as 'click orbit and activate your guns', and any player with experience in PvP would laugh at you as they killed you if that's all you did. Many of the complaints in this game are, as stated earlier, MISCONCEPTIONS. People who have not truly experienced the features are complaining about the fact that they didn't want to take the time to LEARN how to play. It isn't a game you can just pick up and suddenly understand. People play for years and still learn new things from other players every day.

Ok , I'll just be blunt about it. i thought it was very boring. The combat sucked. The click to move and then revolve around an object, and lack of freedom to move was not my kind of game.
Regardless of how much time I would have invested into this game , I played a total of an hour and realized that I would be bored out of my mind. This is just my opinion. Hope that is good enough for ya.

This is true. I last tried EVE early last year and made it for a couple of months before losing interest. The new player experience was good, but still vague in certain areas. I never made it out of low-sec, and from what I've read the best parts of the game are in null-sec and w-space.
I started up another trial account a couple of days ago and am doing the tutorial again, and it's much better than last time. I'm learning tons more about the game than I did last time. I'm going through the different "career" agents and am actually enjoying it. Especially exploration, salvaging and so on.
