I know every time a highly anticipated MMO is about to release people go crazy with excitement but when was the last time this much information in form of videos was avilable for people to see? Anet is not keeping anythign behind closed doors and information about game is freely avilable for people to see. I spent last two weeks watching videos of GW2, seeing is beleving and that is exactly what i did. I must have seen hundreds of videos and cant think of one MMO which lets players get so much informaiton about game mechanics and features before release.
yes people will tell me to 'simmer down' and not get too hyped but what if i say 'maybe hype is for real this time'?
It's possible for you, it will be real. For someone else, maybe not so much. Who's to say? I think the game will live up to the hype for some, perhaps even surpass it and for others it won't or will for a limited time only. And really there's nothing wrong with that. I don't think it is possible for a game to be all things to all people. Seriously I hope it does well. I think the genre as a whole needs a boost of confidence.

The second they announced that they would be powering the game on microtransactions I knew the hype was not real.
Here is what I've been seeing people complain about:
Zones exist (some of my favourite games consist of zones)
No gear progression at endgame (its a choice they made, we'll see how that works out)
Not enough skills (an elementalist has over 100 skills available)
Too difficult (others are complaining the dynamic world gameplay is too easy)
No dedicated healer (its a choice they made, we'll see how that works out)
No tanks (its a choice they made, we'll see how that works out)
WvW is a zergfest (really? how would they know, i played DAoC extensively and sometimes it was Zerg, sometimes it was not, GW2 will certainly take that same direction)
Graphics need to be better (the game allready won several prices for most artisitc ingame graphics, graphics is more then raw polygon and pixel counts )
While you are grouped in Dynamic events, you generally never need to speak to anyone (true, but there is no reason not to speak to anyone)
Cash Shop (its a choice they made, we'll see how that works out)
Fast Travel (i think the way they implemented it its just perfect for my gamingneeds
Those are jsut some of the things I've seen floating around the last couple of days. Most of which I don't personally see as issues, but there are of course differing opinions.
Something tells me all those people complaining don't understand what arenanet is trying to do with this game.. They got no clue about how these changes will affect their game.

Well, there is always hype. And most of the people are really hyped. Over-hyped, if you can say that.
SWTOR - overhyped.
Aion - overhyped.
Hell, even Skyrim was overhyped and and first was treated quite badly, but then got the respect it deserves.
GW2 is, probably, overhyped to at some point. The only thing that you should do is think about it yourself. I know that I hyped this game in my mind and I accept it, I also accept that it could totally flop and I might regret spending money. But you are right at some point. Seeing is believing. If you see something good, and it's good enough for you - why not. Relying on pure peoples opinion, on the other hand, is kinda tricky and mostly leads to bad things. Not saying that you shouldn't listen to people, but you always should have your own opinion.) For me, I knew that Aion will not be a WoW killer as they proclaimed it. Also, I liked Skyrim from the very first moment. But ofc I overhyped SWTOR for myself, and that's where I failed

That was over four years ago, but you're still here.
It remains to be seen how that will work out. In any other game, Selling items that are tradeable in game automatically defaults the whole ingame economy to a cash shop driven economy. In my book that is autofail.
However, in this game, It seems the overall importance of the economy itself is reduced when compared to previous MMOs so the whole thing remains to be seen.
It's not one of GWII's better features, I'll say that much.
I've never understood this arguement.. I was curious so..
I just went on the wiki and counted 72 skills for Ranger ( ones that have an after skill, like signets or spirits were only counted once).
Then I went on the WoW wiki and counted 52 skills for the Hunter (including minimap tracking skills and the autoattack, which shouldn't really count imo.. also note that this is after years and years of development).
I don't hear people saying that WoW doesn't have enough skills.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Its strange because I love the fact that I will be geting content for free while some shlub spends his paycheck on keeping the content coming for me. All the while the guy gets only cosmetic or xp bonuses in a game where XP and leveling matters far less than in other games. People are likely going to go back to old content to pick up skill points anyway which would defeat the purpose of outleveling the content.
Anyway, obviously there are differnt opinions about it.
No game is ever as good as peoples' over-inflated and unrealistic expectations make it out to be... and they are always disappointed as a result. The key to actually enjoying games is to research it objectively and understand how the game will play. Don't let excitement cloud your judgement. It never does anyone a service to believe that a game will be the best thing ever. That kind of thinking ALWAYS leads to disappointment because nothing can ever match the ideal game we create in our minds. And nothing will ever match our first MMO love... this is just a fact.
People around here too often set themselves up to be diappointed and I do fear that this is what is happening with this game as well...
I think people generally expect too much out of MMO's and it seems GW2 is getting hyped up through the roof.
I full expect it to be an awsome MMO with fun PvP that appeals to a lot of players because of it's ease of access and no subscription model, but in the end it will still be a MMO and suffer from many MMO problems that have plagued the genre for years.
The claims of a lack of tanks and healers in this game always makes me chuckle.
Due to the fact that there aren't any tanks or dedicated healers I find myself puzzled as to where the chuckle finds it's origination...
Oh I see, just because they claim that there's no tanks or healers, people automatically assume that all of those tanking and group healing specific abilities are unimportant. Gotcha.
The hype is definitely real. A lot of people believe this will save the genre. Which is sad, but nonetheless real.
I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

Believe it or not, this is the thing that concerns me more than anything.
Why is ArenaNet selling items for real money that have at best questionable value at worse, are pointless?
Thanks puzzles are always a plus. I was referring to actual interaction with objects and people in the game outside of quest givers.
Like sitting in the tavern drinking ale waiting for your party to get together. Saying Hi to random NPCs that have a response if they are not a quest giver. Stuff like we have seen on other MMOs even WOW.
The hype is just an indication of people being interested in the game... What everyone expects from the game to actually be is a completley different and personal thing. The game will exceed expectations for some or it will be a total dissapointment (those are the best and the worst cases).
No game can satisfy everyone and not everyone likes the same things in mmorpgs so the hype will be real for some and for seome - not...

If you take a little time to look at the skills and traits for every class then you'll see that 'every' class has access to those types of skills in one way or another. The proof that there are no 'dedicated' tanks or healers is directly in front of you. You also need to realise that the claim does not mean noone will need to absorb damage to live or to heal at some point. It just means that there will not be one single person who does only that all the time.

LOL. The answer to your riddle is very simple. The game mechanics are being tweaked to make them very valuable.
1) Why buy gems? Well, to buy gold to buy influence which provides RvRvR boosts. Very clear pay2win.
2) Why buy repair bot? Well, despite early claims by Anet that repairing is a false mechanic they have indeed put in the repair gold sink that makes buying repair bots worth it
3) Why buy EXP boosters? Well, until recently people claimed you could just sidekick up so they were meaningless. Lo and behold, sidekicking up is no longer a feature. Cash shop wins again!
The only unprecedented thing Anet is doing is charging you $60 for a game that they admit was "Built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind" Most games today designed this way are F2P.
GW2 "built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind" 1) Cash->Gems->Gold->Influence->WvWvWBoosts = PAY2WIN 2) Mystic Chests = Crass in-game cash shop advertisements

I see GWII providing the genre with huge stepping stones in a good direction. But I don't see it as the game that will be the one to actually carry the genre over to that place.

I have two concerns with the game.
Limited instance WvWvW worries me.
How interactive is the actual game world.?
