Every game that is released borrows from previous work that is done. Guess what, this happens in every discipline. Its called progress.
There's a difference between blatantly ripping off someone's ideas, or taking the best parts of it and trying to improve on it. In the end, what sets a game apart from the rest is style, attention to detail and general 'polish'. It seems to me that The Old Republic has plenty of that.
Look folks....You either get wow clone,or an indie suck fest that a minority of players enjoy these days. If you can't handle one or the other, make your own MMO, or find something else to play that isn't an MMO. Stop expecting the world. I'm actaully starting to think most of these complainers don't even know what they want these days.
One of the most ridiculous statements I've ever read.
WoW Clone does not equal success; WoW already does the WoW style of gaming very well, to the point where nobody is going to be able to beat them at it. Trying to make WoW clone after WoW clone is just doomed to failure, as there's no way something like WoW is going to out-perform WoW.
A lot of the 'indie suck fests' have been such because they've been unfocused messes, or tried to do too much with not enough resources. There are massive success-stories out there which don't follow the WoW model, but the investors in games see "ZOMG WOW MAKE MUCH MONEY WE MUST DO WHAT THEY DO TO MAKE MUCH MONEY" while being unwilling to take a risk on something different.
As it is, the MMO genre in general is strangling itself.
1)Brown Nosing - LOL the guy was not 'brown-nosing' Blizzard! He was brown nosing the WOW players, hoping some would come over and try his game. Not brown nosing but standard business practice with competitors.
2)Dumb - The guy never said 'dumb'. Try substituting the word 'Obvious". Check up on the business profitability and continuing membership of Blizzard and WOW.
3)New Standard & Bar Higher - Just a well worn cliche. Saw nothing in your post about what a "new" standard and "bar" might be. Just the cliche. My return suggestion for you is a new 'standard' of constructive criticism and observation. For raising the 'bar', try not to insult the people for whom you write these posts. Couldn't hurt.
4)Opiate for the Masses - Suggestive. As I am one of the "masses" I do not care for being looked down on as some sort of low intelligence type of moron. Such an accusation indicates you might have an inherent ego problem as I do not believe your 'ELITE' status on this website indicates more than you just type a lot.
5)Lowest Common Denominator - Do you actually have contempt for anyone whose likes or dislikes are not the same as yours? Why the double shot at people you do not know.
6)Caviar fish eggs - As a member of the lowest common denominator I thought you might want to know that caviar is fish eggs. Most of we 'masses' call it fish eggs, we can not afford caviar. That is for the ELITE I guess.
In conclusion - There is another cliche "opinions are like a*holes, everybody has one". It honestly seems like you have more than one. BTW if this reply to your post makes you feel insulted, then I honestly apologize. It is just that reading so many posts from people who actually seem to hate WOW and quickly insult personally anyone who likes WOW that I wrote this on impulse. A return shot from you will be understandable. Have a good day regardless.

I came to that conclusion a LONG time ago. There are already games out there like Darkfall and EVE for people who don't like themepark MMOs. If those don't satisfy them then there's nothing that can. They say they want something different yet when a game like TOR talks about full voiceovers and choices that affect your gameplay,(which NO MMO has by the way) they say they don't care about story. You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. That's why it is best for MMO companies to stick with their vision of the game instead of cowtowing to the complainers.

Totally agreed. I like some of the indie suckfests (I'm a fan and whilom subscriber to EVE and Fallen Earth, I even think Darkfall's a pretty good game and getting more polished as time goes on); but I also I think WoW is a great game that fully deserves its success (I don't play it because ultimately the lore and art design aren't my cup of tea, but I played it enough to know that it's an extraordinarily well-made and satisfying game of its kind), and I really don't mind that kind of game. It's a big world and there's plenty of room for all sorts of games.
This elitist either/or attitude here at mmorpg.com is simply daft.
And I'll tell you what TOR will be: it will be like playing KOTOR with other people, with some reasonably well-made standard MMO stuff tacked on. Trust me on this.
And I'll tell you something else: that's exactly what most gamers will expect and want. If anyone ever expected anything else, they must have had their head stuck up their ass.
And yes, I think Raph Koster is a genius game designer, and I wish the original SWG had had a chance to progress along its original lines. It was without doubt a classic sandbox game. But TOR is not going to be anything like a sandbox, nor should it be. It's going to be its own beast, an iteration on the MMO genre that we've never quite seen before (except, to a limited extent, in Tortage in AoC, and in some of the Epic quests in LOTRO): a story-driven game, in a multiplayer context.
It's going to be typical BioWare fare, what everyone expects from BioWare: pretty decent stories, well voice-acted, with even a few genuinely ponderable moral dilemmas here and there, and a few consequential choices - and some engaging but slightly iffy combat.

Originally posted by MMO.Maverick I saw the same article quoted here, albeit in that link it had more of what had been said.
From a game development perspective makes sense to me. I mean, they managed to pull the MMO genre from geeky niche nerdom into the mainstream and pop culture awareness all by themselves, and they have 10 to 100 times as many subs as their direct competitors, so the Blizzard guys must be doing something right.
It would be foolish not to pay heed what mechanics and design approaches Blizzard used for WoW to achieve that kind of success; which doesn't mean that the BW guys'll be copying everything 1 on 1, but paying attention to the lessons that can be discerned from WoW is certainly not a bad thing.
As far as I am concerned the MMO genre would have been 100 times better off remaining a "geeky niche nerdom". The so called "mainstreaming of the MMO genre ruined it.
As for SW:TOR being a WoW clone, I think I remember calling that one several months ago.... but then MOST of the "Cool Kids" will love it, so Bioware is going to rake in the profits.
The Bioware Exec being honest... well that just proves they don't think they need to lie about what they have done to the genre anymore. They, the modern Developers and Publishers, don't have a clue how a real MMO is supposed to be designed and managed, nor do they have a clue what a MMO is really for... who it is supposed to exist for... so I am not surprised at their public show of ignorance.
Bah, why do I bother anymore. This news is a deathblow for Players like me whether we know it or not, it proves the past is the past and MMOs will never again be what they once were.

I think we could easily end the thread in a peaceful way, if we knew what the definition of the word "touchstone" is in that context.
touchstone [?t?t??st??n]
n
1. a criterion or standard by which judgment is made
2. (Earth Sciences / Minerals) a hard dark siliceous stone, such as basalt or jasper, that is used to test the quality of gold and silver from the colour of the streak they produce on it
Yes, standard quality. WoW is the best MMO of the market even if some people hate it.
Using that logic McDonald's is the best fast food burger joint on the market, even if I think Steak and Shake is much better.

Look I have no idea if you've actually participated in the SWTOR beta, or not. But I know if you "pre-ordered" it from anywhere it must have been a store where they're more than willing to take your money. Despite the fact that there's no release date. And when I think about it for more than a few seconds, I realise that even if you've played the game some place. You are still violating your NDA.
No, screw it, I just don't believe you! Link a screenshot, or it didn't happen...

Actually he wouldn't be breaking the NDA by saying hes in beta. Thats about all you can say but it is allowed. Now the screenshot would be breaking the NDA.

I signed an NDA for a Beta that did not prohibit me from saying I was in beta.... however it did prohibit me from discussing what was in the NDA, or even acknowledging the fact that an NDA existed.

This is why i say he allowed to say hes in the beta or as they call it game testing.
We have seen many questions about the Game Testing Agreement and we want to clarify a few things.
Per the Game Testing Agreement, a user can state there is a Game Testing Program.
Per the Game Testing Agreement, when someone is selected for testing, they can disclose the fact that they are a member of the Game Testing Program.
That is the extent of it and anything else would be a violation of the Game Testing Agreement. Users that are found to post or even repost confidential materials (such as invitations, Game Tester Portal, etc) will be permanently removed from the Game Testing Program and subject to discipline up to and including permanent removal from the service. This is not limited to screenshots of the game but taking "screen grabs" or sharing of confidential documentation and materials.
If you have any questions pertaining to this, ask them here.
Why does people even bother with these topics before closed / open beta? Nobody cares what someone THINKS this game will be like untill anything solid closer to release is relevealed in lengths.
These same thread starters will be there gasping "omg so cool I just pre ordered my collector's edition for the umpteenth time after cancelling it umpteenth times first, based on some off-shoot comment 1,5 years ago, on some random gaming site!" lollipop!
Impatience of kids is alarming these days. Shrieking should be forbidden by law before closed/open betas, when it comes to mmos.
I've participated in quite a few Closed Betas in the last 11 years. All of the NDAs included a clause that said something to the effect of "don't discuss this beta with anyone that is not participating". Now, yes, I do understand that BioWare might have chosen to do things differently. But you never even hear about any SWTOR beta beyond some random comment like this one.
That fact, combined with his statement about "pre-ordering" SWTOR leads me to believe he is just lying. And the best way to call him on it, without flaming him, is to challenge him for a screenshot. If he produces I'll apologize and STFU. Otherwise I'd prefer for him to keep his comments, which he cannot validate, to himself.
"Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is the touchstone on which BioWare measures its forthcoming Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic.
Speaking on the keynote panel today at the DICE Summit in Vegas, BioWare’s Greg Zeschuk said that the company is following the rules established by Blizzard’s subscription fantasy MMO.
“It is a touchstone. It has established standards, it’s established how you play an MMO. Every MMO that comes out, I play and look at it. And if they break any of the WoW rules, in my book that’s pretty dumb,” Zeschuk told the audience.""
::groan:: Really? He thinks it is dumb if any game deviates from the WoW model? Oh man I have just lost all hope for SWTOR. He is basically saying it's going to be a WoW clone with a Star Wars skin.
Well this WoW clone has the largest following of any upcoming MMO. With over 248k Facebook followers and almost a million accounts on the offical website. Compared to GW2 that has about 157k.
But yeah people just hate WoW type games, thats why they are all playing WoW.
That may be so but GW has already sold 6 million units including expasions so i don't really think swtor is even close to that.
GW2 will sell even more just like swtor will sell a shed load.
At this piont, with any new games, my expectation has been reduced just so I can go back to enjoying them again. All I hope for now is another game that is fun to play that has a large community.
@Cannyone: ? The yellow text seemed pretty clear, saying you're in a beta is no violation of the NDA while producing screenshots would certainly be a violation of the NDA.

I understand. And I still suspect that he's not telling the truth. But I made my original comments before that repost from the SWTOR forums was added.
And my post (previous to this one) was just to make a point. In all the times I was participating in a "limited beta" I never went on some forum and said; I'm in the "____" beta, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah... That's just "bad form" in my opinion. And if he lets me bait him into violating the NDA, I won't turn him in for it. But I won't feel bad if he gets kicked either.
Yeah, sometimes I can be pretty pathetic... Life is just that way.
Now I truly will shut up! In fact I'll log, push away from the computer and go get something useful done. I apologize to everyone, including nmalthus, for being a jerk. Have a great day!
Are we suprised? Im not, the developers of MMOS think that WoW is the Holy grail, they bend themself backwards to copy cat that game, and then they TANK ( WAR, AOC, Champions online, Star Trek the list goes ever on) and are suprised hmm we get 700k box sails and our game drops to below 100k in one month hmm How can this bee? what did we do wrong?
YOU COPIED A GAME THAT EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER HAS PLAYED!!!!!!!!!!
Ps: for all those that say WoW copied other games.. Im talking about the MINDSET here the Thredwheel, the item grind, the Quest till you drop etc... Mini/Max I want BOP stuff, Instanced Battlegrounds, instanced dungeones... Blizzard whent all out here they have created a MONSTER that has derailed the hole genre now for a half a decade...

Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Oh it will be something new..That's all I'm going to say.
