So what constitutes a non-wow clone? We have a consensus on eve, any others? If pre-nge SWG released today, just another wow clone with a twist on skills and crafting, which no-one wants, nerf the degredation. What constitutes a 'new' mmo, so stupid, what a pointless artical.
Got a map? WoW clone. Got a skillbar? WoW clone. Got a 3D world? WoW clone. See the pattern?
Most people will only compare something to what they already know. Unfortunately, all most MMO players know now is World of Warcraft and it makes for a sad statement. I know a few people that play World of Warcraft and when they are introduced to another game they always bring up the WoW clone bit. When asked what makes it a WoW clone they almost always say “Well, it plays just like WoW.” The answer is always just as hollow as their accusations.
All FPS games play like every other FPS game out there but we don’t hear “It’s a (insert name here) clone!” It really does get old after a while and what makes it even worse is most if not all posting in this topic have never played the game in question just basing it off how the game looks.

Non-wow clone= A game without RNG-based combat, without every projectile acting like a homing missile, with active dodging and blocking. Crafting that doesn't require you to grind or requires you to purchase a new "rank" from a crafting trainer. A game without trinity-based combat, and without the dominance of gear over skill. A game without talent trees, and without the infinite skillbars. And finally a game that doesn't primarily have kill-x and collect-y quests.
So your saying many of the singleplayer RPGs, MMORPGs and MUDs before WoW wre in fact WoW clones.Damn Blizzard and their manipulation fo TIme and Space!!!!

Certain things make a game an MMO. Blizzard is not solely responsible for defining the MMO genre.....Bottom line.
"Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is the touchstone on which BioWare measures its forthcoming Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic.
Speaking on the keynote panel today at the DICE Summit in Vegas, BioWare’s Greg Zeschuk said that the company is following the rules established by Blizzard’s subscription fantasy MMO.
“It is a touchstone. It has established standards, it’s established how you play an MMO. Every MMO that comes out, I play and look at it. And if they break any of the WoW rules, in my book that’s pretty dumb,” Zeschuk told the audience.""
::groan:: Really? He thinks it is dumb if any game deviates from the WoW model? Oh man I have just lost all hope for SWTOR. He is basically saying it's going to be a WoW clone with a Star Wars skin.

WoW's rules:
There must be fun combat.
There must be a good crafting system.
There must be raiding. (Or something similair where you can team up to achieve things as a group. Usually bigger than solo achievements.)
There must be PvP.
There must be more than one faction/team/side.
There must be replayability.
There must be a large world.
There must be things you can earn, progress on. (Primarily gear. No it doesn't come under raids because you can get gear from anything. PvP, Raids, Crafting, Quests.)
The game must be engaging.

I think people are trying to say that they believe this game will be substantively like WoW in its design. With perhaps a few sprinkles added on top.
And owing to what I just read above. And having just recently read from Gamespot - something of an industry whoresite - that the game played like "WoW with lightsabers", I think maybe it's you who should do some reading.

I'm really sick of this stupidn "every FPS is just a clone of other FPS's so there is nothing wrong with every MMO being a clone of WoW" argument. It just doesn't work.
An FPS is defined by its combat. There is only ONE 1 requirement for a game to be termed and FPS and that is first person shooting.
F-first
P-person
S-shooter
An MMO is NOT defined by its combat like an FPS is. Nor is it defined by anything other than being an online world where massive amounts of people can play together.
M-massively
M-multiplayer
O-online
Nowhere in the acronym MMO does it say "tab targeting" or "non-tab targeting" or "lots of skillbars".
You cannot keep using that stupid argument because there are too many differences in what defines and MMO and what defines an FPS.
All i ever hear being mentioned about this game is the story the story the story, every game has a story now what about the other features of this "mmorpg". I'm not going to buy a game just because it has voice overs.

I can tell you that in 4 hours of game time you will spend 15 minutes in dialogue. Is that much?

I'm pretty sure most people don't play games to read quest text OR watch cutscenes. Games are for playing, not watching nor reading. You might like that but I'm sure plenty of other people would rather just play the game.

I can tell you that in 4 hours of game time you will spend 15 minutes in dialogue. Is that much?
I think people are trying to say that they believe this game will be substantively like WoW in its design. With perhaps a few sprinkles added on top.
And owing to what I just read above. And having just recently read from Gamespot - something of an industry whoresite - that the game played like "WoW with lightsabers", I think maybe it's you who should do some reading.
But we will see...
No, you are the one who should be reading more.
WoW doesn't have FULL VOICE OVER for every character in the game, with CINEMATIC CUTS as a quest system.
WoW doesn't have COMPANION CHARACTERS.
WoW doesn't have ships that work like HOUSING.
WoW doesn't have PHYSICS and REAL-TIME MELEE combat, or even a COVER SYSTEM.
WoW doesn't have CHOICES IN QUESTS, CHOICES that CHANGE the game.
WoW doesn't have a MORALITY SYSTEM that changes the way you progress your character.
WoW crafting system is a JOKE compared to the one SWTOR will have.
WoW doesn't have personal stories.
The only thing this game shares with WoW:
HOTBAR - STANDARD MMO
PHASING - STANDARD MMO
ON RAILS TRAVEL SYSTEM
Is this the 3 things that are going to make this game be a clone?! please don't make me laugh.
You want to know what a true WoW-clone is? go play RIFT.
Sorry dude but RIFT is so not much of a WoW clone at all....id say closer to EQ 2
I like it. I am lazy and would much rather have someone read me the quest than have to read the small text myself.

You wouldn't understand
I was talking about Knights of the Old Republic
Whatever you say, for me it's a mix of WoW with Warhammer. But they failed in combat, quests and dynamic events, of course this is just my opinion.
BUT EQ 2 WAS A WOW CLONE!!! :O
leik omfg rift is SOOOOO a wow clone, even though idk wtf a wow clone izzz!
Wow is so awesome and rifts will leik have a health bar so its probably just leik wow
QQ cool stori bro ... i luv wow
If your really that lazy then I suggest you should watch a movie. Really, they're amazing, no quest text, you don't even have to control the characters. /End sarcasm.
I'm pretty sure most people don't play games to read quest text OR watch cutscenes. Games are for playing, not watching nor reading. You might like that but I'm sure plenty of other people would rather just play the game.
